Friday Afternoon Music: Reign of Kindo, ‘This Is What Happens’

The unique rock/jazz band Reign of Kindo has a new album out, and it’s freaking excellent. You should buy it because you will like it. You will like it. You should buy it. Like. Buy. Hope. Change. (I’m trying out that neurolinguistic programming stuff from the previous post.)

All kidding aside, the new album really is great: This Is What Happens. Here’s a performance of the title track, slightly reminiscent of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer’s prog-rock classic Tarkus.

Loving this so far, sounds very much like the direction music was heading during that Gentle Giant/Genesis/ELP era... good stuff and I wish more musicians were as skilled as these guys before they stepped foot into studios.

I don't remember anything my grandmothers bought me. (Except for the fabric, because I made it into a dress I wore for years, but that's another story.)

I remember them, and how they love(d) me, vividly.

My one remaining grandmother is 85. I sat and talked to her recently, with a little voice in my head reminding me to do this now, and how much I wish I could talk to the other one.

I'm glad they like the toys. I'll bet they like you more.

Cleaning. Interesting idea. I'm working on the church bulletin. I can't really leave the house today because my oldest son is with a boy scout trroop in Atlanta, Georgia. They were stuck there overnight after thunderstorms delayed a flight. Tonight's flight is delayed, too, but if they can just get off the ground it's a nonstop flight back home.

So I can't miss any phone calls.

Just made a pietersite and chrysoprase (lower grade-c-nice brown inclusions) bracelet for my sister, because I owe her a thank you. It was a fun half-hour, but I can't get the cord to sit right with the clasp.

Here is a nice article and SEVEN pictures of various clasps and how they are "tied" off.

Tigertail. The problem is the clasp is a two-hole box clasp, but the pietersite won't admit two cords. I'm thinking of switching to silk. It would break, eventually, but it has a nicer drape.

Obviously, I know the individual well. The chrysoprase is an inside joke, because we are both Terry Pratchett fans. Yeah, the pietersite hole won't fit two tigertail cords. I think I will try silk.

snappy tune in the Key of G.. I like the little riff that goes from G- F#m and some Crazy little Cm aug chord..The drummer is awesome.. The lead stayed strictly in a G scale..Jon Scofield would have torn that shit up...Great Bass player..I forgot to count out the beat..What was that a 5/8 or 7/8?

Stepped outside to harvest some blueberries. You really should try growing some up there--blueberries like alpine climates, and they're very low maintenance.

The chrysoprase is the focal. The pietersite goes nicely with the inclusions.

Chrysroprase the troll is character in Terry Pratchett's discworld. He is, essentially, the head of the troll mafia. (Trolls in discworld are "classed" by what kind of stone they are. The Watchman Detritus would be a lower class than Chrysoprase. The king of the trolls is Diamond, obviously.

Blueberries... we live on the side of a hill, two acres, lots of vole holes, not very easy to plant a patch of anything and bears have enough attraction to our garbage, I wouldn't want them coming over the fence getting onto the property any more than they do.

Can you use a reaming tool to increase the size of the hole in the chrysoprase? If you were here, I'd drill it out for you myself.

I do have a diamond tip file, and I could try to widen the pietersite. The chrysoprase would easily take two tigertail cords.

(There was this time that the doorknob to the garage broke, trapping all of our tools inside, except for the beading tools. Did you know that you cannot saw your way through a case-hardened latch-thingy with a diamond tip file, although you can make some headway. Eventually we went down and borrowed tools from a neighbor.)

Not since he's been with the Pats

The coaches won't get on him if he does,,, the PLAYERS will,, and he knows it

good for them...I exaggerate a bit, but he really doesn't like to play downfield...we've all seen the tapes I suppose...he's great otherwise, and he can take a hit

Fareed Zakaria returned his ADL Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize and $10,000 honorarium in protest of the ADL's response to the Park51 Community Center & Mosque project:

CNN host and Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria has returned an award from the Anti-Defamation League in protest of the ADL’s coming out against the mosque at Ground Zero.

Zakaria explained his decision in his column today:

Bloomberg’s speech stands in stark contrast to the bizarre decision of the Anti-Defamation League to publicly side with those urging that the center be moved. The ADL’s mission statement says it seeks “to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens.” But Abraham Foxman, the head of the ADL, explained that we must all respect the feelings of the 9/11 families, even if they are prejudiced feelings. “Their anguish entitles them to positions that others would categorize as irrational or bigoted,” he said. First, the 9/11 families have mixed views on this mosque. There were, after all, dozens of Muslims killed at the World Trade Center. Do their feelings count? But more important, does Foxman believe that bigotry is OK if people think they’re victims? Does the anguish of Palestinians, then, entitle them to be anti-Semitic?

Five years ago, the ADL honored me with its Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize. I was thrilled to get the award from an organization that I had long admired. But I cannot in good conscience keep it anymore. I have returned both the handsome plaque and the $10,000 honorarium that came with it. I urge the ADL to reverse its decision. Admitting an error is a small price to pay to regain a reputation.

...
In response to Fareed Zakaria returning an award that was presented to him in 2005, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said it was "saddened, stunned and somewhat speechless" by his decision.
...
"I am not only saddened but stunned and somewhat speechless by your decision to return the ADL Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize you accepted in 2005," Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, wrote in a letter responding to Mr. Zakaria.

"As someone I greatly respect for engaging in discussion and dialogue with an open mind, I would have expected you to reach out to me before coming to judgment," Mr. Foxman added.

Mr. Foxman said he hoped that Mr. Zakaria "will come to see that ADL acted appropriately" and would reclaim the award bestowed upon him.
