Christine O’Donnell Takes Palin’s Advice, Will Shun Media

Politics • Views: 4,609

Sarah Palin got outraged at the accurate reports that she told anti-wanking GOP candidate Christine O’Donnell to only “speak through Fox News,” but O’Donnell obviously took Palin’s advice to heart: O’Donnell vows no more national media appearances.

In an interview on Fox News’s “Hannity” show, O’Donnell, who canceled spots on CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, said that going on national-media outlets would not help her win the election.

That’s right — she’s openly admitting that if she speaks to the national media, it will hurt her chances of getting elected. This is the new default position for GOP candidates.

I believe this a the wrong decision for any candidate...

but I would think the website which helped bring down Dan Rather would be a bit sympathetic to her line of reasoning

(and I do believe she is an awful candidate, but on the other hand, Al Franken went from comic to Senator, so I suppose anything is possible)

And wingnuts will argue that it's liberals that are the spineless, weak squishes who lack the testicular fortitude to defend their beliefs.

What a joke. The modern GOP are pathetic.

said that going on national-media outlets would not help her win the election.

Not only that, it could hurt the chances of fellow Republicans everywhere. Palin's probably not the only one encouraging this strategery.

That's ridiculous. They're not even close to the same thing.

The Dan Rather case, IIRC (since I wasn't here at the time), involved forged documents being used to make a case. With O'Donnell, it's her own verified words being used to expose her as a batshit insane nutjob, since she's on video saying them. You can't compare the two at all.

If she wants to run for office, she should expect to face the media and answer questions. Same goes for Palin or anyone else. Period.

7 lawhawk  Wed, Sep 22, 2010 9:10:35am

Just because she's not going to talk to the national media doesn't mean that her craziness isn't going to be exposed by the local media. She can't shun all media outlets, especially if she (or any other candidate running for office) wants to get her positions out there in the public eye.

Shunning the media outlets means that she loses a valuable free venue to get her message out.

This strategery ends up costing (literally - because of the need to buy ads) these candidates more than it would potentially help them staying on-message.

However, this isn't a particularly new strategy in politics. Incumbents often attempt to run campaigns where they say little - to avoid potential gaffes and pitfalls. Even candidates running for higher office try to do this - in NY - Cuomo is trying to avoid gaffes by limiting his public statements (avoiding a mess that led to him losing against Spitzer in his last attempt to win the governor's race there). He's now up against Paladino who had a good showing in a single Quinnipiac poll, which has gotten everyone atwitter over Cuomo's slipping chances, even though the demographics aren't in Paladino's favor by any stretch.

Where the strategy is new is that it is being proposed for candidates running for office for the first time - it literally is an attempt to hide the crazy. That's not a good thing - and it isn't a good thing for the electorate in general when candidates hide their true positions and interests.

From a political standpoint, it makes perfect sense - when the interest is to win - facts, logic, and reasoning go by the boards.

And it wasn't so long ago when the right wing was slamming the media for being too compliant and not questioning a certain candidate for President about his background and affiliations and statements.

Now, we've got those on the right wing ascribing to a notion that they shouldn't take questions or be interviewed by the same media and we should just accept this?

Ever heard the expression "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen"?

Any person or organization that interacts with the public will always be open to scrutiny. If you don't want media attention on you, don't get into politics period.

Both the Dan Rather thing and this Christine O'Donnel stuff have significant national implications as far as truth is concerned. O'donnell refusing to go on national media is a sign she either feels:

a) she won't be treated fairly b) she'll say something that would end up hurting her or making her look stuipd (likely)
c) doesn't really have much of a campaign platform together (no, "Obama is a socialist!" does not count as a platform, sorry GOP) or d) All of the above.

If you make a decision to pursue public life or to become involved in something of significant national importance, you'd be better be prepared to spend some face time in front of the cameras. Hell, politics 101 states that any aspiring politician needs to get comfortable and understand how to deal with the media, a lot of the Tea Party "outsiders" do not understand such fundamentals and it's hurting them, that's why they run to the safe haven of Fox News.

re: #11 FriarsTale

You're not making your point, is the problem.

Dan Rather's 'hatchet job' failed, utterly. It disgraced Rather, led to his resignation, and closed the door, basically, on any further inquiry into Bush's National Guard service.

So, if you're using that as the basis for why to avoid the media, you've got rather the wrong end of the stick; that incident would say you should confront the media, because if they attack you unfairly they'll wind up resigning in disgrace.

re: #11 FriarsTale

Uh, no. I'm not.

