Florida GOP Candidate McCollum: Ban Gays from Being Foster Parents

Politics • Views: 2,795

The Republican candidate for governor of Florida, Bill McCollum, not only supports Florida’s ban on gay adoption, he wants to go further; McCollum thinks gays should also be banned from being foster parents.

McCollum told a Florida Baptist publication that state law should be changed to keep gay people from fostering. He was quoted as saying: “I really do not think that we should have homosexuals guiding our children.”

UPDATE at 8/12/10 3:05:02 pm:

As Attorney General, McCollum personally requested that anti-gay quack psychologist George “Rent Boy” Rekers be hired as an expert witness in one of the trials defending the ban on gay adoption — for which Rekers was paid over $120,000 at a rate of $300 an hour: State doubled fee paid to anti-gay psychologist in Rentboy scandal.

Anti-gay psychologist George Rekers charged Florida $300 an hour to testify as an expert witness in a trial defending Florida’s ban on gay people adopting. The state planned to cap Rekers’ fee at $60,900 — but paid him $120,693 after he exceeded his contracted hours.

“It is not unusual for estimated costs to require adjustment during the course of trial preparation,” said Sandi Copes, communications director for the Florida Attorney General’s Office. Copes said the extra hours were not agreed to in writing, but “merely by discussion.”

“A total of 402.31 hours was submitted for payment by invoice attached. Of the 402.31 hours, 203 was paid by Direct Order,” according to a 2009 state settlement agreement. ‘‘We accept responsibility for not obtaining a written document for the 199.31 remaining hours. However, the monies are legally due.”

Attorney General Bill McCollum personally requested that the state’s Department of Children & Families hire Rekers, whose national reputation shattered last week after he vacationed for two weeks in Europe with a gay male escort from Miami he met through rentboy.com. The escort, Jo-Vanni Roman, 20, says he gave Rekers, 61, nude “sexual” massages every day during their trip in April to Madrid and London.

As I said last thread (repost):

There simply is no moral basis to the argument that gays should not be allowed to adopt. There are many orphaned children in this country, and many more in the world.

Unless one is prepared to make the argument that children are better off with no parents at all than they would be with adoptive gay parents, that argument falls flat as well.

Opposition to this not only has no moral basis, it is in itself an immoral position to take. There aren’t enough people who want to raise all the children that are out there. ANYBODY who is willing to do the job should be given a chance.

You realize you’re talking about the LESS conservative candidate in this race. The one the other candidate is calling a “liberal”. McCollum’s position on gay adoption and gay foster parenting is to the left of center of today’s GOP (at least here in the South).

Will Rekers escort scandal sink McCollum’s gubernatorial bid?

According to the Miami Herald, McCollum specifically requested the services of Rekers:

Attorney General Bill McCollum personally requested that the state’s Department of Children & Families hire antigay psychologist George Rekers at $300 an hour as an expert witness to defend Florida’s ban on gay people adopting, records show.

“Our attorneys handling this case have searched long and hard for other expert witnesses with comparable expertise to Dr. Rekers and have been unable to identify any who would be available for this case,” McCollum wrote in 2007 to then-DCF Secretary Bob Butterworth.

… Florida paid Rekers $60,900 in 2007 and $59,793 in 2009 for his testimony in the case of Frank Gill, a gay foster parent seeking to adopt two young brothers. Florida is the only state that bans all gay people from adopting.

When the scandal broke, the attorney general’s office issued a statement:

As hired counsel for the Florida Department of Children and Families, our office is committed to providing our client with the best possible legal representation in this matter. Dr. Rekers, a professor emeritus from University of South Carolina and a neuropsychologist with a degree from UCLA, came to our attention by recommendation from another academic after an exhaustive search for potential expert witnesses who were willing to testify. Dr. Rekers had exceptional credentials and he had provided testimony in similar cases on two separate occasions, one of which was a Florida case in Federal Court. The contract was executed at the direction of the Department of Children and Families, and the ACLU did not object to his position as an expert at the hearing. He has completed his testimony and is no longer involved in this case

Also, Sandi Copes, communications director for the attorney general’s office, said the attorney general’s office will not engage or recommend Dr. Rekers in the future.

OT a little. This reminds me of something an anti-tunnel activist actually said back in the 80s when the Channel Tunnel was still under construction. The man had expressed alarm over the ease with which the “Chunnel” would allow the French to travel to England. A reporter asked him if he was anti-French.
He said, (paraphrased but close), “Oh, by no means. We greatly admire French food, French style, French architecture, and French culture. It’s just the goddamned French people we can’t stand.”

