Should be fun to see Sister Sarah and her followers dig herself in deeper as they continue to oppose this man….

You know the drill. They’ll always find something to complain about. In this case it might be “it’s a little late for Rauf to say this now.” Either that or they’ll just claim he’s lying. Unless of course this approved by someone at the New York Post — that might gain some traction with the walnuts.

6 Stan the Demanded Plan  Wed, Sep 8, 2010 6:58:24pm

I certainly hope she lets him talk about his life story - he wants to tell - and if I recall, it’s pretty transformational.

7 HappyWarrior  Wed, Sep 8, 2010 6:58:29pm

They’ll claim that he’s lying. There is nothing Imam Rauf can do that will satsify these people save burn a Quran on national television and call Christ his savior.

8 Jetpilot1101  Wed, Sep 8, 2010 6:58:36pm

Correct me if I am wrong but this Imam may be the first Muslim leader to publicly condemn Hamas for their cowardly acts of terror. For crying out loud folks (and I mean the right wing opposition) can we please, pretty please, with sugar on top give this man the benefit of the doubt? Haven’t we all been waiting for a public Muslim figure to do exactly what this man has done? Well, here he is America, let’s stand behind him and acknowledge the courageous stand he has taken against the extremists of his religion.

9 Political Atheist  Wed, Sep 8, 2010 6:58:54pm

I learned a lot of the best things in my personal philosophy from men like the Imam. Oh BTW just had quite a set to with the Mom in law who refused to even listen to him. Basically because of her Beck induced ODS. This will have to be a forbidden subject from now on with the in laws and my own father. I find this really hard to deal with. I’m losing respect for family. Damn.

‘Yes’
‘Did you talk to all the 9/11 families?’
‘Uh… no, not to all the 9/11 families.’

I think they’re responding to this. It’s a little ambiguous and confusing, these two points: From the CNN transcript:

Updated, 9:21 p.m.] Rauf said that if he knew how controversial the project would be, he “never would have done this - not have done something that would create more divisiveness.”

However, he said he is convinced he shouldn’t move the center now because “our national security now hinges on how we negotiate this, how we speak about it and what we do.”

Many of our ancestors and I include mine among them came from backgrounds where their religion or belief system wasn’t popular to the establishment. The thing is, the bodies were pulverized, so pinning down a zone of where they could not be found isn’t really feasible, and it would spread far beyond this particular site.

I get your point and agree with it but at this point the process has started. To not do these things are to give into the logic you (and I) disagree with.

In the case of burning the Quran, it specifically is to incite foreign extremists. The consequences of such an act are net result negative.

And exactly what difference does this make? Are you saying that, with the all of the pulverized human remains that were scattered to the four winds on 9/11, Imam Rauf not be allowed to build 2 blocks away from Ground Zero? Not with a TV card dude!

Dead thread, but…

I refuse to pay a monthly fee for commercial television. If they’re selling tons of ad slots, they don’t need my money to watch they’re crap.

You can get over the air TV on your TV card.

I used to when I had one.

True story. I hooked my vcr up to my TV card and would watch pr0n in a small window on the occasions when I worked from home. Damn I love America!

At 2:29 in the video linked here, Rauf says what I have been saying for weeks. He shows more compassion with 7 simple words than everyone who as attacked me here.
I will say it once again, as I did way back in the begining, not all who oppose the location are bigots.

The quote:

“I understand the sensitivity of the people…”

Which is all I ever said.

You don’t have to be, er, “active” in order to appreciate the beauty of pr0n.

And now Bill Hicks with the weather. (NSFW)

Let me get this straight:

1. Building a Culture Center that has a mosque in it 2 block from Ground Zero is desecrating “Holy Ground” because of the ashes and remains of the victims of 9/11.

2. Building the Freedom Tower that will have shopping and offices AT Ground Zero is NOT desecrating “Holy Ground” even though it is the spot where ashes and remains of victims of 9/11 are.

I guess I don’t get it.

Let the Imam build the dag gone Cultural Center and get off HIS lawn!

