No, that’s a Prickly Pear Cactus. McCain would know of it, since it grows in the desert. McCain recently shoved one of its fruits down JD Hayworth’s throat, figuratively speaking. And aren’t you glad he morphed like he did? Whatever the cost of his veering right, it spared Arizona being represented by a teabagger.

I’ll respect McCain more if he starts to act like a reasonable and rational man again now that he no longer has captain crazy leaning over his shoudler from the right.
He could start by helping break the filibuster on Obama’s attempt to help small businesses.

Why? i don’t support it either. Ever since the Shoreside Bank mini-scandal here in Chicago, I’ve been very skeptical of Obama’s community lending. Nor do i want to add more bad government debt. It’s a bad idea, and Obama’s promises on it are just unicorn farts as far as I’m concerned.

Wrong again… not the Fibonacci number… the Valenzetti Equation.
The Valenzetti Equation is the mathematical equation developed by the reclusive Princeton University mathematician Enzo Valenzetti. Its creation was the result of efforts made following the Cuban Missile Crisis by the United States and the Soviet Union to find a solution to the hostility and danger of imminent global disaster created by the Cold War. The equation was secretly commissioned through the UN Security Council and is used to predict the time of human extinction.

Keep taxes low instead. Leave the income tax rates at the Bush level for at least one more year. Lower taxes allow a business owner to funnel his money back into his business. It doesn’t have a dragging effect over time. Loans, by contrast, have conditions and require repayment. They are preferential, while low tax rates are universal. By letting tax rates rise, Obama is taking money from small business owners, which will leave them less able to qualify for or repay loans.

Yes… but you there are opposing mathematical opinions… you may want to take this hypothesis into consideration…
“Denoting by N the total number of humans who were ever or will ever be born, the Copernican principle suggests that humans are equally likely (along with the other N − 1 humans) to find themselves at any position n[dubious – discuss], so humans assume that our fractional position f = n/N is uniformly distributed on the interval (0, 1] prior to learning our absolute position.”

Bristol isn’t a grifter. Her mom’s a grifter. Bristol’s simply taking advantage of the publicity she got for being related to her mother. She’ll either get a manager who will make her a celebrity in her own right, or she’ll hook up with Levi and go back to nursing school in a couple of years when her mother’s star burns out.

This is a mother who loved her daughter so much that she would have and did marry her off to a completely unworthy baby daddy all for the sake of presenting a nice wholesome Christian family to the rubes at the GOP convention.

Agreed. Obama will not repeal his health care plan, but he could do that latter two. Make it clear that cap-and-trade is dead, and that the tax cuts will be extended for at least a year. These are measures that would pass with bipartisan support.

Generally saying that the right wants to only help the very rich is a smear, but now I”m wondering.
No. My argument is that small business owners (many of whom own a good bit more than a mom-and-pop store, given how the term is defined) will get hit by the rise in taxes and this will cancel out any stimulative effect of small business loans. In fact, I think the combination likely to have a net negative effect. So I argue for holding tax rates down instead.

Much of it, maybe most of it, would go towards upgrading the business’s products and services, paying bonuses, charitable giving, etc. It’s better to keep the taxes lower all the way around.

James Lee, the bomb-laden gunman who was killed by police in the lobby of the Discovery Channel, was once convicted and imprisoned for smuggling illegal immigrants into the country from Mexico.
The revelation that Lee had once smuggled illegals contrasts sharply with a hate-filled manifesto he left behind in which he describes illegal immigrants as “disgusting filth” and their children as “anchor baby filth.”

You completely miss my point
If you just make it so that people with pre-existing conditions can buy health insurance, then no one will buy insurance EVER until something has gone wrong with them and they need insurance to fit the bill…
That’s why there has to be a tax on people who don’t buy insurance to keep them from jumping on the bandwagon only when they actually need it.
So what about “Obamacare” do you find so objectionable exactly?

[Link: www.theatlantic.com…]
Digby argues that Moulitsas should have some kind of poetic license, and shouldn’t be taken literally. That strikes me as squishy. This statement—“in their tactics and on the issues, our homegrown American Taliban are almost indistinguishable from the Afghan Taliban”—is quite literal, and one is obliged to ask if it’s true or not.
The notion that “slut-shaming” and “nose-cutting” have the same deeper meaning—presumably a fear of women’s sexuality, though Digby doesn’t say this—is true as far as it takes you. Likewise the notion that black people should be slaves, the notion that they should be shipped back to Africa, that they should be segregated in communities, that they should not be allowed to intermarry, also have the same root cause—that blacks are unequal to whites. At varying points, Abraham Lincoln, John C. Calhoun, William T. Sherman, and Ulysses Grant held one or all of these views, and all probably died thinking blacks were unequal to whites. But that doesn’t make them interchangeable. Lincoln and Grant aren’t “less evil” versions of Calhoun.

