Anti-Mosque Rally Attendance: Less Than 1,000

Wingnuts • Views: 4,793

According to the Associated Press, attendance at Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer’s international hate rally was less than 1,000: The Associated Press: Dueling demonstrations begin after 9/11 memorial.

After the ceremony, around 1,000 activists rallied about five blocks from the site of the 2001 attacks to support the proposed Islamic community center. A smaller group of opponents rallied nearby, chanting, “USA, USA.”

UPDATE at 9/11/10 6:27:36 pm:

Hilarious! Geller is claiming 40,000. Who could ever have predicted that?

UPDATE at 9/11/10 6:41:30 pm:

Pamela Geller’s closing words to the seething throng:

As the crowds dissipated, Geller warned them against talking to members of the media: “Do not give them any ammunition. You know who you are. You know that you’re righteous. Do not give them an opportunity to deride this fine and honorable effort. Remember what I’m saying. They’re looking to catch you. Don’t give it to them.”

Listen to Mommy,” she said.

No, no it wouldn't. I think we may have to deal with the bigots for a bit, but I'm reasonably certain good old American tolerance will win.

I hope I didn't offend anyone earlier.

I'm watching a 9-11 show in the History Channel. It's all personal video recordings from NYC during the attacks. There are no announcers on this show, just personal recordings. I feel like it's 9 years ago all over again. I am pissed off right now.

Despite the morons who choose this day to promote their malevolent moronacy, I am taken with the fact that this great country is not so greatly changed from 9/10/01 - though the opposing cliche persists. Life is a deal more sober for most of us as the time passes - despite the self-celebrating loons this day attracts that would try to argue otherwise. It is as it should be. The economic exuberance we then knew will eventually return, cycles being what they are. We can live with the tougher security and inconvenience at airports because we must. We can live with the unending war on religious fundamentalism because we must.

Out of curiousity, I checked out the Atlas blog. The pics are inconclusive from the angle they were taken. You only see about a block of a street that looks packed.

IndyBay is a website here in the Bay Area that is leftist, communist, anti-US, anti-Israel, you get the idea. It is notorious for inflating numbers at rallies and showing only the best photos of any given event.

The evil at work here is deception. It's PR and it's designed for one thing alone: propaganda. This rally was a test run, IMO.

And despite our recent problems, we're pretty welcoming.

[Link: edition.cnn.com...]

This is a great story. Two young Muslim men from NY spent Ramadan traveling the country, visiting other mosques and communities.

The fisherman in Montana became the embodiment of their trip -- Ali and Tariq were embraced nearly everywhere they went, from a Confederate souvenir shop in Georgia to the streets of Las Vegas, Nevada, to the hills of North Dakota where the nation's first mosque was built in 1929.

Like any road trip, there were strange moments along the way: A Mississippi police officer quizzed them about their beliefs on the ground zero mosque and they were asked to leave a mosque in Mobile, Alabama.

They chuckle about those experiences now and emphasize it shouldn't overshadow the whole trip because, ultimately, they discovered that America still embraces immigrants and the nation is filled with welcoming and loving people.

Apparently, that mosque had some problems with foreign visitors. The guys talk about it on the video at the link.

Mommy? That's weird. Over my beers I had with my dinner tonight I was thinking about for me what a year of contradictions 2001 was for me on a personal level and of course as an American. In 2001 my youngest brother was born and he's almost like a surrogate son to me. He looks up to me and I'm very protective of him. That same year my godmother who was just about the most kindest woman you could have known passed away. And of course 9-11 which we all know and then there was the jubliation I felt starting high school that year. It was a crazy time to be 14.

That same day in an Atlas Shrugs post, Pamela Geller reacted to the Times' article, writing: "I don't know what is more grotesque...jihad or the NY Times preening of it. The New York Times yet again misrepresents, obfuscates, and confuses infidels and kaffirs about Islam." In her post, Geller mostly discussed Sufism, the branch of Islam that Rauf and his followers belong to.

sufis? i don't know much about it, but my impression was that sufism is one of the least doctrinaire or militaristic of any branch of islam

Do not give them any ammunition. You know who you are. You know that you’re righteous. Do not give them an opportunity to deride this fine and honorable effort. Remember what I’m saying. They’re looking to catch you. Don’t give it to them.

