San Antonio Mosque Vandalized

US News • Views: 4,611

Here’s another anti-Muslim hate crime that Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer and the Bigot Brigade can claim they have nothing to do with — this time on the hallowed ground of San Antonio, Texas: San Antonio mosque vandalized amid national tensions over NYC mosque.

A San Antonio mosque has been hit several times in the past week by vandals.

Tensions are already running high with the mosque controversy in New York City. Now, the Islamic Center of San Antonio has become a target.

Vandals spray-painted symbols and letters on the facade of the new building.

Members of the Islamic center near the Medical Center in northwest San Antonio said they came out from prayers Sunday to find the cars in the parking lot vandalized with graffiti and anti-Islamic messages.

Police are investigating the incidents.

UPDATE at 9/6/10 7:01:28 pm:

A few hours later, we have an update: San Antonio mosque rules out hate crime as root of graffiti incident.

SAN ANTONIO — As the anniversary of Sept. 11 approaches, tensions are running high, including here in San Antonio, where a mosque has been targeted several times over the weekend by vandals.

Nadia Ramdass of KENS 5 spoke with the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, D.C., which is not treating the incident as a hate crime due to the non-offensive nature of the graffiti.

They are working with local police and FBI, however, to ensure they’re correct.

Vandals spray painted symbols and letters inside and outside of the mosque, located near the Medical Center in northwest San Antonio on Sunday.

Members of the Islamic Center were already targeted by vandals on Saturday, too. They came out from prayers to find the cars in the parking lot sprayed with graffiti.

Members of the mosque believe the incidents could be gang related.

So far, local law enforcement has no leads.

No better than people who would burn a cross in someone's front yard.

This also won't end well.... except that it might if this behavior forces America as a whole to confront what might be a Anti-Islamic undercurrent growing within our culture....

This makes me so angry. The fact we don't have a loud outcry against this in our country just proves we aren't a Christian nation.

What symbols? What letters? Letters and symbols? Why don't they say what those were?

I'd go into full-on rant mode about this, but I don't have time. Grad school calls, since I have to go and finish some work for tomorrow.

I'm just wondering what part of the Sacred Monument of Ground Zero™ is in San Antonio, and why a mosque there is harming anyone. I don't get it at all.

Why should anyone release this information? To encourage copycat crimes? To not be able to link similar crimes together, should more vandalism occur?

Our local big Islamic Center is located right by I-75 north of town, and I drive by it about once a week at various hours. I've noticed that there is always at least one car in the parking lot, a smart move IMO. Vandals and such are curiously less active when they think there's no one around to spot them or catch them. Not that cars in the lot stopped the SA vandals.

Why, it's in the same town as the Sacred Monument of the Alamo! That's proof that San Antonio should be reserved for Christians only, I say!

(Never mind that the Mexicans who stormed the Alamo were also Christians, if you consider Catholics to be Christian)

I would think it would help identify the group. Is this the same group as Charles reported the other day? Is it the Nazi symbol? A cross? Gang symbols? What? Something unique that other people can be looking out for in other places like our own neighborhoods?

Letters? I mean, random letters that mean nothing or actual words? It seems odd to state "symbols and letters" without some kind of a clarification.

Damn near everyone died at The Alamo. It's value is more symbolic than anything, since it enabled the Texians to finally defeat Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto.

Of course, the same idiots who vandalized this mosque probably think the Alamo was a great military victory or something. =P

Two possibilities: 1) the inscriptions were not printable in a newspaper that might be seen by small children, or 2) the perpetrators were illiterate and their message could not be deciphered.

My political fantasy--A talks trash about B. B says, "Here's my response--'F**k you, a**hole.'" The End. But no, both sides have to keep talking, bitching, moaning, charging, whining...

If the President is taking it to the Republicans, in this case good for him. A little backbone goes a long way if (a) you're a Democrat, a member of the party not exactly known for their toughness, and (b) the opposition is as awful as the Repubs have been lately.

And I'm not even a fan of President Obama.

[Link: www.kens5.com...]

On the surface, some of the graffiti appears to be gang "tagging", by spraypainting of initials on the building. However, tagging typically doesn't include spraypainting on automobiles - they only hit buildings and other stationary objects.
Also, there were many places painted with anti-Muslim slurs, and other forms of vandalism, which would not coincide with gang "tagging" activity.

It is the primeval "Us vs. Them" scenario and there are plenty of people who buy into it, just set up one side & you'll have takers on the other. The particular conflict being discussed here is the militant type of islam vs "others" although plenty of groups not just islam have engaged in that.

I don't think we will see the end of this behavior anytime soon.

In fact the Democrats vs. Republicans "gig" is tainted with it too.

Find a passion first then use the MBA as a means to partake in it. I just spent 8 years of my career working for somebody who got a USC MBA: essentially, the last year before he finished, he looked for a cool new industry to start a company in and chose mine. He's done OK, but not that great.

Any reports of 'tagging' and gang affiliations need to be confirmed by police gang units: they'll tell really quick whether it's the real deal, poseurs, or just junk.

I am coming in late so sorry if it has been mentioned already, but when I hear about this Quran burning stuff I can't help but think that I wouldn't want to be serving in someplace like Afghanistan & have to deal with the fall out, if you know what I mean.

It's not good PR, although I comfort myself with the thought that if people like this weren't doing it, our enemies would probably make it up anyway.

General Petraeus said much the same thing today ("unhelpful" was his mild term), causing lots of armchair soldiers on Weaselzippers & other hate sites to jump about shrieking "Go on, burn those Korans! Just let them [bigoted word]s try anything with me! I've got a great big gun in my closet!"

Yes, well, I may or may not have a great big gun in my closet myself, but I live in Northern California.

My brother-in-law, OTOH, is in Afghanistan. He also has a great big gun, but so do a lot of other people I'd just as soon not have anything to be madder at him about. Ya know?

[Link: online.wsj.com...]

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Hundreds of Afghans attended a demonstration in Kabul on Monday to protest the plans of Florida pastor Terry Jones, who has said he will burn the Quran on Sept. 11.

I trust you won't wind up like most of the MBAs I knew in my last corporate job. Pompous, self-impressed, jargon-spouting douchebags, overpaid to be "pigeon execs" who make a lot of noise, crap all over the place, and fly away.

Digital media sounds interesting, but I admit I have no idea what's involved.

Still, interesting and brilliant insights in his work.

Two seagulls are flying over the sports stadium of your choice.

One says to the other, "You know, there are 50,000 people sitting down there."
