Yeah, if illegal aliens get to collect from the Social Security they paid into, even while they were here illegally, Harry Reid is taking that away from YOU. And if an illegal alien was brought here as an infant, and graduates from school at the top of her class, and she were to get in-state tuition rates, Harry Reid is taking that away from YOU.

4 Gus  Wed, Oct 6, 2010 11:27:51am

Reid's counter ad:

TV Ad: "400 Miles"

The bit about Social Security is an outright fabrication considering that Reid wrote a resolution opposing SS benefits for illegal aliens:

S.RES.551

Title: A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that illegal immigrants should not receive Social Security benefits and that this prohibition should be strictly enforced.

Sponsor: Sen Reid, Harry [NV] (introduced 8/3/2006) Cosponsors (11)
Latest Major Action: 8/3/2006 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Referred to the Committee on Finance.

Nice choice of a picture of illegals, she just left out the tattoos and gang colors. Why not use a housekeeper, migrate field worker or construction worker, not all illegal emigrants are young toughs.

The ad was bit too "Willie Horton"for my taste.

6 Sionainn  Wed, Oct 6, 2010 11:29:07am

Most of the construction workers in Las Vegas aren't white.

I guess she was still negotiating to use clips of Danny Trejo in the ad.

8 Sol Berdinowitz  Wed, Oct 6, 2010 11:30:05am

"Even for the time they were here" - and paying into the Social Security system. She sorta left out that last nuance.

Scary thing is that this approach shows every chance of turning things around for Angle and helping get this lady elected.

9 3eff Jeff  Wed, Oct 6, 2010 11:30:15am

I like the shot of the angry Mexican gangsters getting college tuition. Because everyone who looks like that must be an illegal immigrant. Or a criminal.

If there is anything I've learned living in Oakland and growing up in the 1990s, is that it's just clothing. They're just folks, and that's just normal style these days.

If the image scares you, come visit Oakland. A well-to-do middle aged lady in a new convertible VW Eos drove by me last night blasting "Fuck The Police". It shouldn't be scary, because it's normal, American culture now.

The ad is also referring to the DREAM Act. While not called the DREAM Act at first one of the first pieces of legislation was introduced in the House as H.R.1918 by Rep Chris Cannon, (UT-3):

SUMMARY AS OF:
5/21/2001--Introduced.

Student Adjustment Act of 2001 - Amends the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to repeal the provision prohibiting an unlawful alien's eligibility for higher education benefits based on State residence unless a U.S. national is similarly eligible without regard to such State residence.

Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to direct the Attorney General to cancel the removal of, and adjust to permanent resident status, certain (inadmissible or deportable) alien middle or secondary students with qualifying years of U.S. residency. Makes such aliens eligible for Federal and State higher education assistance during the pendency of their application for cancellation of removal.

Chris Cannon happens to be a Republican.

The ad is also referring to the DREAM Act. While not called the DREAM Act at first one of the first pieces of legislation was introduced in the House as H.R.1918 by Rep Chris Cannon, (UT-3):

Chris Cannon happens to be a Republican.

The other bill which was the birth of the DREAM Act was introduced by none other than Orrin Hatch of Utah as S.1291:

SUMMARY AS OF:
6/20/2002--Reported to Senate amended. (There is 1 other summary)

Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act or the DREAM Act - Amends the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to repeal the denial of an unlawful alien's eligibility for higher education benefits based on State residence unless a U.S. national is similarly eligible without regard to such State residence.

(Sec. 3) Authorizes the Attorney General to cancel the removal of, and adjust to permanent resident status, an alien who: (1) has attained the age of 12 prior to enactment of this Act; (2) files an application before reaching the age of 21; (3) has earned a high school or equivalent diploma; (4) has been physically present in the United States for at least five years immediately preceding the date of enactment of this Act (with certain exceptions); (5) is a person of good moral character; and (6) is not inadmissible or deportable under specified criminal or security grounds of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Authorizes the Attorney General to take similar steps with respect to an alien who: (1) would have met such requirements during the four-year period immediately preceding the enactment of this Act; and (2) is enrolled in, or has graduated from, an institution of higher education.