The Dan Rather case involved fake documents being used to manufacture outrage. Christine O'Donnell's own words and actions have done more to damage her credibility as a candidate than anything else. The outrage doesn't have to be manufactured when the truth is enough on its own.

Two points here, and I know you're not trying to troll here, so I'm going to do give a serious answer to both. (which as a relative newbie probably is a bit presumptive, but I'm doing it anyway :)

First the idea that LGF took down Rather and therefore should be sympathetic to O'Donnell misses the most important purpose of this blog, it's an Anti-Idiot blog. O'Donnell is an idiot, and I say that without malice towards her, I'm sure she's a nice person if you sat down to have tea with her, and I'm sure I could have a polite conversation with her. But as far as being at all qualified to be a Senator? She has neither the experience nor the knowledge base to make any sort of informed decision on legislation. To make matters worse, she doesn't even realize how much she doesn't know. And then to make matters even worse than that, she doesn't have a cadre of well informed advisers to help her become informed, or even remind her that really, she doesn't know crap. She's not only an idiot, she's down right dangerous.

Which brings us to the second point. Franken. I don't agree with a number of his views and ideas, but when I listen to him talk about things, he brings a cogent and well organized argument to the table and I can recognize and accept that there is a logic there, even if I don't agree with the conclusions. I don't get that sense with O'Donnell, and no matter what you think of Franken's comedic past, he's taken his responsibility as Senator seriously and treated it with gravitas that I wish we could see more often in congress.

I think you're missing the point though, it's one thing for someone to use forged documents (Rather) to 'hatchet' someone. However, as pointed out above, it's quite another for a candidate to have her publicly aired views being used against him or her.

And really, calling her a 'weak candidate' is like saying the Atlantic ocean is a bit damp. :)

24 Nick Schroeder  Wed, Sep 22, 2010 9:39:48am

The fact of the matter is this this makes perfect sense, and is her only viable strategy at this point. Modern Republicans, particularly those of the teabagger variety, espouse crazy, idiotic opinions that no sane person would ever get behind. The solution, of course, is to hide your true platform and run as 'not a Democrat' and hope for the best.

Given a history of consistent propaganda alleging a strong liberal bias in the national media, much of the GOP base would likely be sympathetic to this kind of behavior. If you are convinced that the media is strongly biased against a candidate, you might not have any problem with said candidate avoiding interviews.

This tactic works with the base, because it is consistent with the "they are all out to get us" message. Of course, it doesn't work with anyone who hasn't already bought into the whole white christian victimhood meme, but then, they aren't going to vote republican anyway.

At the risk of going off topic, The violence has settled down and I do find the trigger (excuse?) for the Palestinian rioting to being interesting:

The guard shot the 32-year-old man in a pre-dawn incident, a police spokesman said, saying that the guard told police investigators he had opened fire after his car was blocked and stoned by dozens of Palestinians.

The security guard told police that he was driving through the town alone and stopped at a gas station, despite the guidelines which forbade him from stopping in the local stations. The guard added that he feared that he would be abducted after several Palestinians blocked his car.

Silwan, located immediately below the southern section of the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, is a focus of tension between around 300 Israeli settlers, who moved into the neighborhood, and approximately 55,000 Palestinian residents.

Bolding is mine. So you have an Israeli settlement where the Israeli's have moved in and are out numbered over 100 to 1, and a security guard decides to ignore guidelines, feels threatened (which I can't blame him on that) and kills someone. Mind you, throwing stones at someone with a gun is a bad idea no matter how you cut it. That's just asking to get shot.

At the same time, if you're going to start moving people into territory that is already occupied by someone else, and the belief is (justified or not) that the movement into the territory is a precursor to having the territory annexed, there's going to be some... tension.

None other than Karl Rove raised questions about her checkered past and her ultimate electability.

He later said he was doing it entirely in his "fair abnd balanced" capacity as a Fox news commentator, and then went on to admit that this position clashes with his position in the GOP, which involves supporting any and all nominated candidates.

Of course it was Karl Rove behind Rathergate, I see it as his ultimate evil genius masterpiece of Machivellianism.

I assume he knew those documents were out there and that the fellow interviewed had ssen them, he circulated the fake copies to have them virst "verified" and then taken down. At which point the discussion tailspinned off over the provenance of the documents and the scandal around Bush was successfully defused.

(I joined LGF long after this topic had run its course, I am just getting in my belated two cents)

O'Donnell is taking aleaf from the Palin Playbook and playing the victim of a smear campaign when all the media are doing is reporting the things she has already put out.

