Franklin Graham: Obama Has the ‘Seed of Islam’

Wingnuts • Views: 5,104

Fundamentalist wacko Franklin Graham says President Obama is infected with the seed of Islam.

“I think the president’s problem is that he was born a Muslim, his father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father like the seed of Judaism is passed through the mother. He was born a Muslim, his father gave him an Islamic name,” Graham told CNN’s John King in a televised interview that aired Thursday night.

“Now it’s obvious that the president has renounced the prophet Mohammed, and he has renounced Islam, and he has accepted Jesus Christ. That’s what he says he has done. I cannot say that he hasn’t. So I just have to believe that the president is what he has said,” Graham continued, adding that “the Islamic world sees the president as one of theirs.”

More hits from Franklin Graham

“Is America Islamophobic?” Frank Graham reportedly said that Islam “is a religion of hatred. It’s a religion of war.” Building the cultural center near Ground Zero, he says, means Muslims “will claim now that the World Trade Center property … is Islamic land.”

What kind of idiot rube buys this?

6 elizajane  Fri, Aug 20, 2010 3:43:21pm

The *seed* of Islam, and it’s like Judaism? Does this guy know the difference between race and religion, does he get the concept of faiths of conversion?

Maybe he should have a chat with the fellow I was reading today who assured his audience that in order to become a Muslim, all you have to do is say three times “I am a Muslim.” And shazam! The seed comes down, I suppose.

The amount of misinformation floating around out there is phenomenal. But then, 20% of Americans believe in reincarnation, and I’ll bet that most of them would call themselves Christians and see no contradiction.

What about this article from the NY Times?

[Link: www.nytimes.com…]

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.

Of course, as most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written convincingly to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him.

His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim’s family may choose to forgive).

News Corp’s number-two shareholder funded ‘terror mosque’ planner

On last night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart skewered these antics as a “dangerous game of guilt by association you can play with almost anybody,” and proceeded to tie Fox News to al-Qaida by connecting Fox News parent News Corp’s second-largest shareholder, Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, to the Carlyle Group, which has done business with the bin Laden family, “one of whose sons — obviously I’m not going to say which one — may be anti-American.” But Stewart didn’t need to take all those steps to make the connection: Al-Waleed has directly funded Rauf’s projects to the tune of more than $300,000. If Fox newscasters can darkly suggest “terror dollars” are sluicing into the Islamic center’s coffers via “shady characters,” then are Al-Waleed, and News Corp. leader Rupert Murdoch, by the same logic, also terror stooges?

It’s an opinion piece by some guy called Luttwak at a think tank. His concern that Obama would be seen as an apostate by the Muslim world does not seem to be coming to fruition, possibly because most Muslims (at least the ones not holed up in the hills of Tora Bora) are sophisticated enough to understand the nuances of Obama’s upbringing.

Al-Waleed owns a 7 percent, $2.3 billion stake in News Corporation. Likewise, News Corporation owns a 9 percent, $70 million stake — purchased in February — in Rotana, Al-Waleed’s Saudi media conglomerate. Put another way: Rupert Murdoch and Fox News are in business, to the tune of billions of dollars, with one of the “Terror Mosque Imam’s” principal patrons.

What is this whole “seed” thing?

If a Jewish mom gives her child a Jewish name and then immediately adopts him out to a non-Jewish family who raises him as a Unitarian, does the “seed” still grow?

If a Hindu Brahmin converts to Catholicism, although he was “seeded” into the highest caste by his daddy’s literal seed, is his conversion not accepted of him?

This is one of the weirder forms of tribalism and essentialism that I’ve seen in a long, long time.

If Mr. Graham’s father was a cracker, does that mean he has to be one too?

75 theheat  Fri, Aug 20, 2010 4:12:24pm

Their hangup with sperm is freaky. Anyone that refers to sperm as seed is a certifiable repressed fundie and their wife probably has a stack of Mandingo books under the bed to fantasize over while the menfolk quietly jerk off drinking a Shirley freakin’ Temple. They way they talk about “it” (Shhhhhhh) you’d think it could get a driver’s license and buy a house, while possessing the magical powers of a unicorn.

It bugs the shit out of me, how fundies use all these PG-rated stupidass names for sex and genitals, trying to evoke something ethereal when they use their idiot scriptural words for sperm, penis, whatever. I could go into Kevin Costner’s Bull Durham rant, but I won’t… but I want to… I really, really want to…

What the hell year is it again? These shitasses are trying to drag us back to the dark ages every time they open their mouths, talking to adults as if they’re children. Really dumb, repressed, children.

