Fire at Tennessee Mosque Site Ruled Arson

US News • Views: 4,497

In Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where another outbreak of bad anti-Muslim craziness has been raging around another proposed Islamic center, officials have ruled that a fire at the building site was caused by arson.

(CBS/AP)  Federal officials are investigating a fire that started overnight at the site of a new Islamic center in a Nashville suburb.

Ben Goodwin of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to CBS Affiliate WTVF that the fire, which burned construction equipment at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, is being ruled as arson.

This one's actually more disturbing to me than the Cordoba center...at least in Manhattan, people can be led astray by emotions related to 9/11.

This is just dumb, through and through.

"Don't let them build a mosque here! They seem like the sort who might light things on fire! And to prove my point, uhhh, i will light this stuff on fire!"

7 brownbagj  Sat, Aug 28, 2010 5:37:03pm

Dang it. I did not mean to make a pun there. Only was following up on a post I had stated a couple of days ago that a fire was starting and that it would easily get out of control.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

Hey. Unwashed foot mitten. These folks protesting in TN have already given Christians like me a black eye...it's embarrassing. Speculating that the arson was likely committed by one of these felchards is nothing more than playing the odds. If by some odd circumstance the arson was committed by someone else, Charles and the others will post it immediately.

In the meantime, these protesting idiots should go be not seen and not heard. We have a better chance of being ruled by Martians than by Sharia law in the US.

Tucker says the arrest is "a bit of a surprise" to members of the mosque, who had expressed concern that the fire might be hate crime.

I don't think the TN case has a suspect yet, but until they do, you cannot reasonably say that examples like the above are made-up hate speech.
And I am not saying that someone hateful and/or anti-Muslim didn't do this. .... that could very well be the case.

"They are not a religion. They are a political, militaristic group," Bob Shelton, a 76-year-old retiree who lives in the area, told The Associated Press.

Shelton was among several hundred demonstrators who recently wore "Vote for Jesus" T-shirts and carried signs that said "No Sharia law for USA!," referring to the Islamic code of law.

There is nothing to defend here. Or am I missing something?

We have a better chance of being ruled by Martians than by Sharia law in the US.

I explained this to my right-wing, evangelical uncle just a couple of weeks back. I don't think it ever dawned on him just how much we'd have to willingly give up for that to happen. Our entire system of governance would have to disappear.

Won't happen. Ever.

Years - almost a decade - of Robert Spencer's "passionate, reasonable voice" (Horowitz) declaiming over and over that "there may be moderate Muslims, but there is no moderate Islam" are beginning to bear strange fruit.

104 palomino  Sat, Aug 28, 2010 6:08:21pm

OT: here's Beck from earlier today...

“Something beyond imagination is happening,’’ he said. “America today begins to turn back to God.’’

Beck exhorted the crowd to “recognize your place to the creator. Realize that he is our king. He is the one who guides and directs our life and protects us.’’ He asked his audience to pray more. “I ask, not only if you would pray on your knees, but pray on your knees but with your door open for your children to see,’’ he said.

First, this is boilerplate culture war rhetoric. "Accept God as I see him or you don't count."

Second, this is today's Republican Party, as they continue to morph into the Christian White People's Party.

Finally, can we dismiss the notion that tea partiers are only about small govt? What they seem to want is small govt when the opposition is in charge, but theocracy when power is returned (by God?) to their side.

127 What, me worry?  Sat, Aug 28, 2010 6:14:21pm

Back in February this year, another mosque in Nashville was vandalized.

The Muslim community in TN has faced what seems like an onslaught of hatred and violence since 9/11, from individuals and groups determined to enforce their rigid worldviews on a peaceful Muslim Americans. It’s vital that news organizations remind Tennesseans that when it comes to hate speech and violence, Muslims in TN are on the receiving end.

At that time, Steve Edelstein, the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation in Nashville, wrote a letter to the mosque.

To the Leaders and Members of the Al-Farooq Mosque:

Please know that we, in the Jewish community, are appalled by the desecration of your place of worship. One of the most important freedoms accorded by the U.S. Constitution is the freedom to worship as one chooses, and it is why this country has attracted immigrants representing nearly all the religions of the world.

Unfortunately, there are those in this country who, through ignorance, unbridled hatred of those different from them or a need for attention, commit these abhorrent acts. As Jews, we have been subjected to similar attacks on our synagogues and communal institutions in Nashville over the years and can empathize with your anguish.

