Tech Note: Automatic Ad-Free Subscriptions

LGF • Views: 6,503

I’ve just finished integrating the PayPal Instant Payment Notification system with our ad-free subscriptions, so that ad-free viewing is now automatically enabled if you subscribe while logged in to your LGF account. (And if you cancel your subscription, the ad-free flag will also be turned off automatically.)

This means you no longer have to contact me and let me know your username after subscribing, and I no longer have to manually set your ad-free flag in the LGF database. Easier for everyone. Yay!

Here’s the link to subscribe at PayPal, if anyone would like to help test this cutting edge new feature. (How’s that for a tricky way to hype subscriptions? Did I mention that LGF loads 2 or 3 times faster with the ads turned off? And it’s only 33 cents a day to subscribe? OK, I’ll stop.)

Note that you must be logged in to a registered LGF account before clicking that link for the automatic feature to work.

Meanwhile, here we have the tech geek/open thread for a Tuesday afternoon.

Ad-free also makes it MUCH easier to check out featured and recent pages. There are just a lot of reasons to go with the subscription. Not least of which is supporting LGF, and the features here that help make it such a comfortable place to be.

So to go OT since these tech note posts can get sort of boring if someone doesn't, does anybody want to lay bets for when we'll next see "Reason" again and hear more about how hard it is to be a black woman living in a nation where you can get arrested for nonviolent crimes like refusing to pay your taxes?

You know . . . I was surprised to read that the temps in that cavern where they are, are 90 degrees.

I would have thought that underground, the temps would be a fairly consistent and comfortable 68 or 70.

8 Daniel Ballard  Tue, Oct 12, 2010 3:55:53pm

Charles I have a slightly awkward question-are the zedo ads helping with your LGF cash flow? If so I'll leave them alone. If however they are helping somebody else's cash flow I'll see about blocking them. But not if thats going to impact you.

They're waiting for sundown because they've been in the dark for so long. They also have special dark goggles for them so they don't get blinded by the lights when they come out. After a brief reunion with family, they're going to go to a hospital for two days where they'll be examined, treated, etc. before being released to go home (heard that on NPR)...

I think the Zedos are getting kicked up by another ad script running on LGF...to get rid of them, you need to delete the Zedo cookies from your computer...normal ad-block doesn't work on them, and they're a pain in the ass. I created a page with instructions a few weeks ago.

If I were down there, or had a loved one down there, I'm not at all convinced I could be patient with this process; though it does sound like they've thought it out as much as possible.

Looks like 2 hours set-up time. Then they're going to run tests. My guess is anywhere around 3 hours before they begin the rescue.

re: #27 Rightwingconspirator

I trust you saw the news about the deep drill moratorium? I hope its not too late!

I did!
And it's good news; not as good as it COULD be, but decent enough. Here's the parts that are worrying to us; we're not sure what all this will mean in practice:

The removal of the ban also does not mean that U.S. companies will operate at the pace and levels they did before the accident 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana. A de facto moratorium has also been in place on shallow-water drilling, with only four permits for such work approved by the federal government since the explosion, as contrasted with an average of 14 such permits having been approved per month for the 11 months that led up to the explosion.

Right now there's no moratorium on shallow-drilling - but there also have been virtually no permits issued. Will it be the same thing once this moratorium is lifted, or will they actually begin to issue permits? No telling yet . . .

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile—The man tentatively chosen to be first out of the mine where 33 men have been trapped for more than two months is a shy father of two who was caught along with his brother when the mine collapsed.

Shortly before the rescue was due to start on Tuesday, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera teased journalists at a news conference that he was pretty sure the first one out would have the last name of Avalos.

There are actually three men with that name trapped below.

But Maria Silva said the president himself had told her it would be her son Francisco Avalos.

Avalos, 31, is married and has two children.

Several questions on that quiz fall, for me anyway, into realm of "I don't care" or "yes sometimes but no others" and depending on if I pick agree or disagree for something requiring more nuance IMO causes me to swing wildly around the L/R axis. I think my blue nic has the last time I tried really hard not to come out too far left or right.

