Michele Bachmann: Thomas Jefferson Wanted to Keep Abortion Illegal

Weird • Views: 4,210

At the fundamentalist paranoiafest called the Values Voter Summit, sponsored by the extreme right wing Family Research Council, Michele Bachmann gave a speech in which she said Thomas Jefferson intended to keep abortion illegal forever: Values Voter Summit Kicks Off With Attacks On Gays, Abortion Rights.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), as bright a star as ever shown in the conservative constellation this year, took to the stage to slam spending and “Obamacare,” but also took time to lead the attendees through a reading of the Declaration of Independence, which she suggested highlighted Thomas Jefferson’s intention to keep abortion illegal forever.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) — introduced to the audience as “the man who stopped global warming” (but not, you know, in the good way) — spoke at length about all the “problems that will happen” if “you let open gay activity in the military.” He called on attendees to jam Senate switchboards to shutdown the Defense Appropriations bill vote this week. He’s mad as hell about the end of DADT, and from the applause it seems like the crowd was mostly with him.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) the man who’d love to get the attention Bachmann gets from these folks and is doing his best to make that happen, warned the crowd about government support for Planned Parenthood.

“To the people who say they want to cut spending,” he exclaimed, “I say, OK — let’s start with federal funding for abortions here at home.”

Coming up later today: Rick Santorum and Christine O’Donnell, for a double dose of theocratic craziness.

Does it say how she came to that conclusion or does hearing/seeing knowing such "logic" reduce one to a mindless gibbering wreck?

Is there anyone who might be a GOP presidential candidate in 2012 who isn't attending this feast of theocratic lies?

Abortion was largely legal in the colonial period. It was unregulated too.

Infanticide existed and was a problem. But abortion simply wasn't an issue that people expected the state to weigh in on.

As Barry Goldwater once pointed out, there have been gay soldiers bravely shedding blood since before the Roman Empire.

I have good information that the abortion clinics in those days used dowsing rods since hangers were not invented yet.

Didn't the Greeks/Spartans do it back before then?

IIRC the actual methods had to do with ingesting toxins that would cause miscarriage.

You beat me to it-the Spartans had probably the world's most formalized system of pederasty in the troops and I don't recall anyone complaining that their soldiers weren't perfectly competent.

Spartans yes. The other Greeks were more loosely organized - not really the professional/expeditionary army that the Spartans were more akin to.

The "Values Voters" title is really obnoxious, cheesy propaganda.
As if those not in the club are devoid of values, or neglect to vote on them.

In all seriousness I doubt there were many abortions in those days and the Founding Fathers probably did not spend a lot of time on the subject. Of course I'm not as studied as Bachmann so take that with a dump truck full of salt.

Early Christians were notoriously sexually conflicted, just look at At. Anthony, castrating himself over his lustful longings for his younger sister.

So it is not too surprising to find these hangups reverberating throughout modern Christian theology.

More likely that purposeful miscarriages were more common than one thought. Woman would simply have to talk to the local midwife or herbalist and pick up the proper items and/or instruction. And all that being below the notice of the man of the house since it was woman stuff.

I've gotten the impression that there was a lot of realism going on when day-to-day living provided immediate challenges regarding food, shelter, what the next season would bring. Not much of a social safety net in those days - thus the great importance placed on extended family and social circles. The government wasn't going to step in, if anything they'd be the instrument showing up to toss you in debtor's prison or seizing your last livestock for some reason.

re: #12 karmic_inquisitor

Any quick look at an old herbal will find several herbs that are used to "bring on the menses" a.k.a. is an abortifacient. Naturally some were pretty toxic, and there are no reliable stats on whether they worked.

Jeez. . .they just can't resist rolling out the soc-con crap, can they?

Where's the concentration on the issues concerning most Americans; the economy and jobs?

Nope, not as important as the soc-con crap apparently. Throw out a few slams at spending etc. etc., then instead of offering an alternative idea, start in on the soc-con stuff. I am in SUCH a bad mood today.

I'm curious to know what Bachmann can divine about Jefferson's thoughts on antibiotics and the smallpox vaccine, or on net neutrality.

41 HappyWarrior  Fri, Sep 17, 2010 12:23:10pm

Reminds me of when George Allen claimed that Jefferson would have supported a consitutional ban on gay marriage too. And Michelle, just stop with the you're for limited government charade. You're for big government too in a worse way in those you oppose.
