Newt Gingrich Admits Serial Philandering

Politics • Views: 4,144

Newt Gingrich is one of many GOP politicians calling for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, because he’s so very concerned about “protecting the sanctity of traditional marriage.”

Gingrich’s concern doesn’t extend to his own marriages, though: Gingrich Admits to Affair During Clinton Impeachment.

Setting the stage for his entry into the presidential race, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., gave a radio interview to be broadcast today with Focus on the Family’s James Dobson, in which Gingrich for the first time publicly acknowledged cheating on his first and second wives.

“There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them,” Gingrich said during the interview. “I look back on those as periods of weakness and periods that I’m not only not proud of, but I would deeply urge my children and grandchildren not to follow in my footsteps.”

If I had to guess why Gingrich is coming out with this admission now, I’d say it’s probably because it was about to be revealed by other sources, so, like any good pandering religious right politician, he decided to make a public confession to James Dobson first and talk a lot about how pious he was even while cheating on his wives.

Great post CJ. The hypocrisy regarding sexuality (homo and hetero) is such an easy target with which to bludgeon the GOP with.

4 Gus  Sun, Aug 8, 2010 11:20:23am

Yes, praying. Heard that one before.

“There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them…”

That’s always the “get out of jail card” for these types.

Looks like career preservation is a much stronger motivator.

8 Charles Johnson  Sun, Aug 8, 2010 11:23:50am

I love the line about how he was praying even while doing wrong. I’m sure he and his mistresses (and if he’s confessing to two affairs, there are lots more, guaranteed) prayed fervently while getting it on. “Yes! Oh God!”

telling the truth during a deposition.

Exactly. What kind of person does something like that? How can you have shared your life with someone and then be utterly lacking in compassion towards that person as she lies dying?

I hate this economy of shame over sex. You can do whatever you want, apparently, as long as you show enough shame afterwards. Then you just do it again, and feel and show shame. And they want everyone else to feel shame, too, like gays, and people having sex out of wedlock, and pregnant teenagers.

It’s kinda gross.

From a celebrity gossip list:, even if it’s somewhat scurrilous:

Gingrich, Newt. Evil, egotistical conservative martinet. Draft-dodger. Divorced once; cheated/cheats on his wife, and reportedly used House offices for trysts. Has oral sex with women so he can claim he didn’t sleep with them. Forced ex-wife to sign divorce papers hours after her cancer surgery. Deadbeat dad.

42 webevintage  Sun, Aug 8, 2010 11:45:30am

On Newt’s website he posts his newsletter and this week he had one about Prop 8 commenting on how “sacred” marriage is.
There were a number of comments pointing out his BS, but the best one was:

hypocrisy is hypocrisy… it goes both ways.

Not really.
Unless there are a bunch of Dems out there talking about how “sacred” marriage is and letting the rest of us know how we should follow their “family values” while also fucking around on their wives with various folks of both the opposite (or same sex) who may or may not be “professionals” that I don’t know about.

And you can only throw philandering Dems into the mix IF they touted their “family value” life style or spend time discussing how gays made baby Jesus sad.

Why can’t you just admit that Gingrich is a hypocritical asshole who has no business telling judging anyone’s sexual morality?

I saw a bumper sticker. It read: ‘I’m a Christian. I’m not perfect, just forgiven.’ I think it speaks to the thought of a get out of jail free card.

I can’t figure out if people simply don’t understand what’s involved in forgiveness (from a religious perspective) or if they willfully ignore it.

IIRC from my earlier years as a Christian, the conditions for forgiveness is the same in Christianity as it is in Islam: There must be deep remorse followed by sincere repentance and a vow to strive mightily never to repeat the mistake. It’s not just, “Oh goody, I’m forgiven in advance, so I can just repeatedly do WTF I want and not have to concern myself with consequences.”

I hereby declare that Gingrich is a hypocritical asshole who has no business judging any body’s sexual morality. Hey, at least he’s not Palin.

