The GOP Pledge to America and the Religious Right

Politics • Views: 3,471

I had to laugh at this CBS News headline about the GOP’s new “Pledge to America” (hmm, sounds vaguely reminiscent of something): Are Social Conservatives Losing Their Voice in the GOP?

I laughed because to me, the absence of a lot of social conservative language in this document looks like a last ditch effort, by the slowly vanishing Old Guard of the Grand Old Party, to focus on substantive issues instead of religious right extremism. But the reality is that in state after state, the social conservative far right Tea Party candidates are knocking down the GOP fat cats, no matter how long they’ve been in office.

The “Pledge to America” is an attempt to pretend the takeover isn’t really happening.

The GOP’s resistance to making the extremist social agenda of the religious right a central focus is one of the main reasons the Tea Party movement exists; there’s been a very strong fundamentalist religious component to it, right from the beginning. A prime motivator for teabaggers is their contempt for the establishment Republican Party, and the “Pledge to America” won’t change that.

And Tea Party astroturfer Dick Armey has promised that if they take control of Congress, social issues are coming to the forefront in a big way.

Social conservatives aren’t “losing their voice” — in fact, it’s louder than ever. But the GOP is wearing earplugs.

The Pledge is a last gasp by the traditional GOP to remain relevant in their own party and the Tea Baggers and Socons are already busy attacking them for ignoring their agenda.

The “Pledge to America” is an attempt to pretend the takeover isn’t really happening.

At the very least.

It is very disingenuous document, full of partial truths.

And, it contains the magic word “Creator” near the beginning, which shows that all the right codewords are embedded.

All the wingnut blogs seem pretty universally unimpressed with the new GOP pledge. I doubt it has much appeal to moderates to it seems like it was probably a big waste of time.

This is the Religious Right’s revenge on the party for Ronald Reagan ditching them as soon as Nancy’s astrologer told her the stars were propitious.

They have been waiting for decades, getting their people into key positions in government, media and politics, and now they are making their move to gain control over a major political party.

And it looks like they are succeeding

Conservatives split on GOP’s new ‘Pledge To America,’ unveiled by House Republicans

Conservative blogger Erick Erickson called the pledge the “most ridiculous thing to come out of Washington since George McClellan.”

Erickson blasted the document for not providing specific, long-term solutions.

“Yes, yes, it is full of mom-tested, kid-approved pablum that will make certain hearts on the right sing in solidarity,” he wrote on his blog, Redstate.com. “But like a diet full of sugar, it will actually do nothing but keep making Washington fatter before we crash from the sugar high.”

The pledge gathers familiar talking points for Republicans, such as cutting taxes and slashing government spending. It comes at a time when the GOP is gearing up for the midterm elections and hoping to gain majorities in Congress.

And from Hot Air, who I won’t link to;

“Tea Partiers — activists and candidates alike — will not be interested in them. They may reject them on principle. They may reject them on the idea that the GOP leaders’ concerns are based on the Pledge as a campaign document, when it should be seen more as a governing document. They can point to the Contract as an example, or even note that voters did not notice or care that Obama ran on a left-wing platform, because they were fed up with the failures (real and imagined) of the Bush43 Republicans.”

But don’t you worry, the Young Guns are coming to town! And they got themselves some new fangled ideas! Like, um, cutting the deficit though tax cuts! Growing the economy through tax cuts! Healthcare for everyone through tax cuts! Wipe the tears of Jesus through tax cuts! Build roads with tax cuts! Put out house fires with tax cuts! Educate the children with tax cuts! Safe streets with tax cuts! Cure homelessness with tax cuts! Cure cancer with tax cuts! Alleviate erectile disfunction with tax cuts! Put pedophiles in jsial with tax cuts! It is an article of conservative doctrine that tax cuts will be reinvested in the economy and create more jobs and growth.

It is an article of doctrine that government regulation and interference in industry hinders growth.

There is no arguing with this doctrine, even in the light of the financial collapse which was brought about by a lack of regulation of the financial industry, and which required a government bailout to keep it from wrecking the entire nation’s economy

31 AJStrata  Thu, Sep 23, 2010 2:25:19pm

Charles,

There is a battle in the GOP between social cons and fiscal/libertarian cons - but I think you over estimate the social cons ascension. They look to me to be seriously descending in power. I have been to tea party events and it is a constitutional, small government movement.

yes, those classic loons like Hannity and Ingraham and Malkin are trying to take control of th movement - but it is not working. The outcry from the far right is actually good to see, since it identifies those who are the far right mirror image of the far left.

If your ‘theory’ was right then O’Donnell would be winning - she is not. Of all the candidates she is the one and only sinking. Also, to take control of the GOP the party needs to win. They are not winning. Incumbents are losing (for good reason).

