A very good effort from the autotune folks this time. @1:25 the singer from weezer (I don't know his name) does an epic performance probably 15 feet away from the mic with no reverb or processing. Nice pipes.
Also they pulled the most awesome line from Weiner's smackdown...

Where in the hell did he learn to smack someone around like that with parliamentary procedure?

A real hero does an interview...

EXCLUSIVE: 1st Living Medal of Honor Winner Since Vietnam Tells His Story

America's first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War says the heroic actions he undertook in Afghanistan are as brave as what every American soldier experiences day in and day out during their tours of duty in that country.

Last week, Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta was named as the first living recipient of America's highest medal for valor since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The previous seven awards have been posthumous.

In his first broadcast network interview since being named to receive the honor, Giunta told ABC News' Martha Raddatz that America's forces in Afghanistan act with "immense bravery" doing "above and beyond anything that should ever be asked of them."

Third Iranian Diplomat Defects

Amidst increasing international pressure on Iran’s nuclear program, and continued controversy for the delayed release of one of three American hikers, reports come of a third Iranian diplomat defecting in Europe.

Farzad Farhangian, the press attaché at the Iranian Embassy in Brussels, left the embassy and defected to Norway on Friday, AP reported.

Farhangian follows the defections of two other Iranian diplomats, Hossein Alizadeh, who defected last Monday; and Mohammed Reza Heydari, who defected in January.

"I don't consider myself anymore a diplomat standing beside a brutal Iranian regime," said Alizadeh in an interview with the AP.

The defections symbolize the Iranian regime’s power slipping further and further from a people with exceedingly high discontent for the ruling power, say analysts.

Autotunes is to this decade what electronic percussion was to the 80's...the slow death of pop music.

But the AT was used here creatively and to great effect, unlike most of its applications on the airwaves.

On the first point... using Auto-Tune to make your voice sound all weird and robotic is a relatively new trend, although I do realise that the technology has been used for pitch correction in the past.

On the second point, I have no idea what you are actually trying to say. That I can just close my ears and pretend that something doesn't annoy me?

No, it's not the worst thing ever, and as far as daily irritations go it's relatively easily ignored. But since the original subject of this thread involves Auto-Tune, I thought I would add my two cents on the current use of the technology. You don't have to agree. :)

I neither agree or disagree, you either give it the power to annoy you or you don't. But I do agree it is annoying for sure.

Yeah, I do appreciate the comedic aspect of this. And it is way better than it is on the airwaves.

Interesting comparison to electronic percussion. I suppose that they both have a similar effect of making everything sound samey, although I think that AT is far worse in this regard.

It's the Green People, working house by house, mom's canasta partner's husband's cousin's neighbor finally being persuaded when he heard what the basij did to his nephew's babysitter's boyfriend's professor... and they each told two people, and they each told two people...

All we need to do is not be caught taking any action at all. Maybe drop a comment every now and then, as long as we're appropriately subtle about it.

It was the same syndrome, a popular artist uses it for effect (as Linda Ronstadt did with electronic whoompy drums and Cher with the auto tune) and lesser artists start emulating them by slapping it on with a trowel.

James Dobson would not approve!

It's a good nude shot, but definitely veers into the erotic. A year or so ago someone (a photo student) asked me why I don't shoot nudes - and I said I don't like shooting people. (Nudes are a very difficult subject.) Another person (photographer) said I should shoot erotica - sounds even more difficult!

In both cases the people were ... women! Yes, really. Maybe I should have taken it as hints...

Late night lizards, my home buying search continues. The house I would love to get, SWMBO does not like. The house she likes, I am ehh. The house that is number two for both of us is at the upper end, if not above, what I qualify for, and my mortgage guy is not answering email or phone calls. She wants newer houses, and the area I am looking at needs to be less then 5 miles from my mother's house, since I am mowing, and shoveling snow, does not have a lot of new houses, since it was mostly developed in the 40s and 50s. Bedrooms were smaller, closets were smaller, and there were fewer open floorplans that you see in modern houses.

None of the neighborhoods are bad, two of the three are ethnically diverse that I can see right away, and all three probably are. My favorite house has over a quarter acre of lawn, and number two is just under, which is strange, since i have hated mowing since I had to start mowing my parents lawn.

What is troubling to me, the homes I like the most, have the best yards, and I am not really a fan of "The Big Blue Room". I should really be looking for a house with a gas stove, fully remodeled interiors, etc, and ethernet wiring installed, along with wireless access.