Bill McCollum Hired George Rekers Despite Strong Warnings From Staff

Emails uncovered by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s Gary Fineout show that McCollum personally pushed to hire Rekers even after several warnings not to.

Assistant Attorney General Valerie Martin wrote in a July 2007 e-mail that after talking to Arkansas officials and reviewing the background of the former University of South Carolina professor that she would “recommend NOT using him.”

E-mails also show that during a conference call Martin — who said the state considered more than 30 possible expert witnesses — was ordered to hire Rekers “against my strong cautions.”
Rekers had previously represented the state of Arkansas in a similar case.

Martin’s worries about Rekers appear to stem from his flimsy use of science in denying rights to homosexuals, and not from any rumors about his personal life.

“There were discussions and there were differences of opinion among our attorneys over the hiring of this expert witness. There was a decision made ultimately by me,” McCollum told the Herald-Tribune.

While McCollum’s office defends Reker’s six-figure fee, his testimony was completely ignored by Miami-Dade Judge Cindy Lederman in the case where a gay man was trying to officially adopt two boys he had cared for for years despite Florida’s ban on adoption by homosexuals.

“Dr. Rekers’ testimony was far from a neutral and unbiased recitation of the relevant scientific evidence. Dr. Rekers’ beliefs are motivated by his strong ideological and theological convictions that are not consistent with the science. Based on his testimony and demeanor at trial, the court can not consider his testimony to be credible nor worthy of forming the basis of public policy,” Lederman wrote in her November 2008 decision.

Ultimately she deemed the ban unconstitutional. Appeals are still working their way through the court system, and may eventually hit the state supreme court.

My father once had a teaching job at a Christian college. They made him sign a rather remarkable document in which he not only promised not to have gay sex (not a difficult one for my dad), he also had to promise not to practice witchcraft.

Now, my dad had gotten into his mid-twenties at this point without ever having been tempted to practice witchcraft, but once they told him he couldn’t…well.

There should be one standard and one only: what is best for the child.

Turning now to the elephant in the room, gay marriage, here’s some of what John Woo had to say in today’s Wall Street Journal. Woo supports gay marriage, he writes, as a policy matter. He trusts that the American people will come around on the topic. But as to winning in the courts, here’s his take:

Judge Walker did more than distort settled precedent and sweep aside centuries of practice. He short-circuited the Constitution’s democratic process for the resolution of moral disagreements.

A single judge, he elevated himself above the collective wisdom of millions of California voters and the considered judgment of state and federal officials. We all fondly hope that our government acts only to improve the welfare of society. But Judge Walker believes this job is best done not by elected legislators or executives, but by a single judge armed only with social science studies.

Judge Walker denied that Prop 8’s ban on gay marriage was rationally related to its goals of promoting more marriage and less divorce, as well as procreation and social stability. “Permitting same-sex couples to marry will not affect the number of opposite-sex couples who marry, divorce, cohabit, have children outside of marriage or otherwise affect the stability of opposite-sex marriages,” Judge Walker ruled. Prop 8, therefore, only represented irrational contempt against gays by the people of California.

Anyone who lives in this bluest of blue states might be forgiven for laughing out loud at the charge of bigotry. Does the charge apply also to Mr. Obama and Hillary Clinton, who both opposed gay marriage during the 2008 campaign?

Woo goes on to observe that the grounds on which this and similar cases have been argued apply equally well to questions of prostitution, polygamy and pornography, or age limits on marriage and sex.

All laws based on morality would be unconstitutional.

He continues with the observation that in a federal system, new ideas can be tested and experience gained. Human reason is not the only way to size up an idea. One can also try it out and see how it goes.

Woo closes with this:

Prematurely nationalizing gay marriage—-either by banning it through constitutional amendment or allowing it by judicial fiat—-only promises a replay of the abortion drama.

Negative ads help push Bill McCollum ahead of Rick Scott, poll shows

Bill McCollum’s nonstop attacks on Republican rival Rick Scott’s integrity and business record have put him in the lead for the first time, a new poll shows.

McCollum is ahead of Scott by a 34-30 percent margin — a huge shift from just a week ago, when Scott led 37-31, according to the latest survey from Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

Pollster Brad Coker said both candidates’ reputations are taking a hit as they sling tens of millions of dollars’ worth of negative ads against each other heading into the Aug. 24 primary election.

