Sharron Angle Resorts to Blatant Dishonesty

Politics • Views: 5,653

Sharron Angle’s new attack ad contains a statement that is … no other way to say it … a lie.

The ad asserts that Harry Reid voted to pay for “Viagra for convicted child molesters.” But in reality, what Reid voted against was one of many silly obstructionist amendments to the health care reform bill introduced by Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, banning insurance coverage for Viagra for convicted sex offenders.

Angle herself might be stupid enough to miss the point of this political maneuvering, but the GOP operatives funding her campaign and coming up with these ads certainly do understand it. It’s simple, glaring dishonesty in plain view.

Why does she open her ads with a picture of her holding hands with Harry Reid?

And the Christine O'Donnell look-a-like narrator is a nice touch. I wonder if SHE'S a witch?

Hopefully, what this means, is that when Harry Reid gives his victory speech on election night, he can skip the polite "My opponent ran a solid campaign" bullshit and simply say, "Thank you for voting for me. Though I know that a lot of you aren't super happy with me, at least I'm not some crazy lying bitch like Sharron Angle."

I'm currently teaching a middle-school level class on the American revolution and we have 13 students. I thought it was very auspicious.

For that matter, if 13 were unlucky, why has the US been so successful?

13 Romantic Heretic  Thu, Oct 7, 2010 1:34:36pm

Actually, this sort of thing has been going on for a while.

I had a book in my library, Holy Terror, that was written in the early 80s. It was about the rise of the Religious, libertarian Right in the U.S.

One incident stayed in my mind. NCPAC had targeted Birch Bayh for one of their campaigns. One ad they ran showed someone standing next to a missile silo they claimed was empty because Bayh had voted against appropriations for ICBMs.

Actually the Air Force had emptied it because the missile in it was obsolete and too small to hold the new generation of missiles.

Bayh asked for a retraction and got it. It was printed in the newspapers under the tide schedules. So lots of people saw the TV ad. Damned few saw the retraction.

So this has been going on for a while.

18 Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All  Thu, Oct 7, 2010 1:36:22pm

That was the whole point of the amendment, so people could run ads like this. Mind you Sharon Angle is being opportunistic as hell with this, and it's scummy, crappy, and in general unsavory, but I'm willing to bet that in this case there is an equivalency going on here.

Both sides do this crap. It doesn't excuse it. But that's why there's the Truth-o-Meter. Which is a fun little site to see if people have been honest or not.

Democrats' Enthusiasm Not Low, Just Typical

A look deeper inside measures of voter interest suggests Democratic voters aren't particularly disengaged from this election, at least not by historical standards. They are expressing roughly normal levels of interest for this stage of a midterm campaign season.

Democratic voters, in short, are behaving in an ordinary way.

The difference is that Republicans—both hard-core Republicans and those who merely lean that way—are extremely, highly, exceptionally (you pick the modifier) engaged in the campaign. They are expressing much higher levels of interest than normal.

Republican voters, in short, are behaving in an extraordinary way. The enthusiasm gap is almost entirely a result of this surplus of energy on the Republican side.

This picture tells you a lot about the challenge Democrats face in the final month of the campaign. If history is any guide, Democrats will close the enthusiasm gap some, for their voters tend to check into the game later. And perhaps Republican enthusiasm already is so high that it can't rise much further in the campaign's final weeks.

MBF @ 18. Who has it?

Since you felt my post was worth a down-ding, I presume you have issues with what I wrote, so I'll attempt to clarify and explain further.

Let me be clear, Sharon Angle is a loon who has no business being in the Senate or dog catcher or in general in any position where people have to trust her judgment. I've made that clear before and will do so again. In this specific case however, a misleading attack ad is about par for the course and done by a very large percentage of political candidates on both sides of the aisle.

Evidently I wasn't clear in my first post. The ad is true in a literal sense, but misleading in a real world sense. that was the whole reason I linked to polifact.com in the first place, because you can see how politicians of all stripes say misleading things and air misleading attack ads.

Hopefully that helps better explain what I was trying to say in post 18.

thanks!