K, WUB, you have great taste, (guessing that anyone who wears a costume that Bjork would drape around her shoulders has great taste).

This or this?

(not being snarky on the Bjork comment, i think the swan outfit achieved what it wanted. attention, and a fashion attack or attack on mainstream fashion)

I love Bjork and her swan outfits :D

I also love Lady gagas bizarro futurist latex outfits, very cool

That would be the living room. the room beyond is the sunroom with the three floor to ceiling windows, and there is a fireplace on the other side. I think that the sunroom was the original patio, and it was enclosed, since the hallway is exposed brick on the back of the garage.

The other link, the house has wainscotting all around and has a combo country house, 50s post war feel. That is because it was actually built that way. The back was the original, and the kitchen, livingroom was added on in the late 40s, early 50s. That is the house I really want, and I can't explain it other than it feels like my great grandmother's house. And it is nothing like her house, it is just a feeling. The only way I could explain it to my mother is that the reason she had my father buy the mountain property they built on, was that it reminded her of the house that the same great grandmother had in a different town, when my mother was growing up. The same woman evokes a feeling of home in both my mother and myself, but from two different houses we knew from the same stages in our lives.

The psychology of houses and living spaces is very interesting to me! I've slowly figured out I am not all that particular about how my living space is shaped, but I'm obsessed with light and the lighting in rooms. I dig the creaky Portland craftsman homes that are all over here, they all have big porches, and porches are always a good thing :D

...but I'm obsessed with light and the lighting in rooms.

Over the years I've discovered that I prefer bright rooms - like windows. That is second only to quiet (no street noises or neighbor noises.)

Like you, the shape per se has not been a big thing with me. I do hate narrow doorways, though.

96 boredtechindenver  Tue, Sep 14, 2010 1:57:43am

I know of only one craftsman style house in the area I grew up in. It was for sale 3 or 4 times in the last 10 years, and I am sure it had a cracked foundation. I still wanted to buy it, but never looked at buying.

Oh FUCK not me, I go nuts if rooms are too bright :D

I like lots of indirect light aimed at walls so as not to create strong shadows, strong shadows are my enemy when I'm drawing, and bright rooms play havoc with reflections on my computer, and I like ambient colored light, so little Ikea LEDs, christmas lights, etc

I actually don't really notice the lack of quiet, I live near a freeway and have loud (though nice) neighbors, I just spend too much time on headphones, I just tune the world out, the quietest place I ever lived (Maple Valley, WA) was almost conspicuously quiet, it sorta made me unconfortable, like every noise I made was twice as loud

Sushi is ok, but buying it in Japan spoiled it for me buying it here in the US. Sorry, but the local stuff is just not up to snuff.

Last night I had some Coho, wild caught too. Generally lots of the fish in the local markets is not that good - even though San Diego is a port town. The fishing fleets just aren't based here anymore, and the "fresh" fish is mostly frozen, farm raised (usually Canada).

The house I'm in now was bought because it 'felt' right. Wasn't exactly what I was looking for in terms of style. It's actually quite a unique style for a really old house. A real fixer upper too. The feeling hit right when I drove up. I wanted this house before I even went inside. Walking into it, even though it was a mess and totally stank it just felt like my house and something that could be a home. My hubby thought I was insane when I first brought him to it because he focused on the absolute mess until we'd been then for a bit. He then fell in love with it too. The hardest part was ignoring the feeling and going over the reality of it's condition and inspection to see if it was worthwhile financially to get in terms of what would have to be done to fix it. Thankfully that part worked out fine because the 'feeling' was so strong.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

'Ground Zero mosque' Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf sued by Union City, NJ

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — An imam at the center of a dispute over plans to build a mosque near ground zero is being sued by a northern New Jersey community where he owns two apartment buildings.

A New Jersey newspaper reports the lawsuit was filed Monday in state Superior Court by Union City, which is just across the Hudson River from New York and has about 70,000 residents. It says the lawsuit charges Feisal Abdul Rauf hasn't addressed complaints by tenants and orders from the city to correct code violations.

The lawsuit identifies Rauf as sole officer of building owner Sage Development LLC. One building has been vacant since a 2008 fire. The other contains 16 apartments.

The newspaper says repeated calls to Rauf's home telephone in North Bergen were met with busy signals.

