"living within our means"...thank you, Jerry...let's hear Meg say that...for that matter, let's hear her say "I love California" or "I love the California University program"...she won't, because she can't.

People at UC aren't children, Meg...they're adults. Nice job insulting young voters.

Not a fan of Meg. My little inner voice says turn tail and run. As bad as Jerry may be, he isn't Meg, and doesn't give me that panicky feeling I've just been duped by a liar in sheep's clothing. I like my liars bold-faced. They're more transparent.

One thing about the questioning panel - they were not put there by Fox News.

Can or will Jerry carry his hard core fiscal conservatives promises through the legislature?

I really doubt he can. They are fighting over the opportunity to go down just like Arnie. Rollover then fade away.

Nah, Whitman would at least go down swinging. And her willingness to fight it out would at least give her a chance.

I hate to tell you this but as a state worker I've been denied my cost of living increase for 11 years in a row, we've had our benefits cut, furloughed for almost 2 years and are currently fighting off a 10 percent pay cut.

All this while outsourced projects failed left and right wasting millions of tax payer dollars on jobs that state workers could do themselves. Personally as a regular middle class guy I am extremely thankful that SEIU 1000 is out there fighting to at least stem the tide.

Unlikely. There are wage laws that prevent employers from stiffing their employees. Those laws would still be there. But the SEIU has become serious problem. As it is a private sector union, it clearly should exist. But it needs sound reform and to have its influence cut back.

It may sound that way but if, for a minute, you imagine how bad it would be if all the attacks on us succeeded it would resemble the following image:

A programmer making 10 dollars an hour with no benefits, no retirement, no pension and no health care working 5 days a week and being paid for 3.

I am not just a fair share union contributor, I'm a full member and pay extra gladly. I'll say it again, I'm extremely thankful for SEIU 1000.

They can get programmers in China to work for a lot less than $10 an hour.
California's ailing $34 million student database project is a year behind

California's statewide data system tracking student information was to be fully functioning by now. But CalPADS – the state's $34 million student database project – is a year behind schedule.
...
In December, an assessment by Folsom's Sabot Technologies – contracted by the state – called for an immediate shutdown of the system to fix abnormalities. It "discovered significant issues with the system and project, representing a threat to the success of CalPADS," according to the report.

It said IBM, which is being paid $13.9 million to develop CalPADS, had understaffed the project, and that the team wasn't experienced enough.
Unlikely. There are wage laws that prevent employers from stiffing their employees. Those laws would still be there. But the SEIU has become serious problem. As it is a private sector union, it clearly should exist. But it needs sound reform and to have its influence cut back.

You don't say WHY it's a problem or what "influence" they have that should be cut back. Corporations can now spend unlimited amounts of money.. is it your assertion that unions have the same or even more influence?

Please believe is slang for "I agree with you"... sorry. Just giving an example. That project, and CDE projects are overseen by the program office or unit who owns the project. Think of a unit from 5 to 30 people. The contract approval process is actually grueling but when it comes to oversight it's normally ONE contract monitor's job to oversee the entire contract and to ensure that the work is done, etc, etc.

Additionally a "contract monitor" is not a job title, it's a role you do "on the side" in addition to your other duties. Normally it's a unit manager who also had to run their entire unit, handle all personnel issues and oversee every other project that the team works on.

This is the case regardless of the size of the contract. 10k or 10 million. Personally I think that it's an oversight model that makes it next to impossible to succeed in performing thorough and timely oversight.

Oh, geez.

We do have full-time monitors of contracts; plus someone in the agency who also monitors and reports. So we don't have THAT kind of a problem, as this turned out to be.

We don't even really have contracts being given to pols friends/families so much - however, the contracts eat up a LOT of money, usually for jobs that are peripheral to the state's mission, and could be cut and save a lot of $ before the impact hits actual employees trying to do the work.

And for Dark Falcon - in some jurisdictions, a government employee can be furloughed for a period of time, or a day or two a week; yet STILL be called in to work when it's a critical job, and then get reimbursed with "comp time" rather than money. In the long run, it could work out well, because you might take that time when you're making more money than you're making now, plus you save your other leave. But in the short-term - it doesn't get today's mortgage paid.