Clinton is a philandering fool who got caught lying, the lying being the bad part. But he wasn’t a hypocrite. It gets frustrating to have Newt’s behavior equivocated to Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky. Other than they both were prone to affairs all comparisons are lost after that fact.

If I had to guess why Gingrich is coming out with this admission now, I’d say it’s probably because it was about to be revealed by other sources, so, like any good pandering religious right politician, he decided to make a public confession to James Dobson first and talk a lot about how pious he was even when he was cheating on his wives.

Definitely.

The part about urging his kids and grandkids not to follow in his footsteps is just precious.

I once knew a long-time recovering alcoholic whose favorite stories were about when he was still drinking, all the crazy shit he got up to, and the trouble it caused him.

Trouble was, he didn’t confine the storytelling to AA meetings. He told his tales in front of his children, who sucked up the message about how cool their dad was when he was a roustabout.

He’s dead now, and his son is a raging alcoholic somewhere on the skids in Florida. And his daughter is on the run from her latest alcoholic baby daddy.

Good job, Newt.

He ran for pres a few times with no success so when his cheating came out, that was enough for people to say goodbye to him forever. And frankly, it’s anybody’s guess what he actually wants.

He seems to be putting together a campaign as the relatively moderate, pro-biz, establishment candidate.

But the base wants a REAL conservative, not someone who was pro-choice, pro-gay and pro-gun control just 10 years ago as MA guv. The gop base is still pissed off about having to suck it up and support McCain, who they never liked because his mavericky nature made him less extreme and less reliably conservative.

Indeed. And it’s true that lot of politicians on both sides are alley cats and cheats whose spouses would be justified in tossing them out the back door.

One difference between Newt and, say, Clinton or Ted Kennedy, is that Newt’s public persona is solidly anchored in a socio-political movement that makes a front-burner issue of sexual morality. Abortion, gay rights, unmarried welfare moms, media culture; every issue for them comes back to what goes on in the bedroom. This does not excuse the egregious personal conduct of Democrats at all, but it does move GOP/Socon hypocrisy to a whole different level.

I don’t think the state should be granting marriage licenses at all, either gay or straight. I think that infringes on the 1st amendment.

Well, if marriage isn’t an official institution, with laws limiting polygamy and incest for instance, then how can there be any legal breaks for married couples? How can we permit spouses to inherit without the State taking a cut? How can we allow them to merge their finances and pay their federal income tax on a joint return?

It really looks to me as though the aim in all this is to set up conditions in which the public will throw up its hands in exasperation at the pass “marriage” has come to in the law and just vote the whole institution out of official existence.

So I’m curious—what are the conditions for forgiveness in Judaism?

For sins against God, one asks forgiveness directly from God, with Yom Kippur being seen as the moment when one is most immediately making atonement and asking forgiveness.

For sins against another person, you must go to them, ask forgiveness, and offer restitution. They, in turn, are required to forgive. (If they don’t, you are required to ask forgiveness the three times, after that you’ve fulfilled your technical obligation.)

re: #237 SanFranciscoZionist

I’ll do the short version. They cheated on their wives, and they were Democrats. Ooga booga, you lose!!

My note: none of those presidents ever, to my knowledge, swanned around talking about sexual morality.

Now, let’s talk about Eisenhower.

The private morality of politicians just wasn’t much of an issue until religious right affiliated forces decided to make it one during the Clinton years.
Earlier attempts to make it an issue generally failed, with the public generally rejecting the revelations as tawdry and irrelevant.

This was true even in the 1880s. When Republicans tried to make an issue of Grover Cleveland’s illegitimate child during the 1884 election, the public was shocked: Shocked that anyone would stoop so low as to make a public issue of it, that is. They rallied around Cleveland and he won.
Earlier, President Chester Arthur, a widower, had regularly brought a high-priced call girl to the White House. He eventually moved her in. This was common knowledge among Washington reporters but they never said a word about it publicly. They figured the public would be incensed with them if they violated Arthur’s privacy.

