Charlie Crist’s Anti-Vaccination Backer Wants Your Sealed Immunization Records

Wingnuts • Views: 7,381

The weirdest story of the day comes from Florida (where else?), where one of Gov. Charlie Crist’s biggest financial backers is trying to use his political pull to gain access to scores of the state’s sealed immunization records — records that include Social Security numbers and home addresses.

The guy who’s demanding these records is an anti-vaccination kook, notorious for promoting a very expensive quack treatment for autism that involves injections of Lupron, a “chemical castration” drug, and his reason for wanting the records is to conduct “research” to prove that vaccines cause autism.

Good grief.

Penn Bullock and Brandon K. Thorp have the full whacked-out story at the Miami New Times: Crist backer Gary Kompothecras bullies Florida health officials.

“This madness has got to stop. No more double talk. This should be a fairly straightforward study. I feel that there are hidden agendas going on and I will not stand by [and] let it continue!! I will not wait any longer,” reads an email dated August 6 from Dr. Gary Kompothecras to Dr. Julia Gill, director of the Florida Department of Health’s (DOH) Division of Disease Control.

Coming from anyone else, the blustery email threat might be easily dismissed. But “Dr. Gary,” as Kompothecras is known, is the self-styled “Rainmaker,” a Sarasota chiropractor who has raised more than $1 million over the years for Senate candidate and soon-to-be ex-governor Charlie Crist.

So it’s bound to turn heads when the man known to occasionally lend his private jet to the governor uses his political clout to try to bully Florida health officials into turning over scores of the state’s sealed immunization records. Especially when they’re for a father-son team, Dr. Mark and David Geier, infamous for injecting autistic children with Lupron, a drug used to chemically castrate prostate cancer patients and pedophiles.

“I will be speaking to the governor’s office next week,” Kompothecras, who has served on the Governor’s Task Force on Autism Spectrum Disorders since 2008, wrote in his email. “I will even fly up to Tallahassee to sit down with the governors’ chief of staff and explain in detail the railroad we have been on.” Then he signed off with a demand and a threat: “I want a clear, precise time line now!! Govern yourselves accordingly.”

Kompothecras — founder of the lawyer referral service 1-800-ASK-GARY and a leading light in the “anti-vax” movement, which promotes the long-discredited theory that vaccines cause autism — copied Crist’s chief of staff, Shane Strum; the DOH’s chief of staff, Robert Siedlecki; and other DOH officials on the email.

A well-placed source within Florida government, who asked to remain anonymous, claims the governor’s office has been putting “political pressure” on the DOH to submit to the Geiers’ demands. Turning over the sealed immunization records, the source says, would be “reckless, careless, shortsighted, and politically motivated.”

Good grief, yes. Plus, social security numbers are private.

HIPAA laws are so strong, my insurance company, which pays secondary for my husband (after his pays), wouldn’t even tell me if they had paid a claim for a medical procedure he had done that I knew all about to begin with.

They can’t possibly release these records, without everybody whose record is being released giving their consent. Sheesh.

Ace of Spades: “I am guessing that by ‘seduce’ [O’Keefe] was joking.” If not, O’Keefe’s actions were “weird.” In a post dated September 29, blogger Ace of Spades wrote, “I am guessing that by ‘seduce’ he was joking. She wanted the story ‘James O’Keefe is a weirdo’ so he was going to deliver that, playing a sexual deviant, let her run her story, and then reveal it was all a prank.” The post concluded: “If it turns out he did really mean to seduce her, well, that’s weird, and I’ll eat my words But I think he just meant to be silly.

Confederate Yankee: “James O’Keefe’s latest stunt is very creepy.” In a September 29 post to his Twitter account conservative blogger “Confederate Yankee” Bob Owens, wrote: “FWIW, yeah, I think James O’Keefe’s latest stunt is very creepy. It solidifies my opinion that his real concern is self-promotion.”

He’s not even an MD, he’s a chiropractor.

SUIT SAYS LAW FIRM, CLINIC TRADE REFERRALS

By Andrew Wolfson

Injured when another car struck hers in June 2008, Sharon Langford of Louisville went to see the law firm of Winters Yonker & Rousselle.

She said the firm told her that her health insurance wouldn’t cover injuries suffered in car wrecks and that she should get all medical care at 1st Physician Rehabilitation Inc., a clinic on Crums Lane.

When Langford needed surgery, the firm flew her to another clinic in Florida.

She only discovered later, she said, that both clinics are owned by Gary Kompothecras, a chiropractor who also owns the heavily advertised referral service 1-800-ASK-GARY, which refers clients to Winters & Yonker, as the firm is now known, in Louisville and Florida.

In a suit filed last month against the law firm and Kompothecras’ Louisville clinic, Langford said the relationship between the two - and their alleged deception - deprived her of the right to treatment by her doctors and cost her money.

Sam Carl, one of her lawyers, said Winters & Yonker settled her accident case for $200,000, then paid itself $70,000 and the medical providers $64,518, leaving her the smallest share, $62,738. (The balance covered medical expenses before she hired the firm.)

Continues.

Mutual Referrals Between Law Firm and Medical Clinics Lead to Lawsuit

“The law firm, Winters & Yonker, has a habit of directing its personal injury plaintiff clients to a particular chain of medical clinics owned by Gary Kompothecras, a chiropractor who also runs 1-800-ASK-GARY, a “medical and lawyer referral service” operating in Florida.”

The deal allegedly works like this: The law firm steers its client to Kompothecras’ clinics, which don’t accept health insurance; the clinics get the first chunk of their charges from the personal injury coverage that is a mandatory part of auto insurance policies; then, the remainder of fees come right out of any settlement or verdict, guaranteed by a “letter of protection” executed by the law firm.

I imagine the maid will be blamed as an illegal more than Whitman for hiring her in the first place by the nutters. What we should do is make it easier to immigrate legally and from what I understand this is something that has happened under Obama’s presidency. We know people want to come here and why. We should encourage immigration not look down on it.

How is the Obama administration making immigration any easier?

As for the Whitman thing, this seems like a massive ‘she said, she said’ situation.

As best I can tell, Whitman’s version is that she hired the woman with paperwork in order, and fired her when she learned she wasn’t legally able to work.

Allred’s version is that she knew the woman was illegal, exploited her with that knowledge in mind, and then canned her when her presence became politically risky.

I’ll keep watchin’ the news.

I wasn’t going to vote for her anyway, so this doesn’t much affect me.

I gave up trying to figure them out. Nothing you can do. Part of the reason they do this is because they think it can intimidate us or something. Best thing to do is ignore them and let them live out their little fantasies.

re: #75 SanFranciscoZionist

How is the Obama administration making immigration any easier?

That might be an overstatement, but they are making bigger cracks for people to fall through so they can stay:

A leaked internal memo from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that surfaced during the summer reveals a suggestion to provide relief to two groups of illegal immigrants facing deportation: people brought here as children who would qualify for the DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act, and people who have been living here continuously since 1996. The year is a move that would bump up the qualifying date from Jan. 1, 1972, in a section of immigration law.

“Rather than making deferred action widely available to hundreds of thousands and as a non-legislative version of ‘amnesty,’ USCIS could tailor the use of this discretionary option for particular groups,” the memo said.