But said this at her kooky website:

Media pretends these people don't exist. It's criminal.

Which is it? She want the media to operate under her own terms? And what's this BS about the media. She's been on Fox News numerous times and was even on CNN babbling away more than once. She's practically a regular at the New York Post.

re: #148 Gus 802

Right. Some people are so separated from reality that they can't accept that fact. Fox News is part of the MSM. For Entertainment play a big role in the "Hollywood establishment." Heck, Avatar, the movie they so much dislike, was a Fox production.

Right. There is a kind of disassociation here on all sides- whenever a news outlet will report on an event that is not liked, they are immediately marginalized.

In the case of FOX, they have deliberately blurred the line between news, entertainment and opinion. Same for MSNBC, but they are not as of yet quite as adept at it.

CNN is the only cable network where it is still pretty clear who does what, with a few exceptions (e.g., Rick Sanchez). How long that will last no one knows.

Which is kind of cool. When we did Greek mythology in my ninth grade class, I used to have the kids watch sections of 'Clash of the Titans' and 'Jason and the Argonauts', and tell them that this was what really great special effects looked like when Mrs. SFZ was a little girl.

196 HappyWarrior  Sat, Sep 11, 2010 7:34:19pm

You know, the problem isn't so much to me that Fox is biased. I think bias is something that's fairly unavoidable since news is done by human beings not by robots but Fox's problem to me is their bias gets in the way of their ability to report the news. They come across as right wing hacks to me.

Heh. South Park called it Dances With Smurfs. :D

Avatar was pretty enough, but I hated the story. It was typical James Cameron -- lacking all subtlety, preachy, and so obvious that I knew the ending before anything even really got going. It was like Titanic. Sure, I knew the boat was going to sink, but I also knew the rest of the ending before Kate Winslet even stepped on the boat.

My other issue with Avatar? The 3D was overwhelming. I was dizzy and nauseous with a killer headache, and for hours after seeing the film, not because of the awful story and cheesy dialogue, but because of the barrage of effects. Ugh. Never again.

No, the treaty that, IIRC, he drafted, makes it pretty clear he wasn't fighting Islam, he just didn't want any more American ships boarded. He was kind of finicky about that point.

Yeah, but the real Thomas Jefferson was too complex for Pam's limited IQ to process. So like Sarah Palin, she retreats into slogans.

Looks like a Saudi official is in trouble...

Saudi diplomat seeking asylum: 'My life is in danger'

A ranking Saudi diplomat told NBC News that he has asked for political asylum in the United States, saying he fears for his life if he is forced to return to his native country.

The diplomat, Ali Ahmad Asseri, the first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, has informed U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials that Saudi officials have refused to renew his diplomatic passport and effectively terminated his job after discovering he was gay and was close friends with a Jewish woman.

In a recent letter that he posted on a Saudi website, Asseri angrily criticized his country’s “backwardness” as well as the role of “militant imams” in Saudi society who have “defaced the tolerance of Islam.” Perhaps most provocatively of all, he has threatened to expose what he describes as politically embarrassing information about members of the Saudi royal family living in luxury in the U.S.

If he is forced to go back to Saudi Arabia — as Saudi officials are demanding — Asseri says he could face political persecution and even death.

“My life is in a great danger here and if I go back to Saudi Arabia, they will kill me openly in broad daylight,” Asseri said Saturday in an email to NBC.

This could get interesting.

That would never have made it in if Pam had been able to get Jefferson's administration a set of Robert Spencer's books.

Which is kind of cool. When we did Greek mythology in my ninth grade class, I used to have the kids watch sections of 'Clash of the Titans' and 'Jason and the Argonauts', and tell them that this was what really great special effects looked like when Mrs. SFZ was a little girl.

"Jason and the Argonauts" is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's a masterpiece in every possible way. If you're showing that to your students with satisfactory results, I think they could probably learn some things from The Elephant Man, too...