As G-d’s children, we must all speak out against intolerance, bigotry and the resulting violence.

May you find support from the Nashville community to help you through this difficult time.

Can I get an Amen!

Won't take that long.

Bachmann already made that claim.

On a day when crowd estimates could provide their respective groups with political clout, Bachmann asked her audience how many thought more than 1 million people were in attendance. The question was met by big cheers from the gathering of about 1,000. "We're not going let anyone get away with saying there were less than a million here today because we were witnesses," Bachmann said.

Hypothetical question - If John McCain had won the election, do you think all of this anti-Muslim nonsense would be so strong? I know there are certainly other factors that contribute towards the craziness (namely, with the economy in the crapper, people are angry and look for "enemies" to direct that anger towards), but without the constant stream of hate towards Obama and the left since he has been in office, would the views of people like Geller and Spencer ever even have had a shot at catching on?

With Bush as President, even at a time where one would have expected tons of backlash against Muslims, it was surprisingly (and thankfully) calm. Now that a lefty is in office and you have Fox News and right-wing blogs in full-on hate-spewing mode, it's getting worse. I have to think that is the biggest reason.

Probably not. The reason being because the Obama victory set the stage for the far-right extremist on two fronts regarding racist bigotry, anti-Muslim bigotry, and general xenophobia by way of the birth certificate conspiracy. By the time 2010 came rolling in the America far-right was already primed with hatred by way of that and most of the Tea Party rhetoric. We also have to keep in mind that a great deal of Islamaphobia has been directed even towards the POTUS by these right wing extremists. The Tea Party for example would probably not exist had McCain won.

It seems to me that to some extent, the President also serves as a kind of "racist-in-chief," although since Obama's election we haven't been able to notice it. If it's a regular old white guy in charge, borderline racists have a harder time buying into "dark folks are gonna git us" conspiracy theories. They know that the President is "one of us," so he's in position to prevent any such "takeover of Amur'ca." Without that in place, they feel compelled to step forward and combat the Brown Menace themselves. Just a specious theory of mine, but it seems to be bearing out so far.

Madera Islamic center vandalism called hate crime

MADERA, Calif. -- Recent vandalism at a Madera Islamic center, including a brick thrown at the building, is being investigated as a hate crime.

Madera County Sheriff's deputies say since Aug. 18, the Masjid Madera center has been the victim of a series of attacks.

Three signs that read "No Temple for the God of terrorism at Ground Zero. ANB," "Wake up America, the Enemy is here. ANB" and "American Nationalist Brotherhood" were left at the center. On Friday, a brick was thrown at a wall.

Officers are asking anyone with information about the attacks to contact the department.

It could be. But there have been instances of arson at Christian churches, and we don't put them all down to racism, or Islam, or Satanism. This could be politically or religiously motivated arson, or it could be garden-variety idiot firebugs.

Either way arson is a serious crime and I hope they catch whoever did it and mete out appropriate punishment. And then a little extra.

The timing is suspicious.

Sarcasm.

The etiquette around here seems to be that if you're being sarcastic, follow your post with between one and three slash marks ("/") depending on the level of sarcasm involved. It can be on the same line or below, and optionally followed by a description of who you were speaking as.

During the civil rights struggle, arsons at predominantly black churches could clearly be laid at the feet of racists opposing equal rights and integration. If there's a vocal mass movement currently opposing the people whose place of religion gets burned, then followers of that movement are going to be a prime suspect. It just so happens that there is such a movement against Islam today.

I don't think that has much to do with it. The economic situation is a bigger contributing factor. People feel threatened by forces they can't begin to understand or master, and turn to easy answers and nameable "menaces".

We really are at sea with this economic downturn. This administration doesn't instill much confidence, and a return to Bush-style governance hardly seems likely to improve matters.

Most of us can cope without lashing out at scapegoats. Unfortunately, most is not the same thing as all.

Go "hunting" like that in most parts of the country and you'll find yourself in the slammer if you're lucky, or shot to rags by armed civilians who don't appreciate home invasions whatever the excuse, if you're not lucky.

Lynch mobs are not in fashion, not in blue states, and not in red. This, in the final analysis, is why we don't have lynch mobs.

Something for those individuals who are claiming that this mosque fire was an "inside job" by "Islamists":
There is one major difference between Islamic terrorists, and terrorists on the American far right - willingness to admit responsibility.

