Sometimes, I read Tea Party signs, and it seems they are written in a language that looks like English, but in fact is not English, but a new language - TeaPartyese. This explains the new definitions for words they come up with.

He imagines himself a patriot soldier of the Continental Army, no doubt. What he fails to grasp is how little he'd have liked that job. I don't think they've thought that far ahead.

My guess is they think that if Obama is impeached and removed from office that a Republican like Caribou Barbie or Luap Nor would replace him. It may not dawn on them that Biden would then be President and he would be able to choose his own VP.

No, I think the House chooses a new VP (e.g., Ford). Pelosi is third in line of succession but doesn't become VP.

The wish to remove Obama is much like the "Impeach Bush" signs way back when...I could never believe that the people who had put up those signs would be happy with President Cheney.

16 Kronocide  Sun, Sep 12, 2010 3:50:16pm

Not really. The Speaker gets the job if both the Prez and Veep die.

If the Prez dies in office, the Veep ascends. If the Veep dies or quits (see Spiro Agnew), the Prez can appoint. In Nixon's case, he chose Ford, who was Speaker, who then chose Rockefeller when Nixon resigned (not the new Speaker).

Only catch is that in addition to subscribing you'll need to be registered at LGF, and you'll have to let me know your username so I can manually enable that feature for you, until the automatic code is ready. (I think there's a way to set up callbacks with Paypal so that when you subscribe I can have it pass back the info needed to automatically set the flag in your user record ... but I have to check.)

Yes, there's a decent political novel about this happening, only in that one the Senate President pro tempore succeeds - Irving Wallace's The Man. Controversial at the time (1964) because the man who became President in the novel was also African-American. It's not a great novel but it's interesting, especially in light of today, given all the opposition to the first African-American President.

re: #14 Lidane

I think that's only if the VP dies or is removed from office. Don't hold me to that, but I think that's how it works.

The VP becomes President if the President dies or becomes incapacitated. The new President then nominates his/her own VP, who must be confirmed by the Senate. The Speaker of the House does NOT become VP unless he/she is nominated by the President, and becomes President only if the President and VP die or become incapacitated simultaneously or in such short order that a new VP has not been nominated and confirmed.

Example: When VP Agnew resigned, President Nixon nominated House Minority Leader Ford, who was confirmed by the Senate. When President Nixon resigned, VP Ford became President, then nominated NY Governor Rockefeller to become VP, who was then confirmed by the Senate.

He imagines himself a patriot soldier of the Continental Army, no doubt. What he fails to grasp is how little he'd have liked that job. He'd be strictly drilled and disciplined by von Steuben, and battle would consist of firing volleys on command. I can't see many of these teabaggers doing well under military discipline.

I have little doubt most of them would learn what the penalty for desertion was.

Hi--back from travels.

Ft. Knox is at various times a middle-sized city, about the sixth-to-tenth largest in Ky. It had about 60,000 troops when I did basic there in the Pleistocene. From reading recent Ron Paul/Gold threads it's obvious a lot of people confuse the gold repository, which is on the Fort but has very little to do with it, with the base itself. Oddly, the Washington's artillerist was Knox, but the Army's "Home of Artillery" is Ft. Sill OK. Ft Knox is (was) the "Home of Armor".

Another problem is that too many homes have only one parent. That does weigh against a child doing well. I'm not making a policy prescription, just noting for the record.

If the parent in the home makes education a priority, encourages learning, sets a good example, and creates an evironment where learning is possible, the kids will do well regardless whether there is one parent, two, or two complete households. The problem is, many of the people who are single parents are because they are selfish and tend not to think about the future. Irresponsible people make bad parents. Of course, I'm biased as I am a single parent. But that's my take.

Hopefully, at some point in the future, America will look back at the Birther phenomenon with clear eyes. And maybe then realize and admit what an utter embarrassment it's been that Obama had to put with this garbage.

I can only assume that republican denials of birtherism are so weak for two reasons. First, it's not in their DNA to say anything nice about Obama (even if that only amounts to "he was born in America"). And second, they want to reap the benefits electorally in 2012 of the 10-20% of the population that thinks he was born in Kenya or on Mars.

Oh, for fuck sakes. These people are out of their freaking minds.

First cousin marriages has not been banned in Christian countries and it is only a problem when little marriage outside the family occurs over extended periods of time, like in royal families.

"A huge Muslim problem: inbreeding"

Inbreeding.

Bryan Fischer is nuts.

Last week, the American Family Association's Bryan Fischer followed-up his call from last year to purge all Muslims from the US military with a call to purge all Muslims from the United States in general.

Today, Fischer has returned to defend his call for all Muslims in the United States to be deported immediately by claiming that every Muslim has a "solemn, sacred obligation to kill as many of their hosts as possible" and it is therefore "a form of suicidal insanity" to allow them to stay in the US .

Fischer admits that while not every single Muslim is out to destroy the US, since we can't know which ones are ahead of time, it only makes sense to view "every new Muslim immigrant [as a] potential threat to the safety and security of the United States" and to treat all Muslims citizens as traitors.[Link: www.rightwingwatch.org...]

