Guys, the whole idea of voter suppression is to stop people from voting *without* anyone realising you’re doing it. Taking out ads kinda defeats the purpose.

Incredibly cynical coming from a Republican organization.

The funny thing is, this will probably sway no one. The fact that Democrats aren’t actively seeking to put hispanics into concentration camps is probably good enough for most sensible moderate hispanic voters. Also, latino Supreme Court appointment is a feather in the cap of the Democrats.

The fact of the matter is, Democrats don’t make blaming hispanics for all of Americas problems a primary focus of their platform. Republicans lose.

Now is the time for Latinos to decide what role they will play in America’s future and what we want politically. If we sit idly by and vote for the same lawmakers that ignore us once in office, we will just get more of the same. If, however, we don’t vote for these politicians, then we will command the attention and respect of both sides of the aisle.

This is the only way to make them stop taking us for granted.

I strongly disagree. Poor white people have no reason to vote R but they do in droves for reasons they don’t quite understand either. Like I said above, this only has to nudge the needle to be monstrously effective.

For lots of reason. One being that the only Latinos the GOP ever made a strong connection with was the expatriated Castro deranged Cuban-Americans. But those days are quickly disappearing and was only a regional phenomenon. Another thing being that immigration isn’t exactly the number one priority for all Latinos/Hispanics/etc. That in itself is a bit of an insult.

Ben Smith at Politico has more.

Anti-Reid group to Hispanic voters: ‘Don’t Vote’

A new group is airing an ad in Nevada telling Hispanic voters not to vote.

The president of Latinos for Reform, Robert Desposada, is a conservative political consultant and political analyst for Univision, but he said the ad is a sincere effort to express Hispanic frustration with the Democrats failure to deliver on immigration reform.

“”We’re saying what a lot of people are feeling. “It’s the only way for Hispanics to stand up and demand some attention,” Desposada said, adding that he also couldn’t ask voters to support Sharon Angle.

“I can’t ask people to support a Republican canddiate who has taken a completely irreponsible and bordering on racist position on immigration,” he said.

“Don’t vote this November. This is the only way to send them a clear message,” says the ad’s narrator of Democrats. “You can no longer take us for granted.”

The initial buy, he said, is $80,000 on Univision, starting tomorrow. The ad in Spanish is above. A translated version, which isn’t airing, is below.

At the same time, some felons who should not have been allowed to vote slipped through and cast ballots.

Here’s something from the group themselves…

Latinos for Reform is headed by Robert Deposada, a political consultant and former director of Hispanic affairs for the Republican National Committee. The group posted an English-language version of the commercial on its website.

Deposada told Politico the ad was born from frustration with the Democrats’ failure to deliver immigration reform. The ad will air in targeted states that Deposada said includes Nevada.

Deposada told Politico he could not ask Hispanics to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, either. He said her position on immigration is “completely irresponsible.”

The “don’t vote” ad would not be the first provocative message delivered by Latinos for Reform. In 2008 it aired ads charging that Obama would put African Americans before Latinos.

It’s all about money.

In 2001, President Bush appointed Deposada to a commission to advance the administration’s plan for privatizing Social Security.

They had a radio ad out in 2008.

re: #75 Walter L. Newton

Deposada told Politico he could not ask Hispanics to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, either. He said her position on immigration is “completely irresponsible.”

I’m sorry, Walter, but sitting out elections to make a political point is futile and harmful to the American body politic. If it comes down to Obama v. Palin in ‘12, I’ll pull the lever for Obama, even though I’m nominally still a Republican. Why? Because, to this point Obama’s not done anything that would justify me voting for Palin, short of me having a lobotomy.

