Live Video: Fundamentalist Fearfest

Wingnuts • Views: 4,007

As Rick “Spreading” Santorum takes the stage, here’s a live video feed from the extreme right wing Family Research Council’s “Values Voter Summit.” He’s about to describe the evils perpetrated on America by John F. Kennedy — primary among them, the separation of church and state.

A note of background information: in 2001, Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins gave a speech to the openly white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens. And when Perkins worked for Senator Woody Jenkins, he purchased a phone-bank list from former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke.

And major GOP politicians speak at his events.

Rick Santorum just said separation of church and state is not an American value, and that America not only should, but MUST legislate morality.

re: #1 Charles

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their "legislature" should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between church and State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

-- Thomas Jefferson.

But what would he know about American values?

Yes, let's legistate morally starting with the Catholics (such as Mr. Santorum); they shouldn't be allowed to hold higher office. I mean, aren't they all working for the Pope?

All I need to know about Rick Santorum, I learned from Dan Savage.

16 Gus  Fri, Sep 17, 2010 11:21:41am

Rick Santorum fails to understand the underpinnings of the Age of Enlightenment and other movements that motivated America's founding fathers. It was largely based on reason, secularism, and science not on a revisionist view that he presents. And example of this can be seen in Jean-Jacques Rousseau who motivated the French and American Revolutions.

Rousseau advocated the opinion that, insofar as they lead people to virtue, all religions are equally worthy, and that people should therefore conform to the religion in which they have been brought up. This religious indifferentism caused Rousseau and his books to be banned from France and Geneva. He was condemned from the pulpit by the Archbishop of Paris, his books were burned, and warrants were issued for his arrest.

Santorum on the right to privacy:

AP: I'm sorry, I didn't think I was going to talk about "man on dog" with a United States senator, it's sort of freaking me out.

SANTORUM: And that's sort of where we are in today's world, unfortunately. The idea is that the state doesn't have rights to limit individuals' wants and passions. I disagree with that. I think we absolutely have rights because there are consequences to letting people live out whatever wants or passions they desire. And we're seeing it in our society.

AP: Sorry, I just never expected to talk about that when I came over here to interview you. Would a President Santorum eliminate a right to privacy — you don't agree with it?

SANTORUM: I've been very clear about that. The right to privacy is a right that was created in a law that set forth a (ban on) rights to limit individual passions. And I don't agree with that. So I would make the argument that with President, or Senator or Congressman or whoever Santorum, I would put it back to where it is, the democratic process. If New York doesn't want sodomy laws, if the people of New York want abortion, fine. I mean, I wouldn't agree with it, but that's their right. But I don't agree with the Supreme Court coming in.[Link: www.foxnews.com...]

Santorum's a ignorant, self-righteous tool. His pathetic attempt to talk about Lord of the Rings is proof enough of that:

“As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else. It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S. “You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States.”

Colbert's takedown of that was hilarious.

From the same conference comes this quote from Demint:

"I hear regularly as I travel around this country, someone will tell me, 'I'm a fiscal conservative conservative, but not a social conservative.' I want to straighten him a little bit this morning, because the fact is, you cannot be a real fiscal conservative if you do not understand the value of a culture that's based on values," ......
"When you have a big government, you're going to have a little God," said DeMint. "You're going to have fewer values and morals, and you're going to have a culture that has to be controlled by the government. But when you have a big God, you're going to have a responsible and capable people with character to control themselves and lead their own lives. And you can't have a little God that promotes freedom and allows people to keep more of their own money, and a government that's not bankrupt. A government that's not bankrupt. We're talking about fiscal issues."

Apparently Demint is not much of a student of history since individual liberty really only flourished after the separation of church and state, and Theocracies around the world and in history have really been far more intrusive in people's lives and fostered far more dependence.

As usual the Obama derangement comes into play. The reality is that Obama did not sign an Executive Order banning DADT. He asked the DoD and congress to study the matter first and come up with a new policy with the intent to reverse DADT. Furthermore, there are many gay military activists that are unhappy that Obama took this route instead of executing an outright ban.

