Carl Paladino’s ‘Religious Values’: ‘Dysfunctional Homosexuals’ Have ‘Nothing to Be Proud Of’

Wingnuts • Views: 4,973

GOP gubernatorial candidate for New York Carl Paladino, who sent out emails to his list containing overt racism, pornography, and bestiality, and fathered a child in an extramarital affair, is telling audiences that he considers himself the “religious values” candidate.

And as the religious values candidate, he wants you to know that gay people are dysfunctional and doomed to failure (not to mention that burning in hell thing): Carl Paladino: Kids Shouldn’t Be ‘Brainwashed’ Into Thinking Being Gay Is ‘A Successful Option’.

Paladino first was in Borough Park at the Karlsberg Synagogue on 53rd Street. His second was at Kohel Adas Kasho On Ross Street in Williamsburg. Paladino plugged himself as the “religious values” candidate at both events.

Speaking to a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders in Borough Park, Paladino noted how he boycotted the Gay Pride parade Democratic foe Andrew Cuomo marched in, along with his daughters, this summer.

“There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual,” he said. “That’s not how G-d created us, and that’s not the example that we should be showing our children — and certainly not in our schools.” …

Update: Paladino’s campaign manager, Michael Caputo, tells me that the campaign and its hosts discussed for several days what Paladino would say to his audience today, but that printed remarks including the phrase ‘dysfunctional homosexuals’ were not provided to reporters via the campaign, but by a rabbi.

Not suprisingly, Paladino said he would veto any legislation that seeks to legalize gay marriage in New York.

“I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option,” he said. “It isn’t.”

Calling himself the “religious values candidate,” he said, “I will not support immoral legislation.”

Yes, because people who are capable of leading happy lives married to people of the opposite sex so often get brainwashed into being gay instead...you asshole.

There's that 'option' language again. Closely akin to 'lifestyle choice.'

He's trying to make hay from the fact that media reports have included statements that weren't included in his speech, but were included in his prepared remarks. He's tried to claim that he isn't intolerant, and yet the fact is that what he did say was plenty hateful and intolerant for gays and lesbians.

And that Paladino's comments come on the heels of the bust of a gay-bashing torture gang in the Bronx highlights the irony.

The latest incident, allegedly perpetrated by nine youths from the Latin King Goonies gang, took anti-gay bias to a horrific new level.

In what New York's police commissioner described as a "wolf-pack" attack, the mob allegedly forced a 17-year-old into a deserted Bronx basement apartment, stripped, beat and slashed him, before sodomizing him with a toilet-plunger handle.

His crime? The gang thought he was gay, police say.

According to police, the gang members, aged between 17 and 23 years old, then abducted another 17-year-old, who the first victim said was gay.

After tying up and beating the boy, the gang allegedly lured in a 30-year-old man who was thought to have been the second teen's lover.

The older man was stripped, sodomized with a small baseball bat, forced to drink large quantities of alcohol, and burned with a cigarette, Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

"This was a reaction to the fact that they had engaged in homosexual activity," Kelly said.

Family values in politics:
My family got involved when I ran for mayor of that as yet unnamed desert town back in the 80s; or as involved as they could be in an election that included fewer than 800 voters. My step-monstermother was a county commissioner at the time and she friggin' endorsed my lunatic conspiracy-spouting opponent! I won anyway. She had to resign the next year over a DUI arrest. She is very active in tea party politics these days and often decries the influx of minorities into her formerly peaceful community.

“There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual,” he said.

This was in his prepared remarks, but he didn't actually say it. Now he's demanding an apology for reporting that he said it.

"This thing was highlighted only because of the words that were on a written statement that I did not speak. I crossed them out," he said. "They were unacceptable to me, and that's the only reason we are talking about it today because those words were given by someone to the press and the press, in their own pariah way, needed to write something."

'Crazy Carl' Paladino blames furor over his anti-gay remarks on rival for governor Andrew Cuomo

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Carl Paladino got on "Fox & Friends" this morning to address the controversial comments he made about gays during a visit with Orthodox Jewish leaders Monday - and the upshot is that he blames the whole mess on Democratic frontrunner Andrew Cuomo.