In an interview in the 1990s, Barry Goldwater said that he had been well aware of JFK’s philandering at the time but it had not even crossed his mind to use this against JFK politically. One factor, of course, was that he and JFK were close friends personally. Even if they had not been, that kind of political tactic just would not have worked for Goldwater or anyone else in those days.

I may have missed a few turns in this conversation.

That said, I’m sorry, I still don’t feel as though we’re having a real conversation here about it.

I may have missed a few turns and am not sure where the convos are. Here is my tally:

-DF getting harangued for saying he might still vote for Newt even though he’s a Black Belt Scoundrel

-Somebody still bringing Clinton up, now Hillary is getting dragged in

-Questioning the Afghan war now: partisan, or pragmatic?

SFZ: methinks that you were pragmatically questioning the Afghan war but were responded to by being assumed to be a partisan hack. I don’t recall, but think that is scurrilous because you are a non-hack and I would not expect it. The irony is that people usually responding in such a way are partisan hacks and a lot of them are gone to CJ’s credit. The place got better.

Ironically, what I sense but hope I’m wrong about, it DF getting harangued for being a partisan hack as well. DF has a pretty consistently been a non-partisan hack as well.

I remember when this place got a little too much RW Echo going on: let’s not let it turn into a LW Echo chamber. I really don’t care if it’s right or left centric but sense if it sways too far one direction the Echo Chamber Effect gets stronger. Let’s keep it down the middle, non-idiotarian and honest.

re: #302 Shiplord Kirel

The bolded part is not entirely true. Grover Cleveland most likely would have lost behind that scandal had two things not happened:

1. The first was revelation of just how corrupt his GOP opponent, James Gillespie Blaine was. Cleveland had fathered a child out of wedlock, Blaine had done much worse, using the office of the Speaker of the House to push through a railroad lane deal. Republicans had taunted Cleveland with chants of “Ma! Ma! Where’s my Pa?”*, but the Democrats were now able to reply with “Blaine, Blaine, you oughta be ashamed. A Continental Liar from the state of Maine.”

2. A preacher speaking at a major Blaine event (with Blaine present) attacked the Democrats as the “party of Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion”. The last had little effect, but his slams of Catholicism and alcohol hurt Blaine a great deal.

* After Grover Cleveland won the election, Democrats answered Republicans who still pulled out the “Where’s my Pa?” chant with “Gone to the White House. Ha, ha, ha!”

Whatever the particulars, both Clinton and Gingrich were slime for breaking their marriage vows…nothing more, nothing less.

Different kinds of slime and Clinton is not relevant any more. Newt and his hypocrisy is very relevant now.

I do question the consistency of blowing off accountability of staying in committed relationships when you’re in a position of power and influence: it’s either wrong or not. When you’re in a position of power and influence there is supposed to be a some level of leading by example. You also run the risk of being leveraged to blackmail if you deal in hanky panky.

If it’s truly not a big deal, both those points are moot.

The difference between the Dems and GOP is the blatant hypocrisy from the GOP on ‘Family Values.’ At least the Dems are riding on the high horse about it.

That should earn Newt some brownshirt points when the time comes.

Well, Grant and Lincoln come off very well in the series, while in the second book (Grant Comes East) Newt aims at Dan Sickles pretty fiercely. But Sickles was an opportunist who did merit harsh criticism. Newt also hammers George Pickett of the Confederates in book 2 (like Michael Sharra, he tells the story of Pickett’s division from the perspective of Brigadier General Lewis A. “Lo” Armistead.

The putsch to remove Clinton started long before allegations about a BJ. The BJ was just a convenient weapon with which to bludgeon Clinton.

Gingrich was one of the people leading the charge.

It’s really not that confusing, but…

Clinton: cheated, had lots of sex, but never attacked anyone for breaking the 7th Commandment as he figured it was not the gov’ts job to do so and why should anyone care except the people involved.

