How is everyone doing?

That kind of poverty is always ugly. Making illegal guns is a problem in many places. Most such weapons are piss-poor. The best pair I ever heard of were in Finland: Someone actually handmade both an M1928 Thompson (complete with 50-round 'L' drum) and an MP-40. That would have been someone you don't want to piss off.

Well, let's just say much of white America would be even more freaked out about Obama and the "them". And the media coverage would be totally different.

I offer up navel oranges imported from Australia as further proof.
The local supermarket has them... Now, California still grows "valencia" oranges, which ripen in the summer, as well as the more common navel oranges that ripen in winter. However, instead of eating the locally grown valencias - which taste better than the navel oranges - the stores import navel oranges from Australia, that taste like crap.

And actually, China had some of the most collectible illegal copies of all time: the Tai Yuan Soldier factory turned out a number of 1921 Thompson copies. The most famous of these copies fell into the hands of a Japanese army captain who used it to kill 7 Marines and wound 3 more on Mount Suribachi before finally being killed by a grenade. The Thompson was brought back to the US as a war trophy and still exists.

Since I've been bitchin' and moanin' all evening, here is another one:
The local supermarket usually has standing in front of the main doors various beggars groups trying to raise money.
This week it's the Boy Scouts.
They're selling bags of candied (caramel) corn and other similar sweets.
It's junk food pure and simple.
Yet they have these young guys - probably about 7 or 8 years old - hawking the stuff to raise money.
It dawned on me that these youngsters are just tools of Big Ag. The holy Boy Scouts, who the the right-wing idolize so much in this country, are just smiling faces to push corn syrup.
If the Boy Scouts really were about character why not have them work on a local farm (that is still independently own and operated by a family farmer) on weekends and then sell the produce at the end of year?

I hear your complaint about local produce. It's horrifying. Publix sells very little of it and even though Florida grows less than it used to, we get very little local produce.
But I'm a big fan of the Scouts. Girl Scouts anyway. As to the Boys, I don't think they should have to suffer because of a bunch of morons.

Frum has a poster of Lenin and is claiming he wants a Counter Revolution as opposed to the Conservative Revolution going on now. This picture reveals what he is, a Totalitarian Progressive.
Actually I don’t “have” a poster of Lenin. What you are looking at in the ad is a Warsaw street installation. A giant red-tinted image of Lenin confronted an equally huge white-tinted image of Josef Pilsudski, commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Russo-Polish war of 1920. The Polish language street sign visible in the picture might (you’d think) act as some kind of tip-off.
But then, hints and tips must bounce off the skull of anyone who could write the sentence quoted above. Which brings us back to the ad: This website exists because I devoutly believe that there exists a huge national audience of people who believe in limited government, free markets, technological progress, and a strong American role in the world – but who do not want to be represented and championed by paranoid idiots. They would have proudly voted for Ronald Reagan in 1984, but they recoiled from Sarah Palin in 2008. They are for freedom, but against dumb. And some have the time, energy and passion to join the cause personally.
Maybe you’re such a person yourself? Or know one? We could use your help. Apply for a FrumForum internship – or send the link to an interested younger person – and help us storm the Winter Palace of stupidity!
You know you're sane when Rodan calls you a "Totalitarian Progressive".

The orange groves usually had high brick or cinder brick walls around them, with the only the green tops showing over the wall. Yes, they were all along the highway, from Miami down to the Keys.
Much of that is gone. They started disappearing around 10 years ago during the citrus canker scare which was a fiasco. They started cutting personal trees. I lost 4 fruit trees after they told me my trees were NOT effected.
Citrus canker, btw, does nothing to the fruit. It's perfectly fine, it just has ugly lumps on the skin and won't sell.
I tried to find a good article on it, but came up short :)

Bad news for "America's Sheriff", Joe Arpaio:
[Link: www.azcentral.com...]
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office misused at least $50 million from a fund for jail operations, and county supervisors may have to use the general fund to repay the money, top county officials say.Findings by the county's Office of Management and Budget show the Sheriff's Office tapped the money to pay for functions not allowed under jail-fund rules, such as salaries for deputies who worked on public-corruption investigations into county supervisors and judges.
...
The questioned spending came at a time when sheriff's officials failed to meet the state-mandated function of getting inmates to court on time, prompting a chief deputy to be held in contempt.
...
Officials agree the county must act to reimburse the jail fund. The board could decide to make a lump-sum payment, reimburse the fund over time, or take the money out of the county's contingency fund.
I guess this means Joe won't be running for President?
Also:
The board has set a hearing next Wednesday for the Sheriff's Office to appear and explain why it should not be held in contempt for not turning over additional financial and other records.
I think I'm sensing a pattern here...