Paladino assigns that blame in two ways: One, he says he was responding to Cuomo's having brought his daughters to this summer's NYC Gay Pride parade.

Two, he claims the Cuomo campaign obtained a copy of his prepared remarks that included the phrase "dysfunctional homosexuals," which he scratched out and decided not to say in his speech, and gave it out to reporters.

Additional highlights, via Fox:

On Stance on Homosexuality: "I know the difficulties that homosexuals suffer. I have a nephew and I have employees who work for me who are of that persuasion and we have never had a problem and I say that very clearly, unequivocally. None."

On a Gay Pride Parade he attended: "I stumbled on one in Toronto one time with my wife. We watched this. There were men in speedos grinding and doing things, okay, to each other. I just said, that's not right."

re: #62 reine.de.tout

Right.
Being gay isn't a choice people make, it's how they're born, I firmly believe that. I know that my youngest brother acted differently than my other brothers from the time he was very very young. Loved him just the same - but he was different, not in a bad way, just different.

Who in their right mind would make a "choice" that would subject them to ridicule, harrassment, and the idiocy of folks like Paladino?

Some of these guys--I'm thinking of Lou Sheldon right now--honestly don't seem to comprehend that most of the population is wired to be straight, couldn't be gay if you...well...threatened them with dire social and legal consequences...and enjoy being straight. It's as though they think if we're not constantly reminded and kept in line, everyone will be gay.

I try not to suggest homosexuality as a cause of homophobia all the time, but in this case...why would it be so hard for someone to understand how hard-wired heterosexuality is for the majority of the population?

81 Lidane  Mon, Oct 11, 2010 11:41:26am

re: #62 reine.de.tout

Exactly. It's not a choice. It's how someone is hardwired.

That's why all this blather about lifestyle choices makes me angry. No one chooses to subject themselves to all the bullying and all the bigotry that GLBT folks get. It's just that some folks can't get over their own hangups and ignorance, so they lash out.

There's a YA novel where the heroine saves the President from an assassin, only to be jumped by the Secret Service, who think she's with the gunman. They manage to break her arm, although they're very apologetic later on. Great moment where one of them yells 'this one doesn't have a gun', and she yells "Of course I don't have a gun, I'm fifteen!"

F.A.Q.: What is it like to cover a candidate who will say anything? | Capital New York

A conversation with WNYC political reporter Azi Paybarah about Carl Paladino's "homosexuality" speech in Williamsburg.

Josh Benson: So how did it happen that the female reporters were invited to, but couldn't get into, that Paladino event in Williamsburg? Not a whole lot of advance work for this one, I'm guessing ...

Azi Paybarah: None at all, apparently. At first, the guys inside 207 Ross Street didn't know there was an event scheduled. Maybe that's just a Williamsburg thing. I mean, I've heard of female journos and photogs getting separated at religious events. Reminds me of when I was a wedding photographer. Same racket.

Josh: I would love to hear more about your wedding-photog racket, actually. But first, the event: What happened next? What was the speech like before Paladino said the thing that eclipsed all the other things?

Azi: He tried brandishing his social-conservative credentials.

Josh: So I gather!

Azi: For some kind of tax credit that makes it easier to send kids to religious schools, against same-sex marriage, etc. etc. Amazingly, what he then said was slightly toned down from what was in his prepared remarks.

Josh: I wonder if that was accidental. Because why tone it down at all if what you wind up saying, as he did, is, "I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option. It isn’t.”

Continues.

Just an observation:

The question is: "Do you support gay marriage?"

Carl Paladino, candidate for governor of New York:

“I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option,” he said. “It isn’t.”

;-)

You could read that as partially supporting gay marriage...// The lesbian couple down the street is married, raising a family, and they appear to be both successful and happy.

Seriously, however, I do think a fair number of people who think sexual orientation is a choice are bisexual. If they are going to be monogamous, they do have to make a choice. Their mistake is assuming that there are legions of folks just like them.

