AP Tells Staff to Stop Using ‘Ground Zero Mosque’

Media • Views: 4,397

Most of the media have uncritically adopted the term “Ground Zero Mosque,” a dishonest, inflammatory phrase coined by bigots. It’s a disgrace.

Today the Associated Press finally issued a directive telling staff to stop enabling the Bigot Brigade. (Not in so many words, of course.)

The Associated Press, one of world’s most powerful news organizations, issued a memo today advising staff to avoid the phrase “Ground Zero mosque.”

The Upshot reported Tuesday that the AP started using the phrase “Ground Zero mosque” in some headlines in late May. Other news organizations, such as the New York Times, have avoided that phrasing. …

The AP has always been clear in the text of stories that the project would be built two blocks from Ground Zero and not on the actual site. But AP headlines, at times, ran with the phrase adopted by opponents of the project and amplified by the media. Now the news organization is taking steps to make sure that no longer occurs.

“We should continue to avoid the phrase’ground zero mosque’ or’mosque at ground zero’ on all platforms, said Tom Kent, the AP’s deputy managing editor for standards and production, in the memo the news organization shared with The Upshot. …

“The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero, but two blocks away in a busy commercial area,” Kent continued. “We should continue to say it’s ‘near’ ground zero, or two blocks away.”

We should continue to say it’s ‘near’ ground zero, or two blocks away

Just say it's two blocks away and be done with it.

A little common sense from the AP (which hasn't shown much of it sometimes), but, at this point, it's like closing the barn door after the horse got out.

The right-wing wingnuts will still use that vapid phrase every time they have the chance...

Too little too late. The damage was already done quite some time ago.

That means we'll see shit like "The Park51 community center, which its detractors like to refer to as "The Ground Zero Mosque," continues to be the center of the controversy about whether it is appropriate for a mosque to be built so close to the site of the September 11 attacks..."

You want the moon on a stick you do.

What's the old saying? Aim for the moon, cause even if you miss, you'll still reach the stars. (or something like that)

The more we express our higher standards and are vocal about the expectations, the better the chance that someone will actually listen to us. I've given up on the idea that people will do the right thing, particularly in the media. Instead, we have to remind them that they have a responsibility and obligation to report and inform, not promote lies and disinformation. I don't expect perfection, but I do expect better than what we've gotten from them up to this point.

Yes, I'm an idealist. :)

'Ground Zero' Imam: I am a Jew, I have always been one.

In 2003, Imam Rauf was invited to speak at a memorial service for Daniel Pearl, the journalist murdered by Islamist terrorists in Pakistan. The service was held at B'nai Jeshurun, a prominent synagogue in Manhattan, and in the audience was Judea Pearl, Daniel Pearl's father. In his remarks, Rauf identified absolutely with Pearl, and identified himself absolutely with the ethical tradition of Judaism. "I am a Jew," he said.

There are those who would argue that these represent mere words, chosen carefully to appease a postentially suspicious audience. I would argue something different: That any Muslim imam who stands before a Jewish congregation and says, "I am a Jew," is placing his life in danger. Remember, Islamists hate the people they consider apostates even more than they hate Christians and Jews. In other words, the man many commentators on the right assert is a terrorist-sympathizer placed himself in mortal peril in order to identify himself with Christians and Jews, and specifically with the most famous Jewish victim of Islamism.

re: #10 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Whoa. Howabout this?

It's part of the larger rise of Fascism in Europe, but yeah, the Gypsies-- known also as the Roma-- have been the most persecuted group in Europe for years and years and years.

My wife is part Roma.

Those repatriated Thursday left "on a voluntary basis" and were given small sums of money — euro300 ($386) for each adult and euro100 for children — to help them get back on their feet in their home country, a standard French practice, officials said.

This is a lie, of course.

In Italy, the camps of the Roma are being burned, murders of Roma are going unprosecuted. And in Romania, their children are still taken away for 're-education'.

There is no end to the persecution of the Roma. And most of Europe remains silent on it.

And the defense, of course, is that the Roma (who have suffered centuries of slavery, serfdom, imprisonment, ostracism, and mass-murder) have a lot of criminals in their population. Which is true-- because they've been economically and socially ostracized and ghettoized for years. Not to mentio having their children stolen, being forced to get abortions, and being forcibly sterilized.

It's a fucking crime against humanity.

No, it's really not good. They're pressured into taking the money and leaving even when they have possessions worth far more that they have to leave behind. Furthermore, they attempt to interdict them before they return, and they hope that by dispersing the camps, and breaking up families, they can prevent the Roma from coming back.

No, he really didn't.

So has any significant public figure come out and said Park 51 is "ok"

Mayor Bloomberg has. No other major NY pol has said a thing. I expected that from Schumer, but not Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. I am a bit unhappy with her silence here.

No. He gave exactly the only support the project should need: The building of it is constitutionally protected.

He did not 'refudiate' that.

re: #96 PapaWhisky

Obama never said he was "ok" with it, only that it was their right to construct it, and that he would not comment on the "wisdom" of doing so. Which is exactly what he should have said.

you're right .. Bloomberg did.

And ... yes .. Obama un-re-clarified. It was too messy for words

Not really.

He supported their public right to use their own property, but refused to speculate on the private affair of "wisdom". I think he was correct to do so.

Not a current pol, but Ed Koch had a great statement:

Right to Construct but no comment on the wisdom. With the wisdom comment coming a day later in a parking lot.

Additional AP note: we will however continue our policy of falling for these right-wing nontroversies every additional time they crop up though. We have no plans to learn from our continued mistakes, do any research on any of these "stories" before we pass them on, or figure out that these turn out to be partisan hack created reality ignoring bullshit EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!!

He took a stand and stuck to it. The stand is that we have religious freedom in this country, and they have the right to build the mosque there.

None of the rest of it is anybody else's business, including him.

You wish to interpret his initial statement as support, no matter how tepid, you're free to do so. I'm free, likewise, I call you a dumbass for doing so.

It is amazing how well tuned the Right Wing Outrage Wurlitzer seems to be, and how Breitbart, Drudge and the various merry pranksters can keep doing this shit. There is nothing even remotely analogous on the left.

So, I should now refer to Christians who believe in Biblical literalism and inerrancy as 'racial Christians'? Fails to make sense.

Actually, the term "Ground Zero Mosque" was coined by the backers of the mosque. And not everyone who thinks it is a bad idea to build the mosque on that site is a bigot. Someone as smart as the old Charles Johnson would have had enough balance to recognize the difference between a Geller and a Harry Reid, There are lots of analogies that actually make sense and are not derived from bigotry, but decency to victims of memorials: [Link: strata-sphere.com...]

This is absolutely NOT true.

And not everyone who thinks it is a bad idea to build the mosque on that site is a bigot.

At this point, there are two possible reasons for being opposed to the community center.

1) Bigotry.

2) Ignorance.

And if anyone is still ignorant of the facts, it's because they can't be bothered to inform themselves. Which is damned close to bigotry.