Whenever you see any act done by Islamic militants no matter where the target is, they almost ALWAYS are very eager, and very quick to jump up and claim responsibility, whether it be AlQaeda-related groups, or some obscure cell that no one has previously heard of. There's almost always a press release.
On the American far right, on the other hand, because of RICO and other organized crime statutes that we have on the books, American terrorists are always the "lone wolf", with no obvious ties to hate groups. Every time you see a Eric Rudolph, a Terry Nichols or a James von Brunn in the news, the people who they are associated with are always denying that they knew anything of the acts.

So far, in the past month we've had attempted arson of two mosques - one in Texas, one in Tennessee, and at least three cases of vandalism. Of those, how many have had a radical Islamist group claim responsibility?
Yeah, that would be "none".

If there are a bunch of people screaming at those churches, then it's a pretty clear signal to the "run of the mill sickos" that they've got free targets. Or at least, it creates the appearance that they do. In the end, it doesn't really matter what the arsonist was personally thinking. Whether he's an anti-Islamist, a firebug or whatever, the climate created by the anti-Islamists is what created the opening for the act.

Wait. Are you actually claiming that a significant number of arson cases of black churches in the south during the Civil Rights era were not set by white supremacists individuals and groups, but were unrelated cases? Just because there weren't convictions, or in many cases even arrests because of the complicity of the southern law enforcement individuals - those southern cops being upstanding Klan members and all - doesn't mean that those acts of terrorism weren't part of an overall intimidation effort.

Agree.

There's a damn Civil Rights Cold Case PROJECT

Today in the American South, scores of civil rights murders remain unsolved, uninvestigated, unprosecuted, and untold. Reporters from The Civil Rights Cold Case Project have reopened many of these "cold cases," investigating old leads, interviewing witnesses and family members, and turning up new evidence that prosecutors have used to build criminal cases against killers and conspirators who have walked free for more than 40 years.

*Murfreesboro*, Tennessee.

As an aside, during the Civil War Murfreesboro was a fairly passionate Rebel town in 1862. A fierce battle was fought near there on December 30th, 1862, and January 1st, 1863 (New Years Eve 1862 did not see any major action). General Braxton Bragg attacked the Union Army of the Cumberland, commanded by Major General William Rosencrans. Though Bragg made headway on the firrst day of the battle, the Union troops did not retreat and a follow-on assault on New Years day simply resulted in the Kentucky "Orphan's Brigade" (so called because the Confederate soldiers in it were "orphaned" when Kentucky remained loyal to the Union) being bled white on prepared positions. After that, Braxton Bragg retreated and the Union forces occupied the town. In the South the battle is known as Murfreesboro, but the North called it Stone's River (after the river that bisects the battlefield).

A Gallup survey indicates that in the first half of this year, 78 percent of Muslims approved of the job the president's doing in the White House, while just 24 percent of Mormons give Obama a thumbs up. According to the poll, the president's approval rating among Protestants and other Christians was 43 percent, it stood at 50 percent for Catholics, 61 percent among Jews, 63 percent for Atheists, Agnostics and those with no religion, and 64 percent for those from other non-Christian religions. The president's approval among all Americans stood at 48 percent.

It doesn't take a majority to look like a majority, if they yell loud enough, or if their actions are disgusting enough to attract the attention of a nation. Then there's the middle ground who are more interested in keeping the peace than any higher principle. Sometimes they may be complicit, sometimes not. Often I think that Sherriff Andy Griffith, if he were a real person, might have ended up supporting racism for the best of intentions.

I was reading a piece by bell hooks one time where she basically said that any white person who isn't actively working against racism is working for racism by default. At first I was offended - can't I just stay out of it? But over time, it's occurred to me that while the population of hardcore bigots is rarely very high, the "middle ground" population of those who enable bigotry is often enough to swing a majority. The person who says "I'll never eat at a lunch counter that serves black people" is one thing. The person who says "if I let black people eat at my lunch counter, I'll lose valued customers" is another. The latter may think of himself as making a rational business decision rather than being a racist, but in practice there is no difference.

It seems to me that a lot of historical law enforcement has fallen into the same gap. Not all, but enough. Even today, in some of the most "liberal" places of the country, we still get white cops shooting black motorists out of nothing more than pure unreasoning fear.

A search of the victim and the vehicle failed to produce any weapon. According to the Oregonian, a “woman who identified herself as Maria said when Perez leaned over to unfasten his seatbelt, police shot him three or four times.”

Tell me - how do you comply with an order to get out of your car without reaching for your seatbelt clasp?