Rauf's cell phone voicemail inbox isn't accepting messages.

What I read is a lot of suggestions of things that restaurants and people can do to help promote better eating and suggestions that can help people have the opportunity for making choices. Apples as a side dish option instead of just automatically french fries? Great idea. Hell even Micky D's is doing that one. Doesn't mean you HAVE to have apples. A couple of restaurants where I live actually have changed their menus to offer these types of things as well as the old stand bys. One's and chain and one's and regular old Mom and Pop burger diner. Below is the nutritional info for all 4 Orange Juices
Tropicana: 48 cal; 11 gms Sugar, Vitamin C- 16 mg, Potassium- 170 mg, Calcium- 18 mg. No added sugar.
Real Activ: 48 cal; 12 gms Sugar, Vitamin C- 20 mg, Potassium- 86 mg, Calcium- 18 mg. No added sugar
Real: 56 cal; 13 gms Sugar, Vitamin C- 12.5 mg, Potassium- 70 mg, Calcium- 5 mg. Contains added sugar.
Minute Maid: 42 cal; 10.5 gm Sugar (no more info). Contains added sugar

Bottom line if it says 100% orange juice it should not have added sugar.

Operation South Coast: Germany's plans for the invasion of Britain revealed in rare Nazi book not seen for 70 years

With obscure technical diagrams and notes scrawled over its pages of faded colour maps, this book might appear as nothing more than an uninspiring aerial survey.

But these pictures are taken from Adolf Hitler's original war dossier of the planned Nazi invasion of Britain.

Unveiled for the first time 70 years to the day of Hitler's planned onslaught on England's south coast, the blueprints offer a chilling insight into what might have been on the morning of September 15, 1940.
The booklet pinpoints the quaint English coastal towns in the path of the Nazi ground assault, which could have been a grim reality had the RAF not performed so valiantly against the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain.

The invaders' guide book also eerily shows how postcards identifying unmistakable landmarks such as Brighton Pier and Land's End were given to Nazi troops to identify their targets in preparation for their blitz of the British Isles.

The original copy of the Nazis' briefing book Militargoegraphiscke Angaben uber England Sudkuste for 'Operation Sealion' detailed every attack point and weakness along England's south coast ahead of the Germans' assault in September 1940.

It is said to have been the most vital part of the painstakingly detailed German attack plan, and included large colour maps showing every part of the south coast, from Land's End in the south west to Foreness Point in Kent.

On September 17, 1940 Hitler was forced to indefinitely postpone Operation Sealion because of the Luftwaffe's failure to gain air supremacy over England in the fateful summer aerial engagement.

I hate Nazis.

I agree she isn't calling for mass bans on unhealthy food in those remarks, my point was merely that she was starting to expand past where actual government intervention might be needed (some cases of childhood obesity) and into areas where it is much less needed (menu suggestions for restaurants).

She's the First Lady and I realize has no direct authority to do anything policy wise - I'm not running out and buying a deep fryer to make sure I can keep on eating as if I intend to kill myself for fear of government intervention, just voicing my personal opinion that I hope it stays in the realm of speeches and suggestions and doesn't morph later into legislation, that's all.

(I'm not sure how many restaurant owners hadn't thought of offering healthy side-items before this speech, seems to be a national trend now that's been moving for a couple years - especially in the fast food area).

Ayatollah whips crowds into a violent frenzy

The speech appeared to be part of an effort by Iran’s hard-line leaders to amplify Muslim outrage over scattered gestures to burn or tear pages of the Koran, in the wake of the threat — later withdrawn — by Terry Jones, a Florida pastor, to burn the Koran on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

In Tehran, about 1,000 protesters chanting “Death to America” and “U.S. pastor must be killed” clashed with the police and threw stones at the Swiss Embassy, Reuters reported.

From Cuba....Communism = FAIL

Cuba to cut 500,000 gov't workers, reform salaries

HAVANA — The big economic changes Cuba's communist leaders have been promising for years appear finally to be happening in earnest — and they will be hard.

Cuba on Monday said it is laying off nearly half a million workers, an eye-popping figure in any country, but especially in a nation where the government so totally dominates the economy.

The shift would mean that one-tenth of the island's 5.1 million-strong work force will be looking for jobs in the private sector by April 2011, a drastic change that could mean a radically altered economic outlook, especially for Cubans in their 20s and 30s who have known nothing but a paternalistic communist system ushered in by Fidel Castro in his 1959 revolution.

re: #176 Cannadian Club Akbar

If you don't know basic nutrition you are an idiot.

