Tech Note: LGF Pages Rebooted

LGF • Views: 2,698

In case you haven’t noticed yet, LGF Pages underwent an extreme makeover last weekend, ending up with a new, cleaner look and some new features.

I’ve been on a consistency kick, so the design of the main LGF Pages index looks a lot like the other pages at LGF, with matching fonts and text styles. And each individual Page (where the comments live) now looks much more like the “standard” LGF template.

In addition to the redesign, there are two new features:

* The category of each Page (first thing in the second line of the byline) is now an active link; if you hover the mouse over it, a list of the 5 previous Pages with that category will pop up. If you click on the category name itself, you’ll go to the LGF Pages index showing all the posts in that category.

* The Twitter button (the little blue T logo) now includes a count of the number of times the shortened URL for that page has been clicked, via Twitter or elsewhere. When you post a Page to Twitter, its URL is automatically shortened using j.mp, and they kindly provide a statistics tracking service; you’ll see the spinning busy icon as our code contacts the j.mp server and retrieves the number of clicks on each link.

(And thanks to everyone for the excellent links you’ve been posting. There’s been some really great stuff.)

Pages rock. Thanks again for letting me hang my hat, and occasionally my head, here. It's a great service to be able to come to one place and get such a wide variety of links to peruse.

2 What, me worry?  Mon, Sep 20, 2010 1:59:47pm

Ditto! The Pages are great and adds a wonderful dimension to LGF. Part of my daily routine is to check the Up and Down comments and the Pages sidebar every morning.

Sweet.

I was gonna gripe a little about the "Share" button getting in the way of the -/+ dinger on the Pages, but you already fixed that. I love that the blockquotes in the Pages have a background color now.

5 Daniel Ballard  Mon, Sep 20, 2010 2:02:08pm

I love the gray b/g on the blockquote. Really lets whatever we have to say about a posted snip and link stand out. Glad to see the twitter deal, I'm always curious how the pages do visit wise, how much they get linked out there. Or accessed from our posts when we link in from within a thread.

How you got Google to grab the pages so fast... Amazing work there.

O'Donnell "Clearly a Criminal"

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, today filed a pair of complaints concerning Delaware Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell's use of more than $20,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses.

"Christine O'Donnell is clearly a criminal, and like any crook she should be prosecuted," CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan said in a release. "Ms. O'Donnell has spent years embezzling money from her campaign to cover her personal expenses. Republicans and Democrats don't agree on much these days, but both sides should agree on one point: thieves belong in jail not the United States Senate."

No wonder Wiccans are upset. Satanic alters is Sunday school scare tactic stuff. Outside of a few really creepy nerds in High School I never knew anyone who really worshiped Satan. Either she's making this up for drama or she hung out with a really creepy crowd.

She's a moron. She went to a few orgies, had a fucking blast, felt suspicious about having had a blast, decided that she was in fact now tainted rather than liberated, and now is trying to make up for it, imo.

As for the satanism stuff... she's just being a drama queen. I would bet large dollar amounts that no such thing happened. She's full of shit, and her face just screams "compulsive liar" to me. She wants attention, just like she wanted attention when she was in college, only now she is replacing sex with politics.

If she had any sense she would realize that being a skank in college for a spell is as American as apple pie. Just get over it and move on, lady, so the rest of us don't have to watch you work out your misplaced guilt in public.

I feel like I'm watching a large collection of the most neurotic people this country has ever produced publicly fail at psychotherapy and project all their issues onto a political agenda that really serves no purpose other than to attempt to make them look less repressed by institutionalizing their own repression on a national scale.

O'Donnell doesn't need to run for office, she needs about 10 years of work with a skilled psychoanalyst, some valium, copious amounts of guilt free sex, a slap in the face for spreading her sexual do's and don't's list around like its the gospel, and a good long nap.

She needs help. Serious help. If you see your own sexuality as a demon to be banished, you aren't mentally healthy enough to be a leader, imo. You are a child.

She is unfortunately a product of our society and the message that women live with every day. I don't know of any women who hasn't been stung by the madonna/whore crapology. In that sense, I pity the poor child, because you're right, that's what she is. At 41, she is well past the point of figuring this shit out.

I think it's disgusting. If you want to pray for the man the STFU and pray and don't talk about it. I makes me wonder if they're hoping he'll break down and 'give in' to faith at the last moment to which they take vindication in. It's a low downside proposition for them too.

Celestial Correspondence Regarding Prayers ( by Mark Twain)

Ever seen the "Letters of Note" website?

You're an idiot of the 33rd degree

In November of 1905, an enraged Mark Twain sent this superb letter to J. H. Todd, a patent medicine salesman who had just attempted to sell bogus medicine to the author by way of a letter and leaflet delivered to his home. According to the literature Twain received (p1,p2,p3,p4), the 'medicine' in question - The Elixir of Life - could cure such ailments as meningitis (which had previously killed Twain's daughter in 1896) and diphtheria (which had also killed his 19-month-old son). Twain, himself of ill-health at the time and very recently widowed after his wife suffered heart failure, was understandably furious and dictated the following letter to his secretary, which he then signed.