Last I checked, one had to be an adult to join the military.
And parents can't force their adult children to do (or not do) anything.

Or is he suggesting parents should keep control of their kids until the kids are 30?

Eddie Izzard on transvestites in the military

Yeah. So! I didn't join the army, as you might have noticed... Yeah, ‘cause there's not much makeup in the army, is there? No? They only have that night-time look, and that's a bit slapdash, isn't it? And they look a mess! So you can't join, even though the American armed forces have a distinct policy of "don't ask, don't tell" towards the alternative sexualities. If you're a bloke wearing a lot of makeup, you know… I don't think they need to ask, really! And so you can't join, they go, "No, no, you can't.It's the wrong shade of lipstick for the Army, I'm afraid..." And they're missing a huge opportunity here, ‘cause we all know one of the main elements of attack is the element of surprise, and so what could be more surprising than the 1st Battalion Transvestite Brigade? Airborne wing! The airborne wing parachuting into dangerous areas with fantastic makeup! And a fantastic gun! And the opposing forces going, "Fucking ‘ell, look at these guys! Look at that! They’ve got guns. They've got guns! Jesus, they've got guns!" Ah, bugger. I was so surprised! Were you surprised? I was surprised.

Gil Mertz - FRC
Regional Director of Development

In February 2004, Gil Mertz joined Family Research Council (FRC) as a Regional Director of Development, articulating how FRC is working to restore the principles of faith, family and freedom in America to key supporters throughout the Western portion of the United States.

Gil has been involved with full-time Christian service for more than 30 years. He draws from a vast background of ministry with international missions, evangelism, humanitarian causes, social justice, race relations, and serving the homeless. He is a former pastor and also hosted his own call-in radio talk show in Colorado Springs. In addition to his duties as Master of Ceremonies for all FRC events, Gil also meets with community leaders, philanthropists, and churches that may not be familiar with FRC but are committed to conservative values.

Using FRC's resource materials, he urges citizens to become better educated and equipped to promote pro-family values in their own communities and around the country. Gil and his wife have three grown children, two grandchildren, and make their home in Southern California.

The Talibanization of America

In Pakistan, "Talibanization" is a label used to describe regressive and parochial conservatism, not just the political ascendancy of Mullah Omar and his extremist disciples. When we use the label "mullah," it is not the same thing as honoring someone by calling him "Father" or "Reverend." Instead, we're most likely referring to a person's narrow-mindedness, bigotry, and possible racism. So when we try to explain to fellow Pakistanis how the United States is much grander than the pettiness of Quran-burning circuses or mosque-defying extremists, we don't use the same labels that Americans would. Describing the ideological kith and kin of opponents of the Park51 project -- including the fringe element of folks like Terry Jones and his flock at the Dove World Outreach Center -- with terms like the moral majority, far-right evangelicals, or even neocons is useless.

Instead, when we try to explain what is happening in America, we simply say that a great country is going through a kind of Talibanization -- led by mullahs like Newt Gingrich, Pamela Geller, and the occasional Terry Jones.

By the way does anyone find it funny that these so called value voters are probably the ones most concerned about "Sharia" law yet they want to implement their own religious values on the country. If Sharia law ever coems in this country, it will be through the actions of people like Santorum rather than Obama in that Santorum does not respect that religion and the state should be seperate. I flat out don't get these people's enthaisum for having religion and the state together honestly. It leads to religious persecution. Shit, I have little doubt that religious persecution is part of why many of my ancestors came to this country. These people want an America where you're judged by your religion or lack of religion first and your character second.

Mark Bingham

Mark Kendall Bingham, born May 22, 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona, was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania. Mark, an openly gay man, assisted in defending the aircraft against the attackers and is considered one of the many heroes of that day. San Francisco has officially designated September 16 Mark Bingham Day.

But of course, having people like him serving in the military would be contrary to the nation's values.

