Appeasing this psychotic freak would set a terrible precedent. I’m amazed they’re even considering this; but it’s a measure of how seriously the administration regards the threat of worldwide violence.

It also appeases the violent Islamists. The hysteria over this incident has been blown way out of proportion.
The Quran burning deserves maybe some local media attention or a passing mention on a national show. Getting the President involved is just ridiculous.
Obama's administration seems to have issues with knowing when to step in, and when to stay above the fray. First that police officer thing, then his changing positions on the mosque. . .
Why legitimize this group by administration acknowledgement (even if that acknowledgement comes in the form of condemnation) of their activities?
This thing is playing out in the worst way possible. The disproportional amount of attention devoted to this indecent creates a direct challenge to Muslim extremists to respond with violence. The expectation and panic over the possible violent response will make the extremists look weak if they can't live up to expectations.
Answered my own question from the last thread. This idiots other website was also hosted by Rackspace. Since I still can't connect to it, I suspect they shut it down as well.

The truth is, opposition to the Quran burning is getting even more press than the event itself.
That ought not be lost on those who rightfully are upset at Jones and his pissant church.
Sadly though, it will. Those intent on carrying violence will do just that, choosing to see only the actions of a very few versus the sentiment of the vast majority of Americans.
The ugly act of Quran burning will not create any radicals. It will only bring out those who already subscribe to violence as a form of political expression.
After the Paris riots, publishing of the infamous Mohammad cartoons and the Bhutto assassination, entire populations went on a wild rampage. Hordes of out of control people caused massive destruction to private and public property.
The destruction of property is not a display of anger, disagreement, mourning or courage. It is an unequivocal display of political, moral and social immaturity. It is also a public acknowledgment of the complete lack of a mature and healthy value system.
That does in any way justify the Quran burning event. As ugly and as repulsive as that may be and notwithstanding the proper condemnations, context is in order.
NPR's Greg Allen reports that the would-be Quran-burning preacher in Gainesville, Fla., is offering a quid pro quo, according to the Islamic cleric who met with the preacher Wednesday and was to meet with him again on Thursday.
Terry Jones the preacher says he'll reconsider the Quran burning if plans are ditched to build an Islamic Center near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan

The act in and of itself won't create radicals: it will create a propaganda tool for the recruiters to manipulate their recruits. It will be very powerful for them. This is what enables the cycle to continue, helps create future terrorists in a few years time or push others on the brink in a much shorter time frame.

Welcome to our evil media
People love to hate on the government, the media is worse, less accountable, less responsible and more willing to just outright destroy peoples' lives for a buck
Get the idiot provocateur on illegal burning, fire hazard, relasing CO2, littering, < insert here additional charges >! In dry CA it would work. Don't know about wet Florida.
well, Palin was a VP candidate, I'm talking about retard nobodies in the south with a congregation smaller than my waist size who can pretty much cause worldwide discord and put Americans in danger with stunts
This is an attention whore who found a way to get a lot of attention.
I can understand wanting to give him some "positive attention" rather than letting him get "negative attention". But the same problem with indulging terrorists and thugs comes into play - when you reward the behavior it does not go away. It comes back again and again.
If the moron goes through with it. the next time he does it it won't get as much attention. Then he has a choice - escalate or go away. i can't think of an escalation that doesn't involve an unlawful action, but I am not a creative zealot.

It's the first group that matters most.
The recruits you mention have already been radicalized.
Their commitment to violence is already part of their make up.
Anyone else find it ironic that a man was nearly killed a few weeks ago for being Muslim but the possibility of legally burning a book is a matter of international panic?
Meanwhile, not to be outdone, the shits from the Westboro Baptist Church are going after the "original enemy" - Jews:
The group held several signs, with such slogans as, “Your rabbi is a whore” and “Mourn for your sins.” They sang parodies of famous songs, including “Hey Jew,” based off the Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” and a remake of “God Bless America” called “God Hates America.”

Most people don't care too much about other people.
The danger is validating and giving press to Jones: he has the power to get the Pres to pay attention to him. The Pres is reacting to him.
If there is a way to get out in front of this but not give Jones what he wants (coverage = power), then that's the play.
I think the Pres comments on the issue but in an informal context like his off the cuff this AM. This is where guys like Rauf come in... and some Christian leaders with him.

He would not have much power if he were ignored.
Wasn't there some moron here years back who posted a video of him shooting a quuran with an automatic weapon?

the media makes money off this, there's no way they won't cover this
war sells, fury sells, bigotry sells, fear sells, destruction sells, death sells
Let no one doubt that this bastard would do the same thing with Talmuds if the flavor of the day were anti-Semitism. Which it would be, if he and his ilk got their way with Muslims.

Jones is enjoying his 15 minutes.
Christ couldn't talk him down at this point.
Ironically, he is beginning to see himself as a martyr to the faith.
you don't appease these scum, that much is dead certain
You actually don't want to know what my solution is, hah
Actually I do, because either you appease this scum or the scum that are threatening violence. Its a lose lose, so I am wondering which is the least worst option.
Let no one doubt that this bastard would do the same thing with Talmuds if the flavor of the day were anti-Semitism. Which it would be, if he and his ilk got their way with Muslims.
oh of course
Muslims are the low hanging fruit, but they'll just go right up the tree

The die has been cast.
The 'recruits' don't radicalize and flip in one day, on one issue, at one moment in time. It's a process that may take months or even years. This new item will be a major propaganda coup for those recruiters who have been hammering 'the USA hates Islam' on those skulls full of mush.

Two truths-
1. The list is never ending
2. There is no such thing as a bigot with only one target.
Deploy the local police and as soon as they light a match, arrest them for not having a burning permit.
Have three fire trucks roll up and hose down the whole fucking crowd. They'll be using their bibles as umbrellas, which will probably piss off other Xians.
Actually I do, because either you appease this scum or the scum that are threatening violence. Its a lose lose, so I am wondering which is the least worst option.
You aren't addressing my point
What happens when a hundred more crazy preachers do the same thing?
There's ALREADY a guy in Tennessee also planning on burning Korans
You appease this guy, you give him what he wants, then every klansman and every so-con lunatic will want a payday
Let no one doubt that this bastard would do the same thing with Talmuds if the flavor of the day were anti-Semitism. Which it would be, if he and his ilk got their way with Muslims.
I read somewhere that he is also planning on torching a Talmud. CNN I think reported it.

I'm not disagreeing at all. I'm just saying the Quran burning will not be a tipping point.
Benedict burns copy of Bible & announces that it is only paper & nothing to get excited about & asks that other religions realize the same thing about copies of their books.

God why are you still here, why are you still repeating your foolish garbage here

Then the Mormons, then the Catholic papists, and then the Episcopalians and all of the other errant blasphemers. The rigid defenders of the truth end up excluding all who are not armed and manning the perimeter.
I just heard Ed Schultz on the radio asking why the White House hasn't contacted this guy. I almost ran off the road thinking what a stupid idea that was. To hear that they might actually do it is dumbfounding. While he's in the process of trying to appease the crazies, why doesn't Obama just "produce his birth certificate"?
He made his opinion known this morning, which I thought was enough if not above and beyond what he had to do,
Have three fire trucks roll up and hose down the whole fucking crowd. They'll be using their bibles as umbrellas, which will probably piss off other Xians.
I mean the obsessive and repetitious join the whig party crap, it's like something an autistic guy would do, constant repetition of stuff nobody cares about, constant inability to engage or relate to other human beings as people
Because it is not foolish. This thing is going to explode & what I am proposing would at least mitigate it somewhat.
Better idea: the Vatican publicly apologizes for past book-burnings (and the "heretics" it burned along with them) and says that this is never a good idea.
Not that what a Catholic says would carry any weight with these "Christians".
I'm not disagreeing at all. I'm just saying the Quran burning will not be a tipping point.
I'm disagreeing with you on one key point, we are talking about a few different things at once.
This Quran burning will not be a tipping point for those already committed to violence, terror, anti-Westernism, etc. It will merely fire them back up.
It will be a tipping point for the next wave of recruits who are on the verge of becoming those committed to violence. Those that are living in rural religious schools focusing on more fundamental teachings, the true terror nurseries, those old boys/young men being indoctrinated into that cult of hate. Since it will be recorded in history, it will be able to be used for many years.
I'm in favor of 'appeasing' him by letting him have his little book-burning unmolested except for whatever legal stuff the fire department actually, legitimately has for stopping him. I doubt they can actually engage in prior restraint, they can probably just arrest/fine him afterwards.
I think if he's stopped beforehand, more preachers will try to do it. There is no reasonable way that burning a Koran can be seen as an incitement to riot, so I would not approve of stopping it on those grounds.