Hm. Latest on the platform fire, if anyone’s interested. It appears stored barrels caught fire, not any of the 7 wells on the platform:
VERMILION BAY, LA (WAFB/AP) - An oil platform exploded and burned off the Louisiana coast Thursday, the second such disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in less than five months.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough said Mariner Energy, Inc., the Houston company that owns the rig, had deployed three firefighting vessels to the site and one already was in place fighting the blaze. The Coast Guard had reported that a 100-foot-wide oil sheen had been spotted near the platform, but now says there is no sign of an oil leak.
According to the Coast Guard, 13 people were on the platform when it caught fire Thursday morning. All 13 are accounted for and one injury was reported.
The workers will be taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma by helicopter to be fully checked out.
…
The Coast Guard said it received a call at 9:19 a.m. from a neighboring rig that Vermilion 380 was on fire. A helicopter pilot then reported at about 10 a.m. he saw 13 people floating in the water in special suits near a burning oil rig platform.Rescue helicopters and Coast Guard cutters were immediately sent to the scene. The rig is in water about 340 feet deep. Mariner said this is a platform rig, not a drilling rig.
The company reported there were seven active wells on the platform and one caught fire, but all are now shut in. Mariner also reported the platform produced an average of 1,400 barrels of oil per day, as well as 1,800 barrels of natural gas each day.
Mariner says stored barrels were the ones that caught fire and that dispersants are on standby if needed.

Yeah, no breasts by choice. ugh
I have a good friend who lost her mom to breast cancer. She got tested, and has the “gene” she also has a daughter.
All I can say is I’m lucky as hell so far. I cannot imagine what she’s going through. I’m with her on her journey, no decisions made. But it sucks.

Not one I would want to have to make.
My sister in law had an elective hysterectomy because her breast cancer was from too much estrogen. Her reconstructive surgery for her breast was not successful, unfortunately. Her body rejected the plastic form for her new boobie. So, she last 30 pounds, has a fab hair style and has moved on.

Are you saying we’re all lost, or will my Shield of Algebra protect me in the end?
Way to twist what I write and over simplify it to the point that you sound just like one of the stalkers.
The fact is that ignorant boobs like you snark at the threats of AGW because you are so uneducated.
You do periodically snark because you are afraid of actually having to fulfill some social contract that might make you minimally eco-conscious. Poor, poor you. Poor Cato, hates that he might have a duty to the wider world. How - Republican of you.
As to the actual deniers, That you claim I want executed, I have always been very specific about the corrupt politicians and propagandists. Whether you think it is worthy of satire or not, they are convincing large masses of people to vote for their own dooms - and to drag us all along with them. That is a fact. It is evil, and given the catastrophic consequences of it, it is no ordinary evil at that.
But in the mean time, feel free to be-clown yourself. Play the besotted fool and wallow in some sense of importance. You become more disgusting and pathetic with each post.
You have never particularly shown yourself to be this fucking stupid before. My patience with you is at an end.
Why should you be proud of being ignorant?
By what right do you have to pretend an education when you write with the sneering disdain of it that a worthless person like Sarah Palin has?
You really disgusting and groping for relevance if it becomes somehow important of you to glorify your own ignorance as a badge of honor.

Yes. Cato was outlining a standard reduction of the 4-color theorem to a question about 3-coloring edges of trivalent graphs. Ludwig didn’t agree and tired to explain why 3-colorings of edges is a question about finding a positive evaluation algorithm for a certain planar algebra. Cato rebutted with a detailed discussion of “Euler characteristic” evaluation algorithms and Ludwig returned his parry to explain how this technique almost answers the 4-color theorem.
It was brutal to say the least.

God explained it to him. Then God said, ‘Cross the river.’
Adam said, ‘What’s a river?’
God explained that to him and then said, ‘Go over to the hill…’
Adam said, ‘What is a hill?’
So God explained to Adam what a hill was. He told Adam, ‘On the other side of the hill you will find a cave.’
Adam said, ‘What’s a cave?’
After God explained, He said, ‘In the cave, you will find a woman.’
Adam said, ‘What’s a woman?’
So God explained that to him, too. Then, God said, ‘I want you to reproduce.’
Adam said, ‘How do I do that?’
God first said (under His breath), ‘Geez…..’ And then, just like everything else, God explained that to Adam, as well.
So, Adam goes down into the valley, across the river and over the hill into the cave and finds the woman.
Then, in about 5 minutes, he was back.
God, His patience wearing thin, said angrily, ‘What is it now?’
And Adam said…

Cato tried to bring back the fight earlier too. They both seem utterly unable to let go.
I tried to settle it by explaining what is an evaluation algorithm is?
I’ll do it again. Suppose you have a bunch of diagrams (think formal sums of links) constructed out of a few generators (think crossings) modulo some relations (think the HOMFLY relations). There are two obvious questions. Are these rules enough to reduce every link to a constant times the empty diagram? Does any way of reducing a given diagram give the same answer? Usually the former question is substantially easier than the latter. Often the first question is answered by giving an explicit algorithm for simplifying diagrams.
See, it’s simple.

