Christine O’Donnell: Coed Dorms Will Lead to Orgy Rooms

Wingnuts • Views: 5,480

At Salon, Justin Elliott found a 2003 article by anti-wanking creationist Christine O’Donnell in which she warned America’s youth about the lurking threat of coed dorm rooms, leading inevitably, inexorably, to orgy rooms and menage a trois rooms (with any luck): O’Donnell warned of ‘orgy rooms’ in college dorms.

Dorm life has evolved into a blending of the sexes, from coed buildings to coed floors, coed bathrooms and now even coed rooms.

“What’s next? Orgy rooms? Menage a trois rooms?” asked Christine O’Donnell, spokeswoman for the Intercollegiate Studies Institute in Wilmington, Del., which publishes a college guide.

All this coedness is outside normal life, said Miss O’Donnell. “Most average American adults don’t use coed bathrooms - if they had the option of a coed bathroom at a public restaurant, they wouldn’t choose it.” Coedness “is like a radical agenda forced on college students,” she said.

Man, the Tea Partiers really picked a winner here! In 1997, O’Donnell also complained that the government was spending too much money fighting AIDS, that condoms did nothing to prevent it, and that the money would be better spent on teaching people how not to be gay.

OMG, that is so very very stupid!

Whereas I used to have to leave my dorm and walk halfway across campus to go to the student union to socialize, play a game of cards, watch a movie, meet people, etc. - my daughter (who lives in a coed dorm) can do all of that in the very nice lounge area on her floor, which has tables, comfortable seating, a big-screen TV with cable and a DVD player, and a SEPARATE large study area for those needing quiet to study - can get her socializing done in a safe place, and isn't walking the campus at all hours of the night.

Geez. People are not thinking things through . . . .

I attended University of Arizona when they had all-female dorm rooms. No males allowed between 10pm and 8am. There was one men's bathroom in the lobby.

Which, for all practical purposes, meant that guys were not allowed to be seen in the halls after curfiew. There was always a line in front of the men's bathroom just before to pm.

Once, when visiting my girlfriend there, I had to pee late at night, so I just let fly out the window, and hit a couple that was couplating in the bushes...

Yeah, next thing you know lowering the drinking age to 18 will lead to kegs in the common room.

Ah, the 70's, the kids really missed out. I'll never forget when I met my first YAF member on campus at RIT. It's been cultural downhill ride ever since. Pull out your weanies, spin those beans, life really is a cupcake with frosting.

26 Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All  Wed, Sep 15, 2010 1:23:47pm

If there is a silver lining to the tripe they're going to find on O'Donnell, is that the Democrats will be much more likely to be motivated to go to the polls, particularly if the meme that, "sure, we're not perfect, and yeah, the Firedoggers all think that Obama sold them out and is as bad as Bush, but damn... do you really want people like this in control of Government?"

Paint the Republican as broadly as possible, (a point which the Republicans are enabling by the full throated, if belated support they're now throwing behind O'Donnell) and keep hammering away at this, not to suppress Republican votes, but to remind the Democrats that really, things could get much worse if you sit at home on election day.

Expect an uptick in Democrat Enthusiasm and a slight downtick in Republican enthusiasm.

It's still almost 2 months til election day, so there's a lot of time to pull America back from a potential nightmare.

It's just a pity that the war for the conservative soul has been won by the extremists, because America needs a blend of healthy conservatism and debate, neither of which we're going to get from the current incarnation of the Republican Party.

re: #13 darthstar

I wish they had orgy rooms when I was in college.

That's the craziest thing.

I think coed dorms are the best thing next to sliced bread, seriously.

The kids who are having sex, are going to have sex, just like they always did.
The kids who aren't, aren't, just like they always did.

For generally being able to stay in a safe place and meet people and socialize, coed dorms are wonderful, IMO.

I was thinking yesterday of the differences between today's dorm life and what I experienced, and the coed dorm was one of the positives. (Along with text messages that tell you when a washing machine has been freed up, and another to tell you when your own laundry is finished).

I never lived in the dorms...apartments and houses...I probably would have enjoyed dorm life (and been a better student my first few years in college).

In addition to coed, the dorms are organized by field of study - everybody in her dorm is in the same college (agriculture) as daughter is, so they're all taking similar courses, have classes together, can study together, etc. Current dorm life is a world different from when I was in college - better, much much better.