I hope that helps things. Newark needs more than money in its schools. The good news is that the state still runs Newark's schools and Chris Christie will ensure the money is spent honestly. This is a major chance to turn those schools around, if the chance is taken.

I remember this back when I was a kid. Regarding Eagelton who was to be McGovern's running mate.
Eagleton was McGovern's vice presidential nominee in 1972, but dropped out after it was revealed that he had been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment and had twice undergone electroshock therapy for depression. McGovern chose Sargent Shriver to replace Eagleton and lost to Richard Nixon in the general election.
This is interesting as well:
Eagleton was considered liberal, but he criticized busing to achieve school desegregation and, as a practicing Roman Catholic, strongly opposed abortion.

Hey everyone...went and saw a very good play tonight up in Marin called "The Red and Brown Water" - cast of about seven African Americans and one white guy, set in a New Orleans neighborhood, about this girl, Oya, who was a great runner and had an offer for a college scholarship (the white guy played the college recruiter), but stayed home an extra year because her mom was ill...well, mom dies, Oya hooks up with one guy, and a year later the college isn't interested in her any longer, so she's stuck in the 'hood...suffice it to say, the story goes downhill from there.
It was very well done - stage had no props...just a blank slate, and the actors did all the "music" with hands, feet, and voices - some beautiful acapella singing, and the one thing that took a little getting used to was the actors reciting the stage direction to the audience as they spoke (eg: Oya: "Oya looks up and sighs...Sigh").

So I put an offer on the remodeled house with more space, but a smaller yard. It came down to the monthly payment. The three main things I see needing to be done in a short time are building a deck/patio, putting a carport in the back with an electric gate and putting in a good hood over the cooktop.

I offered 175K, 20K lower than the asking price, plus 6K for closing costs. I would have offered 170, because I know they paid 122 earlier this year, but I am guessing they had at least 30k in remodeling. If I have to bet, it will end up being 179 to 182, but I am hoping they bite at 175. If they counter at 185, I will go to 180 and hold. I am still deciding what to do if they don't counter. It is a corporation (LLC) that did the remodel, so I am hoping and guessing that they have more than one project going at a time and aren't dependent on getting all that they are asking for, but do want the cash flow.

" A newspaper's stunning, front-page editorial of seeming surrender to drug capos has set off a national debate from the presidential palace to Mexico's equivalent of the water cooler — its ubiquitous town squares.
"What do you want from us?" Our Scout troop does an auction with donated goods to raise money for camp. The church members and other sponsors are very generous with their services and gifts, the scouts raise almost everything they need for camp in one evening and the people who come and bid get some really neat stuff (from airplane rides to gas grills to homemade jams) for a bargain price. I just hope things shake out for the better sooner rather than later. A see-saw of "incumbent backlash" elections won't be any way to run a country. Though I guess it would also show considerable delusion in the leadership of the respective parties when they continue to interpret the thrashings back and forth as a mandate rather than a symptom of a citizenry being unhappy with their representation from either side. (And arguably reacting in the only peaceful manner they can.)

To be fair, China is simply acting in its own interest, which is what all countries do. If we keep shoveling money to China, this kind of thing is inevitable (in fact, it's probably inevitable regardless of what we do).

I think the logistics and tech for a effective ultralight-Humvee are a bit more than five years away. Effective being that the vehicle is not a boondoggle in terms of maintenance, operational requirements, or massively expensive for the designed task.