Gingrich: cheated, had lots of sex, but viciously campaigned against anyone who did so because it was morally reprehensible and the government must act as a moral authority and Vote for me, Newt Gingrich because I am pure and chaste and would never do such a thing unlike those godless Democrats.

…definition of hypocrite.

Low Road to Splitsville

The numbers are just one of many we-kid-you-not dimensions to this tale. In late 2005, Ritchie Scaife peered through a window at one of her husband’s many homes and saw him with one Tammy Sue Vasco, a woman whose colorful criminal history includes an arrest for prostitution. And this tryst was no one-afternoon stand. Ritchie Scaife describes Vasco in court filings as her husband’s “mistress.”

A Vast Right-Wing Hypocrisy
Richard Mellon Scaife, billionaire bankroller of conservative crusades, spent heavily to expose Bill Clinton’s “Troopergate” misbehavior. Now Scaife’s divorce from his second wife, Ritchie, is providing another unsavory saga—adultery! addiction! assault! dognapping!?!—as both parties let loose to V.F.
by Michael Joseph Gross
February 2008

Over many years, in the five households the couple shared, the wife hired scores of servants to help take care of her rich husband. Then, in 2005, she hired someone to tail him. Margaret Ritchie Rhea Battle Scaife (whose friends call her Ritchie) suspected Richard Mellon Scaife (whose friends call him Dick) of committing adultery, so she enlisted the services of an investigator. It was a private act that would have very public consequences. Richard Mellon Scaife is the best-known living member of Pittsburgh’s storied Mellon clan, whose eponymous bank made the family a 19th-century fortune, which grew steadily with diversified investments, including major coal, steel, and real-estate interests, and Gulf Oil Corporation. Scaife, who owns several newspapers, is a major backer of conservative causes; his political donations fueled the rise of the New Right and its moral crusade against Bill Clinton, making Scaife the central figure in Hillary Clinton’s “vast right-wing conspiracy.” In the 1990s, his gift of $1.8 million to The American Spectator funded investigations into Whitewater and Bill Clinton’s personal life, including David Brock’s notorious “Troopergate” exposé, which led to Paula Jones’s sexual-harassment suit against the president.

In December of 2005, the private detective proved Ritchie’s fears to have been well founded: he took pictures showing the reclusive 75-year-old billionaire with a woman named Tammy Vasco, a tall, blonde 43-year-old whose criminal history includes two arrests for prostitution. The pair was photographed at Doug’s Motel, a roadside establishment near Pittsburgh, where rooms rent for $49 a night, or $31 for three hours.

Continues.

Yeah, but then Grant comes east and defeats Lee comprehensively. Plus since Lincoln survives the war and Sherman’s March is not needed, Reconstruction would have had a better chance in that scenario. You can’t accuse Newt of being a Neo-Confederate based on that book trilogy.

In the book, the Confederate officers are all decent, noble men trying to uphold an honorable old system. Meanwhile the Union officers are a bunch of vain assholes.

Sorry, but what sane non-neo-confederate fantasizes about having a do-over of Gettysburg? Combine this with his recent race and religion-baiting and you’ve got a nasty overall portrait of the man.

Most importantly, he’d easily be the most divisive president of our time. His rhetoric exists at one level only—incendiary fever pitch.

A thorough and credible account, like when she filed a sworn affidavit in the Paula Jones case saying “During the 1992 Presidential campaign there were unfounded rumors and stories circulated that Mr. Clinton had made unwelcome sexual advances toward me in the late seventies. … These allegations are untrue ….” Or the fact that he sent a congratulatory letter to her nursing facility that had a handwritten note to her saying “I admire you very much” which she says must be a “thank you for not telling people I raped you” note. I know that there are all sorts of false allegations out there. In fact, didn’t we go round and round about how not every rape allegation is free of error?

One has to go with internal consistency of the accuser’s story and the past performance of the accused.

I don’t reflexively defend “my team”, nor accept any old allegation against the “other team”.