Good point, in this case I do believe that equivalence applies as a general rule in political candidacies. I've looked through PolitiFact. And the worst rating they've given Reid on an Angle position is a couple of "Half True"s. and a "barely-True" by some PAC that's been hammering Angle

When I said it, I was thinking more in a larger scale, that you're going to see distortions and falsehoods in any sort of political campaign. And I disagree that in this case there was any sort of Magic Balance Fairy going on with my previous posts.

And I could be wrong, but as I look through politifact.com, I don't see any real pattern of one side or the other having more misrepresentations and lies than the other. which in this case is the best aggregate of information about truthfulness in political ads and statements that I've been able to find.

Well, while it may be true that "both sides do it" can be applied in most instances, the preponderance of bullshit does seem to be coming from one side this cycle. And it's not like pro-Democratic groups are getting a shitload of money from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, etc. to defeat incumbents...but someone is (see Chamber of Commerce).

I agree with what you're saying. In this case I was looking more at the big picture and history of political attack ads, which is why I feel the equivalency applied in this case.

Personally, I think we're both right depending on the context. Both parties do this crap historically, and that this particular election, the Republicans are spewing much more crap than the Democrats. :)

(and don't get me started on the foreign money pouring into the Republican PACs and anonymous ads hitting the airwaves. Last I check the Republican outside groups are outspending the Democrats 8 to 1. Yeah, remember how everyone was afraid of the Unions flooding the airwaves? Uhhh... not so much.)

Pearce brought up the Huffington Post in his statement because that was the media outlet that first reported on the comments he made at the Los Lunas forum.

Pearce can try to steer the conversation to jobs now, but in August he was playing off emotions in some ways similar to those behind the “birther” movement when he sent out a news release challenging Teague to take a stand on a proposal to build an Islamic center near Ground Zero.

“His religion’s a cult,” Pastor Reed said. “The Christian community—all the Christians, theologians and scholars, all recognize that, that Mormonism is a cult. I have books in my library on cults, and it lists Mormonism right there with all these bizarre cults. Well, there must be a reason. I mean, here a member of a cult is one of the most powerful people in the United States. Doesn’t that alarm you? And his allegiance is to Salt Lake City. Something is up with that. Something’s weird. But nobody touches that. … Harry Reid’s allegiance is to Salt Lake City. The Mormon church is rich, powerful, they do illegal things. They do secretive things. They’ve got all this money. They own American businesses. There’s weirdness going on there.

Copiapo, Chile (CNN) -- Rescuers in Chile have just another 89 meters (292 feet) left to drill and are expected to break through into the area where 33 miners are trapped by Saturday, Chilean Mines Minister Laurence Golborne said Thursday.

Depending on whether engineers decide to encase the rescue shaft with steel casing, the 33 miners could be extracted from the collapsed San Jose gold and copper mine within two to 10 days after breakthrough, Golborne added.

I honestly see nothing about O'Donnell or Angle or many of the other tea party endorsed candidates that makes me think they'll be effective senators. I see people who are simply running on the fact they're anti Obama well you need to be more than that if you're going to be in the frigging US Senate and the Republican Party is trying to get a majority so these people are going to need to do more than just bellyache about how Obama is ruining American society. When they say they want smaller government, we need to ask them how. All they give is platitudes about socialism and blah blah.

It's more than lies regarding Viagra. The lies also include Senate Bill 2611, vote 157 which the Angle camp claims to be "special tax breaks" and "social security benefits" for illegal aliens. Yesterday I debunked the social security claim. Here's some further information:

Republican challenger Sharron Angle falsely claims Sen. Harry Reid voted to give “special tax breaks to illegal aliens." He did nothing of the kind. In fact, Reid sponsored an amendment to the comprehensive immigration bill in 2007 that made it clear that illegal immigrants remain ineligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income workers.

[...]

No ‘Special Tax Breaks’

In particular, the ad attacks Reid’s "votes to give special tax breaks to illegal aliens.” Angle is primarily referring to the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income workers. But Reid is not proposing to pay benefits to illegal immigrants — not until and unless they become U.S. citizens or are granted legal status. And these are not “special tax breaks” for illegals, but rather existing tax credits for low-income legal residents.