Directs the Attorney General to establish a procedure permitting an alien to apply for cancellation and adjustment without being placed in removal proceedings (in addition to cancellation and adjustment availability in removal proceedings). Provides for: (1) expedited application processing without additional fees; and (2) confidentiality of applicant information.

Prohibits the removal of an alien who has not yet received a high school diploma or equivalent but has a reasonable opportunity of meeting the requirements under this Act. Permits such an alien to work.

(Sec. 4) Directs the Attorney General to report annually on the number, status, and disposition of applications under this Act.

I don't need to inform anyone as to Hatch's political party affiliation.

Angle needs to do a little more research into Mr. Reid's political history... in 1993 he actually introduced a bill that had a provision to change the 14th amendment...

Immigration Stabilization Act of 1993.

"TITLE X—CITIZENSHIP 4 SEC. 1001. BASIS OF CITIZENSHIP CLARIFIED. In the exercise of its powers under section of the Fourteenth Article of Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the Congress has determined and hereby declares that any person born after the date of enactment of this title to a mother who is neither a citizen of the United States nor admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident, and which person is a national or citizen of another country of which either of his or her natural parents is a national or citizen, or is entitled upon application to become a national or citizen of such country, shall be considered as born subject to the jurisdiction of that foreign country and not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States within the meaning of section 1 of such Article and shall therefore not be a citizen of the United States or of any State solely by reason of physical presence within the United States at the moment of birth."

Birds of a feather?

21 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Wed, Oct 6, 2010 11:38:52am

I really don't see any way out of this other than a guest worker policy.

We tried amnesty, which did not work, and is unfair to people who try to do it the honest way.

We can't send them home, even if we had the political will.

At present, we have created a situation in which they are literally outlaws, in the classic sense of the word, outside the protection of the law, and prey to every vulture out there.

FLOOR STATEMENT: "INTRODUCTION OF THE DREAM ACT"

Statement of Senator Orrin G. Hatch
before the
United States Senate

On the Introduction of the “DREAM” Act
“Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act”

I believe the DREAM Act will live up to its name. It will allow these illegal immigrant children the opportunity to not only dream of the infinite possibilities that their futures may hold in the United States, but it will also afford them the opportunity to realize their dreams. With the passage of the DREAM Act, the United States stands to benefit enormously. Once these children become legal residents of this nation, they will prove to be motivated, hard-working, and educated contributors to our society. I am pleased and proud once again to work with Senator Durbin on this important legislation.

Thank you, Mr. President. I yield the floor.

A couple of years later?

Hatch, Bennett Say They’ll Vote ‘No’ on DREAM Act

Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) was an original sponsor of the DREAM Act, a bill to help some undocumented young people gain legal status through school or military service. In 2003, he referred to the deportation of students who grew up in the U.S. as a “tremendous loss to our society.” In 2007, he and fellow Utah Sen. Bob Bennett voted to add the act to the defense authorization bill — the same move Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is attempting now.

Plenty of people could argue that. It's not realistic to expect Steele to criticize O'Donnell even if she is a lunatic. His non-answer sounds more like feeble excuses.

The question wasn't if China wants to have "influence over the U.S. economy". The question was about O'Donnell's comment that China has "carefully thought out and strategic plan to take over America". There's a big difference between wanting to have influence over our economy and a strategic plan to TAKE OVER AMERICA!

On that note, both China and the USA are frequently attempting to influence each others economies. SOP.

That doesn't make sense. So you toss out a political loser by voting for another political loser? Elections have been going on in this country for over 200 years and it won't make one bit of difference. The end result would be that it would reward the Tea Party lunacy of Sharron Angle. So while you may win an effective victory against Reid you're rewarding fringe candidates.