Wikipedia compares Enzo Valenzetti’s mathematical work to the “Drake Equation”. Those who remember Enzo and his mathematical rigor will consider this an absurd insult to his name, as it is impossible to know any of the terms in the Drake Equation, thus any quantitative values derived from it are purely speculation. Alas, we must assign blame only to the Internet itself, where anyone may claim to be an expert on any subject.

#07… Foursomes are encouraged.
#06… You can still make money doing it as a senior.

#04… Your partner doesn’t hire a lawyer if you play with someone else.
#03… If you live in Florida, you can do it almost every day.

Critiquing you means, apparently, that one can’t also be your friend.

Reconcile that in your mind with your upcoming Shabbos. Reflect upon it. And then get back to me.

In fact, looking a little further,
Though shrouded in mystery, this much is known about the Valenzetti Equation: it is a mathematical calculation designed to predict nothing less than the exact number of years left before the extinction of the human race given the current rate of technological advancement.
So go figure its a bunch of crap.

Drama Above Ground as Chilean Miners Await Rescue
Yonni Barrios may have been feeling trapped long before a landslide sealed him inside a Chilean gold mine last month.
As Barrios awaited rescue along with 32 other miners, his wife and his mistress met each other thousands of feet above, at a vigil for the men stuck in the mine. Marta Salinas, 56, says she heard the other woman calling her husband’s name as families gathered to pray for the workers.
Salinas told told The Sun in London she was “horrified” but plans to keep her man. “Barrios is my husband. He loves me, and I am his devoted wife. This woman has no legitimacy,” she told the British paper.
But the other woman, Susana Valenzuela, said she and the trapped miner will stay together. “We are in love,” she told the paper. “I’ll wait for him.”

When someone would carry rumors to his ears - and try living in a small Maine town with two dependent kids, an estranged crack-addicted wife living in Florida, and being a converted Russian Orthodox former monk, and see if you don’t get rumors - he would say that:

Just got this in an email - not sure how accurate it is.
MEXICO IS ANGRY!
The shoe is on the other foot and the Mexicans from the State of Sonora, Mexico do not like it. Can you believe the nerve of these people? It’s almost funny.
The State of Sonora is angry at the influx of Mexicans into Mexico. Nine state legislators from the Mexican State of Sonora traveled to Tucson to complain about Arizona’s new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico. It seems that many Mexican illegals are returning to their hometowns and the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked off.
A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to state that Arizona’s new Employer Sanctions Law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state. At a news conference, the legislators said that Sonora, - Arizona’s southern neighbor - made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools that it will face as Mexican workers return to their hometowns from the USA without jobs or money.
The Arizona law, which took effect Jan. 1, punishes Arizona employers who knowingly hire individuals without valid legal documents to work in the United States. Penalties include suspension of, or loss of, their business license.
The Mexican legislators are angry because their own citizens are returning to their hometowns, placing a burden on THEIR state government. ‘How can Arizona pass a law like this?’ asked Mexican Rep Leticia Amparano-Gamez, who represents Nogales. ‘There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona,’ she said, speaking in Spanish. ‘Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and who were sending money to their families return to their home-towns in Sonora without jobs,’ she said. ‘We are one family, socially and economically,’ she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona.

New Immigration Laws: Read to the bottom or you will miss the message…
1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools.
2. All ballots will be in this nation’s language.
3. All government business will be conducted in our language.
4. Non-residents will NOT have the right to vote no matter how long they are here.
5. Non-citizens will NEVER be able to hold political office.
6. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, or other government assistance programs. Any burden will be deported.
7. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
8. If foreigners come here and buy land… options will be restricted. Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
9. Foreigners may have no protests; no demonstrations, no waving of a foreign flag, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our president or his policies. These will lead to deportation.
10. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be actively hunted & when caught, sent to jail until your deportation can be arranged. All assets will be taken from you.
Too strict?
The Above laws are current immigration laws of MEXICO!