PS>
Wish I were going to be in Gainsville on 9/11. I am a Christian, but I’d burn a Bible just to spite that despicable piece of crap that calls himself a “pastor” in a heart beat. I think it’s quite ironic that burning a Holy Book is the proper way of disposing of one. Does he realize that yet?

Number 1 should have read:
Building a Culture Center that has a mosque in it 2 block from Ground Zero is desecrating “Holy Ground” because of the ashes and remains of the victims of 9/11, might, but most likely are not there. At least not the remains.

1) America was founded on the principal that people should be allowed to practice their religion freely.

Principle, not principal.

re: #177 EmmmieG

Well, they were Christians.

The Puritans who wanted freedom to worship.

The Quakers who wanted freedom to worship.

The Catholics who wanted freedom to worship.

Without being burnt, or given a religious oath test, or driven out of town.

(Then there was Georgia, which was full of debtors, but we can discuss that later.)

And Connecticut and Rhode Island, which were founded by people who wanted the freedom to worship and live differently than the “freedom-loving” Puritans.

I think that Rauf needs to answer some questions about that tenement/slum he owns in Jersey City. This kinds of issues can sink any positive feelings people have about this issue.

Also, did anybody watch the Anderson Cooper roundtable after the interview? They interviewed this construction crew chief named Andy Sullivan (weird coincidence) who is steadfastly opposed to the center. Here’s a link about his background and position. At first, I thought this guy was solely motivated by grief and bitterness over the attack. Then I checked out his website, www.bluecollarcorner.com, and it turns out he’s a loony right-wing Glenn Beck acolyte who’s been posting for a year now. There’s a nice little post there regarding his view of Hispanic immigrants, and he constantly refers to the president as Barack Hussein Obama (emphasis on Hussein). Apparently Anderson Cooper didn’t bother to check this out and question him on this.

re: #139 tradewind

She doesn’t think that there are ’ bodies buried under the building ‘. She is referring to the idea, not an unreasonable one, that there continue to be bits and fragments of human remains found around the area.
The thing is, the bodies were pulverized, so pinning down a zone of where they could not be found isn’t really feasible, and it would spread far beyond this particular site.

And therefore nothing should ever be built there?

Or only community centers for brown people?

No.

He needs to answer the same exact questions anyone else has to answer to build a building in downtown Manhattan. No more, no less.

Some video for those of us without tv…
Imam: Islamic center location a national security issue
This is the same argument made about burning the Quran. We can’t burn the Quran because it might anger Muslim terrorists overseas. We have to build the mosque or it will anger Muslim terrorists overseas. I’m all in favor of building the mosque but I really think it’s a very bad idea the start basing our freedoms on avoid offense to people who are always going to be offended. US casualties will not rise or fall over what happens to a mosque or a Quran in the US. It makes no fucking difference and I se no need to kiss the asses of violent foreign extremists.

The imam’s remarks here have elevated the argument to a game of chicken — and that’s a game he will lose.

When I saw the interview I cringed when the Imam said that had he known what would have happened he never would have done it. Then, he went on to justify building it on the basis of the reaction in the Muslim world. I agree, it was a terrible mistake. Firstly, it opens up the counter argument, that we should be wary of the fact that radicals overseas will view the building of the Mosque as “conquered land” and the coming “Islamification” of the USA. The reality is that the case should be fought on the basis of American liberties. Full Stop. When American lament the internment of Japanese during the WW, they do not do so because of how it was perceived in Japan or the rest of the world, they lament the shame of having acted out of fear and contrary to their values and the values of the country. The Imam is right. If they don’t build it, it will be read as a war on Islam in parts of the Muslim world. But that is not the basis on which it should be justified.

I wish I’d thought to drop by last night after the interview and round table because I was pissed. I did write CNN and tell them it was the worst interview ever.

I thought Soledad did a terrible job. She kept interrupting him and what really started getting me pissed was she kept bringing up the 71% poll, as if we govern by polls. Can you imagine what the numbers would have been like when they passed the Civil rights bill?

I thought that CNN looked like FNC lite last night and I was totally disgusted.
