Tech Note: Email Comment Notifications Improved

LGF • Views: 3,499

The new feature of the day is an option for registered users to subscribe to a thread of comments, but only receive replies to your own comments.

At the bottom left of the comment posting form is a pop-up menu that displays these choices:

Not subscribed is the default state. You won’t get any email. Select this option if you want to cancel your subscription to a comment thread.

Email all comments sends you an email copy of every new comment posted in the thread, starting when you subscribe. This can be overwhelming with comment threads for front-page articles, but works well for LGF Pages authors who want to keep track of comments on their Pages.

Email replies to me sends you an email for every new comment that is a reply to one of your comments. This can help prevent missing replies in a long thread. (A reply is any comment that contains the LGF standard reply line, produced by clicking the “Reply” or “Quote” button on a comment’s header line.)

For more information on this feature, see the previous posts:

I ignore enough email already. But I do think the 'email replies to me' option is a nice touch. That will keep the volume relatively low, unless of course someone writes something especially vile...in which case they'd better hope they didn't use their work email.

When I was on a couple other forums with email replies, i actually just started using the Thudnerbird mail sort to give them their own folder, so I had my normal email, and then there was the fourm email reply folder. it was great because all the comments on the forum were nested, so you'd get these massive flamewars that would cascade. there'd be some snit, I'd respond and then go to bed, then I'd wake up and there'd be 300 replies in that forum folder o_O

Q. People have like just, for example, the first one is "Japanese culture."
A. Yes.
Q. And the second one is "Anime." What is that?
A. Anime is a Japanese animation, cartoons.
Q. Is that what some of the examples in this exhibit represent?
A. Yes, this was taken from the Anime board.
Q. It is called Animu & Mango?
A. That is a misspelling, actually. It's Anime & Mango. That's an intentional misspelling on the board there.

Good Lord, they actually took an image from the Anime board at 4-Chan. The mind shudders to think of what they picked.

re: #32 windsagio

dunno, good question.
the "email all comments" works AFTER you click it, and will mail you notice when comments are made after that point (it doesn't e-mail ALL the comments on a thread). Which is why I've been using it only at the end of a thread that's dying out, when I'm interested to see any additional comments that might be made there.

If I click the "email replies" button on THIS COMMENT, then I guess I will only get replies made directly to THIS comment, not any comments I make?

Let's see what happens. Would someone reply to this please?

Hezballah might have overplayed their hand on their latest stunt.

UN demands proof on Hariri assassination claim

A United Nations court is demanding the Lebanese militia group Hezbollah hand over all material that it claims implicates Israel in the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister Rafiq Hariri.

A UN tribunal is investigating the assassination of Mr Hariri in a truck bombing five years ago.

It is expected to release its initial findings later this year and many expect the court to indict members of Hezbollah.

It's honestly the truth. I desperately DESPERATELY want to see her make a play for President, fail utterly, and then become some sort of fascinating human pop-culture artifact that never goes away and has a nebulous career that relies on her celebrity. Pitchwoman, guest on the Match Game, reality show, whatever. Put CC Deville, Sarah Palin, John Rocker, and, I dunno, Shaggy 2 Dope in a house and film it. The ratings would be immense. You KNOW it could happen.

And after Sarah Palin has starred in her fifth Lifetime movie, and she's old, and we're old, one of us will say "man, remember when that lady ran for PRESIDENT! 2012 was fucked up!"

And then we'll laugh and wheeze. :D

Permits should not be granted to build even one more mosque in the United States of America, let alone the monstrosity planned for Ground Zero. This is for one simple reason: each Islamic mosque is dedicated to the overthrow of the American government.

Kinda funny, the popup window when I got there was for some book called "Tortured for Christ" about all the persecution the Christians have endured.

It isn't hard to get a bunch of people together to point and laugh at the ridiculous Palestinian grievance theater; the car swarms, the coffin swarms, the lies about promoting terrorism, the lies about their self-imposed victimhood. But when Christians are doing the whining and hating on other people, it's automagically legitimate. Because Christians are hating on the mosque, it's A-okay, according to this guy.

American Muslims Christians are being radicalized every single day in American mosques on Fox News. We are sowing the seeds of our own destruction by allowing these improvised explosive devices to be established in community after community.

Thank you for reminding me why I'm not pulling the R lever. Too radical for my blood.

I really love this new feature, Charles, and especially the fine-grained way it is tuned.

Now, if I write a scurrilous attack on some bonehead in the form of a limerick or sea-chantey or a lengthy screed in heroic couplets, I don't have to go scrolling back through days of dead threads to see if their esprit d'escalier has finally kicked in and allowed them to render up a witty comeback.

Most of them never do, most of them simply can't, but trying to find out the hard way and being disappointed over and over again was a bit of a grind.

That is neat... now you can be notified by email when you are being ignored... modern technology, gotta love it.

re: #196 darthstar

For Dio: The Only Appropriate Tribute

“Shit,” I mumbled in shock.

“What’s up, man? Everything OK?” Stanley, my friend in the cubicle opposite me, poked his head over the wall like the neighbor from Home Improvement. I hated when he did that. Trying to hold a conversation with somebody peeking down at you over a wall while you remain sitting at your desk is so fundamentally awkward. Your seated posture, which seemed so natural a second ago, suddenly feels stupid and inappropriate.

“Dio just died,” I recited to him, like I had only memorized the words phonetically and had no idea as to their meaning.

“What? Who?”

I stood up abruptly, the back of my knees straightening so quickly that they sent my wheeled office chair spinning out into the corridor between cubicle rows.

“Whoa, what’s going on, dude?” Stanley asked, coming around the barrier to stare into my face. “Oh shit. I know that look. That’s the ‘I’m going out to get supernaturally tanked and engage in a series of increasingly wacky shenanigans that accidentally end in tragedy’ look. Am I right?”