“Democratic candidate Alex Sink is the clear winner from all of this,” said Coker.

Sink, who has trailed in the Mason-Dixon polls since May, now leads McCollum by a 37-35 margin. That’s well within the general election error margin of the poll.

A little story from my Prop 8 files.

A woman my family has known through Jewish activist circles for years is married to a woman, and they have two small daughters together.

As the Prop 8 vote drew closer, the older child, who was about seven at the time, pulled her mom aside and said she had a question. If Prop 8 passed, who would she and her sister live with most of the time?

As far as a second-grader knows, if your parents aren’t married anymore, it’s because they got a divorce, and divorced people don’t live together. Kid had been worrying about this for weeks.

Totally OT:

Last summer, my father was very ill, and in the hospital for some time. During part of this time he was hallucinating his ass off, or just extremely out of it.

It was only several months after he had gotten out of the hospital, when we were discussing some of what had happened, that he learned he had been attended by two Drs. Lee.

Dr. Grace Lee, and Dr. Caroline Lee. They were both Dr. Lee, and they were both about the same height and weight, Chinese-American, local accent, hair in ponytails.

He’d simply conflated them into one person, and if they seemed to change a little between sessions, hell, he was into thinking that he’d been captured by the KGB at one point, so Dr. Lee’s face changing around wasn’t that weird.

He was sort of suspicious when we claimed there were two Dr. Lees.

Am I the only one who has noticed this? Why is it that “family values” advocates who believe gays shouldn’t be allowed to adopt children, often have a tendency towards pedophilia/pederasty (“Rent Boy” Rekers, among others). Without a strong family structure, children are more vulnerable (duh). High numbers of parentless and homeless children are like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the pedophile. < shudder >

Hariri: Look into Israeli involvement in my dad’s death

Lebanese newspaper as-Safir reports Lebanese prime minister prepared to adopt Hezbollah claims of Israeli responsibility for assassination of former premier

Hariri also said that Nasrallah expressed an opinion held by many Lebanese and presented information and documentation that cannot be ignored. “I, personally, support their examination. It is important for me to know the truth, both as the prime minister and as the son of the slain,” said Hariri, according to the report.

The Lebanese prime minister added that should Israel decline to summon for investigation the witnesses likely to appear in Nasrallah’s “proof,” the Jewish State will be considered in his eyes as guilty, and not merely suspect. The newspaper also noted in its report that the prosecutor in the Hariri tribunal received the material Nasrallah presented in his latest speech.

Low Oxygen Levels Killed 10,000 Fish Off Jersey Shore

On Monday, residents on an island close to Fairhaven, Mass., were struck with a terrible odor: thousands of dead fish on the shores of their beach. Two days later and 200 miles away, beachgoers on the Jersey Shore stumbled across an even worse sight: Tens of thousands of dead menhaden fish splayed ashore for more than eight miles along the Delaware Bay, with tons still floating in the lapping waves.

When the state DEP began investigating the cause, experts said one reason the sensitive species died is “warm waters that have depleted the oxygen,” a marine fisheries employee told KSAT.

New Jersey’s Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring observed water samples taken Wednesday and concluded there were no signs of toxic phytoplankton species, such as red tide. After inspecting the remains, marine fisheries said the fish have been deceased for at least a few days before washing on and around the shore.

According to Eric Stiles, New Jersey Audubon vice president for conservation and stewardship, the menhaden are a “critical fish” for the area’s ecology, and the fact that so many died is “highly significant.”

re: #54 Kruk

Sigh. Yes, Dr Laura, African-Americans have the ‘privilege’ of using the N-word freely than whites do. Let’s have a look at a few of the things whites have more freedom to do than blacks do, shall we?

-Drive an expensive car without getting pulled over for DWB
-Get called “promising” of “full of potential” when you get a plum job or promotion you may be young or inexperienced for rather than a “token” or “affirmitive action” candidate.
-Voice your opinion about things that are wrong in the country without being called “militant” or “thug”.
-Get to succeed without having to be “a credit to your race”.
-Get to fail without being an indictment of your culture.
-Get to define yourself as the norm rather than “the other”.
-Not have to work twice has hard to be considered as good as your colleagues.

And that’s just the things I’m listing off the top of my head. The “Oh, woe betide us poor oppressed whites” theme really irritates me.

being called “eloquent” or “well-spoken” as a backhanded way of saying “thank Gawd you don’t talk like one o’them rapperz”…

Prematurely nationalizing gay marriage—-either by banning it through constitutional amendment or allowing it by judicial fiat—-only promises a replay of the abortion drama.