... and it is a thing of unutterable magnificence.

See theodicy, esp. "the Epicurian paradox".

There is a logical way out of that paradox: perhaps we have no idea what good and evil are, and no ability to discern between them.

I.e., maybe we are just very, very dumb.

Oh jeez, the Texas BOE is at it again. Just got this in an email from Texas Freedom Network:

Just months after politicizing new social studies curriculum standards for public schools, the state board will consider a resolution on Friday criticizing publishers for allegedly promoting "anti-Christian and pro-Islamic bias" in world history textbooks.

Predictably, much of the information included in this resolution is misleading or outright false. No such bias exists in Texas textbooks.

This appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to promote religious intolerance and air bigoted attacks against America's Muslim community.

Here are the idiot claims and the actual facts about the history books that aren't even being used anymore.

Lost in all the noise from the Value Voters Summit over the weekend was the results of the Swedish elections - apparently the Sweden Democrats (this is the far-right nationalist party) got almost 6% of the vote, and will likely have 20 parliamentary seats.

It gets worse.

[Link: www.thelocal.se...]

The TT news agency reports that an openly Nazi party, Svenskarnas Parti (‘The Swedes’ Party’), has earned a spot on the local council in Grästorp, a municipality of with about 3,000 residents in western Sweden.

The party used to be called the National Socialist Front (NSF), and the 102 votes it received were enough for it to place a representative on the council.

Centre Party council chair Roger Andersson called the development “regrettable”.

I want there to be very thin wire attached to my feet and hands as a lay in my casket at my funeral. Near the end of the service, I want to be made to rise up and dance like a marionette in front of my friends and family, suspended by the wires. Then, as my dance approaches its crescendo, I wish for the small explosive device hidden in my chest by the undertaker to go off, scattering chunks of me over the group of people gathered to mourn my death.

I need to immortalize these wishes in my will, and soon.

Officers kill armed assailant who shot 2 people at Fort Bliss

An armed assailant shot two people at a Fort Bliss convenience store at about 3 p.m. today before law enforcement officials killed the shooter, post officials said.

Law enforcement was on the scene about three minutes after the report of several shots being fired was received, said Col. Joseph Simonelli, the post's garrison commander. The post was never on lockdown and soldiers and employees at the post were notified with an emergency response system that uses e-mail. Simonelli declined to identify those involved during an afternoon press conference.

Simonelli would not say if the victims or the shooter were soldiers and he declined to provide their genders. He also did not say where the store was located.

The FBI is in charge of the investigation, he said.

This is not the easiest thing to share with 1000s of people, but I was with my dad when he passed and helped him cross over. It was probably my best and worst moment altogether.

I will say this, after he died, we were waiting for the coroner and they put him in a room. This was in hospice. I stood there for the longest time staring at that door, wanting to go in and see him, but really being terrified. When I worked up the strength to go in, the first thing that struck me was that he looked exactly like my grandmother, his mother. I saw her face there. But when I looked at him, he really wasn't there. It was a bag of bones. I didn't stay long, maybe a few minutes, but I'm glad I looked. I don't think I could have handled it tho, again.

I want to be wrapped in a shroud and put in a pine box. My husband says he's gonna chuck me into the everglades. Maybe I should get it in writing?

I just wrote some words about this topic

I knew the pain would come
How the mighty fall
The pain of loss was just at the door
A knock coming from below the floor
I knew we would say goodbye
I knew it at hello
I tried to stay with you
I gave you my word
But I gotta say goodbye my friend
My time is not long
Darkness divides us
But love will never time us
As I go below

What Have I gained?
What have I lost?
What about your love
Your fire..Your Frost?
What is this world?
What did we learn?
A few precious words
upon my turn
Goodbye I whisper through my tears
What have I gained?
What have I lost?
Goodbye I whisper

DATE: February 22, 1978
TO: All Employees, Tiger Oil Company & Tiger Drilling Co.
FROM: Edward Mike Davis

This memorandum is intended as an addendum to a memo I wrote on January 12, 1978 about people speaking to me. Any supervisor who has anything to say to me, day or night, the fastest way he can say it to me is too slow. The terms about not talking to me meant I do not have time to stop and talk to everyone -- saying hello, goodbye, goodnight, etc. -- that is what I was talking about. If you have business with me, the fastest way is too slow -- day or night.

I sense the winguts are felling a little nervous.....
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's very political 'joke'

But if it’s a joke, it’s a practical joke — and the targets are Glenn Beck, his followers, and the Republican Party candidates who face election three days after the event.

“Glenn Beck makes a big deal out of how, ‘whatever you believe, all these people are really passionate about the issues, and look at this amazing turnout,’” said the person familiar with the planning. “We’re going to show you how ridiculous Glenn Beck is because we’re going to put two comics up there and they’re going to have more people.”
....
But while the New York Times and the Washington Post ran stories and columns skeptical of Beck’s motives, the papers so far have devoted prominent placement to uncritical articles of the Stewart and Colbert rally.

