In Madera, California, police and FBI are investigating a firebomb attack against a Planned Parenthood office that has been open for 20 years without incident: Molotov Cocktail thrown at Madera’s Planned Parenthood.

This attack comes one week after a brick was thrown through the window of a local mosque and anti-Muslim signs posted on its walls, by a group using the name “American Nationalist Brotherhood.” One of the signs: “No Temple for the god of terrorism at Ground Zero.”

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Madera’s Planned Parenthood clinic is closed Thursday after someone firebombed it with a Molotov cocktail. The FBI is investigating this case as it continues to search for clues in an attack on a mosque last week on the other side of town.

This Planned Parenthood clinic in Madera has been open for 20 years and officials here say they’ve never seen any kind of violent crime before. Madera Police are investigating the crime but they’re also getting help from the FBI who happen to be investigating another crime in Madera at the same time.

Burnt blinds on the grass and a boarded up window show the damage caused by a firebombing attack early Thursday morning.

“Upon arrival responding officers discovered that Planned Parenthood had been attacked by an unknown person with an incendiary device.” said Madera Police Chief Michael Kime.

Madera Police do not have anyone in custody but a spokesperson with Planned Parenthood says she has a good idea of who it might be. “I believe it’s extremists who are, want to make a statement.” said public affairs director Patsy Montgomery.

Unfortunately, many in the community support this sort of violence and vandalism. Rudolph managed to evade police for five years, and while he was in the wilderness for a lot of that, the FBI thinks he had help.

Call And Response: Religious Right Rallies To Fire Up Base For November Elections

On Sept. 3-4, Lou Engle, the raspy-voiced founder of the neo-Pentecostal group TheCall, will lead the initial event in Sacramento. “Faithful Christians” will gather to pray for the “sanctity of life,” the “sacredness of marriage,” and the “preservation of religious liberty.”

Anti-gay zealot Lou Engle teams up with Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich

With dangerous rhetoric like ”God is an avenger of blood” and “vengeance is mine,” Lou Engle is scheduled to gather thousands of like-minded believers in Sacramento, California, over Labor Day weekend to preach his virulently anti-gay message.

Engle’s political connection to Sam Brownback, Senator from Kansas, prompted the Kansas Democratic Party in May 2010 to urge Brownback to denounce his affiliation with Engle because Engle supported Uganda’s proposed law to execute gays. Now Engle has been endorsed by Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee along with a list of top anti-LGBT religious leaders.

To me, that's the moral relativism that says any criminal inspired by ideology or hatred must be crazy. I don't find that useful, nor do I think it's true. I think that there are people who are ideologically committed to things that an ordinary person may find 'crazy', but that that person is not actually mentally ill in any way. Just full of hate.

re: #34 Boondock St. Bender

i wonder if being filled with enough hate to do something like this could be termed a mental illness.

I don't feel there's anything physically wrong with the structures in their brains. I feel that they have convinced themselves, through the use of their human consciousness, that they are good and whoever it is they hate are evil.

I think that's free will, not insanity. To me, saying that they're mentally ill lets them off easy. When you've got someone like the guy who dove his plane into the ground in Vegas, with notebooks full of incoherent, contradictory rambling, I think that can be called crazy. But I do think there are a lot of people that do terribly violent, horrible things without being the least bit mentally ill.

Yep. It's like when a predominately black church gets firebombed, pretty much everyone zeros in on the KKK. Or when Jewish cemeteries get desecrated, everyone thinks Neo-Nazis did it. When one group has a history of attacking a certain target, that group will come under greater scrutiny than if some other object/persons was attacked.

Bombing clinics, smashing religious building's windows... What right-wing violence? ///

If they want to paint all muslims with a broad brush, then don't be offended when the brush paints back the other way.

Why aren't there strong morally conservative voices coming out and explicitly condemning violence and those that perpetrate it? I feel like the right is becoming a lot like a lot of apologists in the Middle East... "sure suicide bombing is wrong, but you have to understand there's a lot of frustration" or "I don't condemn violence, but I do understand where they're coming from"

It's bullshit. Moral people - and these are the people claiming to be the most moral - need to stand up, state unequivocally that this is unacceptable.