I can’t emphasize enough how incredibly weak this kind of argument is. The “just be more patient” approach to civil rights is bullshit, and Yoo knows is.

Another quote from the steaming pile of sophistry:

The Constitution does not set up the federal courts as a roving commission of do-gooders to correct all of the nation’s problems. The courts, populated by a small number of older lawyers deliberately isolated from the people and inexpert in any field, are likely to cause more social diseases than they cure.

No, Mr. Yoo, the courts exist to enforce the constitution, as well as the law, and to negotiate any conflicts between the two, always ion favor of the constitution, including the equal-protection clause of the 14th amendment.

I expect little more from the man who tried to justify the application of torture by similarly torturing the language of the law. Yoo is a fucking disgrace to the legal profession.

People tend to think other people are a lot like they are. I don’t spend much time thinking about the dangers of gambling because I don’t enjoy gambling.
When my kids were young I did give some thought to keeping them safe because I know there are dangers out there, but they were allowed to do a certain amount of neighborhood roaming because there are also dangers in wrapping your kids in cotton and never letting them out. A pedophile would be far more likely to think that large numbers of people out there are after their kids, because they feel a strong temptation in that direction

Arkansas has a voter initiated law that “made it illegal for any individuals cohabiting outside of a valid marriage to adopt or provide foster care to minors. While the measure was proposed primarily to prohibit same-sex couples from being adoptive or foster parents, the ban also applied to all otherwise qualified couples who are not legally married.”

“On Friday, April 16, Pulaski County Circuit Court Judge Chris Piazz determined that the ban infringes on the right of privacy, and overturned it. The Arkansas Attorney General has not yet decided whether or not to appeal the decision, but Jerry Cox*, president of the Arkansas Family Council, stated that the group would petition the Arkansas Supreme Court.”

You realize you’re talking about the LESS conservative candidate in this race. The one the other candidate is calling a “liberal”. McCollum’s position on gay adoption and gay foster parenting is to the left of center of today’s GOP (at least here in the South).

This needs to be repeated. Of the two GOP candidates for FL Governor, McCollum is the more moderate vote. His opponent in the primary, Rick Scott, is as wingnut as they come and has no right to be anywhere near the governor’s seat. Here’s a breakout of the race that I did earlier this week:

I’ve been vaping an electric cig since Sunday morning and haven’t had a real one since. I’m actually enjoying it more than I ever did the real thing.

Mom’s good. She has a bit of a stomach virus right now, but other than that she’s in good spirits, and the rehabilitation has been going well. Thanks for asking! :)

I got a model called the Joye 510. It’s an older style, but comes very highly recommended. Only real issue is that the battery life sucks ass. Answer: Yes, I do. I believe that children should be adopted by a man and a wife.

Not every married couple that wants to adopt is a promising choice. The supply is thin, the need is great.

This sort of decision has to be made on a case by case basis, and keeping in mind that the {best interests of the child} must be the only standard by which candidates are judged.

There have to be some gay couples, and some singles, who when everything is factored in, rate as a better choice for the child than foster care or an orphanage, and better than any other candidate parent(s) who aren’t already “taken”.

OT: Just had a disturbing conversation with a co-worker of mine.

He’s European, has lived here for 20+ years, and is a very sweet-natured and cheerful guy, albiet somewhat conserative socially. We were sharing 9/11 stories (since we were both in the city at the time) and were just wrapping up our conversation when he mentioned the “murderers and the mosque”. Turns out he’s dead-set against the Cordoba House and any Mosque built. To him, all Muslims are murders. No facts I could do could bring sanity to him.

Needless to say, this makes me deeply unhappy. He’s not an idiot, yet emotion and rage have got a hold of him; scary to see in a guy who never gets angry. He’s not alone in my office with these feelings, I now suspect.

All I can say, my dear Lizards, is that it’s going to be a long road ahead for our country (and world) to overcome this.

PS. Wonder how he’ll react when he finds out my wife is Muslim….

I don’t support specifically barring a gay man or woman from adopting children or being a foster parent. Besides, how is the state to determine who is sufficiently gay to be considered “gay”? My understanding of how the Florida courts have interpreted the one law in the country that does this is that anyone who regularly participates in homosexual activities is “gay.” What about bisexuals? What about a married man who sometimes hooks up with guys? Not only can this not be justified, but it is too vague.