“No, Stanley,” I informed him, adjusting the length of my shirt-cuffs on my wrists and straightening my tie, “What happens next is very deliberate. In a moment, I am going to take the elevator to the ground floor, where I will exit this building. I will proceed two blocks east to Promenade Plaza, where I will strip naked and lay siege to the doughnut shop. If police arrive, I will maul them with my teeth. I will escape on foot, and make my way to the fairgrounds out by the paper mill. Once there, I will burn down the circus. Then I am going to steal the largest, fastest car I can find, and I am going to crash that car at a terrible speed into the oldest and most sacred looking tree I can find. I will then mouth-fuck the OnStar operator from the wreckage.”

All measure of reason drained from Stanley’s face.

“But why?” He asked plainly.

“Because Dio taught me, in part, what it is to be a man. Oh, he did not teach the rational lessons: He did not teach me morality, or responsibility, or restraint. No, Stanley, he taught me that being a man means sometimes ruining things in the most extravagant fashion possible. Because you can, and because it’s awesome. And Dio died today, so now I am going to ruin things. I am going to ruin everything, Stanley. For Dio.”

I took another bite of Danish; I would need the calories.

“But first, Stanley, first I am going to orally pleasure the receptionist – your fiancé – on top of the copier. I will set the machine for 666 copies, and if she has not climaxed by the time it’s finished making them, I will throw her out the window. I’ll be sure to mail one to you, buddy.”

“W… wh…”

“What’s that? Why? You want to know why, again? Because you didn’t know his name, Stanley. You didn’t know his god damn name. But you will now. It was Ronnie James, incidentally. Ronnie James Motherfucking Dio. But that’s okay: I promise this time, you won’t soon forget it.”

I polished off the rest of my coffee, and gently pushed him aside.

“Welp, I gotta be off now to pleasure your woman and commit some Tribute Crimes. Oh, and Stanley?” I turned, clapping him reassuringly on the shoulder, “Ride the tiger, buddy. Ride the tiger.”

And can you teach me how to dance real slow
Well, I know that you're in love with him

86 Days to Decide: Activists Say Tea Party Imposters Infiltrating Elections

As the midterm election nears, allegations are surfacing across the country that Democrats are exploiting conservatives' faith in the Tea Party name by putting up bogus candidates in November -- the claim is that those "Tea Party" candidates will split the GOP vote and clear the way for Democratic victories.

The theories may prove to be more than just conspiracy talk. Some of the allegations are coming directly from local Tea Party activists who are trying to flag the media and election officials as soon as they smell something fishy on the ballot. And they say they've got proof.

"It's obvious it's a Democratic play," said Jason Gillman, a Tea Party activist from Traverse City, Mich.

His life story was fairly middle of the road - and his politics on guns certainly were fairly centrist for a democrat. His healthcare scheme for Vermont wasn't all that different from Romneys in Mass.

He was a middle of the road candidate in the democrat primary - and when you are in the middle of the road you tend to get mowed down by both sides in primaries.

Two things on this story:

Second, I notice that the Republicans there pulling childish FoxNews crap:

To all those morons who claim Evolution must be false because "We've never seen it happen."

Evolution at Lightning Speed: Fish Adapts in Just 3 Years

Within an incredibly brief period of three years, a small fish has evolved to survive temperatures that are cold enough to have killed its ancestors. The lowly stickleback, a fish no bigger than a human finger, has accomplished something that many scientists had thought impossible. It adapted genetically to a radically different environment and passed that change on to its progeny in just three generations.

At the end of a three-year experiment, scientists at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, demonstrated that third-generation sticklebacks had increased their cold-water tolerance by a significant 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 degrees Fahrenheit.) The research, published in the current issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, involved scientists from Switzerland, Sweden and Canada, and it built upon other work at several additional institutions.

Sticklebacks were saltwater fish until the end of the last ice age, about 15,000 years ago, when many were trapped in freshwater lakes behind receding glaciers. They didn't just adapt to that very different environment. They thrived, changing rapidly to meet changing conditions while abandoning traits, like body armor that was needed in the ocean but not in a lake, and producing radically different species in lake after lake after lake.

the music didn't die, Buddy Holly did...the guy was trying his best to do a Dylanesque anthem and failed miserably...the quality of the music alone is enough to sink the song, let alone the weird, nonsensical chorus...bad stuff, and the fact that it was a hit might tell you something about pop music and the business in general...just my opinion

Hey, my generation grew up listening to weird, nonsensical chorus, so that doesn't bother me that much. The rest of the music is a melancholic recapitulation of McLean's his own youth and musical experiences. There's a part about the Stones, by the way:

So come on, Jack, be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devils only friend
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

"Proactive" in war means being the aggressor.

And, I think it's a brand name for an acne remedy. Or is that "Proactiv"? (without the e)

I think you're right about the acne.

In war, just saying the "aggressor" would be more precise. I've found, especially at work, that "proactive" is always, and i mean always code for an actual, specific action...so i usually pipe up and ask the originator what they actually mean!

exactly. most people dislike meetings. me, i don't mind so much. i'm ruthless. i'm the guy who will ask, very quietly but with daggered eyes, the flak to expound on exactly what 'proactive' entails in that context.

Meetings called to discuss why things aren't being done, meetings to decide what should be done, meetings to plan meetings, meetings to summarize meetings, meetings to increase reporting about meetings, meetings to ream people out for complaining that the reason things aren't getting done is because they're always in gd meetings.

And of course, meetings to publicly excoriate anyone who dared to ask a question when the Corporate Idiot Du Jour, who didn't even know what city he was in, asked, "Any questions?"

Just a few of the many reasons I left the corporate world 23 years ago and haven't looked back.