It’s gonna take a few more election cycles, but if the gop continues its attacks on all the groups it currently seems to despise, then they will alienate virtually everyone who’s non-white and non-heterosexual. That’s just not the party of the future in a diverse urbanized society.

re: #442 palomino

Maybe I can’t look at this objectively. I grew up in the South, and had to listen to all manner of vile racist invective sandwiched in between the idiotic fantasies of “the South will rise again.”

So when an old conservative southerner writes a “history” of the Civil War where “South wins! South wins!” (even if just a big battle) I’m VERY skeptical of his motives, of what thought process led him to even conceive of such a thing.

A lot of historians have written about how Lee could have won the Gettysburg campaign. Newt was exploring that. I also think he wanted to write an alternative history of the Civil War were the draconian methods used to finally defeat the south are not needed.

I missed yesterday’s discussion, but I just went back and your comments that others in this thread have pointed out. You find the name “Cordoba” chilling? That’s proof of your ignorance.

At the time of the Caliphate, Cordoba was the most civilized, most cultured, most peaceful place in the entire world, with the biggest library, the first-ever university, a place where all three Abrahamic faiths lived and studied and conducted commerce cooperatively.

Cordoba during the caliphate was the most welcoming place in the world for Jews; we only came under threat there when Christians retook the territory. Cordoba during the caliphate is where the greatest Jewish scholar of all time, Maimonedes, wrote and presented his commentaries on the Talmud.

Cordoba is the absolute *perfect* name for an Islamic cultural center in a 20% Jewish city like NY.

Maybe Newt’s work is all first-rate scholarship with no ulterior motive. But over the years he’s done his share of race baiting, supporting the southern strategy, and now freaking out over Muslims.

So I find it hard to believe that his dreams of southern conquest at Gettysburg have nothing to do with his generally antiquated views on a lot of issues.

One of the two buildings on Park Place is owned by utility company Con Edison, even though Soho Properties told officials and the public that it owns the entire parcel. And any potential sale by Con Ed faces a review by the state’s Public Service Commission.

“We never heard anything about Con Ed whatsoever,” said a stunned Julie Menin, the chairwoman of Community Board 1, which passed a May resolution supporting the mosque.

re: #449 Dark_Falcon

A lot of historians have written about how Lee could have won the Gettysburg campaign. Newt was exploring that. I also think he wanted to write an alternative history of the Civil War were the draconian methods used to finally defeat the south are not needed.

Alternative history is interesting. Any number of people think about what-if’s. One such alternative history had the civil war ending after McClellan’s victory in the Peninsular campaign—-and there was no spate of amendments, no emancipation proclamation, none of that. Slavery was simply confined to its quarters, so to speak, and abolition had to wait until some time around WW1.

Many things that have happened could just as easily have happened differently. Some things had a certain inevitability to them. Moving the pieces back to where they stood in 1861 and replaying the game in simulation helps us understand how much of that part of history was inevitable, and how much, contingent.

The fact that the war departed from Napoleonic tradition and went into extra innings could have served as a harbinger of the course WW1 would take, though no one seems to have understood the implications of the trenches and wire obstacles around Petersburg at the end. Politically, the long struggle gave the Republicans time and courage to pass Homestead Act, Morrill Act, Abolition, various key amendments, and more. We cleaned house and laid a foundation for a better future. Things worked out better than if the South had won, or if it had lost in a way that kicked the can down the road.

There have been other hinges of fate. In WW2, the Germans might have won the Battle of Britain and gone on to conquer the British isles. In the other direction, a plot to assassinate Hitler early in the war might have succeeded.

The U.S. might have lost at Midway.

The moral of the story is that alternative-history fiction helps illuminate the fact that we cannot take too much comfort from having got lucky in the past. Such luck must not be mistaken for destiny. We can get unlucky.

What lovely people. And by lovely I actually mean horrible, bigoted and evil.

