290,000 Signed Up As ‘Definite Attendees’ for Stewart-Colbert Rally

Humor • Views: 4,552

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s dueling rallies are shaping up to be truly massive.

Sign-ups for the rally have been tallied on Facebook. Beyond the 290,000 who have so far signed on as definite attendees, 145,000 more have listed themselves as maybes.

The site rallymao.com has assembled a roster of the scheduled satellite events in more than 25 states. One in New York City has been set for the SoHo Gallery for Digital Art. Other sites include the Capitol Rotunda in St. Paul, Civic Center Park in Denver, Manuel’s Tavern in Atlanta and Wasilla Middle School in Alaska.

The international locations so far include London, Paris and Melbourne (no specific sites mentioned), along with the Copenhagen Town Hall in Denmark and, perhaps most intriguingly, “base camp” at Mt. Everest in Nepal.

Mr. Stewart and Mr. Colbert have so far offered few specifics on the event. Mr. Colbert’s blowhard-conservative character will try to counter Mr. Stewart’s message — seeking a more rational approach to political discourse — by urging participants to “keep fear alive.”

But the Rallymao site made an attempt to characterize the event: “It’s like Woodstock, except it’s going to be everywhere, and without the mud.”

Groovy.

If I had my passport updated and the money I would go to this. Alas, it cannot be….

Philosophically and behaviorally, there is a difference between the Stewart/Colbert crowd and the Beck crowd. The Stewart/Colbert fans are snarky and self-deprecating, while Beck’s followers seem to take themselves and their cause with militant seriousness

Ha. I missed it at first read, ‘everest base camp’. Hilarious.

Oh wait. There’s a satellite one right near me and during the time I’m planning to be in that city anyways. Could be fun.

That’s a big number, but I’ve been to facebook parties with 150 “attending” and only 30 some people show up. And with something like this, feel like that effect could be even more exaggerated.

6 Jadespring  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 11:13:56am

The article is wrong or things have changed since they wrote it. There’s mini-meetups planned in 38 countries not just 6. Regardless of whether those meet-up are just few dozen people each that’s still pretty neat.

Those lefties aren’t even trying to hide it, are they?

Rally MAO, indeed!

8 Fozzie Bear  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 11:21:52am

If even a third of them show up, that’s still a LOT of people.

9 RogueOne  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 11:24:08am

Colbert still hasn’t announced where his will be located. I’m assuming they’ll announce he’s “had” to team up with Stewart to share the location.

I think that’s definitely the plan. Or I would bet it is.

This cracked me up. I’m assuming it’s a satirical play on stereotypes to get some people dander up. I think it probably means “Rally My Ass Off.”

I take it that this is what was announced? I can justify arguing with you guys at work, but i’d have a hard time rationalizing watching the Daily Show, lol.

That won’t go over well with someone I know. =P

Two of us will be there, and we don’t do Facebook. In all, a Birmingham group expects to send about 100. From Ala-freakn-Bama.

I saw that on Morning Joe. They played that portion and the Colbert response which, btw, was f’ing hilarious.

We have a Doggie-cam, a lightweight ccd camera with an intervalometer. I’m going to try to fly it from a tethered helium balloon to do super-scientific crowd counts. We will name the balloon “Michelle”. I’m trying to work with my kid to get photos posted via a Flicker account, but might not have the logistics to care for a laptop and a disabled wife in the crowd.

20 sagehen  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 11:53:56am

“It’s like Woodstock, except it’s going to be everywhere, and without the mud.”

And without the nudity, because it’s like, late October in DC. If you want naked people, you have to set your event for either summer, or elsewhere.

For real? I didn’t know your wife was disabled. I’m sorry to hear that. Glad you guys are going though. I’m jealous!

Probably won’t be a lot of brown acid to worry about, either.

She’s worked her way back to a walker from a wheelchair. If she keeps progressing, a hip replacement will put her back on track.

The shtick was that Colbert ‘forgot’ to get a Park permit, and had to come begging. They’ve created a combined poster.

32 Major Tom  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 12:20:05pm

My girlfriend and I were debating whether or not we should go, as money is tight, and we were shopping around for flights and hotels. We found a great deal and decided to sleep on it. The next day, the deal was gone, the hotel was virtually sold out, and prices had doubled. We freaked out, and almost couldn’t go, but we eventually found a decent hotel so we didn’t have to leave the same day we got there. There were some good deals for hotels outside of the District, but last time I checked was two weeks ago…

I joked that this would be the last time I’d get to see that many people in DC for a good cause, until the protests of the first Palin administration.

Can’t wait for Beck and Fox to declare the people there ‘unamerican.’ There willl be so many of us.

If you go into Stewart’s pages far enough you hit a bus trip reservation. The rides are mostly overnight up-and-back with no DC stay. The round trip from AL is about $145, but I don’t know how far it is for you. This bus is out Plan C backup, closing on the 18th. Sounds like a par-tee.

I booked my flight and room a couple of days after the rally announcement. A friend is driving down from Maryland and we’re sharing a room near the Dulles Airport. My aunt and uncle (who missed Woodstock and are bummed about it) are flying in as well. It should be a great time!

35 Decatur Deb  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 12:58:32pm

As of now, the following ALABAMA towns are holding local events:

Gadsden
Birmingham
Mobile
Northport
Rainbow City
Montgomery
Troy
Dothan.

If half these come off, it will be very encouraging.

There was early talk of an LGF meetup effort, but it chilled out (security, I think). We’ll be wearing “Left In Alabama” purple shirts, and possibly flying the RB-1 balloon “Michelle” (#19 above).

re: #33 Decatur Deb

That’s cool, but we have our plan booked. We considered driving, but it’s roughly 16-18 hours from where I live, and, well, that’s pretty rough. I once drove cross country from Gainesville, Fl to LA, Ca in 38 hours. It was fun, but I don’t recommend it.

I’m still considering sign options. I like, “Sanity means never having to pretend that Sarah Palin is intelligent.” or “Glenn Beck incites Violence, ask Byron Williams.” Any Ideas?

They announced a web-based slogan contest on last night’s shows. Colbert is still pushing a costume theme for the “Fear” fans, also a web contest.

I’m mulling my options for a sign. My favorite so far” “I proofread this sign.”

“Left in Alabama” made shirts, ripping the Stewart contribution “Taking It Down a Notch in Alabama”. We’re purple because of our basic slogan “We’ve Got to Make Alabama Purple Before We Can Make It Blue”.

Who knew biting humor and good old fashioned horse sense would be such a desirable commodity these days. Maybe there’s hope.