What’s the basis for Angle’s claim? She points to the 2006 and 2007 immigration bills. Both would have created a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented Americans. In the context of that legislation, there was a debate about whether former illegal immigrants who received probationary Z visas as part of a four-step process to become legal permanent residents would be eligible for this tax credit. But illegal immigrants are not eligible for the credit, and the bill would not have changed that.

According to a 2007 report by the conservative Heritage Foundation, “all individuals in probationary Z visa status will be given lawful Social Security numbers, which makes the Z visa holder immediately eligible for… the EITC.” The law would have to be specifically amended for former illegal immigrants whose status is adjusted to not be eligible for the EITC.

The Angle campaign refers specifically to two amendments offered by Republican senators during the 2006 debate. Reid voted against both:

* Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama offered an amendment, which failed, that would have banned legal residents who lived here illegally prior to Jan. 7, 2004, from ever receiving the EITC.

* Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada offered an amendment, which passed, that would have banned legal residents who once lived here illegally from retroactively claiming a tax refund or credit prior to 2006.

[...]

No ‘Social Security for Illegals,’ Either

Angle’s ad also charges that Reid voted “to give illegals Social Security benefits.” That’s false.

Yes, Reid voted against Ensign amendments in 2006 and 2007 that would have barred someone living here legally from receiving Social Security credits for work done while that person was living in the country illegally. The key phrase in that sentence is living here legally. Reid did not propose giving Social Security to illegal immigrants until and unless they are living here legally and have paid into the system long enough to become eligible for benefits.

A move that will stir debate about the billions of dollars worth of federal set-aside contracts that Alaska native companies receive.

I remember during the health care wrangling in the Senate, it was specifically reported on CNN that Republicans introduced amendments like "no viagra for child molesters" for the express purpose of forcing the Democrats to vote against it, and then using this to embarrass the Democrats in the 2010 elections. Sure enough, CNN got that story right: that's exactly what's happening. At the time, I didn't expect this tactic to actually work; surely American voters are too smart? Maybe not.

Voting against this idea isn't the same as voting for paying for Viagra for child molesters. On the other hand, unless there was some more subtle sabotage contained in the amendment, I can't see a constructive reason to vote against it. Then again, I can't see why insurance should ever have to pay for Viagra, especially considering all the really critical medical expenses going unpaid.

Coburn's amendment had nothing to do with trying to control abuse of children, and neither did Reid's vote against it. Coburn offered that amendment when the reconcilation bill was being debated in the Senate in order to derail progress on the health care reform bill. If the Senate made any amendment at all to the bill, then the bill would have had to go back to the House to be debated on again, and Coburn and fellow Republicans were introducing every amendment they could think of that would sound bad to vote against just to force Democrats to choose between sending the bill back for more delay or giving Republicans fake claims to embarrass Democratic opponents about how they voted, as Angle is trying to do. (In fact, the bill had to be sent back to the House anyway for a final fine tuning, but that occurred at the end and not when Coburn's amendment came up).

Coburn also had a health care proposal of his own that he was touting as an alternative, and there was no measure in it forbidding Viagra for sex offenders. Coburn also voted against Franken's anti-rape provision in a defense appropriations bill prior to this. The whole issue is fake.

Things here are getting absurd, if you folks want more of what Harry Reid is dealing, then you are going to be living in the age of hyper inflation and ultimate poverty.

I really don't care what kind of innuendo that folks portray, because the political/media class in this country have never studied accounting or actuarial tables.

We are broke plain and simple, and we need an economy that is producing jobs and and real value and in-spite of what the Keynesian text tell us, that can only happen with lower real tax rates and and a growing economy.

No tax increase has ever lead to economic growth- its an oxymoron...
Sharon Angle will vote for policies that will lead to economic rather than government growth-

She will not vote to arrest abortionist nor their clients, nor will she rewrite the nations text books to have a creationist only basis.

WAKE Up and understand that what ever you might believe or not believe it will be meaningless if we do not get our fiscal house in order!

If you think Sharron Angle is just about achieving some absurd right wing fantasy of paying off the deficit by cutting taxes or about economic growth (when she said it's not her problem to help create jobs in Nevada) then you haven't really been following Sharron Angle.