Battle of Derne

In 1804, the former Consul to Tunis, William Eaton, returned to the Mediterranean with the title of Naval Agent to the Barbary States. Eaton had been granted permission from the United States government to back the claim of Hamet Karamanli. Hamet Karamanli was the rightful heir to the throne of Tripoli and had been deposed by his brother Yussif Karamanli. Upon his return to the area, Eaton sought out Hamet Karamanli who was in exile in Egypt. Upon locating him, Eaton made a proposal to reinstate him on the throne. The exile agreed to Eaton's plan.[citation needed]

Commodore Samuel Barron, the new naval commander in the Mediterranean, provided Eaton with naval support from the USS Nautilus, the USS Hornet and the USS Argus. The three vessels were to provide offshore bombardment support. The Nautilus was commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry, the Hornet was commanded by Samuel Evans, and the Argus was commanded by Isaac Hull.[citation needed]

A detachment of U.S. Marines was given to Eaton under the command of Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon. Eaton and Hull made their base of operations at Alexandria, Egypt. There, with the help of Hamet Karamanli, they recruited about 500 Arab, Greek and Berber mercenaries. Eaton named himself general and commander-in-chief of the combined force.[citation needed]

General Eaton now led his army on a 500-mile trek across the Libyan desert. Their objective was the port city of Derne, the capital of the province of Cyrenaica. Supplies and money were promised to the largely mercenary force when they reached the city. During the 50-day trek Eaton became concerned with the relationship between the Christians and the roughly 200 or 300 Muslim mercenaries in his force. On several occasions mutiny threatened the success of the expedition. The force finally reached the port city of Bomba in late April, up the coast from Derne, where the Argus, the Nautilus and the Hornet along with Captain Hull were waiting. There Eaton and his force received supplies and money to pay the mercenaries.

Not that I know of, but he would have been against dissing other faiths IMHO. Here's his order about burning the Pope in effigy:

General Order of November 5, 1775 illustrate this fact:

"As the Commander in Chief has been apprized of a design form'd for the observance of that ridiculous and childish custom of burning the Effigy of the pope -- He cannot help expressing his surprise that there should be Officers and Soldiers in this army so void of common sense, as not to see the impropriety of such a step at this Juncture; at a Time when we are solliciting, and have really obtain'd, the friendship and alliance of the people of Canada, whom we ought to consider as Brethren embarked in the same Cause. The defence of the general Liberty of America: At such a juncture, and in such Circumstances, to be insulting their Religion, is so monstrous, as not to be suffered or excused; indeed instead of offering the most remote insult, it is our duty to address public thanks to these our Brethren, as to them we are so much indebted for every late happy Success over the common Enemy in Canada."

Note the date. The burning of the Pope in effigy was in lieu of burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes. In some parts of England, the effigy continued being that of the pope till World War I.

re: #285 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Interesting ending:
The Battle of Derne was the first recorded land battle of the United States on foreign soil after the American Revolutionary War.[1] The battle was the decisive action of the First Barbary War, although Eaton was angered by what he called a 'sell-out' between Consul Lear and the bey. Hamet returned to Egypt and the mercenaries were never fully paid.

She's trying to figure out a way to suggest that the Muslims did it.

Can I suggest that maybe we blame the utility? They had been warned repeatedly, over a span of weeks. This resembles, in miniature thank goodness, the story of that train accident in Russia some decade or so ago in which a train went through a valley that had become saturated with natural gas from a major leak.

There had been endless warnings and everybody had had ample chance to act. But nooooo. So, boom.

That primary will be fun to watch. Unless the GOP either gets lots of mainstream republicans to vote in it to balance out the insane teabaggers, or ends up actually fixing it, the chosen candidate will not have a chance in hell against Obama.

re: #90 HappyWarrior

It was a crazy time to be any age. Kind of like myself at age "almost 8" when JFK was shot, 12 when RFK and MLK were shot, 30 when Challenger blew up.

Plus, as you know now, 14 is a crazy age, period.

Purely by coincidence, I flew to Florida on family business (collecting some of my late father's stuff and bringing his car north) on 9/11/02. Very tense, very somber at the airports that day. I later realized that perhaps subconsciously, I was doing the right thing--being an American and going about my business. Perhaps it was because of a conversation we'd had when it happened, and his view that "If you change your life because you fear bastards like those, they win."

Even when I was young and a liberal (small l), I called Star Trek "Liberals In Space". It was meant as a compliment, believe it or not.

Although I always felt that if I were on the Enterprise, I'd be the guy in the red shirt who gets eliminated by the Alien-Of-The-Week in the first three minutes.