Ideally, Palin and the Tea Party candidates are just supposed to be surfaces onto which voters can project their notions of what a conservative candidate should be.

Problem is, they keep talking and saying things that embarass them, and often do so in an embarassing manner. The Press really has to bend over backwards not to put it in an embarassing light, which none of the major media outlets outside Fox News is not about to do for their benefit.

Franken's attention to detail and to the minutiae of a bill or an issue is what made his radio talk show so dull at times that you could feel your eyes glazing over and your brain begging for someone to start screaming "Baba Booey! re: #50 Fozzie Bear

You're not playing close enough attention. The MSM has gone to bat for many Republican administrations in the past. Most notoriously for the Reagan administration where the White House Press Corps literally worked for them on bended knee. Chris Matthews was a strong supporter of military action and the Bush administration after 9/11 and in many ways felt a tingle up his leg much like he later did with Obama.

While they won't compare with Fox News you will find conservative view points in many of the outlets you list. Back in the old days the Washington Post was considered "right wing" by many on the left and today we find:

The Post's editorial positions on foreign policy and economic issues have seen a definitively conservative bent: it has steadfastly supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq, warmed to President George W. Bush's proposal to partially privatize Social Security, opposed a deadline for U.S. withdrawal from the Iraq War, and advocated free trade agreements, including CAFTA.

CBS has been increasingly and openly critical of the Obama administration in recent months. Jake Tapper of ABC is a free agent and generally finds a large conservative audience. CNN has been treating the Tea Party with kid gloves after a "rought start" early on. They even go as far as having Pam Geller as a frequent guest.

I can keep typing.

Wow now I need to take a quick walk down memory lane and see what else Mr. Saxby Chambliss is famous for...

Seems that Chambliss' office is one of two possible GOP sources for the comment:

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss is investigating claims that a gay slur posted to a blog Tuesday may have come from a worker inside his office.

The slur was posted Tuesday afternoon to an online article on Joe.My.God about the Senate's failure to advance a bill repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" law, which prevents gays from serving openly in the military.

The comment, "All faggots must die," was posted by a user going by the name of "Jimmy."

The attack would have disappeared into the wasteland of inappropriate online comments, except blog author Joe Jervis looked up the sender's IP address and posted it, apparently on a whim.

"I very uncharacteristically checked its IP, which I normally don't do," he said. "I have a lot of IT geeks among my readers and they geo-located it immediately. ... It was definitely coming through an official federal U.S. Senate server."

Jervis said his readers traced the address to the local office of either Chambliss or Sen. Johnny Isakson, both Georgia Republicans. The offices are located next to one another.

Really? do you honestly really believe what you just typed? I'm curious, what are the agendas for the vast left wing conspiracy? you've got the vague, broad brushed statements down, but let's see some specifics.

is it to get America controlled by the Unions? if so, they're doing a poor job of it considering the declining membership of Unions since the 70's.

To turn America into a socialist bastion? Considering that the most we're going to see in taxes is an expiration of the tax cuts and a return to that socialist Reagan era level of 39 percent, not so much.

Those are just two specific counter examples of how, if there is such a vast left wing media, they're probably the most ineffective propaganda arm I've ever seen.

So you've thrown the accusation out there, back it up.

O'Donnell didn't ruin the GOP's chances of getting that Senate seat. They did it to themselves by selecting an obviously crazy, blatantly awful candidate for office because she checked off the right answers on the ideological litmus test.

New Poll. 1 in 5 Americans think President Obama is a cactus.

When asked why they agreed with the statement "President Obama is a large succulent plant composed of specialized cells designed for water retention in arid climates," many responded that they "just know," claiming the president only acts like a human being for political purposes and is truly a cactus at heart.

The MSM Fox News long ago took off their collective masks and have no qualms showing their open hatred for half the country blacks, Hispanics, gays, Muslims, atheists, feminists, scientists, city dwellers, liberals, immigrants, poor people, the unemployed, people who believe evolution and climate change are real, etc. ABC/NBC/CBS/MSNBC/NY Times/Washington Post, Fox, Beck, Limbaugh etc have been propaganda arms for the democrat Republican party since the 70s 90s. They can't honestly report the news as long as their agendas are front and center and they donate to the Republican party directly and accept funds from Saudi princes.

Fixed.

That's an entirely self-inflicted wound. She ran as the Tea Party darling, and the teabaggers are out there demanding her kind of crazy as a more "pure" conservatism. Mike Castle was considered too liberal and a RINO, so they voted him out.

