Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer: The EDL’s American Apologists

Wingnuts • Views: 9,067

Harry’s Place has an excellent post by Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens on the repellent English Defence League (the xenophobic British gang supported and promoted by both Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer): The EDL’s American Apologists.

It’s a good follow-up to my piece for the Guardian, getting deeper into the EDL’s history of associations with groups like the violent neo-Nazi movement “Blood and Honor.”

Meleagrou-Hitchens posts this horrific video showing the thugs of the EDL at their recent rally in Leicester, terrorizing and attacking a restaurant full of Asian families. It’s sickening.

Youtube Video

These are Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer’s allies at work, and this is what Geller and Spencer are working to bring to America.

When faced with the ever-mounting evidence of far-right thuggery at their rallies, the EDL leadership and their apologists often try to wriggle out by claiming that the rally was ‘hijacked’ by extremists who don’t represent the movement. In an email to Newsweek’s Declassified blog (which ran a story about her support for the EDL), Geller defended the EDL in precisely these terms, writing: ‘The left and real neo-Nazis frequently attempt to infiltrate EDL rallies in order to discredit the EDL.’ This is just not good enough. If a Muslim group that claimed to be moderate had regular appearances by al-Muhajiroun (or, to take a US example, Revolution Muslim) at their rallies, something tells me that the EDL, Geller and company would not be so ready to excuse this.

Geller’s ally Robert Spencer also attempts to defend the EDL in a response to Johnson’s piece:

I don’t believe they’re [the EDL] neo-fascist white supremacists, as Johnson claims. There is no way that Pamela Geller or I would ever work with, endorse, or approve of any genuine neo-fascist or white supremacist individual or group in any way, shape or form.

Spencer has also defended the EDL as patriots who ‘stand for freedom’, and reproduces materials from their official website. If Spencer were to apply a tenth of the amount of online research he does on Muslims to the EDL, he would find that his claims about the group are simply wrong.

I have to differ with Alexander here; I think both Spencer and Geller know full well who their allies are, what they do, and what they stand for.

I have always been impressed by, and quite grateful for, your firm and vocal stance in not siding with fascist groups like this Charles. It's speaks great volumes about your integrity.

It also speaks great volumes about Spencer's and Geller's complete lack of it, that they would align with and make excuses for such assholes.

What a crock of shit Robert Spencer, you work with them all the time. Every time you've gone to Europe some have been present at your rallies. The uncovering of these creeps has gone on now for four years, yet you turn your eyes the other way and pretend that they don't exist on your blog, in SIOE, in SIOA, and all of the other groups the Eurofascist blogs you work through. You can pretend all you want, we know better and the press is beginning to see you for what you are.

Britain has benefited so, so, so damn much from the immigration of so many Pakistani professionals. The civil service, the hospitals, the businesses have all seen huge benefits from educated, willing, able Pakistani-- incidentally Muslim-- people coming to the UK for a better chance for their families. I have no issue whatsoever with exposing and dealing with the growing threat of radical Islamism. In fact, i endorse the idea.

That said, to conflate the notions of Islam as beiong part and parcel of radical Islamism is absurd, racist and hateful.

The vast majority of Muslims in Britain are law abiding. Are there violent, dangerous and radical Muslims? Yes, there are- but they are small in number and by a wide margin rejected by British Muslims.

If there is a reason the radicals (almost universally first generation immigrants) seem to thrive it is in no small measure because of their own stupidity and the irrational hate embodied by the likes of the EDL and similar groups on the continent.

It's also that, if someone moves to the UK from Pakistan, there is one thing that's definitely true about them: They moved from a society where Islam is the dominant religious and cultural (and political, really) force, to a place where they are a minority in every way.

I don't get the assumption, by Geller and the rest, that they're doing so in order to promote their old way of life. To me, the default assumption would be that they were unsatisfied with their old life, their old country, their old way of life, and are accepting that this multicultural society they're moving into is better.

It's a complicated issue. I have written on this before.

What you say used to be true- people left to start over, etc. Whereas before when you left, you left. Mail took weeks, phone calls were expensive and rare and the New World exposed you to new ideas.

Nowadays it is different. Email takes minutes. what was taught in the Old Country is taught in the New Place- curricula, religious sermons as well as radical political ideology. Technology makes it difficult for parents to give their kids that 'new life' and 'new start'.

The issue is really one of integration versus assimilation.

We can choose to assimilate as much or as little as we want into society.

