The Jan Brewer Train Wreck

Politics • Views: 3,013

An awesome train wreck of an opening statement from Jan Brewer, in Arizona’s gubernatorial debate. One of the most embarrassing political performances ever captured on video.

Youtube Video

And then, after the debate, Brewer refused to answer questions about her claim that there were “beheadings” near the border — and ended up turning and running from the media.

Here’s the news coverage from after the debate. She would not correct her statement about beheadings by the border.

It’s not as dramatic as they made it out to be, but it’s blatant.

How can you absolutely screw up the one portion of a debate that you actually can control with 100% certainty - the opening statement? Sheesh.

There’s only one response for that.

BOOMER: Brewer, why wouldn’t you recant the comment you made earlier about the beheadings in the desert?

REPORTER: Seriously, that’s a serious question, Governor.

BREWER: Well, this was an interesting evening tonight …

BOOMER (Voice over): She doesn’t answer, instead reiterates the debate’s talking points, charging that Goddard doesn’t have a plan.

BOOMER: Brewer, why won’t you recant the comments about the beheadings?

REPORTER: Governor, seriously …

BOOMER (Voice over): As other reporters chime in demanding an answer, this happens:

REPORTER: Governor, please answer the question about the headless bodies. Why won’t you recant that? Do you still believe that? Come on, Governor?

BREWER: (Pause) Okay, thank you all. (Exits)

GODDARD: I’m astonished, frankly. Everybody who’s studied this knows there are no beheadings. Arizona has the lowest violent crime rate we’ve had since 1983. Our law enforcement has done a great job, and why the Governor won’t simply say “I was wrong, there were no beheadings, Arizona is safe” I do not understand. This is hurting us incredibly.

I think the beheadings were central Mexico. The incident is no myth, the location is. For a reality check on immigration/smuggling/ deadly incidents at the border check out Border Wars, National Geographic. That would be one decent documentary view of the reality. So far anyway. Near the border would be the Juarez massacres.

43 Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All  Thu, Sep 2, 2010 10:22:52am

You know, I saw that, and I kinda feel bad for her. I disagree with her on a lot of things policy wise, but man, that’s got to be one of the most gut wrenching feelings to have when you freeze up like that.

That being said, I won’t shed a tear if enough people see it and actually pause and think to themselves, ‘Is this really the person we want running our state?’

However the beheadings business is flat out distasteful, and her unwillingness to admit that she was quite simply wrong about her statements that people were being beheaded in the desert makes me question her willingness to admit mistakes in the face of reality.

We’ll see what Arizona does soon enough.

For what it’s worth, Rasmussen has a notorious house effect slanted towards republican candidates polls before labor day. After labor day, There are changes made to the model to better reflect reality and you’ll see a narrowing of that house affect compared to other polling outfits.

The theory is that Scott Rasmussen wants to drive a narrative (in this case, that the republicans are on a tidal wave to take over the house and senate), but wants to make sure that he gets things right by election time, so he ‘tweaks’ his likely voter model and then you see some interesting shifts in polls. That and he will tend not to poll certain elections once you’re closer to November, which can also help his average (since most people aren’t going to count a poll taken 3 months before the election against you).

A rule of thumb for the Rasmussen house effect, For every 4 weeks before the election subtract 1 point from the republican candidate and add one to the democrat to a maximum of 4.

61 What, me worry?  Thu, Sep 2, 2010 10:33:41am

Good grief, what a maroon.

My family in Tucson tells me that when Janet Napolitano was gov, she vetoed nearly everything that came across her desk which were these crazy bills, like the immigration bill. Brewer, quite speechless in her glee, found it difficult to name even one. What is she ashamed of?