Technology sharing is more limited, rather business and governments are more keen to have the manufacturing shared to win the contracts. "we'll buy if you produce them here".
The Chinese have a history of taking the technology of a manufacturing facility within their country and using it to duplicate the same product - sometimes in the same building - and completing against that manufacturer.

re: #195 Lidane
Okay, here goes.
Fatah is now claiming that it will crack down on Palestinian rioters in Jerusalem following yesterday's riots. "They don't want to give Israel the excuse to stop further negotiations."
Palestinian sources said the PA wants to see the violence ebb "so not to give Israel an excuse for agitation while peace talks were ongoing and so close to the end of the settlement freeze."The sources added that the PA wanted to refrain from any escalation which Israel may use an excuse to delay negotiations.
Both Fatah and PA sources said they believe the violence will die down Thursday, although they could not rule out sporadic violence during the three-day mourning period called for Sarchan.
Senior Fatah member Mohammad Dahlan said Israel was trying to stir up a third intifada, defining Sarchan's shooting by an Israeli security guard as "crossing all the red lines."
What's left unsaid is that the incident was precipitated and caused by Palestinian rioters in the first place- when they attacked a vehicle carrying private Israeli security guards heading to their homes in Silwan. They were cornered, cut off, and rocks were thrown at the vehicle. The security guard fired in the air to no effect, and took a single shot at the rioters - killing one. That led to a mass outbreak of rioting in all the usual locations.
But for the Palestinians rioting and throwing rocks at the Israelis, the Israeli security guard would not have fired in self-defense. No rioting by Palestinians, no additional riots at the Temple Mount.
It's just more of the same from Fatah.

No it isn't.
I was just having a discussion with my older children yesterday about how the lunacy on the right has turned me off from a long relationship with the GOP. They asked if I was going to identify as a Democrat now and I replied "they haven't done anything to gain my trust as a party either."
I'm guessing that there is a critical mass of people who are unhappy with the way our representatives are not representing us. The Democrats will take the hit this time around because they are by and large the incumbant party. But the Socons in the GOP are fools to think it is their ideas and platforms that are winning them votes.
They're running on fiscal responsibility, kinda like the dems did during the Bush years, but they'll take this victory as a mandate to push for all their pet projects. They'll win this time and in 2012 only to take it on the chin again later. Short-term memory issues seems to be a big problem when someone gets elected.

Another day, and another poll in NY for the race between Paladino and Cuomo.
Democrats can breathe a sigh of relief as the Siena College poll tracks the Rassmussen poll, finding Cuomo comfortably in the lead 57% to 24%. That suggests that yesterday's touted Quinnipiac College poll was an outlier when it claimed that there was a six point spread (nearly within the 3.5+/- MOE).
I don't think that Paladino stands much of a chance, even taking Quinnipiac at face value. It will turn on GOTV and getting Democrats to go vote while GOPers/TP are very energized at this point.

An official good morning to the Lizard Community.
No Philly weather report today since I'm using an interior room today with no windows. Redeeming feature is close access to the coffee and water dispensers.
Expanding my IT knowledge today with more jack-of-all-trades work. Since there are office moves going on, and all the tech support people are in another city doing a network conversion, I got tasked with troubleshooting network connection issues here.
So I get to run around every so often this week to figure out why a computer can't access the network after being moved. Including the odd, almost quantum-like, behavior of network switch cables. A cable that works between the switch and a certain data port fails to work when changed to a different port. Use a different switch cable to the port and things work. Then check the faulty cable with a third port - and it works.
O_o
I normally work with databases and application security. My hardware training is minimal beyond knowing the basics of hooking various devices up.
Need. More. Coffee.

Bush's AIDS work at the end of his term was the one positive thing he did, but not without some speed bumps...first, he promised 15 billion then delivered about 2 billion in aid the first two years...and the "no aid for distributing condoms in favor of Xian abstinence programs" thing (which changed, I believe) also brought him a lot of criticism in the early days. All file sharing applications are evil, but even more evil when one tries to apply client/server to file sharing applications.
Quickbooks is a file sharing app, which means that unless there is a data server already running the first person to log in becomes the file host, unbeknownst to them. Which means if they shut down, everybody goes down.
Then in the process of trying to get the @#$@!@! remote data server to work, the connectivity doesn't always recognize that the host file has been set up to allow remote access.