Some people are getting tired of watching the state self destruct in wasteful spending. I can understand why someone would run. They feel they might make a difference and help make their state much better.

Oh well. She was way too young for me and I don't need the aggravation anyways. Fucking vegetarians.

Heh. The story might have been true. Although, why she didn't just knock on your door and talk to you instead of raiding your fig tree . . .

I have to say, though, a fig tree produces a LOT more figs than one person can reasonably eat. You ought to just collect them and set them out and tell folks to help themselves. Maybe someone lovely and a bit older will stop by.

no you don't need large scale arrests, a very small percentage of the population commits the majority of crimes. you just need to stop releasing the same people over & over...

The question is Palin's age, 19. She could only legally be in Rumrunners Old Towne Bar and Grill last Friday if accompanied by a parent, spouse or legal guardian over 21. State law also would allow her to be there if it's been designated as a bona fide restaurant, and she was there only to eat. [...]

Your kids will meditate in school
California über alles!
California über alles!
Zen Fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the Master Race
And always wear the Happy Face
Close your eyes can't happen here
Your Big Bro on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay!
Mellow out of you will pay!
California über alles!
California über alles!

Dukakis shared his strategy for midterm elections at the White House

Former Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis, the failed 1988 presidential nominee, recently visited the White House and delivered his strategy for the midterm elections: pound key precincts across the country with the message that Republicans want to implement the same policies that led to the Great Recession.

Don't know if this link was posted earlier, but Mediate ran an article this afternoon with this lead in paragraph:

The calendar may say the summer’s over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all try to hold on to those lovely warm months. In Los Angeles, for instance, people are pretending it’s still July by suffering through a terrible heat wave. Meanwhile, the guests on Money Rocks are helping out by continuing to shriek at each other over ...

Heh, "shriek" - you've got to know who is the subject. They've got the Fox (still the favorite "news" channel for some around here, it appears) video of the entire segment - more stupid than one could imagine:

So, I'm at the gym earlier this evening, watching Fox news while on the treadmill, and they are doing a report on North Korea and Little Kim's possible successor, his son Kim Jong-un.

So Fox is going all "scare" mode, pointing out that Kim Jong-un has been being groomed for only 2 years for the job as dictator and commander of the military, and soon he may have his finger on their nuclear arsenal.

So what? Our commander in chief Obama was only groomed for a few years and he doesn't have any more experience in running a country or commanding a military than Kim Jong-un... heck... as far as I see it... this evens thing out between North Korea and us.

AHEM... THE LAST REAL JOKE (I THINK) I TOLD MY MOTHER.

"There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making
biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig.

Well, whatcha gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears.

Come on, man," the biker says, "I didn't think you'd CRY. I can't stand to
see a grown man crying.

"This is the worst day of my life," I say. "I'm a complete failure. I was
late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found
my car had been stolen and I don't have any insurance. I left my wallet in the
cab I took home. I found my old lady in bed with the gardener, and then my dog
bit me."

"So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all. I buy a
drink; I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the arsenic dissolve. Then some
jack-ass shows up and drinks the whole thing! But enough about me, how's your
day going?""

I knew she was dying, it was obvious.
It was still physically painful when it happened. I hurt from my neck all the way down to my toes.
And there are still moments I wish I could call her.

FBV - You have some moments with your mom, please cherish them. There was a lot going on at the time my mom was sick - I had a stupid drug-addicted, drug-addled brother to deal with, and during those 14 days, my dad fell and broke his hip and had surgery. It was all very distracting. I wish I'd had some quiet time - if you have it, cherish it.

All of us here with our sad stories. I didn't mean to go off on that tangent. I'm still angry with the brother; and then Dad died 4 months later, that was actually a bit of a blessing, he had some sort of dementia. But Mom - I thought she'd outlive Dad, and then she and I could do some things I wanted to do with her, that she couldn't do while taking care of Dad. Ah, hell.

Yup. For the illegals here. A father was killed a couple years back by an illegal immigrant and later it was discovered that the SFPD have their hands tied - apparently they're not supposed to report illegals to ICE. Lovely, huh? Can thank the cretins on the SF Board of Sups for that one.
