Glenn Beck: Obama is ‘A Christian That Christians Don’t Recognize’

Wingnuts • Views: 3,889

On his radio show this morning, Glenn Beck made excuses for the Birther movement by saying that Barack Obama is “a Christian that Christians don’t recognize,” and therefore it’s perfectly understandable that they would think he’s a Muslim.

Beck, of course, is a converted Mormon who promotes Christian supremacism with the help of outright theocrats and historical revisionists, like David Barton.

Rush was on this kick this morning as well. They're going apeshit over the latest poll.

New Poll: 1 in 5 Americans See Obama as 'Muslim'

A new public opinion poll shows 18 percent of Americans wrongly believe President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

The number of Americans with that mistaken idea has risen in the past year, although President Obama is a practicing Christian and has made many public statements about his faith.

The poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center indicated that only 34 percent of people know the president is Christian. A larger number – 43 percent – say they are not certain what religion Obama practices.

Isn't there a general problem with Christians not 'recognizing' each other? Catholics aren't considered Christian by a large number of Protestant denominations.

However, nobody thinks they're Muslims.

Gee, wonder what it is about Obama that makes racist assholes think he's a Muslim?

Actually, as a democrat, while I could enjoy the stupidity of it all I find it utterly disgusting. I was raised to love this country and believe that America and our people were, despite our many faults, good people. The past decade has obliterated that belief. This is the dark underbelly of this country and is not who or what we should be.

Upbringing primarily, and then social groups once one has fled/been tossed out of the nest.

Of course, there is also a school of thought that one decides what sort of social support group one is look for and then selects a religion that fits the desired criteria.

DND Online was good that way, as it was all quest based as opposed to having to grind your way to success.

59 Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All  Thu, Aug 19, 2010 10:38:29am

We're banging the drums of reason, but no one is listening.

The Economy is wretched, but the majority of people don't understand how much worse it could get.

Instead people are too busy looking at, is Obama Christian? is he a secret Muslim, or some other diversion. with the media promoting each random stupidity with this faux 'balanced' coverage, "Is Obama a space alien, we'll have two speakers, one who says yes, one who says no, and we'll let them yell at each other."

The media has abdicated their responsibility to report news, and now simply entertain. But the general population hasn't caught up to that fact yet. So instead we have a bunch of programs that claim to be 'news' but instead indoctrinate and enable the conspiracy theorists. We give weight and credence to the people that yell the loudest and the most.

We as America have also failed because we're not being the best people we can be. Instead too many of us are giving into our base instincts and impulses, our xenophobia and our fear are controlling us.

And I'm not sure we have an easy answer, except to keep banging the drums of reason, and hope that people are able to hear the call.

Marriage anyone?

I’ve completed my ordainment, and can now legally officiate a marriage that will be recognized in all fifty states. As you might expect, it was a long and arduous task involving years of study, strict spiritual discipline, studious reflection on the nature of man, and hopping across a series of crumbling pillars without spilling a glass of water to retrieve the precious Ajanti Dagger.

This is how religion works.

Oh wait, no it wasn’t. I went here, filled out some basic information and verified an email address. For those of you that didn’t visit that link, here’s a picture of the form.

There are no pages after that – that’s the entire thing. You get a verification email and click the link, and you’re done. Many states, including the one I live in, require no registration with the government whatsoever. Unfortunately, not all states are so trusting; some do screen the process. If so, they might require a Letter of Good Standing from your church, and then you’re pretty much screwed: That thing costs ten whole dollars. You can order it from the site. But most of you won’t have to do another damn thing. There are no quizzes, no ethical or moral questions – no qualifications, period. They don’t even ask if you have a criminal record. You could have spent the last decade serial raping baby panda bears in front of fourth grade classes on zoo field trips, and you can still become an ordained minister in most states

That's different. NO ONE thinks Rush is a Muslim.

I have 1 Muslim acquaintance. I wish I knew more. This one fellow is an office friend.

Initially I thought he was Hispanic. He's very good looking, dark and spoke fluent Spanish. He went to college in Caracas so I asked him if he was Venezuelan. He said, no he was Lebanese. He didn't say anything else and I guess I just assumed Christian.

So one day we're sitting chatting and he says his sister saw Passion of the Christ and it really freaked her out. When there was a pause in the conversation, I kind of looked at him and I figured, what the hell, I'm just going to ask. I said, "Are you Christian?" He said, "No, I'm Muslim." I said, "Oh!" and he just stared at me. Weird silence. I said, "Well I'm Jewish!" He stared directly at my necklace (my Star) and said, "Uh, Yea, I know!" And we both laughed. That was the extent of our religious conversation.