In 1996, responding to a complaint from an AFA member who was participating in an AFA campaign targeting gay journalists, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram transferred a gay editor out of a job that occasionally required him to work with schoolchildren. The AFA targeted the editor due to cartoon strips he created, which were published in gay magazines. The paper apparently acted on the AFA’s unsubstantiated statement that the editor was “preoccupied with the subjects of pedophilia and incest.”[71]

In 2000, Vice president Tim Wildmon spoke out against gay-straight alliance clubs in schools, stating, “We view these kinds of clubs as an advancement of the homosexual cause.”[72]

Personally, I don’t think age should matter and 60 something is fine to run for office if you’re smart and capable, but the GOP has to fight against a younger audience now (40 somethings). This ain’t our dad’s generation anymore.

No, I really don’t think it needs looking into, considering the source. If credible reports show up elsewhere that there was some impropriety, then I’ll start caring more. Stories from Fox News and the New York Post about the Park51 project have zero credibility.

If you look at this map:

You can see that their building is part of a contiguous lot. The previous owners sold them the whole building including the warehouse next door. Like I said before this is just a pending agreement with Con Edison either involving leasing the land (which is not uncommon) or also signing a utility access agreement.

The dash-dot line labeled REUC (Real Estate of Utility Companies) can either be a utility line or border. The lease portion may very well be southeast of that line.

Much adieu about nothing yet again.

Who needs courts, when we can play this game?

We all know that the criminal justice system is designed to aquit many guilty people in order to reduce the chances of convicting the innocent. Keeping that in mind, how can one fairly criticize someone who believes that an accused person may be guilty even if he/she was not convicted?
A finding of not guilty does not necessarily equal innocence.

A finding of not guilty does not necessarily equal innocence.

Because in none of these cases were charges even brought. Nor is the testimony of the alleged victims themselves even indicative that they believe there was a crime.

That’s a far cry from even an acquittal. It’s nothing, air, fluff. It’s literally a baseless allegation.

re: #488 lostlakehiker

Agreed. Newt does have problems, but his books don’t really add up to strong evidence of Neo-Confederate proclivities. And I do think his being politically active is a good thing for the GOP right now. He is helping the partry focus on economic issues rather than bogging down on cultural issues that don’t draw wide support. That’ll help the party win and said victory will constrain Obama (something I want to happen).

re: #563 Walter L. Newton

No… and I would hope that we are not going to start making jokes about the French?

This one isn’t particular to the French…in fact, many of the Legion are foreigners, no?

An officer of the Legion is assigned to the command of a small unit stationed in the desert somewhere in North Africa. As he is being shown around his new post, he asks, delicately, “Er…when the men have…er….needs…all the way out here, how does that work out?”

“Oh, we’ve got the camel for that,” his lieutenant says cheerfully.

“Dear God,” thinks the officer, but he tries to keep an open mind, while assuring himself that he would never stoop to bestiality no matter how lonely he gets.

However, the day comes when he just can’t stand it any more, and he tells his lieutenant, “I think I need to use the camel. I’ve got…needs.”

So they wash the camel, and put a pretty harness on the camel, and bring her out, and there’s even a little stepladder, and the officer puts it behind the camel, gets up on it, drops his pants, and goes for it.

He becomes aware, after a bit, that his lieutenant, and the guy in charge of the camel, and a few passing Legionnaires, are all staring at him in apparent shock and horror.

“What?” he asks. “This isn’t how the men use the camel?”

The lieutenant steps forward. “Sir, when the men request the camel, they ride it into Casablanca. There are whorehouses there.”

You can’t make this stuff up. Serial adulterer Newt Gingrich resigns as Speaker in 1998. His heir apparent Bob Livingston has a grip on the Speaker slot for about 4 seconds before he is also revealed to be a serial adulterer. Livingston resigns his congressional seat and is replaced by…wait for it…David Vitter.

The two leading contenders for the gop nod BOTH QUIT their former elected offices—newt in the house 12 years ago, and sarah as gov last year. And neither one has ever given a good reason why they quit.

