Fox News: Mosque Investor Tied to Hamas (Not)

Wingnuts • Views: 4,318

Here we go again. The New York branch of Fox News shrieks: Mosque Investor Was Terror Contributor.

Except that, uh, he wasn’t.

An Egyptian who’s contributing some money to Park51 once donated money to the Holy Land Foundation — before 9/11, years before the charity was known to be connected to Hamas, because he thought he was donating money for an orphanage. Like thousands of other people did.

Out of this information, Fox gets the headline that he was a “terror contributor.” And of course, the usual idiot’s chorus of anti-Muslim bigot blogs is all over it.

Ugh. This has become a flat out witch hunt now. Everyone who donates money to the Park51 project is going to have their entire past dug up, distorted, and used against them.

UPDATE at 9/3/10 5:13:14 pm:

The Associated Press report on the latest nontroversy underscores the absurdity of trying to make this connection:

Many other donors to the foundation gave thinking their donations would fund humanitarian programs.

Other people and companies who donated money, equipment or services to the foundation the year Elzanaty gave included NBA star Hakeem Olajuwon, the Microsoft Corp., and a medical equipment company owned by General Electric, according to tax records.

When the foundation’s leaders were indicted, Attorney General John Ashcroft said, the case was not “a reflection on the well-meaning people who may have donated funds to the foundation.”

Jeez, bigots. Chill. This isn't some Wahhabi mega-Mosque! You've been played by a hateful old hag.

Take your Zoloft and get back in the tollbooth, bigots!

Why should the bigots and the Republicans care? it's a winning issue for them. They're not in it for what's best for America, they're in it for themselves.

They want power, even if it's over a smoldering heap of what used to be a great country.

That will include a few Lizards I think. Quite a few ordinary Americans. Wait 'till one of those is a high profile good guy.

Then again, to the FoxNews people, contributing to the Obama campaign means that you give money to Zionist Communist Muslim Nazi Kenyan terrorist organizations.

Or something.

Steve Emerson damaged his reputation when he quickly and publicly suspected Islamic militants in the Murrah Building explosion. He seemed to be careful after that. Until recently. Now it seems he's joined the race to the bottom of the heap of anti-Muslim bigots. Sadly, he has a good reputation still as an analyst, so he will be a big help to Geller and Spencer in spreading the hate.

I see Newt Gingrich has a solution to the issue of private property rights with regards to Park51-make it a national battleground memorial Except that there was no battle there, it isn't actually at Ground Zero, and since when does he think the government can take people's property away to prevent freedom of religion?

Yep -- McCain's been trying to ingratiate himself into the Palin inner circle for quite a while.

So we now have a really sleazy white supremacist palling around with the Palin family.

It's really a brilliantly winning issue. Being anti-Muslim lacks the demographic dangers of being anti-Hispanic. It's much less obviously racist than saying snippy things about African-Americans which, even when you pretend it's just about the NAACP, can come back to bite you. The anti-Gay platform is so 2004.

But anti-Muslim rolls it all into one glorious package. You are a patriot. You are a Christian. You "mistrust" Obama.

There's also something so satisfyingly vague about being anti-Muslim. Does it mean you hate Arabs? Indonesians? Pakistanis? Algerians? Somalians? You don't really know. You don't care. You'll just know it if you see it. Exactly because the US does not have a huge and socially problematic Muslim immigrant population (like much of western Europe), it takes very little thought or courage here to "take a stand against Sharia" or any of that nonsense. And, evidently, the payback from the Right is tremendous.

Olajuwon says he didn't know of terrorism ties

WASHINGTON -- A mosque established and funded by basketball star Hakeem Olajuwon gave more than $80,000 to charities the government later determined to be fronts for the terror groups al-Qaida and Hamas, according to financial records obtained by The Associated Press.

Olajuwon told the AP he had not known of any links to terrorism when the donations were made, prior to the government's crackdown on the groups, and would not have given the money if he had known.

"There is no way you can go back in time," Olajuwon said in a telephone interview from Jordan, where he is studying Arabic. "After the fact, now they have the list of organizations that are banned by the government."

well there's a point in saying that there's a difference between a donation without expecting something in return and an investment intended to make a profit with.
of course they'll run with that. it's not complete bullshit and has enough of a truthy ring to it to work for them.
that donation to the George H.W. Bush fund, on the other hand, is a donation as well and might be more suited to trout-slapping them around with.
either they denounce George H.W. Bush (which I think they'll be loathe to) or their last silly little argument flounders.

there's the downside of not (directly) bashing Fox but then again that makes it less of a "tu quoque" as well so it might be a good thing.

and it's not as if there isn't plenty to bash fox on regardless.

Any charity operated by characters from that neck of the woods has a high probability of being linked by some sort of back channels to the power structure there. Such a connection, when it finally comes to full official light, comes as no more of a surprise than when the wife of the Nigerian president wins the Nigerian state lottery.