Heh. Don’t worry about it, Obama ordered a surge to go protect the border.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said requests by Arizona law enforcement personnel and Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) for 3,000 National Guard troops along the state’s border with Mexico have been answered so far with 1 percent of that number deployed there this week.
“We have a whopping 30 [National Guard troops] this week that are showing up,” Babeu told CNSNews.com. “It’s less than a half-hearted measure designed to fail.”
But the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has placed 15 signs along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 that links San Diego with Phoenix and Tucson warning travelers of drug cartels and human trafficking operations.
“DANGER – PUBLIC WARNING, TRAVEL NOT RECOMMENDED,” read the signs placed along Interstate 8. “Visitors May Encounter Armed Criminals and Smuggling Vehicles Traveling at High Rates of Speed. Stay Away From Trash, Clothing, Backpacks, and Abandoned Vehicles.”
“BLM Encourages Visitors To Use Public Land North of Interstate 8,” the signs say.
“I think the American people are outraged that we can fight wars half-way around the world, send our nation’s treasury and our most precious resources – our American heroes that serve in the military — and yet here in our own country somehow they believe it’s okay for us not to have a secure border,” Said Sheriff Babeu.
“And that it’s okay to put up signs in my county and parts of America to surrender parts of our country to foreign born criminals,” Babeu added, “warning our own American citizens to stay out.”

How so?
Because the pre-WWI Europeans believed in love, justice, and force, in that order, and when they came to die in agony on Flanders’ fields for nothing and again nothing, except to hold or take or retake a few yards of poisoned ground, within sight of a medieval parish church that had stood there since before their grandfather’s grandfather’s grandfather’s grandfather was born, they took refuge in Mommy.

Would not put much faith in it.
The problem in Mexico right now is that the place is about to become Iraq of 3 years ago with narco gangs playing the role of depraved killers. The economy there sucks worse than here, yet people are leaving the US because they have a family network that will support them there that doesn’t exist here.
The next wave to come across our border could be a new phenomenon for us - refugees crossing a land border. We are used to processing refugees off of planes and boats.

PA Honors Mother for Raising Killers, Human Rights Groups Attend
As direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority began this week in Washington, the PA gave an award to a woman for raising four sons who all murdered Israelis in terrorist attacks.PA Minister of Prisoners Affairs Issa Karake gave the “Shield of Resoluteness and Giving” to the mother of the Abu Hamid brothers, four of whom have been sentenced to life in prison for terrorism, in a ceremony reported by the PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and translated by Palestinian Media Watch. A fifth was killed fighting Israel in 1994.
The woman was referred to by PA media only as Umm Yusef, “mother of Yusef,” and not by her given name. She was also referred to as “Khansa of Palestine,” a reference to the legend of a woman from the days of the beginning of Islam, who rejoiced when her four sons were all killed in battle.
Umm Yusef Abu Hamid’s sons all took part in terrorist attacks in which innocent Israeli civilians were murdered.
Karake praised the Abu Hamid family as “a model of willpower and of the struggle for the independence of Palestine.” He was accompanied by other PA representatives and by representatives of PA “human rights” groups.
I’m sure this will get mentioned at the peace talks very soon.

Bingo!
The corrupt government in Mexico has been completely happy to let those poor people travel right on up into America. Now the government is crumbling and the world economy is in the dumps. Mexico is in a world of hurt.

True, but Mexico does have a nasty history of human-rights abuses towards folks trying to cross the southern border. Also, there are restrictions on non-citizens owning land, although I would point out that this has a somewhat different social significance when you’re Mexico than when you’re the United States.
None of this matters a damn when it comes to the United States of America, justice for all, freedom, opportunity, and possible apple pie.

There’s an old sea story about a ship’s Captain who inspected his sailors, and afterward told the first mate that his men smelled bad.
The Captain suggested perhaps it would help if the sailors would change underwear occasionally. The first mate responded, “Aye, aye sir, I’ll see to it immediately!”
The first mate went straight to the sailors berth deck and announced, “The Captain thinks you guys smell bad and wants you to change your underwear.” He continued, “Pittman, you change with Jones, McCarthy, you change with Witkowski, and Brown, you change with Schultz.”
THE MORAL OF THE STORY:

Well a lot of that history (and people’s feelings about it) are going to have to be shoved aside if the narco civil war escalates.
The US is going to have to figure out a few things, like are we going to turn away war refugees at the border, or are we going to set up camps for them? Are we going to occupy Mexican territory to set up camps in a humanitarian operation? Will we go the Somalia route and bring in forces to attempt to establish a peace? Will bringing in forces be exploited by the narcos as a means of stirring popular hatred towards American by exploiting the generations of propaganda that the government has relied on to mask its own corruption?
The Calderon government may dissolve in a few months. It certainly may simply lose control of the northern states well before that.