The Amish, Hasidic Jews, or Pennsylvania Dutch are examples of groups who choose to limit their assimilation with prevalent culture.

Integration is another matter entirely, because it denotes the acceptance of the rules that govern society- everything from stop light and speeding tickets to taxes and political participation. There is an understanding that in western democracies, we are all equal- no special status is given to religious, ethnic or racial groups.

This more than anything, fuels the radicals, that somehow they are not special, that they have to stand in line like everyone else- that they are being denied God's intention for them.

This is a long, long conversation.

My Italian great grandpa would never go back to Italy. He was an American. "When will you go back," they asked him, after he made good here. "When they build a bridge," he said. I agree with him. It is better here, and it is usually better to assimilate. On my block we have both descendants of Serbs and of Croats. In the old country they would be killing each other. Here, we have a block party & we all have a good time.

Merkel says German multicultural society has failed

Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have "utterly failed", Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

In a speech in Potsdam, she said the so-called "multikulti" concept - where people would "live side-by-side" happily - did not work.

Mrs Merkel's comments come amid recent outpourings of strong anti-immigrant feeling from mainstream politicians.

A recent survey showed that more than 30% of Germans believed Germany was "overrun by foreigners".

The study - by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think-tank - also showed that roughly the same number thought that some 16 million of Germany's immigrants or people with foreign origins had come to the country for the social benefits.

Continues.

Survey: 17% of Germans believe Jews have 'too much influence'

One in 10 Germans want 'new Fuehrer to lead the country with iron fist'; every third German believes foreign immigrants should be expelled if unemployment becomes problem

The "other" Germany - Sixty-five years have passed since the end of the Second World War, but even today it would seem that many Germans still cling to the prejudice and racism which the Nazi party identified with.

A new poll conducted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation for Political Education, a foundation with close ties to the German Social Democratic party, has found that one in 10 Germans wants "a new Fuehrer to lead the country with an iron fist", and that every third German thinks all foreign immigrants should be expelled from Germany if unemployment becomes a problem. The poll consisted of 2,500 people of different ages. The results were announced on Wednesday.

Some 25% of all respondents expressed racist opinions, and 15.9% said they somewhat understood why a Fuehrer needed to be appointed; 58% of the participants claimed that Germany needed to curb the traditional Muslim lifestyle. As for anti-Semitism, 17.2% of the survey's participants supported the statement that "Jews have too much influence in the world today".

Effing cowards.

You know what I never see, and I mean this on a personal experience level? These bigoted thugs—like thugs the world over—always look for targets who they think are defenseless and unlikely to fight back. ALWAYS.

Nine times out of then when someone has said something ugly to me in the street about being Muslim, it has been either a man or a group of 2 or 3 men (I'm a woman for those of you who may not know that yet). With one exception they've always done it when I'm alone. In the one case where I wasn't alone, I was with another woman walking down the street and the guy was safely ensconced in his work truck and able to quickly drive away.

You know what I've never seen or heard of? One of these jackasses (or a group of them) sauntering up unarmed to a physically fit Muslim man of equal size & age (or a group of them) and mouthing off or instigating violence.

They don't behave like men, they behave like mangy, opportunistic street curs whose "courage" is dependent upon the superiority of their strength in numbers when compared to the number and vulnerability of their intended victim(s).

I'm waiting for the day that I hear about a group of these EDL idiots marching up to an equally rabid group of radical jihadi Islamists and duking it out one-on-one. It isn't going to happen. Neither of those groups operate on concepts of justice or fair play.

Searching for Facts in Germany's Integration Debate

There is also no question that a lot of immigrants have become expert at exploiting the welfare system and in these economic times, that coupled with some pretty inflammatory rhetoric has contributed to the antagonism.

It is interesting that immigrants who come here want to work and get ahead. That's not always the case in Europe.

The USA has a long history of natural integration. Despite much of our troubled past. No it is not 100 percent but I think it's much higher than Germany for example.

Or that PETA will suddenly understand that in order to grow an acre of weat, you have to till the soil-- killing lots of little rabbits, mice, groundhogs, woodchucks, and moles-- and then have to thresh the wheat-- killing lots of rabbits, mice, groundhogs, woodchucks, and moles.

I have no problem with people who want to be vegetarian for health reasons, or to reduce the amount of animal suffering necessary to bring them their meal. But I have very little tolerance for those who think there's no animal suffering involved in raising crops.

A large part of it, a huge part of it, is that we don't have citizenship through blood, but through birth. That law, which so many ignorant fucks want to overturn, is a prime reason the US remains strong, remains a place where people can assimilate, where we can draw strength from cultures while remaining us.