More than that, it speaks volumes about the loss of confidence in the incumbent, when someone can come from nowhere, with no discernible previous qualifications, and little in the way of current ones, save that he or she is NOT the guy currently in the office, and have it turn into a horserace.

Even if Reid should prevail, he would have to wonder about what the hell happened to him that allowed an unknown to get so close to "his" seat.

Well, I can't influence how the people of Nevada vote. Whatever I wish for or would like is only wishful thinking and has no effect on the final outcome. On the other hand 6 years is a long time for the state of Nevada to watch their federal funding dry up with a Senator that will sit at #100 in Senate seniority.

Long-time lizards may recall that I was once a fierce political partisan, and would slug it out relentlessly here (and, sadly, elsewhere) over ideology and policy and such-like.

Tow things have caused me to mend my ways, and both of them are philosophical.

1) Confucius says that an exemplary person does not plan the policies of an office he does not hold. It took years before I got what he was driving at, and I'm sure I'm still just starting to grasp it; and

2) A couplet from Samuel Johnson:
How small, of all that human hearts endure,
That part which laws or kings can cause or cure!

Politics is a very minor matter, in the grand scheme of things, and I'd become as obsessive and combative over it as those sports enthusiasts whose misplaced fervor had previously earned my sneering amusement.

Now think about the word "illegal" and think about the history of Las Vegas with the gambling and mafia history.

That is the wonder of the Tea Party: they have no concrete policies, just ideology and fiery rhetoric. They have yet to be called upon to deal with the realities of our political system.

But for now, it is to their advantage to simply try to be the ideal candidate that Middle America wants: conservative, hard-working, Washington outsider, etc.

And the less they actually say out loud the better at this point. That was the mistake that Palin made and O'Donnell is making.

The way I saw it in 06 was because of the Iraq War and more importantly the slew of Republican scandals. In 08 I think it was largely a matter of the traditional change from Republicans to Democrats and a sweep caused by Obama.

That is a joke. They have no proposals to cut the deficit. They want to continue the Bush Tax cuts for the wealthiest 2%. They don't want to touch medicare advantage program (death panels!). Explode the defense budget. Where are the cuts coming from? The stimulus package adds a tiny fraction to our long term fiscal deficit. As do "earmarks" which they voted against reforming anyway.

You mean in 04 they came out voting for Bush because of the Iraq war. By 2006 things had already changed. For 06 it was perhaps of what you and I both mention. Many have commented on the reasons why they lost in 06 when Robert Novak chimed in:

Exit polls confirmed what had been clear to anyone who spent any time on the campaign circuit this year. Opposition to the war and the president had produced a virulent anti-Republican mood. About two weeks before the election, political technicians running the campaign of Rep. Charles Bass in New Hampshire suddenly realized that the popular six-termer was in deep trouble. His moderate voting and record of pork-delivery (including a federal prison for his district) meant nothing. He was swept under by the anti-Iraq voting tide.

The only people complaining about spending were Democrats, and they were largely ignored by both the administration and the media. The Iraq and Afghan budgets weren't included as part of the actual budget but instead were 'supplemental expenditures'(big fucking supplementals, but supplementals all the same). This enabled the Republicans to pretend they were fiscally responsible (if you didn't count the emergency spending on a war we couldn't avoid, blah blah blah).

It's sick. It's really, really sick.

I didn't condone anything. I don't have to like Angle or even care about her. All that matters to me is that Reid gets punished. Not just for his being completely inept and leading the country into double digit unemployment and debt as far as they eye can see but that's a big part of it. The other part is how he played u.s. military members in a war zone. For that he doesn't get a pass from me ever.

I think maybe he was chained up in a yard before because his neck where a collar used to be is pure scar tissue. He's clearly not socialized, very wary and spooky of people.