Yeah. It was a bit redundant with the check boxes.

I got some pet Miyagi oysters on Sunday - about two dozen of them (we had our 4th annual "oysterfest" over the weekend and the guy organizing bought over 300 oysters, but we had a smaller gathering of people, so there were lots of extras). Last night, I took a baker's dozen and shucked the little guys and piled sauteed spinach, bread-crumbs, parmesan, garlic, adn parsley on them, then let them have a 12 minute sauna at 450 degrees...Oysters Rockefeller and a Giants game! Heaven!

Sheesh.
I bet your wife had been driving something or the other since she was 12 - or younger.

My first "job" was working the chute for team-ropers at a local arena two miles from where I lived (down a private road)...when I was 11, I was allowed to drive our '62 Willies jeep to/from work on Tues/Thurs nights.

My favorite car trip memories involved my brother.

We'd make a rest stop and dad would refuel, while we went inside for a bit of 'relief'.

Dad would make his way inside, buy us some candy and drinks and round us up. He would pointedly ask my brother, 'Did you go?' the reply was often. 'I didn't have to'. My father, a wise man who was undermined by his second son with every sunrise would have none of that. He would march my brother into the men's room, pull down his short pants and hold him up to the urinal.

More often than not, nothing.

One occasion, just as my father was accelerating onto the highway, my brother tapped him on the should and uttered the code word, 'Emergency!' which meant he had to pee. He would not say so directly because my mom and sister were in the car and in his estimation, never, ever pee'd.

I thought my dad was going to kill him right then and there.

Once more, dad disappointed me.

I would have thought that underground, the temps would be a fairly consistent and comfortable 68 or 70.

Not that that's an order or anything - just a suggestion.

A while back, I met a college graduate who didn't understand an off-hand Jim Morrison reference I made. He had honestly never heard of The Doors.

For a relatively long time (couple of months, I guess) I seriously thought "Lady Gaga" was a meme that must have come from a SNL sketch or something similar. I thought, "ridiculously generic pop music, ridiculous name, and completely unwarranted, over-the-top fawning by everyone... ha ha! I see. It's a clever-ish critique on the horribleness of what passes for culture in modern America."

Then, just like at the end of The Sixth Sense when Bruce Willis figures out he's been dead the whole time, I realized that the joke was on me.

And I'm not even that old yet!

Some more OT stuff, here are my results from a recent political quiz...

My Political Views
I am a left social libertarian
Left: 6.25, Libertarian: 4.82

Political Spectrum Quiz

Or that looks something like this...

Image: 8x30.gif

Of course I think there has to be a better way to compare things than "Libertarian V Authoritarian" since one can be in favor of big government as a liberal while at the same time not wanting the government in our bedrooms or starting premptive wars...

A nice little entertainment, though, I agree with your point at the end.

For the record,

You are a left social libertarian.
Left: 6.28, Libertarian: 5.23

Which is reasonably close although probably should be about 7 on both.

Many did. The right prefered to use Korea & MacArthur as excuses but that's one of the the real reasons they hated Truman. But the Army didn't fall apart when Ike was forced to use African Americans as emergency replacements and that gave them the example they needed.

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

Since Aug. 22, when a narrow bore hole broke through to their refuge and the miners stunned the world with a note, scrawled in red pen, that announced their survival, these families' lives have been exposed in ways they never imagined. Miners had to describe their physical and mental health in minute detail with teams of doctors and psychologists. And in some cases, when both wives and lovers claimed the same man, everyone involved had to face the consequences.

I can't take it either. This Tea Party nonsense is just stupid. There are a few loony politicians like Bachmann, Ron Paul (maybe Sharron Angle) who would actually attempt to abolish the EPA, public education, social security and fluoride in the water but when the Republicans come into power again they are going to have to actually deal with the real world. I know some people were doubting the original story, but this seems to make it more credible

Policeman possibly linked to Falcon Lake case beheaded

The head of a Mexican police commander presumed to be investigating the reported pirate attack against David Michael Hartley on Falcon Lake was delivered to Mexican military, sources said Tuesday.