You can pretend along with Hannity the Tea Party is a social con movement - but it isn’t. Which is why The Pledge is much more a libertarian approach and not the usual GOP-Con stuff:

Does the new Manifesto mention Death Panels? Since The Sarah reignited that claim today by typing this:

And remember when the Obama administration said they would not be “rationing care” in the future? That ol’ “death panels” thing I wrote about last year? That was before Obamacare was passed. Once it passed, they admitted there was going to be rationing after all. There has to be. The reality of Obamacare is that it enshrines what the New York Times called “The Power of No” – the government’s power to say no to your request for treatment of the people you love. The fact that the president used a recess appointment to push through the nomination of Dr. Donald Berwick as head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services tells you all you need to know about this administration’s intentions. After all, Berwick is the man who said, “The decision is not whether we will ration care – the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.”

How can we trust the GOP if they don’t pledge to keep us from the death panels?

35 Kronocide  Thu, Sep 23, 2010 2:26:56pm

They’re desperate and grasping at what used to work. At least you can’t dish it by saying ‘The Pledge On America.’

Because there are vested interests who want to see no regulation at all, and they present a case that any governemtn interference is creeping socialism.

One could make the case that traffic lights are an unwarranted government infringement on our right of free travel.

And then remove the traffic lights. Things would work for a while, those with the biggest SUV’s would still get through the intesections, but at some point we would see gridlock, even ambulances and fire trucks would be able to get through, endangering public safety.

And then have get a traffic cop out to sort out traffic.

That is a metaphor for what happened to America’s financial industries. We took out the traffic lights, and then Obama had to come out an play traffic cop.

re: #31 AJStrata

From your blog post:

The pledge (full text here) looks to be a good balance of where to redirect our collective focus. This collective focus has been precisely scoped to not go outside common ground where consensus cannot be won with the broad middle of America. Its stays out of the fringes. But more than that, the pledge’s underlying premise is small, nonintrusive government. That libertarian streak throughout is why it holds together.

How do you square that with their stated desire to make the Hyde Amendment law? And what the hell is a “collective focus”?

re: #31 AJStrata

So far, anti-incumbent fever has been mostly limited to Republican incumbents…I think the GOP didn’t think it was important to have the media say “anti-Democratic-incumbent fever” every time they opened their mouths, and are now regretting it.

As far as teabaggers go, O’Donnell is a serial candidate, and one that the people of Delaware have rejected twice before, and will again. Just because 2% of Republicans showed up at the polls and voted for her in the primary doesn’t mean she’ll win the general. Same goes for Angle in Nevada (70,000 votes out of 1 million registered Republicans), and Buck in Utah (3500 votes in a delegate meeting). Even Miller in Alaska only won by 2000 votes, and more people are expected to vote in the general.

But the GOP is kissing the asses of these nutters, which means that they do, in fact, support them and their insane views.

Good luck with that.

We have talked about the “civil war” in the GOP here. The Pledge looks like the battle lines as seen by the old guard. Who wins this fight remains to be seen. I hope the small gov/fisc cons can find a home, and real traction. Ditch the socons.

Except the Pledge is nothing but recycled bullet points from the past and reworded Tea Party Slogans and the Evangelicals aren’t jumping on board.

Hello. My name is John Doe and I am the Republican Senatorial candidate for the great state of North Dakota. On science, my position regarding evolution is that intelligent design and creationism is no science but a religious belief and should not be taught in science class. Evolution must be taught as the accepted science alongside the great works of Darwin. So come November flip that lever for this Republican and help keep science and Darwin in science class and creationism in the churches and homes were they belong.

America is an idea – an idea that free people can govern themselves, that government’s powers are derived from the consent of the governed, that each of us is endowed by their Creator with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Rights to life. Sort of reminds me of something: right-to-life.

If your ‘theory’ was right then O’Donnell would be winning - she is not.

She won the primary. That was the Republican intramural contest. I haven’t seen anyone here say that her views or the views of the Tea Party movement will prove to be persuasive to the electorate as a whole. In fact, the usual reaction is that the conventional Republican candidate is the more electable one, and that the GOP primary voters do the Democratic Party a favor by choosing the TP candidate. That has certainly been the consensus regarding Delaware and Nevada.

But that doesn’t mean the Tea Party isn’t winning the fight for the soul of the Republican Party. It looks to me like they are. If an obvious nut-job like O’Donnell can win, what else are we to think?

Nice comparison of the GOP Pledge to repeal health care reform and the Affordable Care Act

So, basically, the Republicans just want to do what the Democrats did, but they were to stubborn to support the first time, so they can get the credit for it. Idiots. They could have voted yes the first time around and campaigned on what they did for people rather than trying to shoot down the ideas they’re pushing.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. Yeah I think the idea that social conservatives are losing their voice in the GOP is silly as well. See the Montana GOP actually proposing criminalizing homosexuality or the Palin standard candidates who are not just anti abortion but against abortion in every instance, or other states trying to mirror Arizona’s immigration law. Yes these candidates may be making noise out of their economic stances than they have in the past but it seems to me that the GOP has embraced more socially conservative candidates than they have in the past.