That said, he isn't neurotic so he doesn't seem to have been abused as much as maybe neglected. Within a couple of hours of having him inside on Saturday, he was letting me pet him without dodging away. Now he's moved right in and proving to be quite the little hedonist. He's a terrific little guy, mellow temperament and well behaved. Almost looks like a mini-Rottweiler, very solidly built and quite handsome, weighing maybe 20 pounds.

Since it appears he's going to be staying, he needs a name besides "Buddy" before that's the one that sticks. Anyone got any ideas? Extra points for creativity. :D

Buzz. Wrong.

According to the OMB, receipts in 2001 were 1.991 trillion. they dropped to 1.782 trillion in 2003, but then were up to 2.1 trillion in 2005 and then 2.523 trillion by 2008. So no, the total on and off budget revenues didn't drop.

2001- 1,991,142
2002 - 1,853,149
2003 - 1,782,321
2004 - 1,880,126
2005 - 2,153,625
2006 - 2,406,876
2007 - 2,568,001
2008 - 2,523,999
2009 - 2,104,995

In addition, the total deficit had closed to 160 billion in 2007, but then grew to 458 billion in 2008, and then exploded to 1.4 trillion in 2009 and the 2010 estimate is 1.5 trillion and may edge lower into 2012 and beyond.

If you fail to grasp that the best way to get people to back off the wild-eyed talk of resort to the second amendment is to present candidates who are able to address the legitimate concerns of a large and angry portion of the population, and demonstrate thereby that they do not - contrary to their darkest fears - live under a tyranny, then there's not much point in continuing the discussion.

You hide under the beds from the "inevitable" Tea Party violence while I tune my banjo.

Your reading of Angle's statement gives her way too much credit. She's neither a satirist nor a deep thinker. Your ability to shrug off political violence is either myopic or reflexive hyper-partisanship.

So now we need to placate citizens who fantasize of second amendment remedies, rather than condemn them as extremists who don't understand that sometimes in a democracy you don't get your way, your party loses and the solution isn't discussion of political violence?

What a shock. A revanchist plays a banjo.

Obama only got 40% of the white vote. He couldn't have won back in the 80's when the electorate was 90% white.

In 2008 the electorate was only 75% white, so Obama was able to win due to getting roughly 80% of the non-white vote.

As for racist voting, Obama got 9% of the white vote in AL. Even John Kerry, who did no better overall and LOST his presidential election, got 20% of the white AL vote. So not exactly Boers, but you're not too far off.

But there's a big difference between rights and remedies. The latter implies a threat of physical harm.

I know I'm a broken record on this, but you can take solace in one simple fact: our tribe is growing, their tribe is shrinking. It's called demographics, and it's immutable.

The very fact that all these races exist should be proof enough that they all have some demographic durability. If they're still here after all this time, they're not likely to just disappear, not even disappear over the course of a few centuries.

The Ainu of Japan are effectively gone. The hill tribes of China, originally the indigenes, are effectively gone. But the Indians of North and South America are not gone. Partly, they remain, as the Cherokee, the Navajo, and so forth, but the greater part of the story is that they've been folded into a new development in which Indian and European and African ancestries are thrown together.

No one tribe is going to come out as the sole forbears of the future population of the U.S. Most of our descendants will trace their ancestry part to Europe, part to Africa, part to Asia, and part to the Americas. (And eventually, 98 percent to African homo-sapiens, and 2 percent to homo Neanderthalensis.)

It's by no means inevitable that all these people are permanently Democrats. As more and more Americans can trace their ancestry to all over, the alignment of class divisions with racial divisions breaks down. Class divisions are politically significant. "Tribe" isn't the only factor at play here.

I'm not that well versed on NV politics. But I do know this: even in 2008, when Obama won NV easily (55-43), Reid was very unpopular in his home state, with approval numbers in the low 30's. And that hasn't gotten better since then. If the gop had nominated someone from the non-Angle/O'Donnell school of sanity, they'd be winning this seat easily.