Don’t sneak into Mexico unless you don’t mind getting shot.
Ecuadorean survivor urges migrants to avoid Mexico
One of two known survivors of a drug gang’s massacre in northern Mexico of 72 undocumented Central and South American migrants urged others in an interview broadcast Thursday not to attempt the journey to the United States.Luis Freddy Lala Pomavilla, 18, also described being seized by gunmen after entering Mexico from Guatemala and then taken to a house where the migrants were tied up and kept overnight before being shot in the head.
“I’m telling everyone, Ecuadoreans, don’t make the journey any more because the Zetas are killing a lot of people,” Lala said, referring to the drug gang that dominates parts of Tamaulipas state, where he was found last week.
Lala, who was wounded in the neck, wore a brace and part of his face was bandaged. His speech was labored in the four-minute interview with state-run GamaTV.
“There are a lot of bad people who won’t let you through,” he said in the edited interview, which was apparently recorded during his plane flight home from Mexico on Sunday.

Actually, I’m not an expert on this so I am compelled to comment.
Don’t mix wasabi in with your soy, it’s totally Yankee.
Dip the sashimi in the soy, not the rice.
But I like my wasabi in my soy sauce!

The whole crime wave was a GOP lie in AZ.
McCain won his primary. Mission accomplished.
Now the fallout begins.

Yeah, but…a lot of really creepy people think that our “exceptionalism” gives us the right to be creeps. Evil ones. Think about that.
I see that usage, yes. For me it’s about having signed onto a high ideal as a nation. We may not be better than anyone else, but we damn well have to try to be.

Admittedly if I’m ordering sashimi, especially Shiro Maguro or Sake, I’m devouring it sans any sauce or topping. I’m more inclined to use wasabi for nigiri than anything else.

Funny, my wife mixes wasabi into her soy sauce all the time when eating Sushi. I’ll have to tell her despite being born and raised in Japan, she’s been doing it wrong.

I know people that do that….. I prefer to spritz my sushi with soy and put a dab of wasabi on top. Wasabi mixed with soy looks like old guacamole.

I believe in American exceptionalism. This does not mean we are perfect, nor that we never err, just that this nation is exceptional. It is special.
So long as we never completely lose sight of the vision for this nation our Founders had, and the principles of Enlightenment that their formative decisions were based upon, it will remain exceptional.
This.
There is a reason why people from all over the world have risked their lives, their families, and everything they owned and everything they ever knew to come to America since its founding.
That reason is that anyone, no matter who they are, where they’re from, or whatever their social status might have been, has the same opportunities to be what they want to be and do what they want to do.
Everyone has a shot at the American Dream…seeing it through is on the individual.

Yeah it does. I used to do that too in the beginning of my sushi experience. Lately, I’ve really been trying to capture the flavors of the fish so I’ve been avoiding the soy.

I think our nation is better than a whole lot of others out there. The margin may or may not be slim, but it’s there.

Last time I went to Mexico was a three-ring circus. Don’t know when I’ll ever be back…although as I mentioned, my parents have developed this idea about retiring to Baja somewhere. The discovery that foreigners are now allowed to own guns there has further piqued my father’s interest.

Rush has used “American exceptionalism” in past to give cover for some real bullshit…I think we can agree that the term doesn’t mean what he thinks it means.

Yea…. think you have to belong to a gun club…… I would HIGHLY recommend never bringing a firearm into Mexico…..

Hawaii has to be second as an avocado capital, trees are everywhere, multiple species. I have a friend with a Sharwill tree: some grow as big as small cantaloupes and the flavor is just divine. I have no idea if it’s the soil or water (or both), but half of one with a spoon is a meal.

It hasn’t always been a fair playing field here in the States for many, but we continue to move forward in great strides that have surpassed the efforts of many other nations past and present. I believe this makes the US exceptional. Not perfect, just exceptional.

That’s why you squeeze lime in it. But I can’t confirm or deny this, guac does not last 6 hours around me so I can’t tell if you’re lying or not. I’ll take your word for it, this time…

My wife swears that leaving the pit in the guac will keep it green, I disagree…… the only part of the guac that stays green is under the pit.

Yes, it’s to cover the flesh from oxygen, and it keeps the avocado genie in. Also, there’s a Bacon subspecies that allegedly tastes like bacon. The implications are mind bending.

There’s nothing like a hass. All from one tree in LA.
All Hass avocado trees have been grown from seeds (or were grafted from the cuttings) of a single tree which was grown from a seed purchased in 1926 from A. R. Rideout of Whittier, California.
