Glenn Beck Tea Partiers Try to Coopt MLK, Fail Miserably As Expected

Wingnuts • Views: 5,436

Today thousands of angry white people have descended on the National Mall on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, to whine about how they’re being persecuted and unfairly maligned, sponsored by a race-baiting lunatic Fox News host who promotes the ideology of the far right and the John Birch Society and has called President Obama “a racist with a deep-seated hatred of white culture.”

They’re broadcasting this bizarre inversion of reality on C-SPAN, where you can see that they’ve done their best to recruit as many black speakers and absolutely horrible black singers as they could, because that’s how they prove they’re not racist … at all!

Glenn Beck managed to fill the stage with black people, but when the cameras pan around the crowd, it’s an unbroken sea of white faces. And the crowd is nowhere near the 300,000 figure Beck was trumpeting in advance.

If Martin Luther King were alive today, these same people would be vilifying him as a communist and an evil progressive. The irony meter is off the scale on this parade of white victimhood.

Here’s a photo of one of Beck’s admirers; they banned signs from this rally, so he simply put his racist slogan on a t-shirt instead.

What August 28th is really about:

Martin Luther King, Jr. - I Have a Dream

6 Charles Johnson  Sat, Aug 28, 2010 9:09:35am

They’re now pushing the white Christian founding of America myth.

The previous speaker, Alveda King, niece of the Martin Luther King, Jr:

She is the director of African-American Outreach at the Roman Catholic pro-life group Priests for Life. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, a conservative Washington, D.C. think-tank

Regarding Martin Luther King Jr. and family, Alveda King claimed that “Mrs. Coretta Scott King knew that her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was pro-life” regarding Martin Luther King Jr. winning the Margaret Sanger Award from Planned Parenthood in 1966. In 1994, Alveda King wrote a letter condemning Coretta Scott King’s support for abortion and gay rights. According to Fox News, Alveda King has “long argued” that Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican. University of Cambridge historian David Garrow stated in a Salon profile of Alveda King: “King was not only not a Republican, he was well to the left of the Democratic Party of the 1960s.”

The Advocate magazine has quoted King speaking out against gay rights. At a 1997 rally in Sacramento protesting proposed state legislation to extend civil rights to gays and lesbians, King said: “To equate homosexuality with race is to give a death sentence to civil rights. No one is enslaving homosexuals…or making them sit in the back of the bus.” In a 1998 speech at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: “Homosexuality cannot be elevated to the civil rights issue. The civil rights movement was born from the Bible. God hates homosexuality.” King had been making public appearances throughout 1997 criticizing gay rights.

King is a pro-life speaker and often speaks on college campuses about abortion issues. She joined the pro-Life movement, crusading to offer women alternatives to abortion. King is also noted for her opposition to same-sex marriage. Angela D. Dillard classifies King as among “prominent black members of the Religious Right.” King is currently a board member of the organization Georgia Right to Life.

—-

The Priests for Life organization provides an extensive collection of photos of live fetuses as well as aborted fetuses, via the internet. Its photos have also appeared in print. According to Pavone: “There is no single thing that I have seen more powerful to change people on abortion than simply showing them the pictures….When people see what abortion does to a baby, they are stung to the heart and their consciences are awakened.”

—-

As part of the 1998 Tobacco Settlement Agreement, the Philip Morris corporation released millions of pages of documents concerning their operations. These detail how, after the Environmental Protection Agency moved in 1993 to have second-hand tobacco smoke declared a carcinogen, Philip Morris hired the AdTI to campaign against the move.

AdTI was a member organization of the Cooler Heads Coalition which asserts that “the science of global warming is uncertain” and is focused on “dispelling the myths of global warming by exposing flawed economic, scientific, and risk analysis.”

This event is billed as “non-political” in the sense that the people who are attending really believe that they are so obviously, completely right that anybody who is not part of their group either just doesn’t understand (yet), or is not really American.

Politics is about one group disagreeing with another legitimate group. These people do not recognize the legitimacy of disagreement.

Didn’t think LDS’ers did that sort of stuff, but who can say?

It’s a bit religious for my taste, but then again, that’s more or less the way it was billed for a while now, so who can be surprised?

Yeah. Beck’s always improvising though and I was being facetious. I figured that him being a caricature of himself every time he’s in front of a camera he may at any moment break out into another cartoon personality of himself.

