This is one of the best Crowded House albums in years. Really digging it. The iTunes version comes with 11 videos and a very cool digital booklet.

Here's an iTunes store link with the LGF affiliate ID embedded:

Injury Update:

Right Wrist still in sling and splint, and will be until I see the Orthopedic doctor again on August 13. I'm thinking he'll leave it on longer than that, but that's no problem. It is broken but non-dislocated, so the splint, the sling, and some time *should* fix it. Surgery does not appeal to me!

Left hand much better, still a little bruising.

Bruises on both knees almost gone and they feel much better!

Stitches out of lip, no bleeding, and no pain!

Still got a lot of deep bruising on my chest. Time will fix that.

Saturday night, a fine music post, almost like a lounge night. I am resting in, just finished steak and caramelized onions. Cocktail next.
Re fueling after a major hike. At least for me. About 2 1/2 miles but 2000 foot climb. Starting at 6000 feet. Now that will get your heart pumping.

And people wonder why there are only three black teabaggers, maybe four Hispanics.

For pundits who claim to be colorblind, Beck and the Fat Man sure do spend a lot of time talking about race. Usually in the form of, "Help! Help! Black people are oppressing me and other whites!" It plays well with a segment of the public that is (slowly) dying out.

How long did it take Obama to even make a phone call to a BP exec?

92 freetoken  Sat, Aug 7, 2010 7:27:37pm

Has this been brought here yet?

Is There A Coup In The Maine Tea Party?

Something weird is happening with the tea party in Maine. In the past few days, tea party websites in the Pine Tree State have offered glimpses of what some are calling a coup at the one of the state's largest tea party groups, The Maine Patriots.

On Tuesday night, Amy Hale -- one of the leaders of the Patriots group -- posted an odd message to the group's website, suggesting that she'd been forced to give up control of the site, according to media reports (the post has since been removed):

I was cornered in the parking lot by 10+ people and told that bad things would happen to me if I did not give them the password and hand over Maine Patriots. Therefore, I no longer have control of Maine Patriots. Amy

Recommend reading the whole story. (Normally I don't like depending upon TPM, not because I have anything against them, but because they usually aren't the original source. Yet they seem to have taken the lead here stringing together a couple of reports.)

Is the Populism of the Tea Parties turning into the thuggery that is not uncommon in such movements?

You might was well just write a script that criticizes Obama on everything, man. It's not like anything else is expected of you.

I think Obama is failing to lead on renewable energy right now-- we need a lot more, a lot faster. We need more public education about the dangers we're facing, both in terms of national security and economic, from climate change and other environmental disasters we're brewing through not having renewable energy. He needs to step up to that.

First, I think we established that they weren't $1800.

Secondly, no. It's no business of mine what kind of shoes the FLOTUS is wearing, and believe me, Michelle's closet, and Laura's, and Hillary's, and Barbara's, and Nancy's were all filled with multiple pairs of $500 shoes from good designers.

Last thing I could give a damn about. A pair of sneakers?

The Obamas are so uppity. Who do they think they are? Living in a big fancy house with servants...and during a recession! And wearing shoes other than Crocs. Sending their kids to fancy private schools, flying around in fancy aeroplanes, and worst of all, using fancy electricity! How dare they? What kind of example is that for American consumers?

Everyone knows FDR lived in a cardboard Hooverville hut that he and Eleanor built themselves. And he never took a vacation; all that talk about Warm Springs was lie.

If I learned anything from watching the Gulf Disaster unfold it was that no BP exec knew anything worth Obama wasting a phone call to find out...

An hour after that disaster, BP knew exactly what had happened and why.

The day BEFORE the disaster, Schlumberger chartered a helicopter to get its people OFF THE RIG, instead of waiting until the next day when the folks were scheduled to be sent home on BP's dime.

BP, of course, continues to try to put the blame in the failed BOP, when their actions probably contributed to that failure.

BTW, there are two major disasters in progress around the world this past week and continuing on during this week, in Russia and Pakistan. They haven't gotten much play here (or even in US media), but they are affecting millions of people.

E.g.:

Fury Grows over Moscow's Failures and Mounting Deaths

and

The Great Russian Heat Wave of July 2010

for example, for Russia.

In Pakistan millions are displaced by floods that are ongoing.

Just a reminder that arguing over the price of tennis shoes probably only matters to a select few.

Not saying he was/is great, just saying he stepped up when it was needed.

Did you notice that I used the plural "we". That was not the Imperial "We", either.

One thing to remember about a public blog is just that - you are writing for many sets of eyes. You may think are are interacting with a particular individual, but in reality you aren't. Thus the onus is on the writer to try and communicate what they mean.