Their hangup with sperm is freaky. Anyone that refers to sperm as seed is a certifiable repressed fundie and their wife probably has a stack of Mandingo books under the bed to fantasize over while the menfolk quietly jerk off drinking a Shirley freakin’ Temple. They way they talk about “it” (Shhh) you’d think it could get a driver’s license and buy a house, while possessing the magical powers of a unicorn.

So, this Rabbi has some emergency surgery done, and it was done at the first available place, the local Catholic hospital. A few days after the operation, a nun comes into his room to change the sheets on his bed, and she notices the crucifix, that was hanging on the wall, missing. “Rabbi, did you do something with the crucifix?” And the Rabble replied… “Well sister, I decided one suffering Jew in this room was enough, and I removed it.”

re: #74 Cato the Elder

What is this whole “seed” thing?

If a Jewish mom gives her child a Jewish name and then immediately adopts him out to a non-Jewish family who raises him as a Unitarian, does the “seed” still grow?

If a Hindu Brahmin converts to Catholicism, although he was “seeded” into the highest caste by his daddy’s literal seed, is his conversion not accepted of him?

This is one of the weirder forms of tribalism and essentialism that I’ve seen in a long, long time.

If Mr. Graham’s father was a cracker, does that mean he has to be one too?

It just baffles me that he appears to be supporting Muslim tradition to insist that Obama must be a Muslim, rather than Christian tradition, to accept that Obama is a Christian.

Does this mean that if I decided to get saved by Franklin Graham, he wouldn’t be too sure of me because of the ‘seed’ of Judaism?

How does this square with what I understand to be the fundamental belief of Evangelical Protestantism that one becomes a Christian through an individual experience of salvation?

This is all too much f*cking crazy going around.

Maybe, you could post some of those adorable baby animal threads. Honestly, the state of things makes me want to vomit.

And the smug smirking of those GOP idiots on the previous thread. AGW will kill billions if left unchecked. They simply don’t care and smugly, stupidly mock those who aren’t bought and paid for soulless corporate douches, and who don’t want to drive off that cliff.

Those are exactly the types that I feel should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Seeing that crap, and Coughlin in the same thread after seeing another post about attacks on relativity (Special relativity for crying out loud!) from the wingnuts, has simply turned me bitter.

With the GOP stance on AGW and their chance of winning some more seats in the elections and their ability to block so many things, the existence of America is also at stake.

I would imagine that Franklin Graham would not consider Obama a born again Christian unless Obama self identified that way. To people like Franklin Graham, a born again Christian is a true Christian, and if you are a born again Christian, you usually make claim to that aspect of your faith.

If Obama has never made a public statement to that fact, then someone like Graham would question his Christianity.

re: #117 tnguitarist

Why is that? Honest question. I am not wise in the ways of Judaism.

There are several reasons. With many Jewish traditions, there is a fundamental mixture of practicality and understanding of human nature, along with deeply spiritual concepts. All of these reasons are simultaneously true.

1. You don’t always know who the father is, but you do always know who the mother is.

2. These laws were made in less civilized times. If a woman got raped and then became pregnant, in this way the child, and she, would not be outcast. To this day, such women and children are treated as less than human by many other cultures. I am deeply proud that in mine, they are both still Jews.

3. Tribe goes through the father, being Jewish goes through the mother.
was a way to keep Jewish lands from being inherited by children who might inherit land form a Jewish father, but, associate with the tribes of their (non Jewish) mother, and this was a way of maintaining continuity of the land.

4. Everyone knows that the primary teacher of a child is the mother. If you are going to be given a firm Jewish identity, it will be imprinted early, and it will come from her more than it does from the father.

5. There is a great deal of mysticism involving the miracle of birth. Women are considered to be closer to G-d inherently because of their natural capacity to bring new life into the world. Given that, it follows that the transmission would go through the mother.

If I had a powerful seed like the seed of Islam, or Christianity, or Judaism (or Buddhism, or Hinduism, or even Mormonism), I would first replicate it in the lab until I had millions of them, and go out and plant them in the hearts of my fellow humans.

Good thing such seeds only grow in one heart at a time, or there would be seed-wars.

Ejaculation makes a man ritually unclean, so he would need to wash before rejoining the camp.

Hi publicity stunted! Ice asks me to tell you she’s a big fan (me too btw!). Thanks for the suggestion but I think her finger will heal before we get anything like that sorted out. We also have a ‘Bamboo’ tablet and pen which lets you write freehand and converts it to type for you (works surprisingly well) but even that is causing her too much pain to use much.

On the subject of voice recognition software, I had to make a phone call last week and encountered a software-based customer service ‘bot’ which didn’t understand me until I started answering in an English accent. That cracked ice up big time :)

Yes. That is, some of Ford’s antisemitic shit was read out on Coughlin’s program. i don’t think (?) by ford, but there is some famous recollection by a jewish (American) writer of walking down a street in brooklyn and hearing coughlin’s show blaring antisemitic (ford) propaganda— out of every window on a nice summer day.