It's not 'just paper' any more than this blog is not just a bunch of 1's and 0's: you are burning words, phrases, ideas, philosophies. It's a powerful statement to burn a book but it's also careless and clumsy. But the thing is, it's just the power that counts. Jones must be freaking high as a kite on egodrenaline right now.

I think preventing him from doing it will cause a hundred more preachers to do it.
I think letting him do it will not.
I may be wrong. I'm not an expert in stopping idiots from being idiots.
preventing him: yes, more preachers will want to do it.
letting him: YES. MORE PEOPLE WILL DEFINITELY WANT TO DO IT.
people don't go "well that was nice, putting up racist signs of president obama and offensive pictures of dead babies/bodies/more offensive things. i think our point has been proven!"
as long as there are people who push the crazy (republican congressman, crazy right wing blogs, fox news), they'll just keep pushing it and pushing it. if you don't put a fight, it'll just embolden them more.

Yeah I think that's the way to do it, we don't reward him by giving him a call from the president or making him into a martyr
I think he's kind of backing up Petraeus here. I agree it's a bad idea.
But if Petraeus says that this will endanger troops lives, then it does, from one perspective, make sense to try to stop it.
But I don't think it's appropriate, or necessary.
The damage is done, IMO.
I'm not sure anything could be done at this point to settle things down.
One guy, with a congregation of what, 50? Half of whom left the church, apparently, over this. So one guy with a congregation now of, let's say 30, has unsettled the US and much of the world with his idiotic idea. And I'm not sure the genie can be put back in the bottle.
Well - let me amend that. One guy and his reduced congregation, fueled by the loud Geller and friends, who have their own thing going on . . . What an effin' mess.
Jones is simpler than that, I think. Burning a book relieves him of the requirement to talk about ideas, and just lets him figuratively poke his finger in someone's eye.
I mean the obsessive and repetitious join the whig party crap, it's like something an autistic guy would do, constant repetition of stuff nobody cares about, constant inability to engage or relate to other human beings as people
Everyone who hasn't already should read Shiplord Kirel's LGF Page about the "rule book" promulgated by Pastor Terry for students at his "academy", and click through to the link giving the full six-page fascist illiterate text.
And then someone in God's name explain to me what kind of chin-dribbling, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging "Christian" you have to be to sign up to be this man's student.
No, actually that is the first time you have said that. You said that klansman and rubes, etc would pull the same stunt.
So, do the radicals who are threatening violence come into this calculation at all, or do they get some kind of pass?
No it's the second time I've said this
Please note my #39
hah and is this where you try and divert the conversation away from Terry Jones? I notice that happens a lot here when people are politically unconfortable with the topic
Jones is simpler than that, I think. Burning a book relieves him of the requirement to talk about ideas, and just lets him figuratively poke his finger in someone's eye.
Yes. We shouldn't lose sight that this guy did not do this on his own. If it weren't for the backdrop of the anti-Muslim rhetoric whipped up by Geller and those opposing Park51, I think this would have only gotten minor mention.
hah, I'm just tired of crap like that being given a pass. Not angry, more just frustrated and disgusted that hurr hurr bburn some bibles that'll work Ojoe was defended on that thread

yes, with his middle finger. It's essentially 'F*** you Moslems!' in his best Johnny Cash impression.
Its funny if it weren't so serious with the consequences at stake.

Well, they advanced the state of the art of bigotry, they created the envrionment for these Terry Jones types to thrive. Spencer and Geller showed these people what was possible and gave them cover, they stepped up. It's like a pyramid, and at the top are the very few who are willing to commit violence, supported by the foundation of politicans and media guys and bloggers and radio talkers who are giving them support and ammo
hah and is this where you try and divert the conversation away from Terry Jones? I notice that happens a lot here when people are politically unconfortable with the topic
Not in the least uncomfortable. Sorry if it appeared that way. Lets get back to Jones. I agree it is a bad idea for the Pres. to feed this Kook. I am very troubled by the world wide unrest this fools actions will most certainly cause. So back to my original question (it was a question), is it worse to have the Pres. "legitimize" this fool with a call - risking klansmen and rubes to follow suit - or to risk violence against citizens (American or not) and members of the armed services?
Personally I value human life over inconvenience so I would go with the phone call, assuming there is not a better idea.
You hinted that you had one, but said "you don't want to know." As I already mentioned, yes, I do. I see the US in a lose-lose situation here.
It's funny how blase' you get talking about things like Autism and downs when you're surrounded by it :p
/and to go on a slight rant, it's appropriate as a negative comparison anyways. Rude to bring up maybe, but its certainly negative, I hate when people reimagine disorders as 'just different'.
Since Gainsville is such a godless place as not to give the good pastor a permit for his symbolic infidel roast, why doesn't he round up a few hundred spare copies of the city's White Pages and burn everybody who lives there?
hah, I'm just tired of crap like that being given a pass. Not angry, more just frustrated and disgusted that hurr hurr bburn some bibles that'll work Ojoe was defended on that thread
I understand WUB, but that aint ever gonna happen, no matter who might want it.
Everyone has a different way of thinking about things. I don't agree with that approach at all, but it is just one man's opinion and he has a right to it.
I don't see anything about people leaving the congregation (only did a quick search).
But here's something interesting - apparently part of the church property had its tax-exempt status removed earlier this year as it is used for "for-profit" businesses.
they take down a lot of crap all day long. porn, movies, tv show episodes, hell even clips with songs that aren't allowed (they strip the audio and leave the video intact)
i'm not an expert about censorship, nor about stupid people dealing with stupid people.. but if something is far too difficult to continue fighting and there isn't popular support behind it, it won't catch on. that's how i think, atleast.

That was a joke, my honest solution is to let him do it, because human life is more endagered by creating a situation where many many more koran burners are motivated.
If you walked into a really REALLY bad neighborhood, pulled out a thousand bucks from your wallet and gave it to the first guy you saw, would you think that would make you more safe? Or less safe?
Has the Harpy made any public statement about the Bonfire of the Semitic Texts, or is she just ignoring the intent to burn Talmuds as well and rubbing her liver-spotted hands in glee?

yeah, it's a thing. There's a lot of stuff we can't say here ;-)
Ismail Ibn Ali, president of the University of Florida's student organization Muslims on Campus, pointed out that burning Qurans is actually the proper way to dispose of a tattered holy book.
"The physical burning of the Quran is not the issue but it's the hatred behind it," he said.
And that is exactly what it all boils down to in the end.
Since Gainsville is such a godless place as not to give the good pastor a permit for his symbolic infidel roast, why doesn't he round up a few hundred spare copies of the city's White Pages and burn everybody who lives there?
You know, just to be thorough.
There happens to be a whole hell of a lot more in Gainesville.
That was a joke, my honest solution is to let him do it, because human life is more endagered by creating a situation where many many more koran burners are motivated.