From Wiki:
...Tran worked as an intern and later as a staff aide for Congressman Bob Dornan and for State Senator Ed Royce while a student at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1990......Recently, Van Tran kicked off his campaign to unseat Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) after having been heavily recruited by national Republican leaders.
According to Politico, during summer 2009, GOP leaders like Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Lynn Westmoreland will travel parts of the country to recruit candidates to run against incumbent Democrats for the next election cycle in 2010. "McCarthy likes to talk about Van Tran, a Vietnamese-born Orange County Republican he has recruited to run against Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Tran raised more than $250,000 in his first three months campaigning, ensuring Sanchez will have a fight on her hands for the first time in years."*
Tran's election campaign for the House of Representatives has since been endorsed by Senator John McCain.[1]
Nonetheless, what Sanchez said was ugly.

His vision and his message, and he has said he will continue to work to deserve the honor. Why can't you just accept this as a positive thing? People (especially teabaggers) act like Obama's winning the Nobel was some kind of terrorist attack on our country.
It was. The sekrit Norwegian Moose-lim committee promoted one of their own sleeper agents so that America would be lulled into a state of defenselessness. Then when we woke up one morning to find ourselves under Commie Sharia law and subject to oppressive federal fatwa it would then be our own fault for trusting a Kenyan plant...

Then I see that the Dems are thinking about not taking advantage of some good old fashioned class warfare right before an election because I guess they are morons and want to see their numbers dwindle.
Then I see that the Republicans have issued another "Contract on America" spewing about getting rid of all the health care reforms passed and replacing them with health care reforms that are actually just like the health care reforms they are getting rid of but with no way to pay for them.

1. Legalize Pot
and
2. Get rid of tax breaks for corporations who take jobs overseas.

Andrew Cuomo used to run Mario's campaigns. He knows how to slug it out if necessary. I'm figuring that he'll try to let the state Democratic party and others do the serious mudslinging, while he tries to run an upbeat positive campaign. That said, he released a new ad where he pretty much calls Paladino an insider who's gotten all manner of tax breaks with no actual benefit to the state (creating 1 job for millions in tax breaks).

Progressive class warfare is difficult in American because everyone is middle class. Any household making 30,000 to 250,00 dollars per year is part of the "middle" class. And some people extend that up to 500,000 dollars per year. For those of you keeping track at home that means everything from the 35th percentile to the 95th percentile is "middle class". This makes class warfare a little difficult.

$532 Tax Bill
...
Separately, IRS data shows 80 percent of those facing higher taxes under Obama earn between $200,000 and $500,000. An analysis by the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation in August concluded their taxes would increase on average by $532 a year.[Link: www.businessweek.com...]

The $532 number can't possibly be right. How do you raise $700 Billion over 10 years getting only an extra $532 from a few million people per year?
[Link: money.cnn.com...]
Three economists surveyed endorsed the Obama administration's plan to extend the tax cuts only for the lower- and middle-income taxpayers, but allow it to go up on those in the top two brackets -- individuals making more than $200,000 a year or couples earning $250,000 or more. That limited increase in taxes would raise an estimated $700 billion over the next 10 years.

It wouldn't. To get to the $700B you need to add in the increase in taxes on those who make more than $800K, don't you? And is it not reasonable to assume that the average increase on that group, who make from $800K to infinity, might account for some serious coin?

OK, I see that as part of the problem. But the $532 is just a bracketing trick.
People making $200,000 will essentially be paying no extra taxes a year while those paying $500,000 will be paying many thousands. Because there are many more people making near $200,000 than those making near $500,000, the entire range gets dragged way down.
More details about higher earners here.
[Link: www.cbsnews.com...]
Those making between $500,000 and one million will pay about $10,000 more per year while those over one million will pay around $100,000 more.

That is reasonable; my point in posting the Business Week $532 average increase was that I think there is some more elasticity in our ability to pay taxes than some of the outrage over the tax-cuts phaseout suggests.
Looking at the Forbes 'Tax Misery & Reform' index indicates that the relationship in some countries (look at Germany, for example) between taxation and a vigorous economy is also more complex than a simple 'low taxes = good business.'

You can get Mexican Coca-Cola here in Austin. Also Dublin, Texas, Dr. Pepper. Both are made with real sugar. The difference is profound.
Up here, they make and market "Pepsi Throwback", "Mountain Dew Throwback", etc. I've been drinking the Pepsi and don't really taste a difference, but when given a choice, I'll take it over the "high fructose corn syrup" that I know is polluting my body even worse than the drink with sugar.
