Today’s Highlight in History:
On Sept. 6, 1970, Palestinian guerrillas seized control of three U.S.-bound jetliners. Two were later blown up on the ground in Jordan, along with a London-bound plane hijacked on Sept. 9; the fourth plane was destroyed on the ground in Egypt. (In all cases, the hostages were removed prior to the blasts, and there was no loss of life.)
On this date:
In 1837, the Oberlin Collegiate Institute of Ohio went co-educational.
In 1860, social activist Jane Addams, who became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, was born in Cedarville, Ill.
In 1901, President William McKinley was shot and mortally wounded by anarchist Leon Czolgosz (CHAWL’-gawsh) at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. (McKinley died eight days later; he was succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt. Czolgosz was executed in Oct. 1901.)
In 1909, American explorer Robert Peary sent a telegram from Indian Harbor, Labrador, announcing that he had reached the North Pole five months earlier.
In 1916, the first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, was opened in Memphis, Tenn., by Clarence Saunders.
In 1939, the Union of South Africa declared war on Germany.
In 1948, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands was inaugurated as queen, two days after the abdication of her mother, Queen Wilhelmina.
In 1966, South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd (fehr-FOORT’) was stabbed to death by an apparently deranged page during a parliamentary session in Cape Town.
In 1978, James Wickwire and Louis Reichardt became the first Americans to reach the summit of Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second-highest mountain (after Mount Everest).
In 1985, all 31 people aboard a Midwest Express Airlines DC-9 were killed when the Atlanta-bound jetliner crashed just after takeoff from Milwaukee’s Mitchell Field.

Evangelist preaches against Islam near 9/11 site
NEW YORK — An Internet evangelist from Florida has begun holding services near ground zero to preach against Islam as debate continues over plans for a nearby Muslim community center.
Bill Keller has gained a following through his Liveprayer.com website, and has promised to establish a “9/11 Christian Center” to counter what he referred to Sunday as “the lies of Islam.”
Keller says developers have a right to build the Muslim center but the plan to locate it near the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is “in poor taste.”
He began preaching Sunday at the New York Marriott Downtown Hotel, his temporary headquarters. His center is to open by Jan. 1. Early plans for the Islamic center call for a 500-seat auditorium, prayer space and Sept. 11
memorial.

I agree this is a bad idea and does not bode well for the future.
That said the last sentence is really weird…
“Early plans for the Islamic center call for a 500-seat auditorium, prayer space and Sept. 11”
I know they probably meant opening on that date, but it ends up reading like someone said
“I’d like a coke, small fries and a Holocaust” more or less…

Of course they don’t care, he’s playing all the right notes. Calls Islam a “cult,” spews hatred and suspicion about Muslims, and all the other minorities that the Right despises. They can’t bring themselves to criticize him, but defending him with the “right to freedom of religion” argument would make them look like hypocrites. The police bomb squad took the grenade away for demolition after determining it was a World War II-style inert grenade. The police report did not list the type of gun in the box or the quantity of marijuana.

re: #64 BigPapa
The idea that humans have prospered because of exchange of ideas is an old one, and a reasonable argument can be made for it.
Indeed, the arguments for free trade and free movement of people (immigration) are built in part on this idea.
There are some other ideas that have been proposed that I’ve come across. One is that H. sapiens flourishes because of our artistic drives (singing, dancing, but especially our visual arts.)
Also, that it all could be a fluke, so to speak, as a result of the vagaries of climate change that left H. sapiens as the apex predator on the planet.

BBC accused of letting Iranian regime off the hook re stoning:
In the live debate, they managed to interview Suhaib Hassan from the Islamic Sharia Council defending stoning and someone from Tehran saying she faces execution for murdering her husband but somehow there was no time in the debate for me.
Even the presenter, Susanna Reid, said stonings were rare and that none had taken place since the 2002 moratorium! In fact 17 people have been stoned since the moratorium; also there are court documents provided by her lawyer specifying her stoning sentence for adultery. BBC had all this information. Without providing evidence to the contrary, BBC Sunday Live took as fact the regime’s pronouncements on her case. They failed to mention that the man charged with her husband’s murder is not being executed and that the trumped up murder charges are an attempt by the regime to silence the public outcry and kill Sakineh. As Sakineh herself has said: “they think they can do anything to women.”