It has to do with our multicultural nature. We are a melange, the proverbial melting pot. There is no discernible typical 'American'.

Europe was and remains a lot more tribal that even she would care to admit. The kind of bigotry we see in Europe now isn't new at all. Europe is just reverting to type.

Post war guilt and the influx of refugees hasn't changed that.

Right. Anyone that comes to the USA and becomes a citizen becomes an American. Race, previous nationality, etc. does not become the primary identity.

re: #100 Walter L. Newton

Well, the Japanese-American Internment was far, far worse than the German-American Internment. For one thing, German-American's weren't rounded up en-masse, but cases were prosecuted individually-- unfairly, with scant attention to due process. If you want to make a case for the government acting terribly to an ethnic group, it's far better to use the Japanese-Americans as an example.

I mean, hell, German-American internement in total was less than 12,000-- the German-American Bund had about twenty-five thousand members, and eight thousand Sturmabteilungen -- 'storm troopers'.

In contrast, 110,000 Japanese-Americans were interned, including nearly all the Japanese-Americans on the West Coast. They were interned en-masse, not in individual cases.

The German-American internment definitely went too far, ignored due process, and is abhorrent; however, it completely pales in comparison to the Japanese-American internment.

However, I'm not quite sure you got my point; the US has done any number of terrible things in the past, including internment, but by "It Can Happen Here", I was referring to a small but nutty subsection of the population being stirred up, agitating against, and committing violence based on fascist ideology.

The language of our prayers imagines God as judge and king, sitting in the divine court on the divine throne of justice, reviewing our deeds. On a table before God lies a large book with many pages, as many pages as there are people in the world. Each of us has a page dedicated just to us. Written on that page, by our own hand, in our own writing, are all the things we have done during the past year. God considers those things, weighs the good against the bad, and then, as the prayers declare, decides "who shall live and who shall die."

Most Tea Partiers call America a Christian nation

Members of the Tea Party movement tend to be Christian conservatives, not libertarians, and are more likely than even white evangelical Christians to say the United States is a Christian nation, a detailed new study has found.

More than half of self-identified Tea Party members say America is a Christian nation, while just over four out of 10 white evangelicals believe that - the same as the proportion of the general population that says so.

"We found actually that among the Tea Party, rather than being libertarians, at least on the issues of abortion and same-sex marriage, they're actually social conservatives," the survey's lead author, Robert Jones, said Tuesday.

Despite the headlines the Tea Party movement has generated with their candidates upsetting mainstream Republican candidates in primary races from Delaware to Nevada, it is only half the size of the Christian conservative movement, Jones said.

Jesus.
Does this POS think that the women is supposed to thank him personally for being allowed to succeed.
Ass.

Of course the reason she is discussing Jim Crow South is because she has a new book out that is about her family and growing up in the South during the Jim Crow era.

It really is time for the Tea Party folks to admit that they are just a new branch of social conservatives.

Why is it these pillars of enlightenment, like Geller and Spencer, are never expected to know anything about the groups they're cozy with? I don't understand how, on one hand they pretend to be intellectuals and represent themselves as all-knowing, and on the other they can't summon the slightest bit of intellectual curiosity. It's like the wingnuts running away from interviews, because they don't want to actually be accountable for the crazy shit that comes out their mouth.

Geller and Spencer like Euroklukkers. It's that simple. They like them because they admire them and agree with them. They don't have the balls to say so, but that's what comes out in the wash.

Merkel went on to say that immigrants living in Germany needed to do more to integrate, including learning to speak German. "Anyone who does not immediately speak German", she said, "is not welcome".

It would be hard to make the position of Roma in Europe worse. I have always been very worried about Europe's ability to assimilate or even accommodate immigrants because they have not in the least managed to assimilate the Roma population, or to engage in any sort of reasonable policy with them. Instead, they ghettoize and brutalize them, enacting punitive taxes on them and not investigating their murders, and then are shocked with the Roma don't trust the police and tend towards petty crime.

I sincerely believe that no nation without birthright citizenship can stand the test of time without eventually falling to fascism, or without simply ending immigration.

[...]

Born Margherita Grassini, the daughter of a wealthy Jewish lawyer, she grew up in a palazzo situated at the Canale Grande in Venice and was educated by private tutors. However, she was soon attracted by socialist ideas and escaped her parents' home at age 18 by marrying Cesare Sarfatti, a lawyer from Padua many years her senior. In 1902 the couple moved to Milan.