They already make Reagan look like a liberal. Hell, Nixon's a bleeding heart pinko hippie and Goldwater's a RINO by their standards.

These people are insane.

This group now makes all of the following look like Commie Pinkos:

Reagan.
Goldwater.
Nixon.
Bush (either one).
WF Buckley.

I could go on, but the fact is that this group is lurching further to the right with each passing day thinking that this will gain them control of Congress.

They might yet take the House and even the Senate. Then, they'd have to govern. Will they be up to it and put their message to the test. I doubt it; they'll probably do like the Democrats before them and continue along the same track.

It's real easy to vilify the government when you're not a part of it, but when you're in the government, there isn't much left to vilify - which means that they'll be at loggerheads with the President and stalemate his agenda (which again explains why the Democrats were hoping to get as much of their agenda through in 2009 and 2010 because they knew that their window of opportunity could close thereafter).

I just figure that we'll see some moderation from the GOP if they regain the majority in the House and Senate (because they would have to deliver on stuff, rather than just block until 2012). If they retake only the House, they'll just block and keep to the crazy, because they will continue to think that this is what will get them reelected.

269 Charles Johnson  Fri, Sep 17, 2010 12:54:54pm

Ergun Caner:

Caner has said that he was born in Sweden and raised as a devout Sunni Muslim in Turkey before converting to Christianity, after he moved to Ohio in 1968. In a November 2001 sermon at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, he said that "Until I was 15 years old, I was in the Islamic youth jihad." In the same sermon, he said that "I was trained to do that which was done on 11 September, as were thousands of youth."[3] He also co-wrote a book with his younger brother Unveiling Islam: An Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs which said that his parents wed in Sweden and the family moved to Ohio when Caner was young. The divorce records of Caner's parents show that his family moved to Ohio when he was 3 or 4, contradicting Caner's claim of living as a teenager in Turkey.[4] Caner has co-authored several books with his brother Emir, president of Truett-McConnell College, a Baptist school in Cleveland, Georgia.

After bloggers began to post about discrepancies in his statements, in April 2010, Caner and others removed audio and video recordings of him on the internet that were being cited to support the claims against him,[5] and made changes to his personal website. [6] In one particular video, Caner appears not to be familiar with the basic testimonies of faith that anyone raised Muslim would know.

Consider:

The Clean Air Act of 2005! Who could be opposed to clean air? Except this is the bill with the Halliburton loopholes that allowed for unregulated fracking, massive increases in toxic chemicals in drinking water (by Federal standards) including a 100X increase in "accepted saftey" of things like arsenic, cyanide, strontium compounds and all sorts of truly toxic industrial chemicals with acronym names.

Values voters! Who could be opposed to voting on values? Except that these values include, misogyny, homophobia, race baiting, white supremacy, anti-science, anti-intellectualism, and the tearing down of protected liberties like separation of church and state.

The Heritage Foundation! This "think tank" is the home of pro oil, pro tobacco, anti- AGW, anti- evolution propaganda. They also are opposed to the federal government telling honest business men that they can not use foreign slave and child labor.

The Abramoff trail also leads to the Marianas, a US territory in the Pacific that Congress exempted from the U.S. minimum wage and immigration laws. The islands are home to Chinese-owned factories, where low-wage workers were imported from China and the Philippines and forced into slave labor conditions, living in squalid shacks behind barbed wire, to produce "Made in the USA" goods. As pressure built in the mid-1990s for a bill to impose U.S. laws on the islands, Abramoff was pitching his client-the government of the Marianas-as a regulation-free paradise and taking lawmakers, including Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), there on luxury junkets. "Capitol Crimes" lays out how Abramoff's influence with DeLay kept reform legislation from ever being debated on the floor of the House. Former Senator Frank Murkowski (R-AK), who sponsored legislation after seeing the appalling working conditions in the Marianas first hand, asks: "How could we have, in the United States, working conditions like this under the U.S. flag?"