You hand out the thousand to ten people. Then you're safe.
*shakes WUP*
WHAT THE HELL, WUP! Calm down dude, don't do anything rash, think of the children.
(I know I'm late to this party, but I still wanted to say it) :D
I know, i got mad at a guy making jokes about how we should burn more holy books and cook hot dogs with them and claiming that you can't give Those People Special Treatment, because They'll Riot. What was I thinking?!?!? Those are totally acceptable things to say in polite conversation!
do you have the source for that? I remember someone mentioning it on LGF a few days ago, but i havent seen the source. not trolling! just curious..
OK. This article says his congregation has reduced from around 100 to about 50 currently. I'm posting a good portion of this because I think it's interesting.
Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Pope Benedict, Hillary Clinton, NATO, Interpol, every country in the European Union, every religious group in Gainesville, Florida and perhaps the entire civilized world has implored and pleaded with the zealot so-called pastor Terry Jones to cease and desist from burning Korans on September 11, 2010. The foreign ministries of Pakistan and Bahrain issued official denunciations with Bahrain calling it a "shameful act which is incompatible with the principles of tolerance and coexistence." The president of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has also sent a letter to President Obama asking him to stop the bonfire. In Pakistan, about 200 lawyers and civil society members marched and burned a U.S. flag in the central Pakistani city of Multan, demanding that Washington halt the burning of the Muslim holy book.
Jones' answer? He feigns religious persecution. He says his bank wants his church to pay what it is owed. He also says he has 200 Korans and he wants buy more to burn. There is no subtext or code for what this pastor wants. He wants you to send him and his 50 followers money and lots of it. Yes, please send money by joining as a "member" of the church. He also needs money because Florida authorities discovered that he was running a for-profit eBay enterprise and the state wants to get paid for sales taxes.
The most recent tax filing available on Jones' non-profit church from Guidestar (his church is listed as Dove Charismatic Ministries, Inc) shows his church spends 30.5% on "program services" while "administrative costs" accounted for 69.5 percent. His 20 acre church property is for sale. Online real estate listings indicate Jones is looking for other ways to drum up some cash. According to the listing on real estate website AllisonAbles.com, the Dove World Church is for sale for 2.9 million. The listing says the property has been "reduced $1.1 million for a quick sale".
I strongly suspect the bottom line for Jones is he is broke and he needs to come up with cash very quickly or lose his church. He admits in a deposition that his congregation has decreased in recent years, telling attorneys that he currently has a congregation of about 50 people - whereas he had 100 people when his congregation was at its largest. Some current estimates place the number of members at 30 persons which is hardly enough to support any church.
God has no part of Jones' plan. Jones' plan is the Terry Jones plan and it was the reason why his old church in Cologne Germany fired him. His motive is as earthly, worldly and as old as humanity itself - craven ego, greed and avarice. Terry Jones has figured out the magic formula to get every self loathing zealot nut job in the world to send him money --- Get on every TV, radio, newspaper and web site and plead for like minded idiots to send money. There is no doubt that several hundreds of new "members" have sent in their tithes to pastor fake doctor of theology. So far over 900 fans and potential donors have joined Jones' book fan club and virtual church on Facebook. I wonder why Jones' Facebook and YouTube sites have not been shut down because all of them violate the sites' terms of use prohibiting hate speech.
Hss Islamaphobia increased or become more vocal since Obama became president?
That's hard to say. Once Obama was elected, and a few cried out against the stealth Kenyan borne Muslim, those being repressed by the steel fisted guard of liberal PC felt a kinship with those few and gained the courage to voice their cherished, long held and self evidently moral opinion about those people.
Meant me and WUB mainly. I live with it, and he spent the last 15 years (until he quit) working with it ;)
okey-dokey. It's sorta what i figured, but I did want to clarify. In case someone takes offense, thinking you were talking about the folks here. So, you are clarified! Nobody get offended . . .
I mean the obsessive and repetitious join the whig party crap, it's like something an autistic guy would do, constant repetition of stuff nobody cares about, constant inability to engage or relate to other human beings as people
So, now you're going to attack autistic people? How about those of us with Asperger's?
Get the stick out of your ass and relate to people as people.
The anti-Islam sentiment that we're witnessing today really feels remiscient to anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, and anti-Protestantism at different points of history. Was talking with someone today about history and they said the only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history. Sure as hell feels that way.
Extremists will raise the ire of other extremists. This is true in the case of Terry Jones. This year, the rampant Islamaphobia in the USA has swiftly gone out of control not only with the planned Koran burning, but with the protest and individuals surrounding Park 51 (Geller, Wilders, Spencer, EDL, etc.).
Then there is the recent Islamaphobic rhetoric from Bryan Fischer regarding Muslims being treated as neo-Nazis. No matter how you look at it though it looks clear to me that the American extremists are trying to incite Islamic extremists to satisfy their own cynical goals. Many of the more religious extremists are also intent on inciting a holy war of sorts between Christianity and Islam.
i am sadly unable to form cohesive arguments regarding all this autism talk.
but i just wanted to say i worked a few years in special ed as a sub and it's very eye opening in many ways. i recommend trying it!
Windy's brother is authstic, and I've been working with autistic people in the DD health care field since 1996.
Yes, I know.
It was a cryptic post and sounded almost like an insult of folks here.
I simply tried to get him to clarify and he did.
(lookin' out for him, I am, even though he did call me an ass).

I got no problem with a fire hose for the fire. But "Xians"?
So if some Rabbi does some stupid stunt do we then use those awful anti semitic terms about him? I would sure hope not.

2) A Presidential candidate impregnates his mistress while his wife is suffering from cancer and the media looks the other way. The National Inquirer reports what the MSM has known--but refuses to report--for a considerable amount of time.
3) A totally unknown "preacher" over a congregation of 40 people (is it that many?) announces he will legally do something that is shunned across the political spectrum--from the most rock hard conservatives through the most limp-noodle liberals--and the MSM ships in their satellite trucks to broadcast this as if this guy were a head of state?
Is there any wonder that the MSM is continually losing their viewers?
WASHINGTON (Army News Service, June 17, 2010) -- Five Soldiers have been charged with the premeditated murders of three Afghan civilians.
Charges were filed against Pfc. Andrew Holmes, 19, of Boise, Idaho; Spc. Jeremy Morlock; Spc. Michael Wagnon, 29, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Spc. Adam Winfield, 21, of Cape Coral, Fla.; and Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, 25, of Billings, Mont.
All five Soldiers are assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. That unit deployed to Afghanistan in July 2009 and is now processing to return to the U.S...

I think he's kind of backing up Petraeus here. I agree it's a bad idea.
But if Petraeus says that this will endanger troops lives, then it does, from one perspective, make sense to try to stop it.
But I don't think it's appropriate, or necessary.
The Islamic threat of violence is working in exactly the way they intend it to. Terry Jones has a protected constitutional right of free speech and expression- he as a private citizen has every right to do this-and the fact that high level government officials are sending the FBI to "visit" him I think could be construed as an infringement of his civil rights and will probably result in a very lucrative judgment on his behalf in a future civil rights lawsuit.
Why does it seem that so many people are ready to blame him if violence occurs and not the future perpetrators of this violence...?
See, t's not as bad as jumping into a lake, and waaay less harsh than dying in a fire.
People shouldn't appropriate real disorders to explain why they feel out of place or have social problems.
Its the 'fake transgendered nerd' of the 2000s'
Appropriating disorders to assuage egos and make onesself feel special is damaging to actual clinical diagnosis, it can prevent people from becoming empowered enough to get themselves help
I don't know if b-sharp is telling the truth or not, but I do know that there's a ton of people who just up and decide they have a psych disorder with no clinical diagnosis
Beware the instant expert on psych, beware the fakers, they're enemies of medicine

Nobody's saying he doesn't have the right to do it, they're just saying it's not wise.
I'm thinking perhaps, with folks with whom we interact every day, it might be a good idea to assume good faith and try to clarify, before jumping all over somebody. Ya know?
And CBS, MSNBC, Reuters, NBC, ABC, NPR, New York Times, LA Times, BBC, McClatchy... //
Body part claims aside I posted a link to the US Army News Service which supports the news of charges regarding the murder of 3 civilians including an attempt to impede the investigation by Spc. Michael Wagnon.