This from a woman who thinks that a husband you rather use his had for pleasure then have sex with a willing wife.
Someone who has never had sex (I mean she's all for purity and she has never been married) really has no business telling others not to wank or used co-ed dorms.

(but really we keep talking about this stuff, but the more important thing about the candidate is that she is a liar. She tired to smear Mike Castle as gay (not that there is anything wrong with being gay) and her fiscal issues.)

Who is tea party sensation Christine O’Donnell?:

As she explained to the Wilmington News Journal in 2004, she did "things she regrets" in college, such as drinking to excess and becoming somewhat sexually promiscuous. Those regrets spurred her to promote chaste values, and to seek out a national forum to advance related policy aims such as abstinence education.

So there, haters - she knows first-hand of what she speaks :P

In fairness to O'Donnell, (and it pains me to say that) I believe she means actual co-ed rooms in a dorm, not just co-ed dorms which have been around for decades and are safer and more civilized than single sex ones. I believe there are a few dorms here and there which have no restrictions on the sex of the room mate, but they may be in suites with private sleeping quarters around a common room. I would think that would obviate the need for the orgy rooms, but what do I know.

Five Steps to Becoming a Secondary Virgin

* Make a firm commitment to save yourself for marriage from now on, and believe you can do it. (Because you can!)

* Get away from people, places, things and situations that weaken your self-control. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is avoid people who tempt us.

* Avoid intense hugging, passionate kissing and anything else that leads to lustful thoughts and behavior. Anything beyond a brief, simple kiss can quickly become dangerous.

* Find non-physical ways to show your love and appreciation.

* Remember that anyone can start over. Including you! When you focus on commitment and self-discipline, you can control your impulses.

Purity Ring = "Sure, I'll date you, but no playing around..wait, where are you going?"

Purity Ring = Blowjobs or anal sex, since the kids who wear them tend to think of virginity in terms of vaginal intercourse only.

Did she get her virginity surgically reinstated?

That is horrific. If there was anything that was bad about losing virginity it was the physical pain it caused the woman. Who would even think to do this with a sane mind!?!

Seriously- I've been very open with my kids about my past, why I became chaste once I joined the Mormons, the challenges of doing so, the joys of reproduction and intimacy for non-reproductive reasons, good reasons to wait, the challenges of waiting, etc.

Acting like people don't have drives and desires or that its easy to control them until marriage (a wise idea but not an easy ideal) just makes kids think adults are clueless. Plus if they fail while thinking the adults around them are perfect it leads to secrecy and guilt.

Repression does not equal chastity. Open discussion of reality and caution leads to chastity.

Grrrrr... these lunatics are going to destroy the families they claim to defend!

Oh, for the love of...

...I went to a Catholic University, where the Freshmen dorms were completely single-sex, and had a strict "out by midnight" policy. You could get fined if you were caught.

Then the upperclass dorms were divided by "wings" of 8 rooms, non-coed. A girls' wing could be right across from a boys' wing. However, the sign in/out policy still applied between upperclass buildings.

Lesson learned: It's fine to sleep with whomever you want, as long as they're in the same building as you.

Whatta waste of time.

It must have something to do with the fact that a lot of early church fathers (St Paul, St Anthony) were very sexually conflicted and this tradition continues to echo throughout Christianity.

But we have made some progress, at least we don't force our women to veil themselves comletely to keep from driving men to have lustful thoughts.

Only the judgemental ones. ;-)

I've known a few young ladies who freaked out upon smelling their first cigarette smoke accross the pool deck but they are as a rule not the most mature among us.

Mormons are not monolithic. My reading of our doctrines tells me the standards are for me to live, for me to teach and for me to be an example of so my life and those around me are blessed.

Doctrinal standards are not for me to impose on others.

(Which is why I still remain perplexed about the overt political actions in California.)

re: #161 JasonA

You totally just gave me the idea for a religious movement that goes door-to-door looking for converts and brings six packs with them.

Actually, we have a "sorta rule" in our house. Tell the missionaries we're quite happy with our own faith, but if they'd like to come in and have a cold lemonade and tell us about where they're from, we'd love to hear it. I'm having a hard time remember when we haven't had that offer accepted. Almost always get an interesting story out of it.

The U.S. has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the world. One-third of our young women under 20 get pregnant. Most of them are NOT in college - Bristol Palin - but they're having sex. [Link: www.livestrong.com...]

O'Donnell is obsessed with sex, yet she wears her sexuality on her sleeve. I mean look at her. With her pretty brown, flowing hair, her ruby red lips (she's never without that dark lipstick), heavy eye makeup. What's her problem?

