Christine O’Donnell Falsely Claims to Have Studied at Oxford

Politics • Views: 10,650

The GOP’s anti-wanking, anti-evolution candidate in Delaware, Christine O’Donnell, has been caught in another “embellishment” of her education record; her bio claims she attended the University of Oxford, but as Greg Sargent details, the truth is she attended one course from an organization called the Phoenix Institute, that rented space at Oxford.

Chris Fletcher, who oversaw the Institute’s 2001 Oxford Summer Programme, which included the course O’Donnell took, tells me the course was not overseen by Oxford.

“We never represented it as a course run by Oxford University,” Fletcher, who is now an assistant professor of religious studies at Benedictine University in Illinois, told me. Fletcher said the only connection to Oxford is that they rented space there and organized some lectures with “guest lecturers from Oxford and Cambridge” as well as from other institutions.

“It wasn’t an official course of Oxford University,” Fletcher said. “It wasn’t sponsored by Oxford University. We rented the space.”

“It was our curriculum, and we did the grades,” Fletcher continued. Fletcher’s conclusion about O’Donnell’s Oxford claim: “It’s misleading.”

I used the Bobst Library at NYU for my master's thesis and other research, so I guess that makes me a NYU grad. Oh, and I once competed at Columbia Law, so I'm an Ivy Grad too. /

What a nitwit to exaggerate on her CV in that fashion as if no one would ever find out? If she lies about the easy stuff - and easily fact-checked, what does that say about her character and judgment in general? Nothing good, that's for sure.

The Phoenix Institute is searching for reality:

The Phoenix Institute is an educational organization that concerns itself with the question "What is it to be human?" We examine mankind in all its essential components -intellectual, psychological, spiritual- supplementing and extending the explorations which our students have already made during their years of undergraduate and post-graduate study.

Tracing the course of Classical and Judeo-Christian thought, we seek truth by searching for the knowledge of reality and the realization of the good. Today, more than ever, the world needs men and women willing to undertake this kind of adventure. Despite remarkable advances in science, technology, and economics, the world suffers disorder at every level of society because of an absence of order in the lives of individuals. The Phoenix Institute exists to help mankind recover from this disorder. We do not believe that we offer the only way, but we offer one way, a very good way.

Wonder how many people would have automatically accepted her claim if the Phoenix guy hadn't been honest?

On a related note, I attended Augusta College right before they came under the State University system. Our graduation however, came right after. Even though the school was still listed as AC, our diplomas say Augusta State University. Similarly, I attended Eastern New Mexico University Clovis when they still fell under ENMU. The school foolishly decided to go it alone and is now Clovis Community College. My class was the last to graduate as ENMU, Clovis. So I benefited twice. Proves there's less in a name than people think.

GOP blocks legislation to encourage companies to bring US jobs back from overseas

Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked a Democratic plan to encourage companies to bring jobs back from overseas, as a united GOP caucus voted against a motion to debate the measure on the Senate floor.

The motion failed 53 to 45.

The legislation would have raised taxes on corporations that shift operations overseas, costing U.S. jobs. It also would have awarded companies that bring jobs back from abroad by offering a two-year hiatus from payroll taxes for those positions.

Same thing happened to me. Though the Canadian system (in some provinces) is a bit different and one can do to years of university at a 'college' (sometimes the whole 4 years) one of the schools I attended was called a college then. Now it's been upgraded to a university. Even though there really isn't any difference in the school for people who don't know any better having "university' on my record just sounds better now.

Augusta College was always a four year institution. They had three reasons for going under the State School banner, money, name recognition, and problems with accreditation due to a change in required classes. It gets expensive to add classes few people will take just to meet accreditation requirements. The State School System meant as long as a sister school had the class available and accepted our students, our school didn't have to offer it. In the end, it's all about the money really.

"An effective communicator, Christine is known for her skill in winning over even those who disagree with her most. Liberal Bill Maher stated, “I don’t know how many times you’ve been here but it’s always a good show when you’re on.”

re: #66 BongCrodny

The party of "personal responsibility" sure seems to favor people who aren't particularly responsible.