You may or may not choose to self-identify with a comment which is not directed to you, that is your choice.
Enjoy.

He was also the mayor of a city that had suffered a major terrorist attack. It was a fairly clear-cut situation, both in terms of his duties and his loyalties.

Not to say he didn't do well, just that it's not really a comparable situation.

I just find it amazing that people can say with a straight face that the whole thing was not a set-up.

It just sort of happened to happen, and then, oh no, he LIED, and we had to to something then...

It was a political set-piece that was hatched when Whitewater didn't work.

They've been after him since he was governor. In Hillary's book, btw, the only affair she believed happened was Lewinsky. I don't know, of course, but I don't believe all the claims of a roll in the presidential hay are valid.

Okay.

My general response would be that while Rudy was the mayor of one city which had just suffered one terrorist attack, Obama is the president of all of the US in the midst of an economic down turn and two wars among other stuff.....

So yeah, Obama probably had ALOT more on his plate than Rudy did.

You know, that is a great post. For all politicians go on and on about how Clinton gave Bush a recession, or Bush gave Obama a recession, that is the absolute wrong message. When the cleverness, integrity, and innovation of the American businesspeople is high, our economy does well. When the collective businesses are douchebags, the economy does poorly. I really don't want to hear people talking shit about any president for the economy. On the other hand, when Bush and Obama sign bills that rack up debt for the country that would send a private citizen into the streets in nothing-flat, THAT pisses me off.

I don't know if I'd go that far! He shouldn't be having affairs.

I'll tell you one thing I know for certain. Obama will never, ever have an affair while in office.

I do think ignoring the president's sex life is probably a good thing, but that ain't gonna happen in this day and age. They just have to keep it in their pants.

You know what pisses me off?

When presidents sit back and do nothing rather than spend money because they're more concerned about the deficit than the unemployment rate.

re: #324 SanFranciscoZionist

It also set a terrible precedent. So many Democrats just wished they could impeach Bush, the concept kept coming up, and now you see people using the same language about Obama. The idea got put in people's heads, if you don't like the president, you can force him out. So far so good for trying it again, but HELL. Not a good notion to have flying around.

I don't know about the legalities but one thing is true. It was actually Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi that rightly prevented any attempt at impeaching Bush from going forward.

331 ghazidor  Sat, Aug 7, 2010 9:01:37pm

So the Hospice people that I only met the day before yesterday have decided that I need to take a vacation, duhh, I could have told them that myself.

The "social worker" and some kind of nurse with about twelve letters attached to her name came over yesterday just a day after my Mom enrolled with the Hospice program. They talked to Mom, talked to dad, ordered a bath bench, a hospital bed, a wheelchair, and other stuff for Mom and then came and talked to me.

They both told me that I have been here way too long without a break and that I am going to burn myself out now just when things are "really" getting tough. The problem is after considering letting my Nephew replace me for three days or a week while I got away, I had the opportunity to work with him yesterday and was forced to remember what a worthless shiftless lazy piece of shit he really is.

Hospice says they can send aides over, but not one that stays here, like I'm going to leave my parents with some CNA that I have never even met, and hope he shows up for work that day so that they get fed?

They are right though, I need a break, I've gone from being angry and snappish to being depressed and weepy, I'm just plain burned out. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed it just seems like a marathon now, and I'm tired of running. I need some effing help dammit!

True, but also, as angry as I am with the Bush administration about the circumstances under which we got into Iraq, it is not a road we want to go down to impeach a president for fucking up getting us into a war. There will always be dicey intelligence. There will always be ideologically driven mistakes. Small Tales from Baltimore, Episode LXXIV:

Went out on a whim tonight for crabs at the city's oldest crabhouse, Obrycki's. Haku and I had to sit at the bar to eat, because, you know, it was a Saturday.

Had snow crabs as well as the good old Chesapeake blue swimmers (long may they swim!), and a bucket of the house brew.

The barkeep/waitress was run off her feet and taking abuse from the other waitresses because she was new to the bar and couldn't keep up. Left her a giant tip, and told her which Bible verse her name (Tabitha) comes from.

Stepped out a couple of times for a smoke and met a guy from Honduras named Salvador and a taxi driver from Nigeria named Olatunde. Salvador gave me a Honduran cigarette to smoke and Olatunde told me where to buy one of the comfortable-looking suits like he was wearing. And I gave Salvador a five-spot for watching out for my car.

Stabbed my thumb deep in the ball with a dull knife trying to clear out the meat from a smaller snow-crab leg, and discovered that one's own blood makes a tasty sauce to go with seafood.