I really hate to say such things because mostly I find them misogynistic, but I really don't think she's getting regular "Hey Hey!".

ROFL!

So do Mormons look down on people who indulge in caffeine?

BTW - Cafiene is not technically verbotten. Several people I know drink coke. The Word of Wisdom (dietary section of our doctrines) is interpreted as no coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco (this is also interpreted to include harder substances that came into popular use after the mid 1800s). It also includes do's to go with the don'ts. Do eat grain and meat sparingly, do eat healthy foods and keep your body clean, etc.

re: #99 DaddyG

Grrr... these lunatics are going to destroy the families they claim to defend!

But a lot of the religions *want* you feeling repressed and guilty.

Now that ODonnell has won her primary race, expect to see lots more of stories like this to find their way to the front page:

Checkered Financial Past Dogs Tea Party's Christine O'Donnell in Senate Bid

O'Donnell raised eyebrows with one of her first acts as a new candidate, when she officially disclosed her finances. In a Senate financial disclosure report from July, O'Donnell reported just $5,800 in earned income between March 2009 and July 2010. She says she worked for two companies, one a marketing firm and the other a conservative political action committee.

According to Federal Election Commission data, O'Donnell contributed $3,026 of her own money, or more than half her reported "earned income" to her campaign.

In interviews, O'Donnell has said she earned more than that $5,800 but was not required to disclose it. "The only thing they can use against me is that I'm not a multimillionaire," she told the Weekly Standard before the election.

Opposite Attraction; Pitching Abstinence to the Young and the Restless at the HFStival
By Christine O'Donnell
15 June 1997
The Washington Post

Walking through the crowd I also noticed more pentagrams than crosses around the teenage necks. "Satanism is the religion of the '90s," I was told. "It means I worship nature," responded one girl when I asked her what the pentagram meant to her. I explained that the pentagram is to Satan what the cross is to Christ. She didn't want to believe it.

Others knew exactly what it meant.

"I'd rather go to hell and do what I want than go to heaven and do what others say," said a pale boy wearing smeared red and black eyeliner who had deep scars along the insides of both arms.

This boy mirrored "The Satanic Bible's" basic philosophy, "Do what thou wilt." Satanism has re-emerged among Generation X with an arrogance that mocks its members as it blatantly destroys them. Was this boy so consumed with his right to worship Satan that he couldn't see Satan's true purpose, which is to devour and destroy his worshipers? Past generations have broadened the boundaries so much that this generation must go to great extremes to rebel.

The generation of young people that questioned the establishment in the '60s is now middle-aged, and has become the establishment itself. Moral absolutes have been eliminated, "feel-good" religions created, and free sex legitimized, paving the way for disposable marriages. The results of these tailor-made values are new strains of sexually transmitted diseases, more potent drugs, more broken families and out-of-wedlock pregnancy rates and worrisome suicide rates. It's time for this generation of young people to question the new establishment.

224 simoom  Wed, Sep 15, 2010 2:10:58pm

I posted about this when I watched the clip last night, but in '98 on 'Politically Incorrect', O'Donnell also connected gun violence with lack of the bible and prayer in school & AIDS with the 60's sexual revolution (the way I interpreted what she was saying is that she was describing national divine retribution for sin). This was following a discussion on the Lewinsky scandal:

O'Donnell: In the 60's we took the bible out of schools...

O'Donnell: My point is, if we as a nation accept that kind of morality we're going to fall.

Maher: What do you mean? ...

O'Donnell: My point is, there are consequences to our actions, and if we as a nation tolerate sin, generations to come will reap the effects of that. For example, we took the Bible and prayer out of public schools now we're having weekly shootings practically. ... We had the 60's sexual revolution, you know, where there was just a sexual free-for-all. Today people are dying of AIDS.

I cut out a bunch of crosstalk in the transcription, but that last quoted paragraph starts ~6:55 in this clip:

AMERICA'S SEXUAL RIGHT TURN
INSIGHT
2 June 1997

"In general, my generation is confused," says Christine O'Donnell, 27, head of the Saviors Alliance for Lifting the Truth, a Christian youth group that advocates sexual abstinence. "We're craving more conservative values, more boundaries." O'Donnell lectures at high schools about abstinence and says there always is a sigh of relief when teens hear that it's okay to wait. "A lot of these kids have never had anyone tell them no, and they want that," she explains.