Some real quality in that pool of candidates./////

In fairness to Gingrich, I think he did serve 11 terms in the House and was basically forced out as Speaker. Palin on the other hand…

oh, Sarah gave a reason.

“Because it’s haaaarrrd! People were saying mean things about me!” Which of course would never be a problem if she were president.

That’s the actual reason she gave, and continues to give… even though we all know she left because someone offered her a bunch of money. (I’m assuming the payoff to get a president to quit is much, much more than was needed for a small-state governor)

If Sarah couldn’t stand up to the Democratic Party of Alaska (not exactly a powerhouse), how the hell is she gonna stand up to anything as prez? What a joke.

591 Kronocide  Sun, Aug 8, 2010 3:39:14pm

I believed some of Clinton dirt (some degree of it) in the 90’s. After what I’ve seen in the last two years the credibility of the accusations are even more tenuous.

To my credit the Mena Drug deal and Vince Foster stuff were laughers and made me think something was wrong.

His conduct may still be relevant on a comparative basis, as a yardstick with which to measure future candidates.

OK, it’s “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him,” isn’t it?

But that’s not the point. The point is that the speech that follows is a disingenuous appeal to the mob.

Of course, the Reduced Shakespeare Company uses it a transition point in their Complete Works of William Shakespeare—“So let’s bury him, already, and get on to MY play! Antony and Cleopatra!”

Actually, I said:

Why are you belaboring the point, unless you intend to draw some equivalence between Gingrich, who has expressed interest in the presidency, and Clinton ,who cannot run again, and has expressed no interest in any other office?

Not only is this a weak attempt at tu quoque, it is irrelevant, even if true. That’s what I said above, and yet you still seem to really want to argue the point.

Why?

re: #531 Dark_Falcon

Wow, that is a fucking lie, Dark Falcon.

Honestly, this blows my mind, dude.

I cannot believe you can be reading LGF this past year and still vote for this guy, a guy who IS bad craziness, personified. He’s like a tulpa of the Tea Party loons.

I just don’t understand how your mind works, how you can seem so rational at times, and then suddenly just change gears, gloss over all the awfulness of this awful, awful person and then give him your vote

No, its: Obama is a fool when it comes to foreign policy and defense and Newt is not. Obama is also clueless about economic matters, and Newt is not. Viewed that way, Newt looks fairly good.

re: #458 sagehen

Yea, I read recently about the caliphate. The caliphate back then was a safe haven and a paradise compared to the rest of Europe. I agree. Maybe the name therefore was correctly chosen. I don’t know. Any previous comment I made concerning the name was based on ignorance to which I apologize. I do however, reject the idea of state = religion-based. I prefer a secular state. The fact that the Cordoba-name is seen as a step to a “new Caliphate” (how heavenly it can be) is a wrong one, but an easy one to make. Real islamophobes eagerly use this for their own agenda. I reject this.

re: #610 SueG

Well, guess what? I’m a MUSLIM lady too. FYI, there are plenty of secular Iranian Muslims who are indeed Islamophobic due to their (or their parents’) bad experiences with the Islamic Revolution in Iran. America in 2010 is not comparable to the Iran of 1979, so her fears—while understandable, based on her background & the loss of her clearly beloved mother—are not necessarily rational.

In addition, she writes:

That is why the prospect of a mosque near Ground Zero — or a church or a synagogue or any religious or nationalistic monument or symbol — troubles me.

Do you agree with that as well? Just wondering.

Gee.. where have the grey areas gone? It’s not all black and white.

Okay, that’s the second time you’ve put words in my mouth. First, you implied that I labeled you a hater because you disagreed with me (you still haven’t shown me where I did that), and now you’re implying that I only see the world in black & white. On what are you basing that? I’ve only been participating here for about 5 months, but I’ve made a couple of thousand comments and created 18 pages, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding examples.

614 ihateronpaul  Mon, Aug 9, 2010 7:13:24am

Newt makes me fucking sick. I fucking hate him. I’m not voting for him.
