Religious Right’s Dream Team for 2012: Pence/Palin

Wingnuts • Views: 3,185

Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins announced the winners of the straw poll at this year’s Values Voter summit — and the fundamentalist dream team for 2012 is: Mike Pence for President, Sarah Palin for Vice President.

Mike Pence as President? Uh, OK. It’s more interesting that Palin didn’t make the cut; in fact she came in dead last in the straw poll for President, behind Pence, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich, in that order. That’s not simply lack of enthusiasm — it’s a rejection.

It makes sense when you consider that one of the main agendas of the Family Research Council (and the other fundamentalist groups represented at this event) is old school patriarchy; women must be subservient to men, and a female President is just unthinkable.

@evanmc_s: Mike Pence actually won both VP and Prez straw polls. Palin was 2nd place finisher, promoted to winner.

Women are just too likely to dabble into (sic) witchcraft. Imagine Sarah deciding she needs some eye of Newt for his newest hex on bin Laden.....

Montana GOP policy: Make homosexuality illegal

but they rejected my proposal to criminalize the practice of calculus

Looks like the Montana GOP is trying to wriggle their way out of this on their Facebook page. Sort of.

Question: Did the Montana Republican Party recently add a platform statement calling for homosexual acts to be illegal?

Answer: That position is in the current platform, but saying that we "added" it at our Platform convention in June 2010 is a commonly held misunderstanding. It has actually been there since the mid-nineties. At the time, homosexual acts were illegal, and the Montana Supreme Court struck that law down. The plank was added at the time because delegates to the convention did not support the Supreme Court changing the law.

Question: Why is it still there?

Answer: The Montana Republican Platform is not re-written every two years. Rather, we take the old platform, and delegates are allowed to change anything they can get a majority of delegates to vote for. That platform statement is still in the platform because none of the delegates from 2010, 2008, 2004, or before introduced an effort to change it.

Question: Will you change it?

Answer: The next Platform convention will happen in 2012. Delegates may bring up an effort to remove or change that platform statement then. Many probable delegates have already expressed an interest in doing so.

Question: Isn't there any way to change it right now?

Answer: The by-laws of the Montana Republican Party create only one legal way for us to change our platform: at a platform convention, which is held every even numbered year. Many potential platform delegates have expressed an interest in changing that statement, but there is no way for them to do that until the 2012 Platform Convention.

Question: Can't you just change it right now?

Answer: Party staff do not have a vote on the platform. Except for members of our staff or leadership who are also members of their county central committees, we don't get a say. A member of the party staff could open the web site for editing and strike out that sentence about homosexual acts, but it would not change the platform. Legally, the platform would still include that statement about homosexual acts.

Here's the whole thing.

Same Sex Relationships

Each state can determine the extended rights of same sex couples based on their own local values. We do, however, support classifying as a federal hate crime attacks on people based on their perceived sexual orientation. Yeah, and that idiot is a GOP strategist. Jack Burkman and this already made Wiki:

On September 17, 2010, on an episode of Fox Business News, Burkman called for the abolition of funding for the United States Postal Service and claimed "most of these guys working in the Post Office should be driving cabs, and I think we should stop importing labor from Nigeria and Ethiopia." A fellow guest, Senator Alphonse d'Amato called Burkman's comments "racist bullshit."

58 wrenchwench  Sat, Sep 18, 2010 1:33:25pm
In recent months I have spoken many times about how difficult and dangerous a period it is through which we now move. I would like to take this opportunity to say a word about the American spirit in this time of trial.

In the most critical periods of our nation's history, there have always been those fringes of our society who have sought to escape their own responsibility by finding a simple solution, an appealing slogan, or a convenient scapegoat.

[...]

Now we are face to face once again with a period of heightened peril. The risks are great, the burdens heavy, the problems incapable of swift or lasting solution. And under the strains and frustrations imposed by constant tension and harassment, the discordant voices of extremism are heard once again in the land. Men who are unwilling to face up to the danger from without are convinced that the real danger comes from within. They look suspiciously at their neighbors and their leaders.

[...]

So let us not heed these counsels of fear and suspicion. Let us concentrate more on keeping enemy bombers and missiles away from our shores, and concentrate less on keeping neighbors away from our shelters. Let us devote more energy to organize the free and friendly nations of the world, with common trade and strategic goals, and devote less energy to organizing armed bands of civilian guerrillas that are more likely to supply local vigilantes than national vigilance.

Let our patriotism be reflected in the creation of confidence rather than crusades of suspicion. Let us prove we think our country great by striving to make it greater. And, above all, let us remember that, however serious the outlook, the one great irreversible trend in world history is on the side of liberty -- and so, for all time to come, are we.

John F. Kennedy, November 18, 1961

Something that AmRen doesn't include from their source document,
Labor Force Characteristics by Race and Ethnicity, 2009 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

In general, the labor market problems experienced by
Blacks and Hispanics are associated with many factors, not
all of which are measurable. Some of these factors include
a tendency to be employed in occupations with high levels
of unemployment, lower average levels of schooling, greater
concentration in the central cities of urban areas where job
opportunities may be relatively limited, and the likelihood of
discrimination in the workplace
. These factors and others may
help explain the acute labor market difficulties Blacks and
Hispanics encounter, especially during economic downturns.

I attended an urban high school, with my graduating class around 60-65% black. When my classmates started work, got married, and started having kids, some of them felt guilty about leaving the neighborhoods in which they grew up. Whenever they'd tell me about that guilt, I told them, "For the sake of your kids and yourselves, you need to get out of there. They need the opportunities you wanted but didn't get, or had to fight like hell to get."

Thirty-plus years after graduation, a few of them thank me for the advice, and nothing makes me prouder than how well some of their kids are doing. I don't take credit for anything more than voicing what they already knew deep down.

Pence has a real chance at the nomination. My father, who passed away last year, lived in Muncie where Pence's district is based. Dad hated that "two-faced ***wipe" as he'd had dealings with him through local politics. The real problem with Pence is that he's not a RINO, he actually believes the party line. He's a stereotype of the central Indiana "Christians". Basically a bunch of hillbillies not smart enough to find any hills. (I was born there, my family is there, I know of what I speak) They are as polite as can be, but the exterior covers up true racism and an astounding disregard for facts. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, but they usually stay quiet or they're ostracized in the community. My Dad worked for union causes and Democratic issues for most of his adult life, and people like Mike Pence were what he fought hardest. He'll be a tough challenger, probably their most viable, but the man is a Republican party hack with Tea Party qualities.