Inbreeding theories are very handy to give a scientific patina to racial discrimination against the ethnic target du jour. Not surprisingly, almost identical accusations were used to disparage the Ashkenazi for decades (and still are, but mainstream politicians have learned to stay away from the people that make them).

Poor kid. He's going to be mighty embarrassed when he grows up, I think.

I heard somebody suggest that he might be autistic at one poitn...

It's unkind to say so and I suppose it smacks of me as a liberal punishing success, but I mean what kind of normal kid has a best selling POLITICAL book before they turn 15? The teen years are suppose to be for writing crappy sci-fi and Tolkien rip offs.

(I do wish poor Mr. Krohn all the best though...)

Also is it just me or does Dr. Ergun Caner look a bit like Kane from C&C?

No, I mean have you really never heard the lower classes called that? I mean, I've been hearing about red necks marrying their cousins since I was a kid. I know I read once such comment a day on the Yahoo posts. Coming from both Liberals and Conservatives.

I've heard such jokes from comedians a thousand times. Including Jeff Foxworthy.

I remember that he didn't know it was live at the time. Although my memory fails me a lot lately.

You're correct, he didn't know it was a live microphone. However, he was man enough to say that (a) it wasn't the smartest thing to say AND (b) it was a joke all the way. There was a lot of fuss about it, but ultimately no harm. I think even the Soviets knew it was a joke.

Krohn became interested in politics at age eight, after hearing about a Democratic filibuster on judicial nominations in the United States Senate. The event prompted him to research American history and governmental rules and policies, and he developed an affinity for conservatism and began to listen regularly to conservative talk radio, particularly Morning in America with William Bennett, to whom he became a regular caller.[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Really, I am not. You must not have read my first post on the subject. It is disgusting. I was pointing out, further down the thought line, that people overuse that slur and maybe ought to think about it before they do. Jeff Foxworthy gets away with it because he is skewering his own. He doesn't apply it to other people. Frankly, I am sick of hearing that hillbillies and southerners (and I am not even southern) etc. are stupid and inbred. Some are stupid...not too many are inbred...the percentages are no greater than anywhere else. It's a convenient way to dismiss a whole class of people.

At 15 I liked Sword of Truth books, which is like what you get if you take Ayn Rand's politics and set in a Tolkien like world...

I kid, Wizard's first rule isn't political at all and neither is Stone of Tears....

The series doesn't really jump the shark till Naked Empire, though the 7th book wasn't very good either, and god damn it something tells me I'd still enjoy Faith of the Fallen even if it is blatant capitalist propaganda....

I wish adolescence could just be skipped.

It's a chaotic time and the best/worst time of our lives IMO. Our ability to reason runs smack into our hormonal urges, and if we don't have the former, we still have the latter.

I won't say I liked or enjoyed it, but I was smart enough to not suppress it. I went with the flow, put education and socialization in their respective places, and worked toward what I thought was a reasonable goal--survival.

As far as I'm concerned, adolescence should never be skipped. If you can survive it, you should be in good shape afterward.

The Republicans may take the house. They will gain seats. As far as them getting the majority that's still in the air. Even if the GOP took the House and Senate Obama still holds the pen. Which of course will drive them bats.

Oh, hell, DF, that describes adolescence in general!

Put it behind you, and move on.

But what do you mean "most of your life"?
You decide now, how you want to be tomorrow, and then wake up and be that way!

That's right. You must do the thing you think you cannot do and do it to the best of your ability.

I was tired of being single and I forced myself out there, shyness and all. I'm fed up with not doing what I really want to do with regard to a real career, so I'm going to plunge into some lovely debt and go to culinary school.

In the words of Ben Stiller who starred in the comedic remake of Starsky and Hutch, "do it."

Oh, correct.
I have to take an anti-anxiety med, otherwise, I freak out over - nothing. Just get terribly nervous about silly things - like, if I get on the Interstate and drive, is my tire going to blow out and put me in a wreck? I mean really, that's silly, it could happen but most likely it will NOT happen.

But there is something to be said, also, for making a conscious decision to accept yourself, learn to poke fun at yourself for whatever eccentricities you have.

My "aha!" moment came when I took a Myers-Briggs personality thingie, and learned I am about the most introverted of introverts. No wonder I have a just a couple of friends, instead of scads and scads of people I like to be with! There's nothing wrong with me - I'm just not wired to be the life of the party.

So I think there are things DF can do to stop worrying so much.

Perhaps they used a basketball because it's well known that it's President Obama's favorite sport. Or because a baseketball is light, the right size, and cheap. My money is on the latter.

Please...

Democrats will take a drumming in 2010.

Republicans take control of the house.

Republicans are asked to find a way forward...

Republicans go back to policy's of W which worked so well the first time.

Republians think since they won the mid-terms they should quadruple down on the crazy.

Crazy McLoon gets nominated for presidential run 2012.

Sane people flock to poles to vote D, Obama wins second term, Democrats get even bigger majorities than in 2008.