While we respect the rights and opinions of others, we feel that no one should attempt to inhibit the expression of free speech for the large number of 9/11 family members who wish to participate in opposing the construction of this mosque and cultural center. This project represents a gross lack of sensitivity to the 9/11 families and disrespects the memory of all those who were murdered at the WTC both in 1993 and 2001.

Ex-leader of abortion clinic charged in bomb scare

OKLAHOMA CITY - The former director of an Oklahoma abortion clinic has been charged with making false or misleading statements after telling police she'd found a bomb at the facility, according to federal court documents.

Investigators said Linda Meek reported on Aug. 13 that a bomb had been placed in a trash can at Reproductive Services of Tulsa, according to documents filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Tulsa. The clinic, which was bombed twice in 1997, and an adjacent building were evacuated, but a bomb technician determined that a suspicious box in the trash can was not an explosive.

Meek, who left her position with the clinic after the incident, is charged with conveying false or misleading information, according to the documents. Meek, 63, is scheduled to make an initial court appearance in federal court on Thursday. She faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

What a dumb ass. What did she think she would accomplish by doing that?

Some pro-life advocates said they believe Meek may have been trying to mislead authorities and the media, to portray abortion opponents as violent fanatics who will stop at nothing to end the practice.

Republican state Rep. Mike Ritze, who supports pro-life legislation, said the bomb scare is part of a growing trend among abortion activists to represent opponents as violent and dangerous in order to divert public scrutiny from themselves.

"Either she did it maliciously to harm the opposition or is trying to draw attention away from the abortion industry," said Ritze, a family practice physician in Broken Arrow.

I added the emphasis. Really, I think the anti abortionists have enough violent and dangerous loons on their hands without Meek helping them.

Ex-leader of abortion clinic charged in bomb scare

What a dumb ass. What did she think she would accomplish by doing that?

Maybe it's just that that news outlet's recounting of the story is missing some critical details, but that story didn't sound that outrageous. I read it as follows:

The director's clinic had been previously bombed twice. A suspicious box was left in the trash outside and she called the police. Instead of telling them that there was a suspicious box, she told them outright that a bomb had been placed in the trash. After evacuating nearby buildings and investigating the box they determined it was harmless. The police then charged the woman with making inaccurate statements to the police. Local anti-choice groups and politicians used the incident to claim a false-flag conspiracy (instead of the far more likely interpretation, that the director panicked/jumped to conclusions based being subjected to previous acts of terrorism at her place of work).

She died in childbirth with their thirteenth or fourteenth child, and Jahan apparently tried to get himself through his grief (and perhaps guilt) by building a spectacular memorial to her.

When you're a Mughal emperor, your interpretation of 'spectacular' is bound to get out of hand. The end result is pretty much considered the absolute peak of hybrid Persian/Indian architectural tradition.

re: #13 Obdicut

Why do you think the person who tried to burn down the clinic is insane?

Evil is habitually medicalized in today's world. Perhaps, in some sense, there is a medical side to it. This kind of behavior does not serve to advance the perpetrator's own interests. Unlike holding up mom&pop stores for the contents of the cash register, it doesn't even serve to provide cash for another few days of drugs.

So we call the perpetrator "sick". But it's s kind of sickness that doesn't really have a medical answer. One cannot cure a person of the habit of thinking along the lines of the thinking that led them to do it, at least, not with any therapy other than the "aversive therapy" we call prison. And usually, not even that.

The perpetrators almost never acts out of home-grown conviction. They have been groomed for the deed by indoctrination. Religious fanatics who are all too sane understand very well that it is not in their own interest to be the one to go amok, or sneak around setting fires and leaving forensic evidence behind which can be walked back them. Instead, they recruit in the fringe church or mosque or the fringe environmentalist camp. They speak in guarded tones when the audience is large, and more explicitly when it's small and the recruit has been screened carefully to weed out undercover agents.

The frequency of overt misdeeds is the best measure we have of the extent of the underlying covert recruiting. It's also an inverse measure of the effectiveness with which the government penetrates such groups, or even cares to try, and an inverse measure of how well our mainstream society matches people to productive social roles.

Sounds like she panicked and reported it as a bomb. Maybe in order to get someone there quickly. Charging her with making a false report, from the details in this article anyway, seems to be way overboard.