Or, you're the product of the combination of undereducation about food additives and oversaturation of vague language in descriptions of food.

I completely buy in to the argument that we're all responsible for our food choices. I'm just unconvinced that real information about nutrition has been readily accessible until relatively recently. (Not talking about labeling requirements, although that's part of it.) There's been a great deal of slightly misplaced trust on the part of American food consumers -- "well, the FDA says it's OK, so that company CAN'T be putting out bad food", and there's no real understanding of the food production and distribution process. Further, I can't recall ever being taught anything in school regarding reading and decoding nutritional labeling phrases, and never was taught the importance of being proactive in your food choices so you can occasionally indulge without it killing you.

I find it hard to criticize people for not being knowledgeable when that knowledge is obscured by those with an interest in maximizing profit. (An example: high fructose corn syrup -- industry justification is that it's OK "in moderation" -- is a nutritionally useless, profit-maximizing alternative to using simple natural sugar. Fair enough, but take a look at how many products, from beverages to cereals to candy to baked snacks, use HFCS as a significant ingredient; for the average consumer, using HFCS "in moderation" is incredibly difficult because it's everywhere.)

The recent trend toward requiring restaurants to disclose nutritional info should be a revelation to people. Up until recently, it was impossible for a diner to know that that caesar chicken salad they order as a healthy option has 2000 calories and the fat/sodium equivalent of a pound of bacon.

I put this in the same category as financial education in one critical sense: schools do not teach kids to take bankers' and food producers' words with a large grain of salt. Until we start raising young folks who are critical consumers, change will be very slow.

Journalist surprised Fidel Castro retracted comments

A U.S. journalist who interviewed Fidel Castro said on Monday he was surprised the former Cuban leader claimed that some of his comments were misrepresented because Castro has made similar statements before.

A report by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic magazine raised eyebrows around the world last week when it quoted Castro as saying that ``the Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore.''

Castro later said his comments were misinterpreted and that what he had meant to say was that it was the capitalism model that no longer works.

Agreed. We have a really fucked up food culture and the FDA has been a large part of the problem by requiring high levels of preservatives and chemicals. I'm not sure the labeling requirements is going to help things much. The average American is unfamiliar with actual healthy food that they wouldn't recognize it if they saw it.

Right, the capitalistic model doesn't work, which is why Cuba is slowly moving towards a capitalistic system from the sclerotic government controlled economy in place since the Castro-led revolution in 1959.

Of course, Castro can't be faulted here - it's not like he's an economics genius by any stretch and his country has always relied on handouts from others - particularly the former Soviet Union to subsist as he nationalized industries and eliminated private ownership of property.

You were probably taught the food groups and the FDA-approved plan.

Were you taught to examine ingredients? Question them? Were you taught about additives like HFCS and their potential effects? Did you learn about the use of hydrogenation and how it changes the basic nature of how food reacts in your digestive and nervous systems? Did you learn about the extent to which livestock animals are exposed to excess levels of antibiotics and hormones, and how those issues affect development and human immune systems?

It's far more than just knowing what food groups are approved. I work in the industry and have to manage these details daily, and I'm telling you that whatever is getting taught is NOT getting through in a meaningful way -- or it hasn't been.

It's interesting to see how the Brits are dealing with food education. The celebrity chefs and cooking shows in the UK are often food education advocates posing as entertainment. I'm not sure how much of a cultural change they have made but there's a serious effort to teach people about food and cooking. American shows focus more on entertainment and unhealthy food like cakes and deserts.

The ceasar salad is good example. Actually any salad is a good example. A healthy eating option- eat more green stuff! So people eat more green stuff and assume that just cause it's 'green' leafy stuff it's better no matter what is also in the dish. Then you have lots of promotions of 'healthy' choices (salad) where the makeup of the salad isn't much better calorie or fat wise then regular and supposedly unhealthy choices. It's not that everyone is generally stupid, it's just lack of knowledge or focusing on just one aspect of the choice, like with salads....just the fact that it has leaves in it.

I love caesar salads and am always on a search for the best ones in my area. Not kidding myself though that it is the most healthy thing I could choose just because it's salad. :)

re: #220 Killgore Trout

Agreed. We have a really fucked up food culture and the FDA has been a large part of the problem by requiring high levels of preservatives and chemicals. I'm not sure the labeling requirements is going to help things much. The average American is unfamiliar with actual healthy food that they wouldn't recognize it if they saw it.