You should have mentioned it. It’s one of my favorite gimmicks I stole from a friend in college. If someone is on a racist/antisemitic rant let them go with it. Maybe even egg them on a little bit. Then mention that you’re mom is jewish or you’ve adopted a black child (just make something up to fit the situation) and watch them try to backpeddle out of the rant. It’s hilarious.

One thing I take comfort in, amidst all the bigotry and racism and homophobia now spreading their smelly, decayed bat-wings over the constitution and the people of this country, is that people like Rekers and Gingrich keep on outing themselves as flagrant liars and hypocrites and practitioners of the very things they claim to abhor.

And they, personally, will never, ever live that down.

He’s not alone in my office with these feelings, I now suspect.

re: #54 Kruk

How’s that work for admission to an elite University?

To have the same chances of gaining admission as a black student with an SAT score of 1100, an Hispanic student otherwise equally matched in background characteristics would have to have a 1230, a white student a 1410, and an Asian student a 1550.

I have to agree. Its impossible to argue that children are better off in a group home or foster care than in a gay household.

re: #40 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Sorry that I didn’t see this earlier, because it’s important to me as a Florida resident.

Rick Scott is a crook and has no business running a state. From the Miami Herald.

However, federal investigators found that Scott took part in business practices at Columbia/HCA that were later found to be illegal -- specifically, that Scott and other executives offered financial incentives to doctors in exchange for patient referrals, in violation of federal law, according to lawsuits the Justice Department filed against the company in 2001.

The doctor payments were among 10 different kinds of fraud identified by the Justice Department in its 10-year probe of the company, records show. Three years after Scott left Columbia/HCA, the company admitted wrongdoing, pleading guilty to 14 felonies — most committed during Scott’s tenure — in addition to paying two sets of fines totaling $1.7 billion.

Scott declined interview requests from The Miami Herald, and though his campaign issued a statement, it did not respond to specific questions about his tenure at Columbia/HCA.

I’m a liberal. I would never vote for either McCollum or Scott, but Scott is the worse choice for Florida. I’m begging my Republican friends to vote for McCollum.

Besides, Scott’s views are no different on gay adoption.

Gay adoption? He opposes it “because a child should be raised by a man and a woman, a husband and wife.” But how about same-sex couples who are foster parents in good standing with the Department of Children & Families and want to adopt? Nope, Scott says, not even then.

Mike Putney is one of Florida’s finest journalists. He’s interviewed Scott at least twice that I’m aware, with a sit-down interview just last Sunday on his weekly show.

Let McCollum get the Republican nod and vote for Crist at election time.

this has got to be a pretty old research. top score on the sat is now 2400. none of these scores will get someone into an elite university.

Study had access to data about students who applied in 1997. But there is no particular reason to think things have changed much.

For that matter, even when the top score was 1600, the SAT governing body changed its scoring system, which means that scores from the 1990s are higher at the same level of actual performance than scores from the 1960s. I don’t know exactly when they made the change.

Elite private schools apply windage to legacy students and to students with rich parents, as well as race-based windage. That’s in the link too if you read it.

They down-ding applications that come with evidence of leadership or extracurricular activities that reek of red-state. For instance, if you won a 4H championship, omit it from your application because it will hurt your chances. If you’re white, but not otherwise, omit all mention of socioeconomic disadvantage. If you’re Asian, don’t mention it at all and hope your name doesn’t spill the beans, and don’t provide a photograph. Conversely, if you’re not Asian but you have a name like Lee, say, be sure sure sure to include a photo. That’s just how the game seems to work.

it is that…tomorrow they chop my leg off, my favorite leg

When someone asks you how you feel, tell them, “I can’t kick”.

Seriously, just follow the doctors’ orders, obey the nurses without question, and take care of yourself.

re: #227 Killgore Trout

You should have mentioned it. It’s one of my favorite gimmicks I stole from a friend in college. If someone is on a racist/antisemitic rant let them go with it. Maybe even egg them on a little bit. Then mention that you’re mom is jewish or you’ve adopted a black child (just make something up to fit the situation) and watch them try to backpeddle out of the rant. It’s hilarious.

Years ago, as one of the very few Jews at a Catholic university, I had all kinds of fun with faculty, administrators, and many of my fellow students in just that way. Get ‘em all wound up, let them fly, then let ‘em crash and burn.

It didn’t make up for all the shit I had to endure (this wasn’t that long after Vatican II, and old prejudices and teachings die hard), but it was the occasional bit of payback.