We were there for five hours, and got home just in time for me to get a four-pack of Boddington's Pub Ale and a Macanudo to enjoy while I wind down and think about the diversity of Old Baltimore and the cool people you can meet here on the street if you're willing to just talk.

That's why there's rules of law about going to war. You can't just be "pretty sure". You have to have hard evidence and you don't want people fabricating that kind of evidence.

Now Charles Taylor is on trial for real, honest-to-goodness war crimes and I hope they hang him for it (hanging's too good for him...). And he reigned far too long.

Umm... didn't the people who made all those horrible loans that came crashing down break the economy rather than congress?

Loans made courtesy of the US government, backed by the US government. Packaged and sold at insanely low risk levels, because of this backing. And now, the same US government that caused the problems is presuming to fix the problem. Doesn't make much sense to me.

re: #402 Rightwingconspirator

Funny thing. I pull in this place to park for the night. Take pictures drink beer, all good. The next morning 5 am I see I'm parked at the bottom of a huge rockfall slope, and then I start to read the beware of bears signs "recent activity" etc. etc. Then I tell the ranger where I slept and he says "really" in that certain voice that is reserved for fools and kids...

Well, last week I finally came "face to face" so to speak with our neighborhood bear. I've seen him stumbling through the woods 150 or so feet from the front porch on the other side of the fence, off our property, once before sundown even... but last week, Wolfie was on the porch, barking out at the garbage cans that are right on the other side of the fence on the proch, and I step out onto the porch expecting no more than to see a mess of scattered garbage or maybe hear the bear waling off though the woods, like most of the times in the past.

Nope... I step out on the porch, and there he is, about 15 feet away, on the other side of the 6 foot wood fence, nuzzling through the garbage bags he has pulled out of the garbage cans, and Wolfie is standing right at the fence, barking at him, the bear no more than 5 feet away from the husky.

The bear couldn't give a shit about the dog or me. I looked for about 15 seconds and figured that bear is not bothered by the dog or me, and it would probably be best if I stepped back inside.

So I did.

Two Hours Before Neptune

Two hours before closest approach to Neptune in 1989, the Voyager 2 robot spacecraft snapped this picture. Clearly visible for the first time were long light-colored cirrus-type clouds floating high in Neptune's atmosphere. Shadows of these clouds can even be seen on lower cloud decks.

Most of Neptune's atmosphere is made of hydrogen and helium, which is invisible. Neptune's blue color therefore comes from smaller amounts of atmospheric methane, which preferentially absorbs red light. Neptune has the fastest winds in the Solar System, with gusts reaching 2000 kilometers per hour.

Speculation holds that diamonds may be created in the dense hot conditions that exist under the clouds-tops of Uranus and Neptune.

That's the thing. I remember though my ex-gfs father. He was this old former WWII B-24 pilot and when we met him at the airport he was walking without a care through the airport terminal smoking a cigarette. You should have seen people's reactions. I thought it was a hoot.

For your perusal, here are two kendo champions, radiating awesomeness.

It may be just a pipe dream of mine, but it seems to me that's what it would be like watching Racer X and Windsagio hold a debate, if either one of them had skillz.

Friendship...

1... When you are sad --I will help you get drunk and plot revenge against the bastard who made you sad.
2... When you are blue -- I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you
3... When you smile -- I will know you are thinking of something that I would probably want to be involved in.
4... When you are scared -- I will make fun of you every chance I get until you're NOT
5...When you are worried -- I will tell you stories about how much worse it could be until YOU STOP WHINING!
6... When you are confused -- I will try to use only little words.
7...When you are sick --Stay the hell away from me until you are well again. I don't want whateveryou have
8... When you fall -- I will laugh at you, you clumsy ass.
9... This is my oath.... I pledge it to the end. 'Why?' you may ask; Because you are my friend.

Remember: Friendship is just like pissing your pants, everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth. ;)

She's not involved in the Cato/Windy feud. I can't say I know her, but I don't think she meant it to be as negative as you thought she did.

I love hanging with WWII vets. They lived through everything that they expected to kill them - why worry about little shit like cigs or seat belts or too much booze?

My wife has a photo taken by her older sister - she was standing on the back seat while her dad was driving and mom was holding my new born wife. The speedometer reads about 120mph at the time... No, there were no belts on anyone. There were two other families in the car at the time too. But it just didn't register the same way - they'd already looked death in the eye and laughed as a result. My FiL was navy on PT boats, his brother was infantry with Patton (and hated remembering the Bulge - a southern guy in a bitch cold winter without appropriate clothing. He never forgave the army & this army vet doesn't blame him), his best friend was a P-51 pilot, and so on.

God bless them, everyone of them.