See what I did there?
I'm not saying that you said that...my point is that sending the FBI to "talk" to him is infringing on his rights since it can be legally construed as very intimidating. Our democracy and right(s) of free speech are being degraded by this incident, and it isn't Terry Jones' fault, it is our government's.
What you say of course is true, we have terrible incidents from the past to consider. But the story has some weirdness-The soldiers have lawyers as spokespeop0le but the military has not yet filed charges?
And this-
"But Cpl Morlock's lawyer told the Seattle Times his client's statements were made while he was suffering from concussion, was under the influence of prescription drugs, and was being evacuated."
No, tool. He's accusing the other guy of doing it for karma points.
Windy's downdings are well-earned, and neither one of you has the Magic Internet Fake Diagnosis Meter.
Fair enough, whatever
I'll just say this, that in my actual considerable experience hanging around on the internet with very strange people who often diagnose themselves with all kinds of psych, that I instinctively distrust anyone who pops up and says I'M ASPERGERS on the net
if you have more experience hanging out with people who behave like this than I do, I'd be extremely surprised

Uhh, no, it isn't infringing on your rights to be talked to by law enforcement. I have no idea where you get this idea, but it's bullshit.

Maybe because he is a fucking creep who is trying to raise money in the face of endangering our soldiers and other Americans abroad.
He is no man of God, and he is a crook to boot. So spare me your bleeding heart.
SEATTLE — The father of a U.S. soldier serving in Afghanistan says he tried nearly a half dozen times to pass an urgent message from his son to the Army: Troops in his unit had murdered an Afghan civilian, planned more killings and threatened him to keep quiet about it.
Do you really have diagnosed aspergers, or did you pick up the term on the internet?
Because the latter group can go walk into a tree.
Let's see. My grandson was diagnosed as autistic, although high functioning. My daughter was diagnosed with Aspergers. My father shows many of the symptoms although he's never been diagnosed. The symptoms I had as a kid were similar to both my grandson's and my daughter's.
No, I don't suppose I picked the term up on the Internet.
I take it admitting to atheism around you and WUB is the kiss of death and everything said after is suspect.

I think you missed my point. That is the Geller-bots' argument against the mosque in NYC. I flipped the script...

When this guy's actions contribute to the danger our troops are in, which they have, then the situation has become a national security issue, I would think. And I assume there is a different set of "rules" for that.
Amazing. Two bit cultist Emperor has all the world at his feet. Don't think the wannabes ain't watching. A few innocent people are going to die somewhere and it will be all on his head. But times are tough and his property is up for sale. Being the Emperor is expensive.Follow The Money Maybe if he erected a Glenn Beck weeping statue with coin operated Vapo-Rub stations so all can weep with Glenn? Money in that I'm sure.
I've always subscibed to the theory that some folks just need a punch in the face. This pinhead is one.
He isn't breaking any laws, so why do they need to travel 1/2 way across the country to "speak " with him. Did the FBI ever do that when somebody burned the flag or the bible?
It's funny how blase' you get talking about things like Autism and downs when you're surrounded by it :p
/and to go on a slight rant, it's appropriate as a negative comparison anyways. Rude to bring up maybe, but its certainly negative, I hate when people reimagine disorders as 'just different'.
So let me get this straight...
If you work with developmentally challenged people, it's okay to use "autistic" or "retarded" as derogatory insults? Wouldn't that be a bit like someone saying that since they work with African-Americans, it's okay for them to use "The N Word" as a derogatory insult?
For people who felt that Lost was a promising show that ended up really sucking -- have your hatred validated in this very thorough review (full of spoilers, as you would expect).
When this guy's actions contribute to the danger our troops are in, which they have, then the situation has become a national security issue, I would think. And I assume there is a different set of "rules" for that.
It is 100% totally and completely legal for the FBI to talk to people, under any circumstances, for any reason, just because they want to talk to you. There is no law broken by doing so, no civil right threatened, nada.
So, it doesn't require a different set of rules, because the first set of rules already covers this.
Any non-Muslim fighting in a Muslim country is already a target. Some nut job burning a Koran in Florida isn't going to endanger them anymore than they are already.
The longtime Baptist minister says the Rev. Terry Jones of the Dove World Center Outreach in Gainesville, Fla., is doing the right thing by burning the Quran. So he's going to do likewise.
Old plans to set fire to a Quran on Saturday at his home and then post a video of the burning book online. And if he had his way, there would be no Muslims in America.
"If they want to have their religion, they can have it somewhere else," said Old, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Joelton and Academy Heights Baptist Church in Gallatin, which merged with another church. He no longer has a congregation and instead runs an evangelical ministry called Disciples of Christ.
News of the local Quran burning angered the Rev. Larry Herbert of Faith Covenant Church in Springfield. He dismissed it as a publicity stunt.
"The guy is a nut," Herbert said. "This is crazy. I am sorry that anyone who names the name of Christ would do this."

I was thinking more along the lines of requiring him to shut down the event.
No matter, looks like something else is happening. Trying to find it . . .
No. Atheism is fine. I am agnostic/deist, I am essentially irreligious, and believe in a higher power as an abstract, sort of by default, much the way I believe there are boundaries to the universe
The thing is this: Claiming your athiesm makes you superior, or smarter, or more of a critical thinker than religious people, and that religion is merely a made up stopgap to explain stuff like thunderstorms and droughts, is massively disrespectful to Christians, Jews, Muslims, and pretty much everyone who's not athiest. And pretty much ignorant of human culture and development in general
I have many friends who are athiests, but what they don't do, is go on and on about how religion is a cancer and we should get rid of religion and religion ruins everything. I don't give anyone a pass when they start saying those things, because it's bigotry
So the kiss of death, if you want to know, is gloating about how more elightened you are and how religion should be done away with. That's pretty intolerable, and I don't like interacting with such people
He isn't breaking any laws, so why do they need to travel 1/2 way across the country to "speak " with him. Did the FBI ever do that when somebody burned the flag or the bible?
Because they want to. Because they have questions for him. Because they want to try to talk him out of it, perhaps. Who knows.
What I *DO* know for an absolute fact, is that it is 100% legal for them to do so. It requires no warrants, no special orders, nothing. Talking to people isn't doing things "to" them, it's talking. The pastor would be within his rights to refuse to talk to them, of course, but it is perfectly legal for the FBI to talk to people.
There is no direct of implied violation of any right here. None.
I keep getting a mental image of a big dog, like a Rottweiler, lifting his leg and peeing on the good (not) Reverand as he gives his righteous (not) speech in preparation of The Burning™. Then I wanna see that video go viral. And I'll laugh and laugh...
It's less about 'okayness' than about 'you get desensitized'.
Here's the difference: There are actual negative qualities associated with developmental disabilities. These qualities can be compared to people (as compared to blackness which has no inherent negative qualities).
It can be rude and often inappropriate to do, but that kind of insensitivity happens a LOT in healthcare.
Any non-Muslim fighting in a Muslim country is already a target. Some nut job burning a Koran in Florida isn't going to endanger them anymore than they are already.
I believe there are places where our troops have gained a measure of respect and cooperation (even if they aren't liked, which is irrelevant). I believe Terry Jones' actions could very well endanger them more than they are.
I dunno, my mom tried that back in the '70s with my brother. Needless to say, it didn't work :P
When I was in College I took classes to be a Mental Health Technician and spent a couple hours a week working out at Napa Mental Hospital..
Worked a few T wards but mostly with DD and DS's...Sometimes I would just hang out in the Childrens autistic ward and just hand out music toys and just play guitar and sing while they banged drums and had fun.. Music is the life of our soul...I wrote a paper about it in School...The Children were wonderful to work with...Adults were Sick, Sad, disgusting, Helpless and on serious drugs..