Was hoping to see a post about the deranged troofer comments from the Iranian president at the UN overnight.

There used to be a really good site that did a lot of good work shining a light on the that sort of thing.

It also used to expose other useful idiots.

You know Hamas poisoning the minds of kids with their TV shows, Cindy Sheehan being Cindy Sheehan, Code Pink, the terrorist Ayers suckling at the public teat while trampling on your flag, raving posts at Daily Kos and Huffington Post, DNC and GOP troofers, the extreme left crazies that would pop up on the Obama for President web site, CAIR shilling for Islamofacism funded by a misogynist regime, etc.etc.

I don’t know what happened to it.

It came to its senses and started dealing with reality.

I lament the good ol days when we could make fun of her special case of ass hattery. This difference is that Sheehan and Co really were fringe with an occasional smattering of idiocy from one of the few kooky leftist CongressCritters, of which I could count on one hand. Serious concern, no.

Today we have the level of crazy but the amount of people and levels of power are much greater. Though of differing nuances O’Donnell is in the realm of Sheehan idiocy, and she’s running for a munch more powerful office than Kucinich. There’s more like her, on a much larger scale, feeding off simple populist angst fed by racism and religious fervor. I keep hoping it will crest and boil over but it is like the Energizer bunny, it just keeps going.

I wish we could get back to the simple days of ridiculing Sheehan, Luap, and Kucinich, even my fave Code Pink. Today’s right lerching asshattery is much more concerning to me as a conservative.

re: #12 elizajane

Focus on substantive issues facing America?

You mean like the pledge to cut spending “with commonsense exceptions for seniors and soldiers”? Like no cutting entitlements and defense spending?

Oh, we’re going to balance the budget by getting rid of NPR and the NEH, right?

You can’t balance the budget by cutting military spending while still fighting. You’ll just end up paying less for ammo but more on funerals. If there is to be a military spending cut, it has to come in connection with a scaling back of foreign policy objectives.

You can make some real headway by cutting the growth in entitlements for seniors. The current formula adjusts both for inflation and for overall economic growth, with the idea being that seniors would hold their own in relative terms compared to today’s workers. But if we limit ourselves to preserving their access to a certain modest basket of goods and services, by providing however much money that takes once inflation is factored in, we can save a lot.

Seniors have reduced earning power, true, but they’ve had all those years to build up savings. Young people today have it rougher than seniors, and there’s no escaping the reality that somebody won’t get something they’d like from the government.

Another group that has to take a hit is public unionized workers. They’ve got more job security, more pay, and less in the way of skills than comparable private sector workers. Economic justice does not consist in further enriching the secure and powerful.

Those with high incomes are going to have to pay more taxes. The social contract can stand the tension if they know that their taxes are going to paying down the deficit, rather than just running up a metaphorical bar tab for binge spending on a scale that no amount of taxes could actually pay it off.

Lots of pain has to be faced and got through. Avoiding it altogether just isn’t in the cards.

Oh, and AGW is another instance of the same story. We gotta do something, and the longer we wait, the tougher the job gets.

Exactly what the author of this GOP thingy said today on NPR ATC. Repeal it all, then we’ll RE-PASS the items that the Republican’s put forth.

They never claimed this items, it was the Dems reminding them that they were their ideas, but they never claimed them. (party of no)

“We will repeal the health care and then we will replace it,” McCarthy later told NPR’s Robert Siegel. “We say why don’t we do tort reform? That’s the No. 1 factor when it comes to the rising cost of health care.”

McCarthy et al = joke

That’s right. It’s your money and if you’re middle-aged currently, you may not even end up with that!

I’ve watched my elderly relatives suffer through illness. Some were wealthy, some were not. Some were middle class who lost everything either through divorce, widow(ed) or lost businesses. Some had to rely on social security and family help alone.

My mother had to go back to work at 70 and worked until 74. Actually, she worked for an ombudsman who would get grants for the elderly for things like fixing plumbing, bad roofs. You pay off your house after 30 years, and then you have a whole new set of expensive problems.

I live to put money to my retirement. It really freaks me out.

True that. However, I can not overstate the importance of getting rid of them. From a climate standpoint, the clock is seriously starting to tick. We simply do not have another two or four or six years to waste. It is not that I see the Dems rushing in to save the day, but at the very least, their minds do not start off closed to the science in general.

Honestly, if the GOP were all over the science and taking action for fossil fuel independence, this would not be an issue. This should not be a partisan issue any more than if the Earth is not flat. Unfortunately though, we are dealing with a party of semi-literate morons.