Reid may suck, but at least he's sane. Putting lunatics like Angle in the Senate is a worse alternative.

I agree with much of your analysis. But there are certain things to remember when looking at American politics over the next couple of generations. And these things don't bode well for a party that's actually currently moving backwards when it comes to attracting minority voters.

First, political allegiance among the races is surprisingly static. In terms of national figures, whites have voted for the GOP (presidential and congressional elections) at a roughly 55% rate for the last 4 decades. Blacks have voted Dem in the 90%+ range over that same time period, during which Hispanics have voted 60-70% Dem. The same is true with Asians. Sure there are exceptions (Cubans in FL, Vietnamese in So California), but the national numbers haven't changed much.

Second, while the number of multi-ethnic individuals is growing, they are still a very small minority, as most folks still marry/have kids within their race. Moreover, biracial kids are more likely to identify with the minority parent's race.

Third, and most important, is the drastic overall change coming due to population growth rates. Whites are currently 67% of the US population; in 35 years, that number will be 47%--this amounts to a huge, unprecedented change in the ethnic makeup of America. And there's a multiplier effect with kids. Babies born today are already majority-minority. Pretty soon the entire under 18 population will be majority-minority, and these are the new voters of the next few election cycles.

Think of it this way. There are currently 5.5 white voters for every black voter. In 2050, that will be only 3.6 white voters for every black voter. But the even bigger change is among Hispanics. There are currently 6 white voters for each Hispanic voter; by 2050 there will only be 1.6 white voters for each Hispanic.

Point is not that anyone is permanently a member of any party. Rather it's that the GOP cannot continue on its current path and have any chance of an enduring
Republican majority. The party will HAVE to change to appeal to new voters, and this will mean serious policy shifts over the years. As long as it is primarily a party of whites, the GOP will slowly but surely shrink. And as long as the far right/tea party rhetoric dominates the GOP, these necessary shifts are probably impossible.

Prudence will suggest that at any income level, it's a mistake to stretch to buy anything. No income, not even that of a justice of the supreme court, is truly secure. [The justices have no protection against inflation, you see.]

I'd say it's a rhetorical stretch to call anyone who buys a house that they cannot easily afford even after taking a substantial drop in income an idiot. Unwise, yes. Imprudent, yes. Idiot?

And as long as the far right/tea party rhetoric dominates the GOP, these necessary shifts are probably impossible.

Well, yes, as far as the next 50 years go. The GOP is on its last legs. But Hispanic voters have no real reason to favor the exact same things as black voters. As whites fade from the scene, if there is to be affirmative action for blacks, it can only come as preferences over the new majority, Hispanics. Hispanics are not likely to feel that they are at fault and must cough up reparations.

The new majority, like the old one, will be the ones paying most of the taxes. Government spending is a negative-sum game at the margin. The next dollar spent gives enough of a benefit to command a majority vote, but the losers of that vote pay more than the winners gain. Hispanics will feel the pinch of this.

The economy will be stretched thinner. You have argued that various demographic groups are remarkably stable. If you are right, then as Hispanic numbers burgeon and white numbers drop, average earnings levels and educational attainment must follow along. It won't be possible to maintain spending by raising taxes on whites. Already too few in number to carry the burden alone, in the future, they will be an utterly insufficient tax base. Either spending will have to be cut, or Hispanics will have to pick up, out of their modest incomes, a much heavier tax load.

It won't be a renewed GOP, not in any form recognizable to us of this day. But there will be a party that wants spending restrained.

OT: It seems I have adopted a new "son." Last week, someone dumped a dog here and after 4 days, I finally was able to coax him with food offerings close enough to catch him and bring him in.

Kitty.

When my mother got her first cat (just after she divorced my father), she made the mistake of asking me what he should be named. I told her, "Rover". And so it happened.

Mind you, I wasn't a kid when this happened. I was 33.