I still want the Super Secret Super Soaker Squad to make an appearance with their high pressure water guns.
Of course it is "legal" for them to speak with him, but it is the content of the conversation that could be problematic. If they attempt to threaten or coerce him not to exercise his rights as officials of the government, it could very well constitute an infringement of his civil rights, and trust me there will be attorneys lining up to get him as a client pro bono (not me though)
to me, if during this announcement I get a little emotional for us this has been a trying time.
have been in much prayer and fear over this period.
what would have to happen for us to call this off.
as we prayed about that in the past...if god would want us to call this off then our goal would be...the american people do not as a whole want the mosque at the gz location
if they were willing to cancel mosque or move away from that location we would consider that a sign from god
he talked to iman in NY city
I will be flying to talk with iman in NY city and he has agreed to move the mosque, we have agreed to to cancel our event on saturday

I don't actually think calling someone retarded is the same as calling someone the N-word. It might be the same as calling someone with a broken leg "gimpy".
And it's less that it's okay and more that it's sort of commonplace, the way coroners become blase and desensitized to death. When you've been choked unconscious by a DD person at your job, hit over the head by a coffee carafe, had to chase a dude across an intersection because he ran into a live construction yard to sort newspapers, you acquire a certain gallows humor and free-wheeling liberty with such terms, because it's a hard job and beign earnestly serious and hypersensitive about it is completely impossible
Not really saying it's okay as describing where it comes from. People who work in the field understand this, it's a thing
Excellent thought. It could be considered a counter-protest, and just as legitimate.
Nobody gets hurt either. I always swore that if I was ever going to go postal (please accept my apologies any find USPS workers that might be reading) I was going to do it with a super soaker, a ping pong gun, a Nerf Gun and a marshmallow shooter.
It's becoming painfully obvious that people are just trying to get in the news cycle now.
I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry
Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em all around
We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry
Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry
You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're stiff, kick 'em all around
Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry
We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it's said and done, we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry
So WUB using the term autistic as an insult is acceptable?
Using as it a descriptor of the behavior of people who don't seem to be aware of how their actions might affect others is at least accurate, if nothing else.
Honestly, people need to lighten up. Retarded people are in fact not terribly intelligent, morons do exist, and people with Aspergers and other forms of autism are generally less aware of their impact on other people.
The OH MY GOD I'M SO OFFENDED thing gets so old, so fast.
I respect your opinion on that, but I feel that the ISlamists will always find another excuse to kill us whether it be Israel, cartoons, supporting India. This is a clash of civilizations, whether we like it or not. Any alleged affront is nothing more than a pretense for future assertions of plausible deniability.
(CBS) The Florida minister who planned to burn copies of the Quran on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, told reporters Thursday he is canceling the event, heeding to outcry from officials in Washington, Afghanistan and Gainesville, Fla., where his church is located.
If I understand this we can be proud there is ONE set of rules at least domestically. Police (FBI or whoever) have the right to approach and speak to whomever they please. Imagined intimidation is not a legal constraint. No they can not beat us, or falsely arrest. Nor lie about our actions or statements. But ring the doorbell and speak? Oh yes they can. And in this case should. So much so there is a company that trains cops how to do this specifically to increase convictions.
Fortunately for our democracy, those constraints exist across all criminal law. For where this begins to fail see FISA, President Clinton and Aldrich Ames. Warrantless searches etc. IMO
I'm repeating myself, but I think Autistic was appropriate the way he used it.
He didn't say 'what a fucking autist!' But repetitive, obsessive behavior is often an attribute of autism, especially with the people that have it so bad that they're in group homes. I know the guy he's comparing Ojoe to, and its a good comparison (Name withheld to comply with HIPAA).

I agree re: the Islamists., which I take to mean radicalized Muslims.
I do feel this has the potential to rile up those Muslims who previously had no inclination to jump into radical Islam.

ahaha yes
Man if we actually didn't censor ourselves here...
Pastor Terry Jones said Thursday that he decided to cancel his protest because the leader of a planned Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its controversial location.
So the Muslims will bend over backwards anytime a yahoo gets a hold of a Koran and a match? Not the message to be sending.
The message was very consolatory and ended with a call to end terror in the name of Islam, and tossed in a comment about the USA being the greatest country in the world.

All true- and equally true is that we can choose not to speak to the authorities.
Donald Trump steps into the leadership vacuum IN NY,
What "leadership vacuum IN NY"???
The Mayor, leader of NYC, has spoken out very well on this issue.
And do you think that media whore Trump cares about anything more than having his name imprinted on your brain cells so that he can try and make more money at some later date?
I feel for police officers when I'm not busy hating them :p
It'd be really hard to not form all kinds of negative prejudices and such working in that field, and it'd be hard to not be adversarial to the people you're supposed to be protecting (depending on the community, natch).
The Mayor, leader of NYC, has spoken out very well on this issue.
And do you think that media whore Trump cares about anything more than having his name imprinted on your brain cells so that he can try and make more money at some later date?
I think DadO'Blondes means there's a leadership vacuum because he doesn't like Bloomberg's statement...

And do you think that media whore Trump cares about anything more than having his name imprinted on your brain cells so that he can try and make more money at some later date?
The wingnut in question is calling it a leadership vacuum because he doesn't agree. It's sort of like refusing to acknowledge that the president elected by the other party is actually president, because, well, he hasn't had a chance to lick the birth certificate and ejaculate on it yet, so clearly it can't be legit.
The Mayor, leader of NYC, has spoken out very well on this issue.
And do you think that media whore Trump cares about anything more than having his name imprinted on your brain cells so that he can try and make more money at some later date?
I hope this doesn't mean the Trump-Cordoba Center is going to be developed.
Yes, but I am more or less questioning what seems to be a trend with WUB, an example of which can be seen in the Bottom 10 comments right now.
yeah, the trend is I'm frustrated at you and others defending a guy who was saying some really crazy and garbage and creepy things in a thread, to the point where he got all racial, and you called him a "good egg"
Who jokes about and advocates book burning of bibles and thinks it'd be a real wise idea for the pope to burn a bible and talks about how you can't give muslims special treatment, because oh man they're gonna riot! That's uhh not a good egg to me, it may be a guy you're familiar with, but he said some awful and weird stuff, and I get frustrated that there's a willfull blindness to it. So I call him a retard because I'm sick of it.
But I'm the problem because I used the word "retard"
Down is up today I guess, wake me When Gravity Fails
If they did sell the Park51 building to Trump, sweet deal there, they should insist he still put a community center at the hallowed Burlington Coat Factory site.