In 1911 Margherita Sarfatti met, and started an affair with, Benito Mussolini. As a highly educated and intellectual woman, she played a significant role in the rise of fascism, only to be discarded when her lover turned to anti-Semitism, unable to credit a Jewish woman as his collaborator in the forging of a new ideology. In 1938, Sarfatti left Italy for Argentina and Uruguay; she worked as a journalist in Montevideo.[1] After the war, in 1947, Sarfatti returned to her home country and once again became an influential force in Italian art.

Fascism was not inherently anti-Semitic, but when Mussolini's conquest of Abyssinia drew opprobrium from the League of Nations, he found solace only from Hitler and the like-minded. To curry favour with Hitler, the race laws were passed in 1938 and Sarfatti necessarily had to leave Mussolini's bed.

Seehofer tells youth wing multiculturalism is dead

“We as the (Christian Democratic) Union stand for the dominant German culture and against multiculturalism – multiculturalism is dead,” he said according to news magazine Der Spiegel.

Speaking at the Junge Union national meeting in Potsdam, Seehofer’s latest attack on the idea of Germany being a country of immigration followed his recent call to stop Turks and Arabs from moving to Germany.

Yet he said his speech was not a lurch to the right, rather an attempt to "stop the right-wing loonies," he said, adding that "political seducers" must be deterred from parliament by addressing the concerns of voters.

Those who wanted to live in Germany had to be prepared to accept the daily culture of the country, he said, although did not specify how this should be defined.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was more moderate, Der Spiegel reported, but seemed to echo some of Seehofer’s sentiment when she said, “We feel bound to the Christian image of humanity, that is what defines us,” she said. Those who do not accept this, “are in the wrong place here.”

re: #196 Gus 802

Continues.

Germans should also talk about their values and their increasing alienation from religion, in order to affirm their sense of country and society, she added.

Regarding the idea of allowing highly-qualified people to come to Germany to fill the skills deficit, Seehofer said the emphasis should initially be on training unemployed people here before bringing people into the country.

Germany should not become the “social security office for the whole world,” he said.

Young members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), should know what the parties stood for, he added.

One should not have to “constantly apologise for having a love for one's own country,” he said, adding there was every reason to be proud of Germany.

Philipp Mißfelder, who was elected to chair the youth organisation on Friday, welcomed Seehofer’s comments on immigration.

Mißfelder said it was the job of the CSU to regain sovereignty over the popular debate. He said there should never be a democratically legitimate power to the political right of the union. “The guarantee for that in Germany is and remains, the CSU,” he said.

Seehofer was again criticised by the Central Council of Jews in Germany for his comments.

“All possible cultural circles are being stigmatised, defamed and tarred with the same brush. I find it on the one hand irresponsible and on the other, shabby,” said Stephan Kramer, secretary general of the Council.

He said the current debate on integration of migrants and immigration was making people feel uneasy and scared.

There's been more than a few Paulbots who are quite angry with the socon infiltration and takeover. They are not happy with the new direction.

The Pauls are socons. If the bots aren't, they've been fooled, and should be pissed, and I will laugh.

re: #191 SanFranciscoZionist

It makes me very skeptical of how sad many Europeans really are about the Shoah, when I see how they continue to justify their hated of another ethnic minority like the Roma.

Madonna got booed in Bucharest when she called the audience out about how Romanian Roma are treated.

The northern Italians of a decade ago had a schizo attitude towards the Zingare. They recognized the evil done to them, even if milder, in Mussolini's era. At the same time the seasonal migrations were herded to familiar caravan sites with a strong police presence. My neighbor explained it: We protect ourselves from them, and them from us".

What an insane piece of crap. The Christian image of humanity. Maybe, just maybe it's better in the original German, but that is quite close to race talk.

Berlin was just getting to have a vibrant Jewish community again. Now I hope they all get out. Get out right now. And I hope any prominent Jewish businessman avoids doing business with Germany wherever they can.

Of course, that would just be seen as proof of the evil of the Jew. They hate us but by god they want Jewish money.

As a German Jew, I am concerned. However, I would encourage everyone to take anything written about the supposed rise of xenophobia in Germany with a massive grain of salt. Sensationalist headlines on this topic have been used to sell newspapers around the world almost since the end of the war. Meanwhile, the far right political party (NDP) got a total of 1.5% of the vote in last year's national election. Compare this with the performance of far right parties in virtually every other country in Europe.