That has led some on the right to charge that Stewart is getting a “pass” from the media for doing exactly the same thing that Beck was so harshly criticized for – holding a big rally on the National Mall to represent his political point of view around the same time that Stewart also has a new book coming out. .
...
If such positive media coverage continues, it seems entirely possible that the Comedy Central duo could outdraw their inspiration.

As always at the end of the day Wonkette is full of goodness, but this one really made me guffaw:

How To Fake a 68-Page Republican Jobs Plan With Gigantic Fonts

Say you’re a Republican candidate somewhere and unemployment is awful because the actual heart of our consumer-debt economy has died, forever, and plus you are “small government” so you can’t actually propose anything, but still you need to talk about jobs because in, say, Wisconsin, jobs come first! That is a good slogan, no? Now what to do about the other 67 pages of your 68-page jobs plan? What will you do about that, Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker?
Lest you think this is just some idiotic “temp worker” accidentally setting the font size to GINORMOUS and then letting an evil “local politics blogger” get hold of it, the actual PDF on the actual candidate’s website is named “SCOTT WALKER’S 68-PAGE JOBS PLAN!”, all caps and including the exclamation point. And that’s how it goes, for 68 pages that are the portable-document-format equivalent of having a crazy old person scream in your ear for an hour.

The Stouffers stuff is pretty good

Funny story,, YEARS ago a restaurant opened on the top floor of THE highest office tower in Boston . It was called Stouffers Top Of The Hub. (they also opened in many other cities, all on top floors of high rises,, all called "stouffers Top Of The,,,") Amazing views, but very expensive meals
For the most part, the meals weren't much different than their frozen entrees, just more quantity and dressed up prettier

I worked for Stouffer's as a broker rep before they were bought by Nestle. They enjoyed having their own show case restaurants and spent a lot of money on development. Then they were gobbled up by Nestle!

Maybe so. I've experienced the 'earthy' taste from tilapia before, but never this strong before.

I don't have any idea how people can eat fish, or any other seafood for that matter. On one hand, you've got fish, mussels, clams: meat with the texture of pudding. On the other hand, you've got lobsters, crabs, and other crustaceans: the cockroaches of the sea.

If you find fish has the consistency/texture of pudding, you're over cooking it. Fish should be flaky.

atrios has just posted a link to an article about this charmer, a mr jim russell, who apparantly is the republican congression candidate in NY-18

It has been demonstrated that finches raised by foster parents of a different species of finch will later exhibit a lifelong sexual attraction toward the alien species. One wonders how a child's sexual imprinting mechanism is affected by forcible racial integration and near continual exposure to media stimuli promoting interracial contact. The most serious implication of human sexual imprinting for our genetic future is that it would establish the destructiveness of school integration, especially in the middle and high-school years. One can only wonder to what degree the advocates of school integration, such as former NAACP attorney Jack Greenberg, were conscious of this scientific concept. It also compounds the culpability of media moguls who deliberately popularize miscegenation in films directed toward adolescents and pre-adolescents. In the midst of this onslaught against our youth, parents need to be reminded that they have a natural obligation, as essential as providing food and shelter, to instill in their children an acceptance of appropriate ethnic boundaries for socialization and for marriage.

The sociobiological warfare that our youth is subjected to is likely to be even more diabolical since it appears to deliberately exploit a biological theory of sexual imprinting at the critical period of sexual maturity. Movies like this past year's spate of miscegenationist titles, Save the Last Dance, Crazy / Beautiful and O, a parody of Othello, appear deliberately designed to exploit the critical period of sexual imprinting in their target audiences of white pre-adolescent girls and adolescent young women.

...

There is now afoot a conscious effort to de-Europeanize and to re-Judaize Christianity, through scriptural revision, internal treachery and external pressure.

...

The importance of applying eugenic measures in the West becomes evident from Richard Lynn's recent work on Dysgenics and his just-released seminal work Eugenics: A Reassessment.

re: #265 b_sharp

Eating spiders is one thing, but who thought of drinking goat milk?

It's better to eat it...

Feta (Greek: φέτα) is a brined curd cheese traditionally made in Greece. Since 2002, feta has been a protected designation of origin product. According to the relevant EU legislation, only those cheeses produced in a traditional way in some areas of Greece (mainland and the island of Lesvos), and made from sheep's milk, or from a mixture of sheep's and goats’ milk (up to 30%) of the same area, may bear the name "feta".[1]

However, similar white brined cheeses (often called 'white cheese' in various languages) are found in the eastern Mediterranean and around the Black Sea. Similar white cheeses produced outside the EU are often made partly or wholly of cow's milk, and they are sometimes called 'feta'.

Feta is an aged crumbly cheese, commonly produced in blocks, and has a slightly grainy texture. It is used as a table cheese, as well as in salads (e.g the Greek salad), pastries and in baking, notably in the popular phyllo-based dishes spanakopita ("spinach pie") and tyropita ("cheese pie") and combined with olive oil and vegetables. It can also be served cooked or grilled, as part of a sandwich or as a salty alternative to other cheeses in a variety of dishes.