I found a site that puts them firmly together. I was hesitating to post it because it’s attached to a site that’s anti-AA which I find appalling. But it has pictures of Ford receiving the Grand Cross from the Third Reich and Ford’s published anti-Semitic literature.

And this bit:

Henry Ford’s anti-semitic campaign brought him so much trouble that he ostensibly backed off and declared that he was repudiating anti-Semitism and The International Jew. Ford met with some Jewish leaders and declared peace. But Ford really just switched to using front men like Father Charles Coughlin, the father of hate radio, to promote his opinions. Father Coughlin republished, with the help of Henry Ford and his secretary Ernest Liebold, more rabidly hateful anti-Semitic literature, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion.50

I know it’s a no-no to post without links, but if you google “father coughlin henry ford” it’s the first link that comes up.

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: ‘Free to good home. You want it, you take it.’
For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice.
He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal. So he changed the sign to read: ‘Fridge for sale $50.’

The next day someone stole it!

I found a site that puts them firmly together. I was hesitating to post it because it’s attached to a site that’s anti-AA which I find appalling. But it has pictures of Ford receiving the Grand Cross from the Third Reich and Ford’s published anti-Semitic literature.

And this bit:

I know it’s a no-no to post without links, but if you google “father coughlin henry ford” it’s the first link that comes up.

Late to this thread, since I’ve spent the better part of the day nursing a wine-induced hangover. Apparently, grad school is exactly like undergrad, except the free booze is much higher quality.

I think I’ll just let Penn Jillette speak to Franklin Graham for me:

223 Cato the Elder  Fri, Aug 20, 2010 5:51:54pm

In case “Sallie Parker” is still reading here:

You claimed that no one could cite anti-Semitic rhetoric by Fucker Coughlin.

Wiki:

After the 1936 election, Coughlin increasingly expressed sympathy for the fascist policies of Hitler and Mussolini as an antidote to Bolshevism.[17] His CBS radio broadcasts became suffused with antisemitic themes. He blamed the Depression on an “international conspiracy of Jewish bankers”, and also claimed that Jewish bankers were behind the Russian Revolution. On November 27, 1938, he said “There can be no doubt that the Russian Revolution … was launched and fomented by distinctively Jewish influence.”

He began publication of a magazine, Social Justice, during this period. Coughlin claimed that Marxist atheism in Europe was a Jewish plot against America. The December 5, 1938 issue of Social Justice included an article by Coughlin which reportedly closely resembled a speech made by Joseph Goebbels on September 13, 1935 attacking Jews, atheists and communists, with some sections being copied verbatim by Coughlin from an English translation of the Goebbels speech. At a rally in the Bronx in 1938, he reportedly gave a Nazi salute and said, “When we get through with the Jews in America, they’ll think the treatment they received in Germany was nothing.”[18] However, the source of this quote is not identified and contemporary sources do not include this statement. Coughlin did state “Nothing can be gained by linking ourselves with any organization which is engaged in agitating racial animosities or propagating racial hatreds.” (NY TImes, Feb. 27, 1939). Furthermore, in an interview with Edward Doherty of The Liberty magazine, Coughlin states:
“My purpose is to help eradicate from the world its mania for persecution, to help align all good men. Catholic and Protestant, Jew and Gentile, Christian and non-Christian, in a battle to stamp out the ferocity, the barbarism and the hate of this bloody era. I want the good Jews with me, and I’m called a Jew baiter, an anti-Semite.”[19]

On November 20, 1938, two weeks after Kristallnacht, Coughlin, referring to the millions of Christians killed by the Russian Marxists, said “Jewish persecution only followed after Christians first were persecuted.”[20] After this speech, and as his programs became more antisemitic, some radio stations, including those in New York and Chicago, began refusing to air his speeches without pre-approved scripts; in New York, his programs were cancelled by WINS and WMCA, leaving Coughlin to broadcasting on the Newark part-time station WHBI. On December 18, 1938 two thousand of Coughlin’s followers marched in New York protesting potential asylum law changes that would allow more Jews (including refugees from Hitler’s persecution) into the U.S., chanting, “Send Jews back where they came from in leaky boats!” and “Wait until Hitler comes over here!” The protests continued for several months. Donald Warren, using information from the FBI and German government archives, has also argued that Coughlin received indirect funding from Nazi Germany during this period.[21]

After 1936, Coughlin began supporting an organization called the Christian Front, which claimed him as an inspiration. In January 1940, a New York City unit of the Christian Front was raided by the FBI for plotting to overthrow the government. Coughlin had never been a member but his reputation suffered a fatal decline.[22]