Here are some of the positions she has taken:

She has said Social Security and Medicare violate the Ten Commandments [really]. She has said Social Security and Medicare should be “phased out.” She has responded to questions in the Las Vegas Sun by stating that there should be no attempt to fix Wall Street practices and that the bailed out banks should be allowed to do whatever they want without regulation. She has repeatedly spoken of violent insurrection (“second amendment remedies”) if her opponent is democratically elected by the voters of Nevada (so much for representative democracy!). She wants to eliminate the Department of Education and the Department of Energy. While opposing government health programs for everyone else, she herself gets her health care through the Federal Employees Insurance Plans. She favors using Nevada as a nuclear waste dumpsite location. While blaming Reid for the poor Nevada economy, she says it would not be her role as senator to help create jobs in Nevada. She has come out against unemployment insurance. She has come out for forcing women who are raped to bear the rapist’s child. She has come out against colonoscopies and other routine cancer screening procedures known to save countless lives. She has come out against medical care for autism and publicly ridiculed people with autism. And perhaps her dumbest health insurance idea is proposing that to “reduce” costs by having only women who expect to be pregnant sign up for and pay insurance premiums for maternity coverage, leaving the obvious question of how the premiums they pay could remain less than paying their own medical costs out of pocket without insurance, when only the people collecting the medical claims are paying premiums to fund the claims payments.

All this comes from what she herself has said.

Her ideas are extreme, destructive, and contrary to the views and values of most Americans. Some of her ideas are also mind bogglingly stupid.

It should have been a slam dunk amendment and yet the dems still managed to fall into a pit of their own making. I don't feel sorry for Reid, this isn't a lie, and he did vote to allow HCR to cover viagra for convicts. He wasn't smart enough to see this coming which is just more evidence that he's a moron.

212 krypto  Fri, Oct 8, 2010 6:01:33pm

It will be interesting to see just how many well-known Republican figures in Nevada end up endorsing Reid by November 2 because of Angle's unique unsuitability for the US Senate :

"Harry Reid can now boast a second Republican feather in his cap, of sorts. Less than 24-hours after earning the endorsement of Bill Raggio, a highly influential Republican and Nevada state senator, the Senate majority leader on Friday landed the support of Dema Guinn, the wife of the former governor who died unexpectedly this year.

"In a statement, Mrs. Guinn described the commitment of her husband, Kenny Guinn, to education, concluding: “That is why I am supporting Senator Harry Reid for reelection.”

“Senator Reid’s unwavering support for vital education programs such as the Millennium Scholarship, together with his tireless efforts to create new jobs and protect Nevada businesses from the unprecedented challenges we have faced during these trying economic times earned my respect, and my vote,” Mrs. Guinn said.

.....
One day earlier, Mr. Reid received an unlikely — and reluctant — endorsement in a blistering statement issued by Mr. Raggio, in which he criticized Sharron Angle and supported Mr. Reid.

The statement from the veteran lawmaker assailing Ms. Angle, a fellow Republican and Tea Party favorite, and “her extreme and often even radical ideas and positions,” was big news in the Silver State.

“What is difficult to overlook is her record of being totally ineffective as a four-term assemblywoman, her inability or unwillingness to work with others, even within her own party, and her extreme positions on issues such as Medicare, Social Security, education, veterans affairs and many others,” his two-page statement read. “I am lifelong Republican and unlike Ms. Angle, I have never changed parties. I have always supported Jeffersonian principles of free enterprise, low taxes, limited government and fiscal responsibility.”

He concluded that he was “unable to support Sharron Angle” because “we need someone in the U.S. Senate who can be effective, work with others, and best represent the interests of our state.”

Damn, did that actually happen to you before?

Don't know about kragar, but it happened to me. I bought a used car in 2005 that had a "W" sticker on it. Three months later, at the regional theater convention (obviously not a hotbed of Republican support), some one told me, "Hey, do you drive a Mitsubishi? Looks like one got keyed in the parking lot." And sure enough...

I'm fairly sure I know who did it, and haven't bothered to even acknowledge that person's existence since then. Neither that person nor the car are in the picture anymore.