..another tea party in the rose Garden, perhaps...? Wow, another teachable moment for Obama!!
Actually if this is true, I think it is a very good move. Idiot does not burn Koran and Obama does not have to validate the idiot. Rauf is seen as a peace-maker. Win, win, win.
If they did sell the Park51 building to Trump, sweet deal there, they should insist he still put a community center at the hallowed Burlington Coat Factory site.
The recruits you mention have already been radicalized.
Their commitment to violence is already part of their make up.
The die has been cast.
Consider this. You're an Afghani Muslim whose understanding of America is about as in-depth and nuanced as the average American's understanding of Afghanistan. You don't plant IEDs or toss grenades, but you're pretty sure your brother-in-law does. On a particularly significant day, you see images from America of the unbridled crazy that's sure to be at GZ, and a couple of rallies across the nation where they're burning the Koran and calling your religion (and by extension, you) the enemy of all mankind. Does that make you more or less willing to rat out your brother-in-law to the patrol of Marines that passes by every day?
Well I have decided to burn an old copy of "Life Is Hell" from Matt Groening's more creative days on Saturday. Bongo, Akbar and Jeff are all the spawn of the devil.
... the blog software or our host would likely do it for you. Post the "C Word" or the "N Word" and see how it gets reformatted.
I was referring to our attitudes, which are commonplace among our kind, and not at all commonplace here, LGF is a very unusual place to me, it doesn't behave or have the demographis of any other internet site I've ever visited, it has a wildly different feel
They don't involve the C word, they might however involve links to pictures we find funny that would be offputting to some of the more culturally conservative people here

I haven't been following the story that closely the last few days, so I assume this has already been commented on, but this bit from the article still triggered a minor double-take:
-- An armed Christian organization, which withdrew its support for the Quran-burning event last month, said the administration "needs to stay out of this" and pledged to defend the Dove Center's right to hold the event, despite its disagreement.
Well I have decided to burn an old copy of "Life Is Hell" from Matt Groening's more creative days on Saturday. Bongo, Akbar and Jeff are all the spawn of the devil.
If they did sell the Park51 building to Trump, sweet deal there, they should insist he still put a community center at the hallowed Burlington Coat Factory site.
I hope the the imam stands firm in the plan to build the community center at the proposed location (burlington coat factory). Anything less will embolden the bigots in this country. I am saying that they must stand up to the book burners, the geller and spencer types, and whoever else wants to take away their freedom to practice islam is this country. I hope they make a stand for their faith and for equality.
Breaking on AP: The Koran burning is cancelled, supposedly because Park51 is being moved. Jones is flying to NY on Saturday to talk to Rauf about the plans, which is really pitiful. Here's the story:
oh no, he doesn't have a propensity to stick his nose where it doesn't belong-like local Boston police matters, or say,Manhattan zoning issues...
By the way, it's if you're not angry, you're not paying attention, you may want to fix your tagline there, mister partisan trying to make this about Obama
I respect your opinion on that, but I feel that the ISlamists will always find another excuse to kill us whether it be Israel, cartoons, supporting India. This is a clash of civilizations, whether we like it or not. Any alleged affront is nothing more than a pretense for future assertions of plausible deniability.
I still get amazed by how so much people eat up this clash of civilizations nonsense. Don't you find it strange that the civilizations in question decided to pretty much refrain from clashing during the last 300 years? Almost none of the major conflicts during this period were religious in nature, let alone a Christianity vs. Islam fantasy deathmatch.

The damage is done. Just like the damage was done when the moderate American Muslims wanting to build a community and worship center were met with protest.
All we had to do to keep the moral high ground over radical Islam was to honor our Constitution and Bill of Rights by doing nothing to oppose them.
We could have done nothing unusual and been the poster child for freedom around the world. Instead we're the poster child for rights for me but not for thee. Crap!
oh no, he doesn't have a propensity to stick his nose where it doesn't belong-like local Boston police matters, or say,Manhattan zoning issues...
I don't believe he weighed in on Manhattan zoning issue. That was already decided by the local officials.
If you are going to be an ass, at least be an honest one.

I agree, though think it's in very poor taste indeed, which should make the possible involvement of Trump all the more to be expected.
Restrictions - even if self-imposed - in order to appease bigotry only embolden the bigots. Doubling down on the threats of violence appears to work quite well for those who must be appeased.

Crazy Pam's gonna be pissed. She was all set to have that little rage-gasm this weekend and it might be moot come Saturday morning.
Personally, I must say that I'm rather disheartened by Rauf's choice to give in to the bigots. I have very serious doubts that they will allow him a day's rest now that they have sunk their teeth in. The only person who "wins" in this whole sad affair is OBL, because now he has the headline for his next recruitment poster.

People like this guy love a power fantasy. if it's a clash of civilizations then it's TOTAL WAR and guys like this can turn their brains off and hate freely, no critical thinking or proper grammar needed
No deal on moving Park 51 according to what I'm reading.
I sincerely hope you're right. The thought that this Terry Jones, who ought to go back to Monty Python where he belongs, is influencing major (or even minor) political and religious decisions in the USA is just revolting.
So I guess now we know what Trump considers the border of Ground Zero.
I would guess that Mr. Trump, for all his bombast and coiffing, knows the score. He's got the muscle to run any NYC construction union to a site and get things done.
The larger point seems to be this:
This "proposal" by Trump is good, old-fashioned, American style problem solving. Typically, this offer would have been brokered in a back room, with a few leading politicos nodding their heads. In the end, everybody gets to walk out looking like a winner:
the Imam for "hearing" (and getting his mosque anyway)
the developer for profiting,
the mayor for brokering and the governor too
the unions for new jobs,
the people of NY, bigoted or otherwise, w/ a face-saving solution,
and plenty more too.
But not this time, Trump is calling them out -- in the language of American capitalism: I'LL PAY YOU TO MOVE THE MOSQUE (and thereby contribute a cash premium to its building and construction).
The thing is this: Claiming your athiesm makes you superior, or smarter, or more of a critical thinker than religious people,
Where did I say that?
and that religion is merely a made up stopgap to explain stuff like thunderstorms and droughts,
Do you want to describe a primitive culture that didn't develop a 'god' as an explanation of physical events?
is massively disrespectful to Christians, Jews, Muslims, and pretty much everyone who's not athiest.
I'm sorry, but describing the origins of religion is disrespectful? Do the Anthropologists who do that know this?
And pretty much ignorant of human culture and development in general
And you know I'm ignorant how? By comparing my knowledge against yours and you aren't as ignorant as I am. Is that correct?
I have many friends who are athiests,
And you let them use the bathroom. Yes I know.
but what they don't do, is go on and on about how religion is a cancer and we should get rid of religion and religion ruins everything.
Sorry, but the belief that moral decisions should be made based on religious texts rather than considered in light of modern context is an impediment.
I don't give anyone a pass when they start saying those things, because it's bigotry
Thanks for calling me a bigot. Now, do you want to give an example where I've treated any Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Deist, or whatever, any different than I've treated anyone else, because of their belief system? You just have to show one case.
So the kiss of death, if you want to know, is gloating about how more elightened you are and how religion should be done away with. That's pretty intolerable, and I don't like interacting with such people
During the expression of my opinion, an informed opinion I might add, despite you believing I'm ignorant, I don't believe I gloated even once. I did give reasons why I believe the way I do, but I certainly didn't put anyone down for her beliefs.
As for not interacting with me again, so be it. I will find another place to hang my virtual hat.
Anybody have a Link to a speed reading site? I need a class or two...
Supposedly, the key is to turn off the inner voice that you hear in your head when you read. I can't turn off ANY of the voices in my head, so I'm not sure how you're expected to do that.
The description of the origin of religion as a way to explain physical phenomena is inaccurate, I think. I feel it's much more a psychological phenomenon.
Have you read William James on the subject? I like his idea of the tremendum.
tl:dr, you have made many snotty comments about how religion is unnecessary and should be done away with, it took me a while to get sick of them to the point where I challenged you on them
I won't make that mistake again, I'll start immediately
Heh. I can read faster than anyone I know but I have no idea how I do it.
Sorry.
It's actually not that hard. You just have to be willing to give yourself a few headaches trying before it "clicks". The basic trick is to skip from recognizing individual words as atomic units, to phrases, and then sentences. Your brain totally has the wiring to do it, it just requires the effort and a little practice.