I need a sign to let me know you’re here
All of these lines are being crossed over the atmosphere
I need to know that things are gonna look up
‘Cause I feel us drowning in a sea spilled from a cup

When there is no place safe and no safe place to put my head
When you feel the world shake from the words that are said

[Chorus:]
And I’m calling all wingnuts
I’m calling all you wingnuts

I won’t give up if you dont give up [Repeat x4]

I need a sign to let me know you’re here
‘Cause my TV set just keeps it all from being clear
I want a reason for the way things have to be
I need a hand to help build up some kind of hope inside of me

[Chorus:]
And I’m calling all wingnuts

The conspiracy theories involving Bush taking over and putting Americans into concentration camps was laughably ridiculous when proposed by those on the left. It is more ridiculous now that the right have adopted it as their conspiracy theory.

“I’m the crazy one!”
“No you’re not, I’m the crazier one!”

The folks on the Right are more willing (historically speaking) to kill lots of other Americans over their pet conspiracy theories.

They don’t actually demonstrably help people. It’s really hard to demonstrate the success or failure for something like AA. There is no good reason to believe they have any effectiveness at all.

There are also two forms of AA: there’s the ‘twelve steps’, which is what AA claims it’s really about, and there are the meetings. AA itself doesn’t claim that meetings help people remain sober, only that following the twelve steps do.

It’s all a very mixed bag, and I think generalized therapy is a lot better than AA, since it doesn’t come with weird evangelical baggage.

re: #242 marjoriemoon

They only manage to retain 75% of people after a year, according to their own data. As I said, studies of effectiveness for a self-selected population are really hard to do— are people joining AA because they have a huge problem and are desperate, or because they have decided they need to quite?— but there isn’t actually any good data to show that they are more effective than nothing at all.

For those who get sober while attending AA, they tend to credit AA, but even then we have no way of knowing if the same people, without AA, might not have stopped drinking on their own. About 5% of ‘alcoholics’ (itself a tricky category) spontaneously stop drinking over their lifetime without recidivism (a grim number.) An internal AA report indicated that they had exactly the same effectiveness over time— 5%.

I’m aware of all of that— but I’m generally hesitant to slag off AA because I do know a few people who attribute their sobriety to AA.

I feel about AA as I do religion in general— hey, if it works for you, who am I to criticise?

I know quite a few people for whom its worked. I don’t think you can claim ‘there’s the meetings’ and ‘then there’s the 12 steps’. Most people i know for whom its worked attended meetings and ignored the steps— but not at all.

I don’t think this unorganised amateur form of group therapy can take the place of rehab or counseling— but, for some folks it works. as you say, a mixed bag.

re: #245 marjoriemoon

Not really— and I say this as someone who used to work with teen runaways with drug problems. It takes a genuine connection for a support system to really work, and AA has significant problems in that regard— a lot of members use AA as a dating service, basically, there’s a lot of codependent and abusive relationships observed in any particular meeting. We had to steer kids away from some AA and NA meetings because they had, basically, sexual predators in them.

But again, AA itself doesn’t say the meetings, the support system, are what work, they say it’s the twelve steps€.

The program works if you work it. Seriously. Not everyone can be helped either, and they talk about that too.

See above— this is a self-selection problem. The same person getting sober while on AA might have gotten sober without AA. It’s not possible to test, and it’s not possible to test the general population against AA either— but the most mass, overarching look suggests that AA can help about 5% of people, which is about the number that spontaneously give up alcohol on their own.

Well, it’s not me who claims there’s the meetings and there’s the twelve steps— that’s AA. AA claims the twelve steps are the path to sobriety, not the meetings. That’s not my opinion, that’s what they say.

And the problem is: would those same people have gotten sober without AA? It’s possible. Self-selection makes it nearly impossible to test.

And I love that everyone just tries to ignore the weather. It was raining; nobody wore a raincoat, very few used an umbrella. That’s how I am. “Fine, rain on me, see if I care.”

And it’s kitschy, but I live near the Islamic Cultural Center (shh, don’t tell Palin) and it’s nice seeing Orthodox Jews and Muslims intermingling. There’s a halal butcher right next to a kosher pizza restaurant, and lots of kibitzing going on.

San Francisco doesn’t have a very big Jewish or Muslim population. It’s got a lot more Asian diversity than New York does, but not so much with a lot of other groups.

And people in SF tend to obsess about rain when its raining. I don’t really know why, but sidewalks turn into eye-poking parades. Of course, it only rains at all six months out of the year there.

I miss the intimacy of SF. I’ll be happy here for seven years, but I’m pretty sure I’ll want to go back at the end of that.