He argues against the 99ers:
Generous social welfare benefits were another factor in sapping the European work ethic. But the United States is moving in the same direction. President Obama recently signed a bill extending unemployment insurance benefits, allowing those out of work to collect for up to 99 weeks.
There is something to be said for providing extra help to people who lose their jobs during hard times. But there is an unintended side effect: longer spells of unemployment. In the past year, the average duration has increased from 25 weeks to 34 weeks—far above the average peak duration of 21 weeks during previous recessions over the past 65 years.
Unemployment is not welfare.
Then he blames the increase of the Federal minimum wage which rose to $7.25/hour last year. This by the way was a law signed by President Bush:
Then there is the increase in the federal minimum wage that took place last year. In the teeth of the downturn, the government required companies to boost their pay floor to $7.25 an hour, an increase of 70 cents. The intention may have been humane, but the effect was like tossing a struggling swimmer an anchor.
Anyone in business that can’t afford to pay their workers a piddly sum of $7.25 per hour shouldn’t be in business. The higher wages go the less people need government assistance. The reality is that people cannot survive very well even at $7.25/hour.

More from the Reason blog:
A sad example is the payroll tax, which impedes job creation in two ways. First, it imposes an extra cost on employers for hiring workers—a cost they don’t incur if they decide to replace workers with machinery. Second, it reduces the take-home pay of those hired, making it less attractive for them to work.
Payroll taxes have not increased. Unless he’s arguing again payroll taxes altogether. He does not make that clear. Businesses take out payroll taxes from the employee’s wages. They do however pay for 1/2 of the FICA/SS taxes. Those have not increased either.

Right. Let’s see 7.25 per hour is $1,255.70 a month or about $966.90 after 23 percent in taxes (total). Better live in the boondocks with that salary. Don’t get sick and don’t go to the dentist.

The minimum wage was never meant as a “living wage”
It was meant for the exact purpose it should be for. Entry level, unskilled part time (think McDonalds,,,a community pool summer life guard job ,,a landscaper trainee,,, etc)
Yes, I understand that in this time of job uncertainty some people have to take what they can get (See ; WALTER)
But to chide a small business owner for having a few entry level/ mop-up/ trainee type of jobs is ill advised, imho
I owned several small businesses back years ago, and those types of jobs (at that pay level) were necessary and often led to higher paying full time jobs with me after an apprenticeship

Anyone in business that can’t afford to pay their workers a piddly sum of $7.25 per hour shouldn’t be in business. The higher wages go the less people need government assistance. The reality is that people cannot survive very well even at $7.25/hour.
Again, he has nothing wrong with the concept, but he has a problem with the timing. As he said, “The very worst moment to raise the minimum wage is during a period of economic stagnation…”

But to chide a small business owner for having a few entry level/ mop-up/ trainee type of jobs is ill advised, imhoI owned several small businesses back years ago, and those types of jobs (at that pay level) were necessary and often led to higher paying full time jobs with me after an apprenticeship
Exactly. I started out working a summer job at minimum wage, and as I progressed and gained more experience to work at more advanced positions, my paycheck grew in turn.

I don’t get minimum wage… I don’t get over 10 dollars, but it’s close. My store is not a union store, but most of the stores in my division (141 stores) are union, and all the stores follow the basic union contract rules, since it makes it easier to be following a single accounting and payroll model.

You know what a COLA is right? It’s not 1979 anymore and right now we’re dealing with 2010 prices which have skyrocketed over the past decades including rent which is through the roof. Anyway, accepting a job at $7.25/hour is taking what one can get. Most businesses pay around $8.00/hour for entry level or labor work.