The clinic had been bombed twice before. She had a good reason to be nervous about it. Unless there's more to the story, this isn't a case of deliberately making a false bomb report.

I make my donations to a few things, but Catholic Charities in BR does an excellent job, and gets most of my support.

The most recent project: An apartment complex which will house families displaced and still trying to recover from Katrina and other storms. For many participants, there will be no rent or utility payments required for year, while they work and try to save money toward getting back on their feet. Participation includes access to budgeting, life skills, home ownership and nutrition classes; some participants may be required to enroll in job services, counseling or other programs.

“Studies show that almost half the families for whom it took more than a year to find suitable housing are still struggling to create stable homes,” Aguillard said. The Families First Program of CCDBR will assist these families by providing affordable housing to eligible families for an interim period while the parents improve their job skills, complete their education and prepare themselves to find and afford market-rate housing. “Everyone who left New Orleans after Katrina – from the richest to the poorest – needed help. We will continue to help those who demonstrate a commitment to achieving self-sufficiency and helping themselves,” Aguillard said.

He seems to be pretty typically aware of image opportunities and thinking about how to capitalize on them. So I'm not surprised that he's been able to leverage it, he seems to have an entrepreneurial kind of mindset abut the whole thing. As such, I don't know if "moron" is the right word to use there.

I agree... the word moron should be left to describe anyone who actually watches the show and is entertained by this train wreck of human specimens.

Tell me about how you watch the Jersey Shore? Drop ten pegs.

There are only 20 pegs.

I don't necessarily begrudge this guy for figuring out a way to cash in on being an insufferable douchebag, but it absolutely kills me that there's a market for it.

Work... work... work... have a 5 1/2 hour coming up. Really strange, last night, I thought we would get SLAMMED considering the holiday... nope, really slacked off about 7:30pm... but the highway in front of the store... bumper to bumper, people going west to go camping, last fling of the summer.

Wonder if it will be a little more busy tonight, locals and stuff, getting ready for Monday cookouts.

Thank goodness I already live in paradise... I don't have to travel up here to get away to the mountains.

How many pegs, and in which direction, do I move if I tell you about watching pr0n? And does the inclusion of pie in said pr0n affect the score?

"The Taj Mahal was built by the Emperor Khurram for his wife
Mumtaz who was maximum beautiful woman in the whole world. When
she died, the Emperor decided to build this five star hotel for
everyone who wanted to visit her tomb...but he died in- in
fifteen eighty-seven, before any of the rooms were built. Or the lifts. The swimming pool, however, as you can see was completed on schedule in top
class fashion.

Tourist: "It says nothing of this in the guide book."

JAMAL: "With respect, Madam, the guide book is written by a bunch of
lazy, good-for-nothing, Indian beggars."

I loved that movie.

Yeah, I should have waited for it to be a bit cooler, I usually do.
And yes, our yard is the same way. But, oh, so green! I love it.

Our's is sort of green, brown and yellow from too much water.

The money to be made is in selling the lifestyle. Mind you, it's a crap lifestyle to be selling, but Ed Hardy has already proven that the market is there and that it can be monetized. The method of selling lifestyles whole-cloth is pretty well established - think Donald Trump, Martha Stewart, etc. All make themselves the poster child for a certain self image, and then capture a piece of the action selling the stuff people think they need to have that self image.

It may be the case that people who buy their lifestyle "off the rack" as it were, are generally tasteless, so any lifestyle that somebody's going to sell will be inevitably odious.

I saw part of a marathon. Doesn't take much to know everything you need to know about it. It's an excellent anthropological documentary, overall.

In the first place, you don't properly study anthropology by telling your subjects that they are going to be on TV... just saying.

It's unusual for Republicans to take the blame for it, though.

Today's Republicans don't consider the Rockefeller Republicans to be "real" Republicans anymore.

They're from New York, y'know. They're hardly even real Americans. They're communists (just like Eisenhower), you can tell by the murals in the Rockefeller Center.

He names the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation as two "so-called republican organizations" which donate millions to PP as part of an agenda of genocide to wipe out the African-American population.

Let us remember that teabugging smear merchant James O'Keefe's first race baiting stunt was calling up Planned Parenthood to make a donation with the specification that his money be used to 'abort black babies'.