Some folks seem to favor more of a Darwinian approach to 'personal responsibility'. Survival of the fittest identifies the fittest only as those who survive. If you survive, you're, ergo, fit.

A certain frame of mind identifies a person as 'personally responsible' if they get away with whatever the hell they did, and prosper. So, if you just go broke, you have to take 'responsibility' for having done so. If you lie, cheat and steal, but get away with it, you don't ever have to take responsibility. Responsibility, in this crowd's mind, consists of losing.

Allow me to contribute 96 photos of Katy Perry.

Yes, she has breasts. Point made.

What I find interesting is that she seems far more attractive when she smiles or comes close to smiling. There's something about women who can't or won't smile that's an incredible turn-off for me.

GOP blocks legislation to encourage companies to bring US jobs back from overseas

Only today in America do helpful, pro American bills FAIL even with majority votes in favor...and the minority party blocking them will not be called out for fucking over hard working Americans.

We had a good run, gang. The American dream of getting ahead with hard work and virtuous ethics was a beacon to the world. Them days are over, and the grifters, criminals and nihilist poltroons of our society are now running the show.

It also would have awarded companies that bring jobs back from abroad by offering a two-year hiatus from payroll taxes for those positions.

Why are the Republicans against lowering taxes?

re: #90 SanFranciscoZionist

Some folks seem to favor more of a Darwinian approach to 'personal responsibility'. Survival of the fittest identifies the fittest only as those who survive. If you survive, you're, ergo, fit.

A certain frame of mind identifies a person as 'personally responsible' if they get away with whatever the hell they did, and prosper. So, if you just go broke, you have to take 'responsibility' for having done so. If you lie, cheat and steal, but get away with it, you don't ever have to take responsibility. Responsibility, in this crowd's mind, consists of losing.

They have theirs. They have yours. The primary interest of both parties is gaining and retaining power. With I suspect maintaining and growing their contribution totals a very close second. (With the two also being related since anyone can see that contributions successfully buy access and influence.)

MBF aside, the obstructionism has reached dysfunctional levels.

Only if you misunderestimate the Grant administration.

The American dream of getting ahead with hard work was not affected by the ineptitude of grant (nor harding, Nixon etc).

It has been badly damaged by the current "Masters Of The Universe" who own our government and virtually all meaningful financial power in this country.

The rigged game of American wealth, power and social influence has been shown for what it is, and most people now know that getting a legacy entry at Yale, cheating, breaking federal laws and raping the investments of millions of Americans is how you get ahead.

Hard work and playing by the rules is for chumps.

After about 4 topics in 2 days at Michelle Malkin's site about what a triumph it was that O'Donnell won the primary, and how the naysayers were bitter losers, there has not been a single word about her.

Can't help but wonder if it has something to do with every single item that gets revealed about her just adding to the reasons the naysayers were right.

Too close to me for comfort. Anyway, I doubt that she would fit in well at Miami University (aka "J Crew U" and "Preppie Central"), where no less than three sororities have been suspended this year alone for out-of-control partying.

136 unsavoryagent  Wed, Sep 29, 2010 10:20:36am

O'Donnell acknowledges she studied at Phoenix Institute, not Oxford, but denies she ever established any such LinkedIn profile and calls for it to be taken down:

"There have been reports that I have released false information on a LinkedIn profile under my name. This is categorically untrue. I never established a LinkedIn profile, or authorized anyone to do so on my behalf. I have always been clear about my educational background. I completed undergraduate work at Fairleigh Dickenson University. After my undergraduate work, I completed a summer program run by the Phoenix Institute, at the Institute's Oxford University location. The Institute runs programs around the world at various universities, and participants study issues of human dignity. I also completed a Lincoln Fellowship at the Claremont Institute in Claremont, CA. We would encourage LinkedIn to remove this profile."