I'd also add a generalized perception that 'healthy' or 'healthier' is equal to sucky, not good food. Though I would say that this generalized perception is changing. I'm not really sure exactly how this sort of perception came about but it's something I see and meet with all over the place.

Nazi Graffiti Found in Dorms

Four students were victims of bias-related incidents in New South Hall on Sept. 6 and 11, and a similar incident occurred in Darnall Hall sometime between Sept. 11 and 13, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Swastika symbols were drawn and the name “Hitler” was written on dry-erase boards hanging on the doors to the victims’ rooms. A first-floor resident of New South, who wished to remain anonymous due to the nature of the incident, said he returned to his dorm room at night to find graffiti drawn on his dry-erase board. While the vandalism was not related to Nazism, he said he thought it was likely drawn by the same people who drew a swastika on one of his floormate’s doors. The defaced dry-erase boards were scattered throughout New South.

“The general belief is that this was done by a group of non-Georgetown students who were let into the dorm. It is positive that it was not done by Georgetown students, but it could give other people ideas,” he said.

DPS Investigative Sergeant David Ruiz said DPS could not comment on this supposition, but added that the case was under investigation and that the Metropolitan Police Department had been notified.

HFCS processes thru the human body much slower than real sugar.

People want cheap eats. People want quick eats. People want prepackaged eats. People may want to eat healthy, but those competing interests run into each other. Consider that fresh fruit and vegies are more expensive than many canned varieties and other food choices such that people on limited budgets are going to trade one for another.

Throw in government directives to eat certain foods or avoid certain foods (that later turn out to be not the best food options after all), and you've got mass confusion and a public that consumes far more than they should based on a sedentary lifestyle.

Top among all issues should be portion control. No matter what you're talking about - reducing the overall size of portions should be key.

That's a worthwhile characteristic to watch. If a natural-source ingredient (say, sugar, or vegetable oil) which our bodies are designed to process is chemically altered to NOT break down as quickly on the shelf, chances are it will do the same thing in our bodies.

Had lunch at a Mexican restaurant on Sunday that also had a brunch buffet (American items like fried chicken, bacon, scrambled eggs, etc). Their Mexican food is pretty good, which is what we had, but I could see the chafing dishes from my table, and I watched in horror as some guy (he was rather large) put nine pieces (I counted) of fried chicken on his plate, then used the same tongs to scoop about a dozen pieces of bacon on top of said mountain. As it wasn't stable, he had to pull three pieces of bacon off the top, fold them with his fingers, and slip them into his mouth as he explored the other items he wanted to fit on the plate.

It was pretty gross...and sad.

My personal story re: HFCS. Granted, everyone's metabolism is unique. I've always been slender-ish, never a weight problem, never more than a 32 waist size. I made a decision to eliminate every shred of HFCS that was in my regular diet (I was a 2-3 Cokes per day guy), replacing them with items I made, or items that simply used sugar. No other changes, no reductions in regular intake amounts, no changes in exercise. Within a month, I lost 15 pounds, and it's stayed constant since then. I can't say everyone would have the same response, but it's worth trying.

I wonder if Hillary will bring this up at the peace talks?

Hamas video imagines takeover of Israel

A Hamas video clip shows landmarks in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv being bombed and the imaginary takeover of Israel by Palestinians.

Two young Palestinian members of Hamas from Gaza and the West Bank created the video called the "Battle to Free Palestine," Ynetnews.com reported Monday.

The Web site said the clip has caused a frenzy on Arab Internet sites.

The clip opens with a Palestinian declaring "Inshallah [in God's name] the homeland will be returned [to us] through jihad [holy war]."

The scene then moves to a classroom where young Palestinians demand to participate in the "resistance."

Armed Hamas operatives are shown planning the operation.

Then, vivid images show landmarks in Jerusalem such as the Supreme Court and Bank of Israel buildings and popular sites in Tel Aviv being bombed and engulfed in flames.

The name of Tel Aviv is changed to Tel-Arabiya and Palestinian and Hamas flags are hoisted in the city. Palestinian vehicles drive on one of Tel Aviv's main highways.

The clip then shows Israeli soldiers killed in battle and Hamas operatives firing rockets.