State Rep. Aaron Pena, D-Edinburg, said he was told that Rolando Flores’ head was delivered Tuesday in a suitcase.

Ruben Rios, spokesman for the Tamaulipas state prosecutor’s office, told the Associated Press that Flores is the head of state investigators in the border city of Ciudad Miguel Alemán, a small city directly across the border from Roma, Texas.

Lesley Lopez, a spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, said the head was delivered in the vicinity of Miguel Alemán.

Milk! I've been having fun lately experimenting with making my own yogurt, cream cheese, Chevre, etc. It's but and delicious.

I love dairy, and consume far too much of it. And I usually skip the sunscreen, despite my mother's concern over it.

My shrink made me take a Vitamin D blood test. Apparently I score 13. Normal range is 30-100.

Apparently this could have something to do with my depression.

Have your thyroid checked, too, if you haven't recently. I found out I had moderate hypothyroidism, and treating that helped a bit with The Mood.

I dunno. Brown is a decent man but so is Pat Quinn here in Illinois. The problem in both cases is that they are part of a Democrat/ Public Sector employee machine that is bleed their state dry. Meg Whitman and Bill Brady are not of that machine and will fight it. That is reason enough to vote for them, IMO.

My brothers found a glitch in the wiring of the car, and discovered if they kicked the wires under the driver's seat in just a certain way, it would make the seat-belt dinger go off continuously. LOL. They loved to harass my dad on long trips.

Just my take on this, from a cynical standpoint (the non-cynical part of me is just waiting to see those kids get their dads back)

1. The President of Chile, if this goes off like it should, will have to actually kill someone to be unelectable. And not even an ugly someone, a photogenic person.

2. They might just put that white butterfly on the flag.

I must have missed something about the butterfly. I'm guessing that it is an important symbol to the families?

A couple of miners have told a story about following a white butterfly (it would be exceedingly rare for a butterfly to be down there) either to safety, or they followed and missed a landslide that would have killed them, or something like that.

They have a lot of faith in the story, which is good, because they needed something.

Not feeling so cynical now. Feeling a little teary.

It wasn't that long ago, really, that these men would have been considered expendable because they were, you know, well, brown. Brown men, they aren't really people, you know. They're 3/5 of a people. We can just go to their continent and kill and enslave them, because, you know, they aren't people the way we are.

Good bye to that and don't come back.

507 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Tue, Oct 12, 2010 7:46:13pm

On one of the NPR shows I listen to, they've spent the last couple of days talking to wives and other family members of the miners. Apparently it's a Big Friggin' Deal for them to get their hair done, and wear spiffy new clothes and what-not, so as to look their best for their men.

That's all fine and good, but I wonder why it doesn't occur to them that it's probably psychologically impossible at this point for the miners to give half a damn whether their wife / mother / whatever has three hairs out of place and is wearing a year-old pair of shoes.

Also, It's extremely likely that the miners are going to smell like a bunch of miners who have been trapped underground for two+ months. There's a certain threshhold beyond which one's personal aroma simply can't be tactfully overlooked (I know this, because I once worked in retail). I wonder if provisions are in place to mitigate this.

There are two different experiences here.

Both the miners and their families will necessarily have not shared the same experiences up to now and they will experience the rescue very differently.

For the wives and family, this is a joyous holiday.

For the miners, it is also an somber homecoming.

Somebody is going into the finance office and unplugging the server from the UPS. This is the 6th time in 2.5 weeks there was evidence of the server booting back up, although the first time major file damage occurred.

I moved the frikken server to a different room under lock and key.

Actually I can remember using teletype terminals on the local university's time sharing system. Fun part was running tapes of the programs we were writing. When I mean tape, I mean paper tape..god help you if you let it get unwound.

re: #611 PT Barnum

Have played with Ubuntu and Suse but never have played with Linux long enough to see what the BFD was.