He supports same-sex marriage, prosecution of corrupt public officials, the elimination of some state agencies, and referendum approval of pay increases for legislators. Relax.
Your daughter will take everything she hears around her, combine it with the values you have instilled in her, draw her own conclusions, and will make good choices, I have no doubt about it (just as I have no doubt about my own kid).

Now, whether you will always agree with her is another matter ( just as it is between me and my kid).

Relax.
Your daughter will take everything she hears around her, combine it with the values you have instilled in her, draw her own conclusions, and will make good choices, I have no doubt about it (just as I have no doubt about my own kid).

Now, whether you will always agree with her is another matter ( just as it is between me and my kid).

You know, I know you know, things reach a point where it's best to let them go on their own way, if they're not doing something to destroy themselves.

Yeah. My kids are of the type that would become Republicans just to piss me off. I'm sure that's why one of them started smoking.

Anyone who's going to be monogamous has to make a choice. They have to pick just that one person. As a married bisexual I'd say that's a much bigger narrowing down of your sexual world than picking a single gender.

I will say, it's hard for me to understand how you could really, really, know that one gender was right for you and the other wasn't. I see it--in my husband for example. Man is STRAIGHT. But on a gut level, I doubt I really get it.

Hi calochortus! I've mentioned here before, but I have - actually had, as one has passed away - two uncles. They were together almost forty years. I think you can probably guess where I stand on gay marriage - since I don't know all that many married couples with that kind of commitment!

As for being bi or monosexual (is that a word?) I can understand being attracted to both, but I have just never met a woman I was attracted to, after a while, you just assume your fairly firmly in the hetero camp. Of course, there are a lot of men I'm not attracted to either ;-)

For the purposes of the ongoing peace negotiations, "settlements" refers to any housing for Jews that is built in the territories captured by Israel in 1967, which was ethnically cleansed by the Jordanians in 1948, and which includes "East" Jerusalem (the "Jewish Quarter" and the Western Wall). Because these places were Jew-free from 1948-1967, "international law" requires that they must remain Jew-free forever.

For the purposes of everything else, "settlements" to the Palestinians refers to anyplace in Israel where Jews live.

Seriously. The Palestinians are a hopeless case. And let it be noted that Netanyahu has offered this halt in settlements. I doubt the extremists will take note.

I still don't understand why this is the first time I can remember Isreal demanding recognition by the Palestinians. Mind you, I'm 28 years old, so my political memory starts with Desert Storm and the Soviet Union only ever half existed (in fact, the fall of the Eastern Bloc was a bit of a non-event compared to Iraq—remember, third grader when this was happening). My point is, given that starting point, my experience of the history is that the US Presidency has always been dragging these two groups to the negotiating table and they've always thumbed their noses at each other and walked away (usually marked with spurts of violence).

But I fail to even see the point of having these discussions if one side refuses to recognize the very existence of the other (in their charter documents, no less!). This may be kicking a bee hive, but any idea why this point doesn't crop up more often? Do they actually talk about it more at the table?

re: #196 SanFranciscoZionist

Well, the Israelis just blew that excuse out of the water.

I have mixed feelings on the "Jewish state" part of Israel; it seems to indicate that even if the demographics changed and the population was majority non-Jewish, it'd somehow stay a Jewish state. But that's rather irrelevant, given that Jews are very committed to staying in Israel. And I'm sure that Palestinians would reject the idea that Palestine should be a non-Islamic state. So choking at recognizing Israel as a Jewish state is swallowing whales while straining at gnats.

Not at all. Fate likes the number three. There are Three Fates among the Greeks (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos), the Romans (Nona, Decima, and Morta), and the Norse (Uror, Veroandi, and Skuld), and three witches in "The Scottish Play".

New York State GOP gubernatorial hopeful Carl Paladino has 10-year-old love child

Way to go Paladino. Champion of moral purity! I guess Paladino sees adultery and a form of polygamy as an OPTION.

Yes, because people who are capable of leading happy lives married to people of the opposite sex so often get brainwashed into being gay instead...you asshole.

Mallory, who perished on Everest in the 1920's after getting very close to the summit, was for some years a practicing homosexual. He later married and had children.

The majority of gays are gay, period. But with some men, there really are options.