The increase in minimum wages hits the mom-and-pop businesses much more than large chains. They’re able to spread that additional cost around where a small business has to find some way to cover those additions while still remaining competitive and profitable.
What do you have against small business?/

Actually,,, they kinda do
If I have to raise what I charge for my product or service to cover the higher wages I have to pay, more likely than not the consumer is going to buy less of my product thereby negating the extra I have to charge, so my bottom line stays the same, or worse, decreases because I am selling less due to the higher price

Nice chart. And if you look at the bottom you’ll find:
Social Security (FICA): The Social Security wage base for 2010 is $106,800. There is no wage base limit for Medicare. The Social Security tax rate will remain 7.65% for employees and employers. It is composed of 6.2% for OASDI (Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance) and 1.45% for Medicare (Hospital Insurance).
So that’s a total of 17.65 percent for married couples. Or, 22.65 percent for single persons — which rounds out to 23 percent as I stated.

Robert Stacy McCain put up another laughable post trying to defend himself against the indisputable charges that he’s a racist piece of shit. His defense amounts to this: “I have lots of friends who think I’m not a racist.” Yes, that’s it. He doesn’t even attempt to explain his many racist and neo-Confederate statements, because he simply can’t.
And of course, his lying post was immediately linked all over the right wing blogosphere, including by Glenn Reynolds.
Get a load of this crap:
Hate is against my religion. If I am commanded to pray for my enemies, why then should I hate entire races of people whom I’ve never met and who have done me no harm?
If I do not hate, neither will I fear. There are important stories I need to be covering, and I’ve got better things to do than to seek vengeance on a bunch of pissant “progressives” whose only claim to fame is their vicious obsession with the Palins. I’m past caring what such people think of me, but if I am called on to fight in defense of the good name of the Palins, I’m prepared again to invoke the war oath of Clan Cameron:

Robert Stacy McCain put up another laughable post trying to defend himself against the indisputable charges that he’s a racist piece of shit. His defense amounts to this: “I have lots of friends who think I’m not a racist.” Yes, that’s it. He doesn’t even attempt to explain his many racist and neo-Confederate statements, because he simply can’t.
And of course, his lying post was immediately linked all over the right wing blogosphere, including by Glenn Reynolds.
Get a load of this crap:
I don’t think anyone with half a brain gives credence to anything RSMcC says anymore.

I don’t know about that. I’ve been thinking about that video and I’m not sure what to think about it. Was he just campaigning with Dem talking points to appease his base? I suppose it could have been more Machiavellian then I suspected. Perhaps he evolved over time due to the Red Scare hysteria and propaganda? That was from 1948 and the Red Scare went into full swing after 1950. That had the same affect on people as did the Tea Party (and the election of Obama) or even 9/11 which led many people to do an about face politically and changed their views to acomodate peer pressures.

The locals loathed it. Apparently it used to be quite the thing for drunken uni types to decorate it.
the geniuses at Stirling responded by….putting a GIANT CAGE around it to prevent further vandalism.
this succeeded in pissing off everyone not already pissed off by it, because it now looked like a monument….commemorating Wallace’s execution by the English.
Consequently the statue has now been removed from Stirling and is now in hiding somewhere off in the depths of Scotland.

The increase in minimum wages hits the mom-and-pop businesses much more than large chains. They’re able to spread that additional cost around where a small business has to find some way to cover those additions while still remaining competitive and profitable.
What do you have against small business?/
I know a lot of people who run small businesses, and I can’t think of a one that pays minimum wage.

Heh. Some more detail on this: Someone smashed it’s face in with a hammer, prompting the authorities to build a special cage around it. Sometime later, after further attacks and criticism, it was returned to the artist who made it.
Note: the term “Braveheart” is actually the traditional soubriquet of Robert the Bruce, not William Wallace. So many levels of fail going on…
This all started in the late 90’s. I think the whole affair may have gotten to Mr Gibson, and in some way precipitated his subsequent ongoing meltdown.