I wonder why these folks feel like they are isolated from the rest of society? This is like some manufactured pity party. These “Christians” have as much right to practice their faith, no one is stopping them, what’s the problem. These people have as much right to voice their political and social opinions, they haven’t been pushed to the side and made some sort of victims. Nothing has happened in this country to vilify these people, they haven’t been denied their civil rights.

Gus, he’s a Mormon, I doubt he would do that, unless his intent was to suddenly isolate himself from a large base of supporters. As a Mormon, he can bring enough ecumenical preaching to the table to please everyone, there is no need for him to take that route.

re: #26 Walter L. Newton

Part of it is that they’ve been told by people they trust that other people, living in other ways, getting the same rights as they do, is those people getting ‘special rights’. And they’ve been told that people like them should run things, and the fact that that isn’t always true seems threatening.

And now, the economy sucks, and they’re being told the prophecy is coming true—‘they’ are taking it all away from you.

The fact that Democrats, and black people, and atheists, and gay people and what have you are also living in scary times and out of work doesn’t seem to register very well.

Politics is about one group disagreeing with another legitimate group. These people do not recognize the legitimacy of disagreement.

There was at least one black there today… pandering…

Alveda King, a niece of the late civil rights leader, also participated in the “Restoring Honor” rally, saying that her uncle would have approved of the event.

“If Uncle Martin could be here today, he would sure commend us of giving honor where honor is due,” she told a large, cheering crowd.
King said earlier she’s been accused of hijacking “the dream,” but on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Friday night, she said “the dream” is in her genes.

“I don’t have to reclaim the civil rights movement, I’m part of the civil rights movement,” she said, noting her family’s home and her father’s church were bombed when she was younger. While the NAACP put out a cautious statement regarding the rally, there has been plenty of criticism of the event.

Not so sure that should matter too awful much - the chant itself, in addition to having been worn out long before I ever first heard it, is of course a thinly-veiled threat of violence. And Beck, thus far, does not have Freddy’s Fashion Mart or a Tawanna Brawley to his credit yet.

Al’s group is openly a black-interest group, for the most part.

Beck claims to represent ‘the real America’. That’s the issue.

I don’t think the lack of black TPers indicates that they’re racist, though, so much as that they really lack any appeal to people who aren’t white. I think they’d love to get more racial diversity in their events, and they do seem to try, at least with speakers. It just isn’t working. At all.

Well, clearly the TPers can’t represent themselves as a white interest group, for all sorts of reasons, but they effectively are. As I say, I don’t think they mean to be exclusionary, and I get the impression that they kind of wonder why non-white Americans aren’t interested in their cause, and would like to fix that.

Perhaps, but I think that even if they could get rid of all the really unpleasant stuff, they still wouldn’t be seeing black or Latino Americans really getting interested in what they’re selling. Since they see their agenda as self-evident, this tends to bog them down in confusion, and then they get a little crabby about it. I do give them kudos for their apparently ongoing attempt to at least have black speakers and performers at events, I do see that as a sincere attempt to have some diversity and leave the door open.

Unfortunately for them, they ARE appealing to racists, and the more racists who come in, the less likely they are to get the diversity they might prefer. Vicious cycle.

Freedom? If right wing protesters were treated even a hundredth as badly as left wing protesters were (and still are) treated, they’d be sobbing and pissing their pants. Here’s something that clarifies the point pretty well:

Image: story.jpg

Leading up to the 2008 RNC, people who just planned to peacefully protest had their houses raided and were put in jail for just thinking about it. During the 2004 RNC, protestors (and anybody in the vicinity) were scooped up with orange plastic nets and detained on piers without due process. Don’t even get me started on “free speech zones.”

Right wingers should take note of the amazing amount of freedom they’re granted compared to the left wing. If they whine this much when they’re coddled, I can only imagine what they’d say if they weren’t. Actually, I can predict that pretty well. Being cowards, they’d all give up and go home quietly.

And Carlos Santana (the guitar player, not the Indians’ catcher).

What is so disconcerting is that it is you who are so fooled. Your post contained zero content, much like the far right media’s message you seemed to have swallowed. It really is not about Right or Left. It is about, “We The People”. The vast majority of those that fund the far Right shenanigans are multinationals that don’t give a rats ass about We The People. The Left is not innocent of this crime either.