EXCEPT it still does not fill the need in lower Manhattan for a community center and large mosque for this specific group.
(and once again the folks who live in Manhattan support the Mosque/Community Center.)

Nobody actually reads by recognizing individual words as atomic units, though. I mean, nobody who's past barely-literate.
BTW, the troll ass who said the President "sticks his nose" in places he should not...it is called answering a question.
He was asked questions and he answered.
shocker!
The wingnut in question is calling it a "leadership vacuum" because there has been no leadership. The mayor has been utterly silent on the issue since he hosted the dinner 3 weeks ago with 100 Muslim luminaries. And Mayor Bloomberg essentially recanted his statement that implied that too many New Yorkers were "bigoted" on this issue.
Further, Mayor Bloomberg stated publicly, that the issue of building the Mosque at its originally intended location represented "one of the most important issues facing America today (paraphrasing)" -- and he has said essentially nothing on the issue since then.
That's not leadership. That's ducking. And that has contributed to a "leadership vacuum."
CNN thinks the Pastor wanted a way out, got a agreement to a meeting and that was it. Once he has his meeting, he can go back to his cult.
Makes the most sense. He didn't figure his little stunt would get more than a by-line, instead found himself in deep shit, and now tries to make himself out as a "peacemaker."
Can we maybe have this guy committed for psychiatric evaluation? I think he's delusional, to such an extent he constitutes a danger to himself and others.
Nobody actually reads by recognizing individual words as atomic units, though. I mean, nobody who's past barely-literate.
Maybe it's about realizing that.
Well, honestly, I don't know what it is exactly, but I can do it, and it requires a lot more concentration than regular reading, but it isn't "harder" per se. Turn off the inner voice, and sort of let your brain take it in in larger "chunks" than you are normally used to. Also I have noticed that my eyes don't follow the lines across, they sort of stare at the middle of the page and go down. Let your peripheral visions work for you.
It is also worth noting that it doesn't work at all if the material you are reading is difficult to comprehend, because that kind of processing still takes time. It works perfectly for long legal documents, newspapers, and the like.
I think I know what you mean by 'leadership vacuum". You mean they should have told Rauf to move the damn thing. Otherwise, what did you want them to say/do?
I certainly didn't mean to hurt his feelings, and if I did, I apologize.
Nevertheless saying 'if you guys aren't nice I'm gonna leave!' is always unacceptable BS, and should always be called out.
Agreed, I don't want him to leave, I just really cannot stand the whole "religions are for explaining physical phenomenon hah ha stupid religious people! Get you some science"
So many snarky internet chip on their shoulder athiests use that
Capitalism and bigotry often go hand in hand, congratulations daddy-o
I hope you aren't implying a causal relationship. There are more than a few commnist countries that are convinced of their genetic and racial superiority too.
It isn't their ideological/political tilt. I could care less. Everyone in the media has an agenda (Think MSNBC) that reflects a desired demographic.
What really bothers me are the kinds of stories that FOX is fixated on. Everything lately seems to focus on the marginalization of groups.
First it is the Park51 Muslims. That has morphed into a more general ant Muslim sentiment.
Then there is the issue of illegal immigrants. Now there is no problem with the idea that our borders need to be secure, but as of late, FOX seems to take the position that illegals are what is destroying the economic foundation of the country (which laughable! We have a lot more to worry about from the Chinese trashing trade agreements than we do from illegals from Front Chihuahua.
Lastly, there is the personal demonitization of President Obama.
I don't care if he's called a socialist, communist or anything else. I don't agree with some of his politics, but to say the President (ANY President) is a liar, unless proven otherwise is outrageous. Mr Obama is the Prewsident of the United States. He has earned respect by virtue of free elections. He may have instituted policies that are unpopular to many but he has not desecrated the office.
He has been forced to reiterate his citizen ship- and has been called a liar. He has been forced to state his religion- and he is called a liar. THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS.
FOX News can cover the Presidency as critically as they want- in fact, good on them for doing just that! Media is supposed to give government a critical eye.. However, to imply that the President is untruthful and promulgate that with a consistent menu of idiot talking heads and trumped up and misrepresented news stories is a whole other thing.
FOX News needs to clean up it's act. They can criticize the administration's policies. They can debate illegal immigration responsibly and they can sure as hell talk about Islam and radical Islam in away that does not deliberately blend the two or obfuscate the great line that divides them.
Shit, maybe this place is having more of an impact than I realized. I'm no lefty, but FOX doesn't reflect my values any more than does MSNBC.

So you want the government involved in every religious and personal decision you make? That's not conservative or liberal. That's just fucking stupid.
The leaders made the decision that it isn't any of their fucking business, because it isn't. Sometimes leading means knowing the limits of your power.
This isn't speed reading class?! Uh oh, I have been in the wrong place all these months!
Heh, How are ya Hoops?
What up Brother? Football starts tonight.. My house is pretty much packed and ready for the Movers...Winston is walking around completely confused and all it takes is a doggie treat to get him calmed down..
How are you?
That's not what he said, though. He said you'd made him feel that stating his opinions on religion were unwanted, so he'd leave.
I think it's all rather a tempest in a teacup.
It went from the asperger thing to you hate me because I'm an athiest (which is a riot, because I think I have more irreligious friends than religious) and then I explained no, and now it's this
I want all of you to know that my new Cordoba acquisition will once again transform New York City while ushering a new era of luxury and taste to Ground Zero.
I will erect a luxury condo tower adjacent to the Freedom Tower called the Trump Freedom Isn't Free Tower.
This tower will have a design that tastefully celebrates our peaceful partnership with Middle Eastern Mega Millionaires. The condos will be appointed with only the finest things that petro-dollars, abusive regimes and nepotism can buy.
I think religion is mainly used to explain what being a human is. It's not like some guy saw lightning and decided to make up gods. Some guy looked around at the world, said, "What the hell is this?" and decided that, just as he was a mind who could create, there was a larger mind out there that had created this.
I feel it was a mistaken conclusion to come to. But it was an attempt, an honest one, to deal with the largest issue every human faces: existence.
That does it...I'm burning my copy of Mr. Boston unless somebody moves John Boehner out of Congress.
And I'm burning my copy of Origin of the Species unless someone can prove beyond reasonable doubt that Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, and Michele Bachmann are one.
Pastor Terry Jones said Thursday that he decided to cancel his protest because the leader of a planned Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its controversial location. The agreement couldn't be immediately confirmed.

See, that's a great way of putting it right there!
I am not athiest, but I am essentially irreligious, and I still think of the same things, being a creative person who is wondering about how far up the chain the act of creation goes (and then I get into stoner logic and nobody wants me to do that)
Here's a thought: What if this is a not-particularly-bright man who had read a few editorials, and really thought this is what they meant should be done?
Like there was a wave, and he really thought he was riding it.
Right about now some Vulcan is observing Earth from afar thinking to himself, "fascinating."
/
That's only part of the thought. The rest is "Fascinating, that a species this ignorant has managed to survive as long as it has without nuking itself to the verge of extinction."
Co-worker is apparently following this with his iPhone, as he just blurted out, "Whoah, my Twitter just exploded!" I told him that would make him go blind, because I'm basically 12.
I think our apprehension with our own mortality created religion. To give meaning to meaninglessness.
yeah, but there's a lot of people of faith who are not so concerned about mortality, it's bigger than that
it's frameworks for observing the world, trying to contextualize experience itself, just as individual experiences are contexturalized in one's own life
That's only part of the thought. The rest is "Fascinating, that a species this ignorant has managed to survive as long as it has without nuking itself to the verge of extinction."
This also explains why the aliens don't come out and show themselves. Ya gotta figure that any species capable of interstellar travel is savvy enough to give a species like ours a wide berth.
I think our apprehension with our own mortality created religion. To give meaning to meaninglessness.
Exactly...God is simply a metaphor for the self, and what we cite when we need to explain the unexplainable. Saying "Fuck if I know" when your child asks what happens when we die isn't as reassuring as "We all go to heaven and eat gummy bears"...