Despite O'Donnell's modest success - she has been featured on MTV and will fence comedian Al Franken on an upcoming episode of Politically Incorrect - her mission, she says, is a struggle against the still-dominant liberal culture. "People are always talking about how bad the seventies were, but things in the popular culture have gotten much worse even since then. I grew up watching Laverne and Shirley, and Lenny and Squiggy never slept over. Now with shows like Friends or Married i With Children, sex is everywhere. I mean, can you imagine the minds that were raised on those shows?"

Actually I also need to issue a correction.

The various religious philosophies do not want you being repressed and guilty.

A large chunk of the hierarchies that have established themselves based on those philosophies want you to feel repressed and guilty since that is a large basis of what empowers them and gives them control over people.

In Wilmington, Republican strategist Don Mell and his wife, Jeanne, who is a Democrat, walked across the street from Castle's party to Coons' primary watch party at a nearby pub. The couple donned Castle pins when they arrived at the Coons event and picked up one of the Democrat's yard signs.

"I'm not voting for that woman-she's crazy," Don Mell said. "There isn't going to be any discussion about that."

It's a good soapbox.

Parents really overestimate the direct effect they can have on their kids behavior. As you say, they can mainly just control that visible behavior around them.

Setting examples for kids and treating them with real respect, and not insulting their intelligence by thinking they can't get away with stuff behind your back if they want to-- that's key.

I just don't trust anyone who ostentatiously denies having even harmless vices.

If they are verbally proclaiming their innocence there is a pretty good chance they struggle with that vice and are trying to prove it to themselves. As I gained mastery over some of my weaknesses over time I talked about them less and less.

There is still a laundry list I struggle with - but let's not talk about that. ;-)

Conservatives Trash Karl Rove After He Insists O'Donnell Says 'Nutty Things'

With the battle won by the ultra-right in Delaware, the national conservative pundits who backed Christine O'Donnell in last night's GOP Senate primary have turned on a man who is presumably one of their own: Karl "The Architect" Rove. After Rove bemoaned O'Donnell's nomination as the end of the GOP's chances to take back the Senate in a heated interview with Sean Hannity last night, pundits and tea partiers have slammed him as a traitor and even called for Fox News to suspend him as an on-air analyst.

I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but I just wanted to say... fuck you, Turdblossom. This is a monster you helped create. Sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up.

"It is not enough to be abstinent with other people, you also have to be be abstinent alone. The Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery, so you can't masturbate without lust."

"We took the Bible and prayer out of public schools. Now we're having weekly shootings. We had the 60s sexual revolution, and now people are dying of AIDS."

"You know, these are the kind of cheap, underhanded, un-manly tactics that we've come to expect from Obama's favorite Republican, Mike Castle [..] Mike, this is not a bake-off, get your man-pants on."

"God may choose to heal someone from cancer, yet that person still has a great deal of medical bills. The outstanding bills do not determine whether or not the patient has been healed by God."

"A candidate said several years ago, 'I'm not concerned the reason you vote for me as long as you vote for me.'"

"America is now a socialist economy. The definition of a socialist economy is when 50% or more your economy is dependent on the federal government."

Edwin Newman, TV Journalist, Dies at 91

Edwin Newman, the genteelly rumpled, genially grumpy NBC newsman who was equally famous as a stalwart defender of the honor of English, has died in Oxford, England. He was 91.

He died of pneumonia on Aug. 13, but the announcement was delayed until Wednesday so that the family could spend time grieving privately, his lawyer, Rupert Mead, said. He said that Mr. Newman and his wife had moved to England in 2007 to live closer to their daughter.

Mr. Newman, recognizable for his balding head and fierce dark eyebrows, was known to three decades of postwar television viewers for his erudition, droll wit and seemingly limitless penchant for puns. (There was, for example, the one about the man who blotted his wet shoes with newspapers, explaining, “These are The Times that dry men’s soles.”) He began his association with NBC in the early 1950s and was variously a correspondent, anchorman and critic there before retiring in 1984...

I well remember a conference I attended years back in which the bathrooms, showers and all, were coed. Man, what a time we had, the showers busy with folks getting all lathered up, the air steamy, hoo boy hotties everywhere!

Or maybe we just went about our business, kept our eyes and our hands to ourselves, and figured that the other floor's facilities had gone on the fritz and we needed to make do.

That said, there's a tension there that's absent when the facilities are segregated by sex. One needn't be so vigilant about just when and where what goes on and off and just how the towel is arranged.
