I guess he can still be charged with being a creepy creep, though.

He's now cleared. He can go back to posting secret info on our troops to get them killed like a good moonbat would do.

The asshole should be hit with some solid. verifiable stuff related to Manning's document sump, but not on some drummed-up shit like this rape charge apparently was.

He is a creepy creep.

But a false accusation of rape (or anything, really) is a very awful thing to do to somebody, even to a creep. Damage is done; that quickly issued and quickly retracted charge is still out there, people wonder . . .

I have no patience for false charges of anything.

I prefer to use bokkens. Especially after listening to his little press conference.

I agree completely.

The best takedown of Assange that I've seen was done by Jon Stewart. If anyone can find the link, I'd be grateful.

Well, I think this is a slightly different game. Normally I'd agree with you but he is fucking with national security so I won't be terribly concerned if he meets with an accident or just disappears one day.

9 Targetpractice  Sat, Aug 21, 2010 10:53:01am

I'd guess that, if anything, this was an attempt to nail his ass down long enough for the US to find something to charge him with and file for extradition.

I'm not a huge fan of rendition, but I'd make an exception in his case.

He does look like someone whose parents had to tie a pork chop around his neck to the dog to play with him.

Maybe. It might also be a ploy to keep him out of Sweden. They might want to keep him moving around in areas that might be easier to deal with him.

14 Obdicut  Sat, Aug 21, 2010 10:58:29am

Huh. I'm surprised.

Hopefully, this charge wasn't levied at the behest of anyone in the US, otherwise Sweden is going to be pissed at us.

And yes, that matters.

It is difficult to get a rape or molestation charge to stick in Sweden, too.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some in the military/CIA that would love to see that happen. I found it highly ironic that he said that Secretary Gates stands by as innocent people die while he himself is helping the Taliban/AQ do such a thing.

I rather he go away, as in never to be near a computer again, not die/seriously injured.

re: #13 Killgore Trout

I hadn't thought of that. Sweden has some of the most permissive information laws on the planet, so it's a natural place for him to be.

However, given that what he does is on an entirely different level than the normal Swedish 'information must be free' hackers, I doubt he has much support from that community.

Sweden withdraws warrant for WikiLeaks founder

The first files in Wikileaks' "Afghan War Diary" revealed classified military documents covering the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2010. Assange said Wednesday that WikiLeaks plans to release a new batch of 15,000 documents from the Afghan war within weeks.

The Pentagon says the information could risk the lives of U.S. troops and their Afghan helpers and have demanded WikiLeaks return all leaked documents and remove them from the Internet.
[snip]

Apart from the comment from Assange, WikiLeaks' Twitter page had a link to an article in Swedish tabloid Expressen, which first reported the allegations.

"We were warned to expect 'dirty tricks.' Now we have the first one," it said.

Second trick -- an accusation of molestation.

Moore backs WikiLeaks accused

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore has donated $5,000 US to the defence of the U.S. Army private who is suspected of giving classified documents to the WikiLeaks website.

Moore told The Associated Press that he hopes to make the public understand that Pte. Bradley Manning allegedly exposed what Moore called "war crimes."

I caught this change in story on Yahoo News. It changed very quickly. I still think he is an opportunist.

20 RogueOne  Sat, Aug 21, 2010 11:04:40am

I partially agree with Assange and really like the intent of wikileaks. Most of the stuff they've released over the years should be out in the open. He needs to learn that, taken to the extreme, people can die with the release of some info. He should take that into consideration.

Manning OTOH, deserves a military trial and then to be taken out and hung as a traitor. He violated 2 different oaths and spies deserve the ultimate punishment.

Not half as dirty a trick as Assange's putting American troops and Afghani civilians in mortal danger with his ' look-at-us-neener-neener' Wikileaks.

That's not the point. It smells like a dirty trick regardless.

So I guess we just accuse everyone who we're politically opposed to of rape, what a great idea