About that line of Stewart's, that Miss Universe is always from Earth:
Someday, there's a really big discrimination lawsuit coming.

You know, I haven't really thought about it until now, but I don't think I ever really did have a little voice that reads "out loud" in my head. I guess maybe thats why it was not hard for me to "speed read".
Maybe I did when I first learned to read, I don't remember.
When you listen to what a wacko preacher who plans burn the Koran day has to say - that they are moving the community center in new york - the news made its first mistake. Clarifications now:
1. Community center not being moved.
2. Pastor never spoke to NY imam, but rather to a Florida imam who talked to NY imam's wife about meeting.
3. Meeting not yet scheduled between wacko pastor and imam in NY.
The media is tripping all over itself with false stories and clarifications.
New claim on news: Trump is buying part of building for 25% more than community center developers to prevent the community center from being built? That according to the news, which has a bad track record today.
Exactly...God is simply a metaphor for the self, and what we cite when we need to explain the unexplainable. Saying "Fuck if I know" when your child asks what happens when we die isn't as reassuring as "We all go to heaven and eat gummy bears"...

Not so sure of that. There's no great comfort in knowing or believing that the universe was created from nothing by a Being altogether unknowable to reason, and Whose very existence is known by way of terrifying and inexplicable revelations.
Prediction: the meme on the right will be that the pastor was intimidated or threatened either by some part of the government, or by some Islamic terrorist.
Well, anyone can claim to be unconcerned about their mortality, especially when they adhere to a belief system that they believe grants them immortality and meaning.

I don't think so.
.
No...at this point, it's the principle of the thing. The principles of freedom of association and of religion, guaranteed by the Constitution to everyone (not just "Christians") will have been discounted in the eyes of the world if the bigots and xenophobes win on this.
The haters, bigots, and xenophobes might as well come out and tell Muslims to get to the back of the proverbal bus...

That's the reason why I've never liked the "hooked on phonics" type methods of teaching kids to read. Sure, it might be easier short term, but in the long run it will make them slower readers and make it hard to overcome the subvocalization. It's a parenting disagreement me and my wife have ;)
To give you an example of how I will transform Park51 into a tasteful oasis of luxury that coexists with the hallowed ground that is Ground Zero, I am attaching this example of my lead designers fantastic work here in New York.

I think of hooked on phonics as the kind of thing you supplement a kid's education with if he is having trouble learning the normal way. If it is any consolation, I was slow to learn to read, took me like a year longer than the other kids to get it, and now I speed read. So, you know, every kid is different.

I always thought hooked on phonics was the thing you default to when normal methods aren't working, and some way of reading is better than illiteracy
I'm fine. D_L is fine, not posting much, our main computer is in for an overhaul and major upgrade. Glad to hear your travels. Winston goes with you on this one right?

I didn't start reading any quicker than anyone else, either.
My retention is also off the hook. I can remember things i read once ten years ago.
I really didn't do anything to earn the ability, I don't think. It's just normal to me.

Good to hear..Yup we making the Road trip together
Austin, Texas, or, really, ANYPLACE in Texas. We gots more beer and music than we know what to do with.
Austin does NOT HAVE OUR BEER SCENE DO NOT DELUDE YOURSELF
Portland annihalates Texas at the GABF, we have more breweries here than Munich does. This town runs on beer.
Austin DOES have a fantastic music scene, it's considered to be our sister city and I would live there if I were forced for some reason to not live in Oregon

My meme prediction:
Pastor Jones cancelled the Koran burning in an inexpected gesture of good will, but the evil Park 51 developers refused to "meet him halfway" and still won't move the mosque. This can only be interpreted as a slap in the face of all Christian Americans.
I retain nothing :D And that includes stuff I make, I literally have gone back in my archives and gone "where did this come from?"
WUB - I retain nothing, as well.
I can read something, and the minute I put it down - the general gist I can recall but the details are gone, gone, gone.

Or they think we're a really nifty ant farm and they don't want to taint the sample
If another race found us, it's because they have the ability to traverse vast reaches of space, which means they have far more technology than we do, and they've probably brought along multiple-planets' worth of goodies to squash us with
Alas, Charles, this post is hypocritical; as the saying goes, this is the money shot:
Appeasing this psychotic freak would set a terrible precedent. I'm amazed they're even considering this; but it's a measure of how seriously the administration regards the threat of worldwide violence.
A pastor of a 50-member church deciding to burn a Koran in the United States should really only pass as local news. The decision of some nutball to exercise his First Amendment rights in an offensive manner should simply pass with little notice as part of the daily nuttery that occurs all over the world.
The act is in no way an incitement to violence. Instead, the incitement to violence is the in the hands of those choosing to express their offense violently.
You have been pointing out that the anti-'Ground Zero Mosque' (GZM) crowd have been encouraging an atmosphere of hate that has resulted in violent attacks against perceived Muslims and Islamic property.
However, if you were to be consistent with your sentiments expressed in this post, you would be calling on the backers of the GZM to halt the building of their center because it is causing nutballs around the US to engage in said violence. That would be wrong, we should never compromise the basic right of freedom of expression in face of those who would use violence to suppress it.
Apparently, the First Amendment rights of those building the GZM -- despite the fact that many Americans find it offensive (or use their 'offense' as a cover for their hate) -- is worth defending. However, the First Amendment rights of those wishing to burn Korans -- despite the fact that many Americans (and others around the world) find it offensive -- is not worth defending.
Freedom of expression is THE fundamental American right and the fundamental right necessary to a free and open society. Your decision to now inconsistently defend it, is saddening.
Just as the President stood up and said that building the GZM center is right guaranteed by the First Amendment, should he not equally stand up and say that burning a Koran is a right guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Your argument here is that First Amendment rights should be limited if the response of violent thugs is great.
If you were to apply your logic in this post to the GZM issue; if there was enough violence in response to the GZM, then it would be justified -- for example -- for the President stepping in and condemning the exercise of Americans' First Amendment rights.
I oppose both the anti-mosque creeps and Pastor Terry Jones for the same reason: because they're bigots. This isn't difficult to understand, and there's nothing hypocritical about it; it's completely consistent.
I said absolutely nothing about anyone's First Amendment rights, by the way. You constructed a huge straw man, attributing all kinds of arguments to me that I didn't make. Is that fun or something?
In every language, the first word after "Mama!" that every kid learns to say is "Mine!" A system that doesn't allow ownership, that doesn't allow you to say "Mine!" when you grow up, has -- to put it mildly -- a fatal design flaw. From the time Mr. Developing Nation was forced to read "The Little Red Book" in exchange for a blob of rice, till the time he figured out that waiting in line for a loaf of pumpernickel was boring as f*ck, took about three generations. ... Decades of indoctrination, manipulation, censorship and KGB excursions haven't altered this fact: People want a piece of their own little Something-or-Other, and, if they don't get it, have a tendency to initiate counterrevolution.