From the wiki:

As Governor, Napolitano set records for total number of vetoes issued. In 2005, she set a single session record of 58 vetoes, breaking Jane Dee Hull’s 2001 record of 28.[13][14] This was followed in June 2006, less than four years into her term, when she issued her 115th veto and set the all-time record for vetoes by an Arizona governor. The previous record of 114 vetoes was set by Bruce Babbitt during his nine years in office.[14][15] By the time she left office, the governor had issued 180 vetoes.[16]

It’s not just Brewer. Tons of politicians have been playing up the situation in Mexico for personal benefit. Almost entirely Republicans, of course. The only honest statement I’ve seen about the reality of violence crossing the border was from El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles, speaking about how El Paso can have such a low crime rate when there’s such chaos across the border:

Another reason, I think, is that we have this issue of the ability of people who are going to commit major crimes to do it in a foreign country. We know, and we’ve had instances. The last one that actually you could wrap your hands around was the one in Horizon, where the guy was kidnapped [in El Paso] and then murdered in Mexico. I think we have had instances like that, where people might have been connected to the cartel and kidnapped, but we would never know it because they commute back and forth between these two cities, and they happen to disappear and then they get found over in Juárez, and nobody knows what happened to them other than they’re dead in a foreign country.

That’s how it crosses over. Victims are taken to Mexico and killed or ransomed there.

to me, the debate kinda showed how the left and right are nowadays: the right says scary words, sounds hypocritical and dodges criticism, while the left sucks at calling that out and sounds wimpy.

i’ve been musing on this very issue today.

The right provides absolute certainty.

The left says “hey, things are incredibly complicated and…….[edited for clarity and time constraints]”

Rasmussen doesn’t change shit… the Democrats are going to get steamrolled in November… period.

I wouldn’t give the Republicans a 100% chance to steamroll the Democrats, but I do agree that it’s quite possible that the Democrats will be crushed. It’s just that Rasmussen has evidence of bias in their numbers and at the same time have performed about 60% of all the polls so far this election cycle.

Could be.
And once again I’ll have to live with the government others deserve….

BUT there was a poll, maybe last week…week before (Nate Silver might have wrote a post on it) that everyone was touting claiming that the Rs had a 20% chance of taking back the House.
OMG!
Gasp!
But with all the hand wringing that means the Ds have an 80% chance of retaining the House.

The thing that bugs me the most about polling is that for the most part these national ones do not give you a regional breakdown.

Wow. This was more painful to watch than Britney’s performance in the VMA.

“I have did…”

Indeed.

I don’t know… I haven’t kept up with her since I left Texas in 1899… but this recent incident doesn’t surprise me.

Wait, you`re that old?

Just for future reference, Brewer wins this election by 15-20%. I’m already calling it.

re: #39 lawhawk

I’d say that there’s a major difference between electing Brewer, and for example reelecting Rangel or Vitter. The latter two are part of a body of 438 and 100 respectively. Brewer wants to be governor of a state, and depending on how much power the governor in Arizona has, it might either be a really stupid idea or just a bad idea.

Here’s the news coverage from after the debate. She would not correct her statement about beheadings by the border.

[Video]It’s not as dramatic as they made it out to be, but it’s blatant.

I don’t like her, but I’m actually sympathetic to the brain freeze portion of her performance. I’ve been known to seize up under pressure (but I’m not running for governor of anything). Not addressing the beheading nonsense is a more serious matter and is pretty damning. Hopefully the press will keep hounding her.

Here’s a good question

Q:
Does Jan Brewer have a college degree?

A: Jan Brewer, governor of Arizona does not have a college degree, but she does have radiological technologist certification.

95 ReamWorks SKG  Thu, Sep 2, 2010 1:53:06pm

Is she OK? Seriously.

If a candidate for a job interview acted like that, I wouldn’t even think of hiring her. How can any voter support her?

96 enigma3535  Thu, Sep 2, 2010 2:50:08pm

She appears to have tripped on the 1st stair, struggled to keep on her feet while falling down the stairs and then landed squarely on her face.

As a fellow human who really dislikes [approaching “hates”] public speaking, I feel sorry for what that must have cost her in present and future mental anguish.

I agree with nothing that I have heard her spout out about [there are probably positions I have not heard her position on that I might agree with] … but I can’t pile on here after witnessing that train wreck.

I only feel the need to think positive energy about her mental health; hope she loses the election; and, can get on with her life in a normal fashion after this event.

Intelligence, cogency, facts and the ability to be honest are frowned upon in the GOP.

98 Jimmah  Fri, Sep 3, 2010 6:33:02am

Woo. Check out the “powerful GAZE muscle” on Jan Brewer. Followed by the classic “gotta’ git” move.
