New Feature: Ad-Free Subscriptions to LGF

LGF • Views: 47,267

I’m excited to announce a new feature; starting today, if you subscribe to LGF through Paypal for $10 a month, all of the advertisements on all LGF pages will be turned off.

This isn’t just a cosmetic improvement; to display those ads from Google Adsense and Amazon, we have to make several calls to external web servers, which take quite a bit of time. And if those servers are slow or offline, it can cause the entire LGF page to load more slowly or even time out on rare occasions.

When you view our site with advertisements turned off, every page loads more quickly; it’s a very noticeable speed boost. (And as the designer of this mess, I have to say it looks a lot nicer too without the visual clutter.)

So, for the very low price of about 33 cents a day (less than the cheapest cup of Starbucks coffee), you can read LGF without the ads, at super-charged speed.

In order to enable this feature, you will also need to have an account registered at LGF; that’s how our code knows that you’re a Paypal subscriber. Registration is now open, and will remain open except for maintenance.

Here’s the link to subscribe at Paypal. Sign up now to start surfing LGF without ads right away!

Important: after you subscribe, please use the contact form in our left sidebar to let me know your registered LGF username, so I can enable your subscription flag. (I’m working on making this procedure more automatic, but for now I’ll be doing it manually. Update: The process is now automated! See below.)

UPDATE at 9/13/10 11:29:19 am:

Here’s a list of all the ads you won’t be seeing if you subscribe:

  • The top banner ad next to the logo
  • The right sidebar “skyscraper” ads
  • The two Blogads slots in the right sidebar
  • The 300x250 ad after the first post on the front page, and after the post on each individual page
  • The Amazon interstitial ads
  • The bottom Amazon banner
  • The “partners” ads at the bottom of the left sidebar
  • The “sponsored links” at the bottom of the right sidebar
  • The ad for the LGF Cookbook

UPDATE at 9/13/10 11:37:38 am:

Some testimonials from subscribers:

Gingrich: Obama Wants Whitey’s Money

Why do Forbes (which presumably has many choices of cover material) and Gingrich imagine that such a message will resonate with their conservative audience? Nothing more offends conservatives than liberal accusations of racial animus. Yet here is racial animus, unconcealed and unapologetic, and it is seized by savvy editors and an ambitious politician as just the material to please a conservative audience. That’s an insult to every conservative in America.

Tea Party extremists target RINOs

Tom Ross, Delaware GOP Chair, Threatened With 'Bullet In The Head'

The chairman of the Delaware Republican Party received a death threat last week over his support for Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del) over Tea Party challenger Christine O'Donnell in the state's upcoming Senate primary, a party official confirmed to the Huffington Post.

The threat, issued in the form of an email, told chairman Tom Ross that he deserves "a bullet in the head" for backing "political ass-kissing RINO's" [Republicans in name only].

"It is one thing to have your country screwed over by socialists, it is far worse to be backstabbed by people pretending to be your friends," the email read. "We will either rid the GOP of pieces of shit like you, or we will start a new 'Common Sense Conservative' party and render you all useless."

Cuba to eliminate 500,000 state jobs, spur private sector

HAVANA — Cuba will let more than 500,000 state employees go by next March and try to move most to non-state jobs in the biggest shift to the private sector since the 1960s, the official Cuban labor federation said Monday.

The layoffs will start immediately and run through the first half of next year, according to an announcement Monday by the nearly 3 million-strong Cuban Workers Confederation — the only labor union the government tolerates.

The statement said eventually more than a million jobs would be cut and, due to efforts to increase efficiency in the state sector, there would be few new state sector openings.

More than 85 percent of the Cuban labor force, or over 5 million people, worked for the state at the close of 2009, according to the government.

"Our state cannot and should not continue maintaining companies, productive entities, services and budgeted sectors with bloated payrolls (and) losses that hurt the economy," the statement said.

"Job options will be increased and broadened with new forms of non-state employment, among them leasing land, cooperatives and self-employment, absorbing hundreds of thousands of workers in the coming years," it said.

"If Ms. O’Donnell and Mr. Lamontange were both to win their primaries, however, the Republican chances of a Senate takeover would fall to just 16 percent, according to the model. Conversely, if Mr. Castle and Ms. Ayotte were to win, Republicans chances would rise to 30 percent. "

Mike Castle trailing Christine O'Donnell in poll: What's going on?

Delaware as a whole is not a conservative state, after all, and Castle presumably would do much better with the state’s overall electorate than with the subset of Republicans. At the Five Thirty Eight blog, polling expert Nate Silver predicts that Castle, if he wins the primary, would have a 95 percent chance of beating Democratic nominee Chris Coons.

If O’Donnell wins the primary, she would have only a 17 percent change of winning the general election, according to Silver.