There are significant philosophical BFDs (please don't make me get all Richard M. Stallman on your ass) and significant technical BFDs, but for me the primary appeal is that Linux makes it very easy to customize my computer-using experience exactly the way I want it, limited only by my unwillingness to read (often dense) documentation and learn new skills. With (for example) Windows, the user has to adapt to the system, learn its strengths and weaknesses, and pretty much like it or lump it. Microsoft doesn't allow the user to see how the sausage is made, and in fact stipulates in the license agreement that if you attempt to discover how the sausage is made, you are legally liable for civil and even criminal penalties. With Linux, I can not only see how the sausage is made (and thereby learn from it), but I can also change the recipe to my liking.

Sure, not everybody likes to tinker around like that. I suppose most people don't like to tinker around like that. I'm not one of Those Guys who claims that Linux is all things to all people, but it definitely has its place

I hated vi. I use nano now.

It was for the RAMAC 305.

Snopes says you could lease it for $3200 a month.

My husband's first computer he had to share...with me.

(I have just given away my age.)

Well, I remember the 386 myself. In my case it replaced a 286. When I installed the old Battle of Britain game I'd had on the older machine, I remember being happy to have it run without freezing. That old 386 is long gone, but when I got it I was glad to have it.

741 Gus  Tue, Oct 12, 2010 9:05:36pm

OK The car alarm. That's lame. Seriously. I feel like it's summer along some Denver alleyway.

My husband pulled out his old games from his teenage years and loaded them on that computer. (I'm pretty sure it was a 386 or a 286.)

Run run run lightspeed crash.

The new computers ran the program so fast he couldn't react in time to do anything, and the tank or whatever it was would crash into whatever it was headed towards.

I had an Apple IIC (2 C) long ago & it had a great build your own pinball machine program, and you could vary the elasticity of the ball, and the force of gravity, and put in more than one ball.

Sometimes you could constructing a machine that would fall into repeating patterns after a while.

Also you could superimpose one ball onto another one, and start the run, and watch them diverge.

And you could put in 10 balls.

It was great fun.

And now, good night with this: From my Uncle Nick, a sailor all his life:

Subject: Position Statement of the U.S. Economy with Reference to Us Sailors!

1. We, in retirement, take exception to everyone saying that Bernanke, Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are spending like drunken sailors………

2. When we were drunken sailors, we quit when we ran out of money.

While we're waiting. . .
A quick age quiz . . .

Who here besides me remembers standing on the hump in the back-seat floor of your parents' car?

Who here besides me remembers fighting the siblings over who would get to lie on the shelf behind the backseat to get a better view out of the back window?

Anybody?
Or am I the only old person here?

We had a station wagon; when packing for a long drive to vacation, there had to be room for somebody to lie in the back (and packed so stuff wouldn't fall on them in sharp turns or stops.).

Selling off the farm:

California: 11 State Buildings Are Sold to Shore Up Budget

A Texas investment company will buy 11 state buildings to help close a $19 billion budget deficit, California officials said Monday. The company, California First L.L.C., will pay about $2.33 billion for structures including the San Francisco Civic Center, the Ronald Reagan State Building in Los Angeles and five buildings in Sacramento, producing “desperately needed revenues,” said Ron Diedrich, acting director of the Department of General Services. The state will lease the buildings for 20 years, during which time it can buy them back.

Nothing quite like buying a building twice, plus rent!

I remember those things! We had a shitty Plymouth 70's station wagon that we brought to drive in movies, had the transmission hump, RWD, all the detroit iron trimmings :D

also remember my mother's (and later, my) Firebird being tuned too lean so it'd die at stoplights oh muscle cars with emissions

Though if you mean lying in the package tray in a sedan, we never had a sedan that big :D We had wagons that size, but they're wagons, so no package tray, and then we had smaller 80's compact wagons, etc. I like small cars because small cars handle better, but part of me wants a big fat 70's van conversion

So to go OT since these tech note posts can get sort of boring if someone doesn't, does anybody want to lay bets for when we'll next see "Reason" again and hear more about how hard it is to be a black woman living in a nation where you can get arrested for nonviolent crimes like refusing to pay your taxes?

As compared to other nations where refusing to pay your taxes will not get you arrested?