You've hit on a lot of points here that make the issue so complex. I'd also add a general decline in people knowing how to cook even the most basic of things or cook in a cheap way, especially from fresher and less processed ingredients. I don't think there is any one factor that has led to this but I do think it is part of it. For people that do cook it can seem really weird, how can people not know? It's not rocket science or anything. I ran into this much more when I lived in the city and less so where I live now which is more rural.

That assumes that the persons caught were actually inside the declared border. The Iranians captured the three in an area where the border was not demarcated - and it is possible that the Iranians captured the three while they were not actually within Iran at the time. A similar situation happened with North Korea capturing Laura Ling and an associate along the North Korean/Chinese border (also an unmarked area).

I was fine, weight wise until I went to University and worked two jobs to put me through it. Combination of eating out more, not eating regularly and just generally eating more processed stuff because it was easy. I also went from an extremely physical athletic job and lifestyle to something more sedentary. Even though I knew a lot about food and choices the extent of the changes caught up (20+) pounds worth of catching up before I really clued into what had happened. Morning Lizards!

Saw this in the news; any idea whether this is a genuine apology or not?

Jim Greer's apology

Here's the gist of it:

"In the year since I issued a prepared statement regarding President Obama speaking to the nation's school children, I have learned a great deal about the party I so deeply loved and served," Greer said in a statement Tuesday to CNN and other media outlets.

"Unfortunately, I found that many within the GOP have racist views and I apologize to the President for my opposition to his speech last year and my efforts to placate the extremists who dominate our Party today. My children and I look forward to the President's speech."

However, Greer is now under indictment on fraud and money-laundering charges after being drummed out of the state party so revenge and/or fear could also be motivating factors in his "seeing of the light".

Thoughts, feelings?

And this is the core issue -- we rarely realize how our food choices change they way our bodies respond in general. Weight loss and dietary changes are certainly rooted in the brain, but dealing with the ways the body changes can be the most discouraging factor.

The Stink of Desperation: Why Republicans Lie
[Link: www.esquire.com...]

In the world I grew up in, this episode of "truthiness" would have ended Hannity's career. It's certainly far worse than the charges that sank Dan Rather just five years ago. And there are many, many more such examples, from "death panels" to the way so many Republican politicians have encouraged the absurd "birther" controversy.

I don't think there's any equivalent to this on the left. Liberals can be annoyingly self-righteous and swept away by hyperbole — calling George W. Bush a moron, for example — but I don't see much deliberate lying. Certainly nothing on the scale of Fox or Limbaugh.

I have two theories about this. One is that the conservative intelligentsia is deliberately training the Republican base to be irrational. I can almost see them chortling: "If we can get them to believe the earth is only 6,000 years old, we can get them to believe anything!"
But while this theory provides a little consolation, I don't actually think it's true. Far more likely is theory No. 2 — that Republicans have lost all confidence in their ability to convince the American people with honest arguments. Their triumphalism about November conceals a stink of desperation.

BTW, today's primary day around the country and there are 2 races in the NYC metro area to watch. Rangel will try to hold on to his seat (and I expect that he will). Lazio v. Paladino in the GOP undercard to the November massacre by Andy Cuomo for NYS governor.

While the NYT wants to say that there are more competitive races this year than most, I'm not seeing it. NYS AG is an open race, but the other statewide races are unopposed or have insignificant opposition. No one in NY can name the candidates for AG in a 5-way race. There is no real opposition in the primaries for US senate, and the local races are mostly uncompetitive except for an insurgent run against Carolyn Maloney and the big race between the corrupt Rangel and Adam Clayton Powell IV (son of a corrupt and disgraced Congressman who was himself ousted in 1970 by Rangel - poetic justice of a sort).

Highly recommended book:

In Defense of Food

A really great, very simple book, echoing much of what you've said.

Basically, eat real food. Not processed crap. Then you can actually get a picture on what you're putting into your body and its likely effects.

There's also a good chapter/section in _The Omnivore's Dilemma_ on a farm in Virginia where the primary product is the grass... Of course the farmer is also doing further processing on that grass into dairy, poultry, pork and other products.

The rest of the book is good too. ;)

If you wondered why we have been safe since 9-11, the American Family Association has the answer, it's major league baseball and other sporting events./

"Remarkably, we have established the practice of converting every major league stadium, every NFL stadium, and every NBA arena into a temporary cathedral in which hundreds of thousands of Americans every week pray to God and ask him to watch over this land.

