Eric Cantor Joins the Bigot Brigade

Politics • Views: 3,976

It’s just unbelievable; the entire Republican Party is signing on to the “Ground Zero Mosque” freak show, even people who have been known in the past to speak out against bigotry — like Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA): Cantor on the Ground Zero mosque.

Cantor is clearly aware that his opposition to the Cordoba House violates American freedom of religion, but hey! I mean, come on! These are Muslims we’re talking about!

Everybody knows America’s built on the rights of free expression, the rights to practice your faith, but come on.

My cousin in Richmond is good friends with Cantor … I’m going to call and ask him to urge Eric to reconsider. Eric is a good man, perhaps he’ll realize his error and make amends. The adults in the GOP need to step up.

You mean our Constitutional Republic? If not, what the hell do you mean?

He’s going to have to apologize for this one. I’m sure it’s the kind of thing wingnuts say in private but it’s not the kind of thing they can get away with in the open. They need to at least keep a think veil on the opposition to Constitutionally protected freedoms.

Mob violence? Eminent domain?

Iowa GOP urges revolution after judiciary performs its Constitutional duties

The federal judge who overturned a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in California because it violated the U.S. Constitution “seems to think he is a king, and further thinks he has the ‘authority’ to ignore the will of the people,” said Kim Lehman, one of three Iowans on the Republican National Committee. Therefore, she contends, there is only one response to this sort of “tyranny.”

“I believe the proper response is to do what the founders did in the Declaration of Independence, that after many attempts to reason with the King of England with no success, decided to withdraw from England and its force of laws without representation — which they defined as tyranny,” she said.

Lehman was responding to a questionnaire from Christian radio host Steve Deace, a long-time supporter of passing an amendment to the state’s constitution banning same-sex marriage who now opposes the effort in the wake of the California ruling. He said the ruling, and the eventual support of the U.S. Supreme Court render the amendment “obsolete,” so he asked many of Iowa’s Republican leaders to weigh in on how to proceed.

Lehman said judges who believe “their power is greater then the will of the people” will, “be faced with a revolution against a government who has abandoned the rule of law and its own people.”

“We must reject the outlaw acts of judges who act outside the power of the people,” she said. “Iowa is no different–we must be allowed to decide our laws and the courts have no jurisdiction over the will of the people nor does the federal government have the powers it is asserting against the states. We must educate the people of their God given liberties and the rule of law.”

this is one of those deals where a nice Jewish boy from Richmond, VA (the state of my birth) has to get votes from a lot of people who are not necessarily going to be sympathetic to him unless he solidly represents their views. in other words, politics makes people do things they do not always want to do. But the trick is to find a middle ground on the issue where you do the right thing (supporting the mosque project) but also convince the naysayers. I think one way to do it is to explain that this project will be under MUCH more scrutiny than a typical mosque project. And that the builders are going to be well aware of that. It’s a tough line to walk and it ain’t easy, but the great ones find a way.

ALERT GLENN BECK AT ONCE!!!

Gold Coin Sellers Angered by New Tax Law

Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Form 1099s will become a means of reporting to the Internal Revenue Service the purchases of all goods and services by small businesses and self-employed people that exceed $600 during a calendar year. Precious metals such as coins and bullion fall into this category and coin dealers have been among those most rankled by the change.

This provision, intended to mine what the IRS deems a vast reservoir of uncollected income tax, was included in the health care legislation ostensibly as a way to pay for it. The tax code tweak is expected to raise $17 billion over the next 10 years, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.

The “serial stabber” who has gotten notoriety during the past several days has been identified.

[Link: abcnews.go.com…]

Michigan resident Elias Abuelazam was identified today as the suspect in a series 20 vicious stabbings that included five deaths in three states, federal officials told ABC News.
Suspect is reportedly apprehended trying to leave the U.S.

Abuelazam, 33, was apprehended Wednesday night at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport as he was about to board a plane for Israel, officials said. He was tracked to the airport after investigators dashed to track down a new lead that originated in Michigan.

CNN is reporting that Abuelazam is an Israeli citizen who is in the United States on an expired visa.

It is not just the immorality of trivializing the constitution or the callous, self serving evil of it that offends. It is the fact that an elected representative who is supposed to value American values so blythely and unthinkingly throws out the core of our nation’s values with such a sneer, as if it were a little and obvious thing to do.

One of the victims, Richard Booker, 49, was recently released from a Flint hospital where he has been for the last three weeks after being stabbed. He told ABC News Wednesday that he has 68 staples throughout his back and belly and has slash wounds on his arms because he tried to prevent the man from “cutting off his face.”

“I’ve never hurt so much in my life, never come so close to death,” Booker told ABCNews. “I was about dead.”

Booker, who is white, dismisses the notion that the attacks are racially motivated.

“I’m obviously not black. The guy’s just a stone cold killer,” Booker said.

It’s their right to build there if they make it through NYC’s permit procedures, but the location is an insensitive, perhaps deliberately so choice. Consider that Islam has a history of converting or rebuilding on sites sacred to other faiths, i.e., Hagia Sophia, Dome of the Rock. They have on their agenda the desire to restrict the freedom of religion-mosques, freedom of choice-abortion and freedom to choose one’s mate-gay marriage. I’m probably missing more freedoms they plan to restrict if only they can get the power to do so, these just stand out at this moment. I wish someone would do an ad with one of those circles with the line across over the bill of rights to make the point that this is what they are up to. It is time they were called out on it. AP report:

The attacks began surfacing in late spring, and picked up the pace as the stabber traversed the country.