O'Donnell didn't ruin the GOP's chances of getting that Senate seat. They did it to themselves by selecting an obviously crazy, blatantly awful candidate for office because she checked off the right answers on the ideological litmus test.

A good chance most of those votes were cast under the assumption that O'Donnell was the "Greater Good."

The McConell quote is priceless:

"If the president says he is a human being, I'll take him at his word," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday on Meet the Press. "Though I've never heard him complain about being thirsty. Not once. That could be a coincidence, I suppose, but it's really not my place to say."

The nuts are in control of the asylum now. That's what the "Tea Party" is. It's not a new movement, it's the GOP base taking control of what used to be a carefully controlled, top-down institution. The base has bought all the bullshit that has been fed to them for years by the party leadership, and now they actually want all the crazy unfulfillable mutually-exclusive promises fulfilled, like a balanced budget, increased military spending, and lower taxes. You can't have all those things, because it doesn't make sense, but they'll push for it anyway.

You can't manipulate a large group of people with propaganda for decades and expect them not to act on it, no matter how absurd it is.

The reason she won was because voter turnout was shitty. If another 10,000 Republicans had bothered to show up, Castle probably would have won, but a lot of people probably just assumed he'd win the primary and didn't bother going to the polls.

".. she’s openly admitting that if she speaks to the national media, it will hurt her chances of getting elected."

Well, let's be fair: she is running in a Delaware election, not a national one, so it would be reasonable to stick to Delaware news orgs. (Or is she ducking from them as well?)

About Dan Rather: the Bush story didn't "depend on" an (apparently) forged document - it was something that came in late, and as it fit with everything else in CBS's investigation, they weren't as careful in vetting it as they should have been. As for the content - the secretary to the purported author (deceased) said no, she hadn't typed it, but it did reflect his view of GW.

If CBS had any guts, they would have said something like "Look, questions have been raised about the authenticity of the letter we included, so in the interest of fairness, we are running the same story next week with any reference to the dubious letter removed." And gone ahead and aired the corrected story.

(I thought that ABC could have done the same thing years before, when they ran a story on the tobacco industry. There were a couple of minor errors in the story, which the tobacco PR people seized on, and ABC had to admit were errors. Big tobacco took the admission to discredit the whole story. I thought ABC should have said, "Yes, we made some errors, so in the interest of fairness, we are running the same story next week, with the errors corrected, as the tobacco industry acknowledges the rest of the report is accurate." Of course, they didn't do any such thing. No guts. )

OBAMA'S WARS: Deeply Divided White House Portrayed in Explosive Book

What we have is all the media falling over themselves to pimp Bob Woodward's latest book, which claims to detail the inner workings of the Obama White House.

It's a race to see which media outlet can pull the most salacious, rude, crude, or misleading headline, depending on the audience to which they are seeking.

Primaries are the thing that will ultimately destroy the GOP. With each nutjob nominated, the GOP loses more moderates. With every moderate they lose, the larger the proportional representation of nutjobs within the GOP base, which, in turn, guarantees that more nutjobs will be nominated. The cycle repeats ad infinitum.

This is why you shouldn't deliberately try to appeal to bigots and morons, as the GOP has been doing for decades. The danger is that it might actually work a little too well.

Chambliss repudiated the comment on the local news in Atlanta and is invetigating the incident. I wouldn't pin this on him any more than Obama is to blame for a staffer flying the Che flag in a campaign office.

The comment is awful and the staffer needs to be let go if it can be pinned to a specific person.

And I have a personal dislike of Franken for being an inconsiderate boob to my wife. If he's taken the time to educate himself about the policies on which he acts, good for him. His personality leaves much to be desired as far as I am concerned.

He's intelligent when it comes to policy. That doesn't mean he's schooled in the social graces.

I'm sorry your wife had a bad encounter with him, but that doesn't mean he's worthless as a senator. I don't much like him myself (not that it matters, since I don't live in Minnesota), but he has surprised me with his job performance thus far. I may disagree with his positions, but it's obvious that he thinks his positions out, and that's not something you can say for very many legislators.

You don't run away in a case like this. You face them, show no fear, and win (or break even) on their turf. If you avoid them or run away, they smell fear, and in cases like this, fear = ratings = profits.

In any event--Much of the electorate understands the bias inherent in almost any media outlet, and the wiser ones discount accordingly. If I read a NYT or WaPo article, I know their bias and adjust for it.

In Ms. O'Donnell's case, rather than run, she should embrace the left-wing slant and use it to her advantage. Instead, like Failin' Palin, she runs away.