See, it's okay to claim persecution because you're Christian and White but if you're a minority and God forbid a Muslim, you're a leftist ideologue playing the race card. Utterly amazes me the way these people think.

Gary Bauer (one of today's keynote speakers) stated equivocally that American liberals and Islamic fundamentalists were brothers-in-arms.

[Link: www.rightwingwatch.org...]

Progressives and Islamists are indeed on the same side. Their common disdain for Christianity explains why left-wing judges in America find any inkling of Christianity in the public square unconstitutional, while Islamist judges in the Middle East deem it executable.

Their common view that life is expendable explains the left’s embrace abortion-on-demand and why the Islamists don’t hesitate to deploy their own children for homicide bombings.

Their common totalitarian impulse explains why each group has as its governing objective to render its subjects entirely dependent on the state for everything in their lives, from education to healthcare.

Never mind the fact that liberals oppose pretty much everything that said fundamentalists stand for....

Thank goodness. Puritanism is what made the Jose Antonio's fascist movement remain in obscurity.

Or that an Islamist nutjob isn't going to give a shit what an American liberal thinks about anything.

Another Civil War, I am increasingly afraid. I really think they mean it when they talk about civil insurrection while taking assault rifles to political rallies.

We cracked on liberals for writing another 'strongly worded letter' and mocked them for wanting to move to another country if Bush was elected.

The problem is conservatives don't want to leave the country if it isn't going in the direction, they want to make everyone who disagrees with them leave. Or worse yet, if 'teh liberals' are elected, break the country up. by force if necessary.

I don't agree with either way really, but I'll take the Liberal's response over the conservative response any day.

I'm not surprised at all that he's spreading this lie. Seriously it amuses me that people like Bauer compare people like me to the Islamic fundamentalists yet decry our secular lifestyles. And it's funny that he compares the suicide bombings to abortion becuase Muslims fundamentalists aren't exactly the biggest supporters of abortion.

Unequivocally.

I do think the founders wanted separation of church and state not only for the good of the state, but also for the good of the church.

One's faith is between that person and their God.

Heck, as a Christian I believe in free will. Which means that legislating "faith" actually goes against what God would want - someone freely choosing to live their life and follow Christ because they choose to, not because they are forced to.

The founders truly were giants. They knew then that religion and politics makes one heckuva unholy union (pardon the pun).

If I choose to believe in Christ, or nothing at all, it is MY BUSINESS. It is NOT the business of the state, and frankly I would be scared to death if it were.

296 Jadespring  Fri, Sep 17, 2010 1:17:38pm

Well can't say I really wanted to watch this. Reading things here is enough.

So legislating morality appears to be an underlying theme. So how do they figure it's all going to work exactly? With some things like abortion and gays in the military just ban and the enforcement while odious isn't outside the realm of being possible and semi successful. It's the other stuff the gets me, I mean how on earth do people like O'Donnell figure other stuff like people having wrong sex or her (anti) pet issue is going to be enforced IF in some weird world they can some how 'legislate' it. I'm assuming they just don't think that far ahead or maybe that assumption is my own safety mechanism because I just don't want to or just can't imagine what they imagine the 'enforcement' part of these morality laws would look like.

On a lighter note if by some twist of reality people with views like O'Donnell actually get their dreams of a legislated morally sound American wonderland I've thought up of a bunch of business opportunities to take advantage of my geographic location. First thing I will do is buy a nice hotel/bed and breakfast somewhere along the boarders where people who like 'pets' can come and indulge safely and without fear of the pet gestapo.

Gives the policy "Pets accepted" a whole other meaning. :D

Palin who?

O'Donnell is Palin with extra everything.

How soon before Palin comes out with some crazy ass facebook post to make sure everyone is paying attention to her and not Christine?

O'Donnell seems to be another of these evangelical grifters who have figured out how to part fools from their money by running for office.

I've said this to my church-going friends many times. If the church is involved in the government, which church is it? Which denomination? They would be at war with each other before it even got off the ground.