I suggest that these prayers have been heard and they have been answered."

Fidel Castro says French President Nicolas Sarkozy is 'too crazy to be trusted with the launch codes of nuclear bombs'

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has said Nicolas Sarkozy is 'too crazy to be trusted with the launch codes of nuclear bombs' in a scathing attack on the French president.

The ex-communist dictator said a briefcase containing the codes for more than 300 atomic weapons never left Mr Sarkozy's side.

And 84-year-old Castro told Mexican daily La Journada: 'France is the world's third biggest nuclear power.

Heh. I think he's still jealous because the Soviets never let him have his own erector set of nukes.

I see we had another alumni of the class of 2004 melt down last night, in the 'mistake' thread.

That's one reason why I occasionally defend myself against the ankle biters' attacks -- it invariably brings out some lurkers with grudges.

re: #266 Jadespring

You've hit on a lot of points here that make the issue so complex. I'd also add a general decline in people knowing how to cook even the most basic of things or cook in a cheap way, especially from fresher and less processed ingredients. I don't think there is any one factor that has led to this but I do think it is part of it. For people that do cook it can seem really weird, how can people not know? It's not rocket science or anything. I ran into this much more when I lived in the city and less so where I live now which is more rural.

It's essentially family-level education at this point since I don't think high-school home economics ever really touched on it (and does that even *exist* anymore in our current education system?)

You learn to cook (if at all) from your parents unless you self-actualize at some later point to do your own. (Cue quip about ramen noodle consumption rates in college,)

I did spaghetti sauce out of a jar for years and years since that is what Mom did. At some point I started adding extras; more garlic, more herbs, additional spices, etc. But the base was still the stuff from a jar. A couple years back I started working through a few cook books and essentially from that point stopped using jarred sauce. I'd discovered that I could make something tasty and about as quick starting from a can of diced tomatoes (when no garden tomatoes available), or simply doing something simple based on garlic and olive oil. And if you're careful about reading up on your canned product contents and processing you then get a lot of control about what goes into the pot - especially if you have to keep an eye on the sugar and salt levels.

re: #290 deranged cat We see what we want to see. Liberals called George W. Bush worse than a moron and their record for honest and open political dialogue and electons is less than pure.

I am not pleased with the GOPs trend towards pandering to ignorance in the last several years (decades?) but I'm taking my own party to task in public forums adn at the ballot box.

Republican triumphalism has more to do with knowing midterm elections in a bad economic year are disasterous for incumbant parties than it does with desperation.

Veterans Agency Made Secret Deal Over Benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs failed to inform 6 million soldiers and their families of an agreement enabling Prudential Financial Inc. to withhold lump-sum payments of life insurance benefits for survivors of fallen service members, according to records made public through a Freedom of Information request.

...It also sounds a little like Dem pundits are trying to soften the impending loss of seats by claiming it is the ignorance of the R voter that is leading us to this political crisis.

The intelligencia on both sides of the political divide aren't as influencial and powerful as they dream they are. You could silence all of the pundits and reporters between now and November and I doubt it would have much influence on the mid-term elections which will end up being more of a referendum on how the public feels about the economy and their prospects.

Anti-incumbant is the zeitgeist not appeal to ignorance.

Politician got swastika carved into forehead

A 24-year-old candidate of the nationalist party the Sweden Democrats was yesterday attacked and cut with a knife in his home in Malmö, southern Sweden. Two offenders carved a swastika into his forehead. Earlier in the day someone had sprayed left-wing extremist political slogans on the house where the 24-year-old lives. The perpetrators are unknown at the moment but the police are looking for clues among those who on Friday tried to interrupt a political meeting held in Malmö by the Sweden Democrats.

Sweden Democrat blogger claims Africans have ‘rape gene’

In his blog entitled “Landskronabackspege”, meaning Landskrona rear view mirror, 76-year-old retiree Wahlberg wrote about what he sees as the “genetic characteristics” of black Africans.

“For many thousands of years, the Negro could chill out in the heat, eat some bananas, rape some passing woman or child, fight with other negro males and eat them up, play the drums a little, run around a bit, catch an antelope, eat a few bananas, f**k a bit, get drunk on fermented fruits or herbs, and so on. This has been going on for millennia without any evolutionary pressure in the form of environmental factors forcing the Negro to develop in another direction,” the blog read.