Police have said they usually follow a pattern: The suspect approaches black men late at night on lonely urban roads and asks for directions or help with a broken-down car. Then, without warning, he pulls out a knife and strikes. Then, he speeds away in his vehicle, leaving them for dead.

The brazen nature and the frequency of the attacks — the assailant has struck an average of about once every four days since the first stabbing in May — has terrified some of those in cities he’s already targeted.

The youngest victim was 17; the oldest was 60. They ranged in size from 5-foot-4 inches and 120 pounds to 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds.

You wonder how people can become so evil like that. I hope this murderer gets the needle in Virginia.

Cantor’s statement makes him sound like an uneducated teenager- “but come on!”- but to say “that his opposition to the Cordoba House violates American freedom of religion” is equally over the top. In America, people on all sides of a debate can to express their position whatever their station in life or however inarticulate or wrong their position might be. It is only when the government acts to block someone from practicing their faith or it supports one religion over another that freedom of religion is violated. Cantor ranting like high schooler violates nothing but one’s senses.

Of course, Charles as a private citizen is in a much different position. He owns this this blog, so he can allow or block whomever he pleases on it.

Saying a politician should lose his job for saying a despicable thing isn’t an attack on anyone’s freedom. It’s a demand for accountability. He is perfectly free to say whatever the hell he wants, and we are free to use the process to remove him from his job for doing so.

There is no irony here, save that of you complaining that criticism of one person’s speech by another person is somehow the same thing as censorship. It isn’t. It’s just more free speech. Eric Cantor has no constitutional right to be an idiot without losing his job as an elected representative.

It’s called “criticism,” and it has nothing to do with Cantor’s rights. Try harder next time.

On the other hand, when a leading politician says the Cordoba House shouldn’t be built, that’s far more serious than when a private citizen says it. As an elected official, Eric Cantor has a responsibility to uphold the Constitution, but his words make a mockery of it.

This is insane. If Muslims are not allowed to pray with two blocks of Ground Zero, should any Muslim be allowed to work in the future buildings at Ground Zero? Should any Muslim be allowed to eat in a restaurant that is within one block of Ground Zero? Some Republicans seem to be in love with the soundbite “Ground Zero Mosque”. It doesn’t matter that the mosque would be two blocks away. All that matters is that the soundbite is so awesome.

Eric Cantor is a vacuous empty suit.

re: #15 Obdicut

So how does he actually think the mosque should be stopped?

Mob violence? Eminent domain?

I think at this point, the plan may just be to get crazier and crazier, in the hopes that eventually the Mosque Building Committee will just give in out of exhaustion, and because it’s not worth going on. Then we can say we reached a ‘voluntary compromise’.

Or, if they continue, we can go on treating this as some kind of personal wrong done to the country for the duration.

To think, all this time we’ve been wasting our time making thoughtful arguments.

“I know the 2nd Amendment allows us to keep and bear arms, but come on!”

I think I said that once, but it wasn’t in a political context, I was trying to clear out the back room when my parents were moving.

re: #35 blueraven

It is quite ironic that all these people who claim to want to “take their country back”, actually want to destroy our Constitution and make us more like the countries and cultures they so despise.

I think when they say ‘back’, they mean, ‘back from elitist snobs like Monroe and his ilk’.

Oh, GREAT.

By that definition, there may be bars and strip clubs “at the site”already.

This is one raucous holy ground we got here.

Crap. Do you think things would have gone any different if we hadn’t just left the site gaping open for nearly ten years?

Don’t worry too much…they’ll see “Abuelazam” and assume he’s further proof that we shouldn’t build a mosque at ground zero.

His ex-mother-in-law is surprised. He seemed like such a nice person, as far as she knew.

I was implying they’d assume he was muslim…he does have a furrin’ soundin’ name, after all.

So does Binyamin Netanyahu, come to that.

re: #160 SanFranciscoZionist

Ex-MIL also says he’s Catholic.

I saw that he came from a Christian neighborhood. I know there were a couple of people worried that he’d get the whole Israel/Judaism taint going, but I think we live in a world right now where people put too much emphasis on a person’s faith as an indicator of their character. Christian, Jew, Muslim…it’s all irrelevant as far as I care.

re: #123 coscolo

This isn’t the first time there’s been a fuss over the location or size of a religious edifice. This one is making national news because of the location and the religion. The “power” may be in finding a place as close to Ground Zero as possible. I understand pieces of one of the buildings or planes wound up there.

OT: Perseid Meteor Shower tonight!

Tell me, what did the Crusaders do with the Dome of the Rock when they took Jerusalem?

Can you tell me the current name of the former Great Mosque of Cordoba?

Also, can you tell me if my Great-Aunt Cheike is allowed to have Muslim friends over to her apartment in Manhattan? It filled up with ash following 9/11, and I’m fairly sure that despite her excellent housekeeping, the whole building is probably still sacred ground.

They say that to hedge their position.

When they have to acknowledge that the project isn’t at ground zero, they can then move to the “shadow of ground zero” to cling to their bitter bigotry.

The term “homeland” when referring to the US always irked me. It’s just a little too close to “fatherland” for comfort, for me.