I saw him today at the food stand and wished him a happy Ramadan (I don't know if that's the way to say it). We kissed (air cheek-to-cheek). He grabbed an empanada (meat pastry) and said, "I don't think this is kosher." And we laughed LOL I said it didn't have any cheese. "But the meat??" said he. I said, "Eat and enjoy your empanada."

I like him very much.

Me and the Daily Camera rarely agree about much of anything, but their editorial today just about sums up my feelings, and probably the feelings of the majority of people right now. The fact that we aren't being heard is being utterly ignored by those who are certain that they know better.

The summer of our discontent

It's not directly on-topic, but it says what needs to be said. The wheels have all fallen off the cart, and the cart's in the ditch, on fire.

It freaked me out in its antisemitism.

And lots of people assured me it wasn't really antisemitic.

And then came the drunken antisemitic ramblings of Gibson.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was really antisemitic.

Pete Stark (D-CA) is the only self-proclaimed athiest in congress, as far as I know. And I believe we have two members of congress (both Democrats) who are muslim. Everyone else, all 432 of them, claim either some flavor of Christianity or Judaism. In the Senate, that's 100 per cent.

There's nothing like diversity in a nations body politik - and thats nothing like diversity in a nations body politik.

Why did the Passion freak her out? A good way or bad way?

Just curious.

I think it was the bloodiness. Apparently she ran screaming from her apartment to his apartment. I thought that was a little extreme myself, but I didn't see it.

I did that through the Universal Life Church on Jan 25th 2000. Still haven't been asked to marry anyone yet.

I'd have to do some research, but I think that a significant number of those congressmen are listed as "non-denominational", which in many instances translates to "non-practicing". Also, please don't limit your scope to just the US congress - there's a lot of other state and local-level elected officials too, you know.

The rambling incoherent response dialog?

185 Nick Schroeder  Thu, Aug 19, 2010 11:13:56am

Well, I'll be honest, I kind of have outrage fatigue at this point.

Now, as an atheist, I'm just left feeling jealous and starved for attention. The tears and tooth-gnashing of the lunatic brigade give me strength, and I had gotten used to a steady diet of at least a couple 'you're ruining America's a week. Now, the Muslims are getting all of my sweet DERP nectar.

I guess I have no choice but to open an Atheism Cultural Center right across the street from the XXXTREME ULTIMATE FREEDOM TOWER OF JESUS construction site if I ever hope to again receive the blissful sustenance of bigoted dominionist tears.

Marriage anyone?

Sorry I missed this LOL

Back in the 80's, my g/f sent away for her Minister's license - $5. Basically just to see if she could. She got a very nice official looking certificate. We talked a lot about starting our own religion. She always wanted a job she could do from the house.

It was the little weird creatures around Peter that freaked me out. I didn't see the antisemitism since Jesus and the Apostles are Jews and one movie will NOT dissuade me from my support for Israel so I wasn't looking for it. I don't know if I can watch it again.

What you need is a big Cross with a red line through it. Oh and a Jewish Star and a Crescent Moon, both with red lines through them. That outa do it pretty good.

From what I've heard of it, it's pretty much 2 hours of torture pr0n that would have me running out screaming myself.

GOP: Why can't the Greek church at Ground Zero be rebuilt?

Reality: Church Destroyed On 9/11 Finding Resurrection Difficult

Oh brother. Anyway there's a video up with Doocy and company interviewing a Francoise from the Greek Orthodox Church of America. He at least says that it's not comparable to Cordoba House and then says "there is no Mosque at Ground Zero." But he goes on to say something about "the irony is not lost on the American people." I'm not sure if he's really directly associated with Saint Nicholas Church.

The video:

Get a load of the graphic on the lower right which shows a flashing super-imposed crescent and star over a crucifix.

If they want to get the church rebuilt they're going to have to raise the cash.

There's also a lot of stuff about how when powerful Jews don't like you they go to any ends to destroy you. You know, good uplifting stuff like that.

Yep. The United States is extremely hostile to atheism, at least as far as our political preferences go.

You need to live in the South for a few years

I have- and it is a much more diverse place than the West or the Midwest. Perhaps its not the geography but the kind of people you hang out with?