I vote for the person, not the party…

re: #76 Dark_Falcon

That’s supposition. Also remember that the attempt to purge felons came months before the election. No one knew how close it would be. And of course, there were the famous hanging chads, the Broward County Butterfly ballot (created by Democrats). Any attempt to ascribe Florida 2000 to Republican fraud is in correct and dishonest.

sure, it’s just an unfortunate coincidence that the crap machines with high spoilage rates all went to majority black precincts, and black voters’ ballots were 10 times more likely than white voters’ ballots to go uncouncted. And that it was the R’s who sued to prevent a hand count.

Another wacky coincidence: “African American voters were placed on purge lists more often and more erroneously than Hispanic or white voters. For instance, in the state’s largest county, Miami-Dade, more than 65 percent of the names on the purge list were African Americans, who represented only 20.4 percent of the population. Hispanics were 57.4 percent of the population, but only 16.6 percent of the purge list; whites were 77.6 percent of the population but 17.6 percent of those purged.”

And this happened, by coincidence, to occur in the state where the governor was the candidate’s brother, and the secretary of state was the candidates’ campaign chair. And the company doing the voting roll purge got a multi-million dollar federal contract the next year. Nothing appearance of conflict there at all, no sir.

More Astroturf:

Special Report — Astroturf Overload – Broadband for America = One Giant Industry Front Group
………………………….
The Latino Coalition left a lot of heads scratching in 2007 when it advocated against bans on exclusive cable providers in rental properties. Consumers moved into apartment buildings and found they had to take whatever the landlord made available — no satellite TV or competing providers allowed. Consumer groups howled demanding these exclusive agreements be banished to give consumers choices for subscription television. The Latino Coalition told the Los Angeles Times that was a bad idea, and anti-consumer.

The Latino Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy group, warned the FCC that prohibiting exclusive contracts could leave minority and low-income residents with higher bills or no service at all.

“The advantages of these exclusive contracts are important selling points for apartment buildings in urban neighborhoods where residents wouldn’t otherwise have the ability to negotiate the best price for cable TV or broadband services,” Latino Coalition President Robert G. de Posada wrote to the FCC.

It comes as no surprise de Posada also opposed Net Neutrality. He criticized the concept passionately, telling EbonyJet magazine in 2007 it represented “over regulation of the Internet.” Net Neutrality would, according to de Posada, “stifle rather than facilitate entrepreneurism.”

Among the Coalition’s corporate partners: AT&T and Verizon. The former’s logo appears at the bottom corner of the The Latino Coalition home page.

You get the idea. No other information available but guess what? Latinos for Reform’s PO box 26366 in Alexandria, Virginia has been shared by a whole series of right-wing PACs: American Spirit Fund, Virginia Liberty Fund, Storm Chasers, and American Liberty PAC — all with the same treasurer, Susan Arceneaux, a well-connected member of the Republican Party and a long-time aide to Rep. Dick Armey. Remember the infamous Swift Boat Veterans for Truth? Ms. Arceneaux was also associated with them and the now-defunct Admiral Roy F. Hoffmann Foundation, which just happens to have the same address and PO box as Ms. Arceneaux’s collection of PACs and as Latinos for Reform, gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to Swift Boat Vets. Would you trust any group using that PO box number to be objective and concerned about your interests?

Susan Arceneaux
From SourceWatch
Jump to: navigation, search

Susan Arceneaux, a resident of Fairfax, Virginia, is a well-connected member of the Republican Party: Arceneaux is a “long time aide of Dick Armey, a former Congressman from Texas and a close friend of Bush Jr. Arceneaux also is tied in with a number of other Republican groups close to Bush Jr. NY Times 8/24/04).” [1]

Her known roles, both past and present, include the following:

* Administrative contact for Political Compliance Services Inc., according to its WHOIS database entry [2]. Note that her involvement with PCS is not given anywhere on its website.
* Treasurer of the Majority Leader’s Fund [3]
* A listed contact for FreedomWorks [4]
* The custodian of records for David Horowitz’s defunct 527 committee, PoliticalWar.com Inc. [5] [6]
* A contributor to the New Birth of Freedom PAC, according to IRS records posted by Center for Public Integrity
* An employee of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Arceneaux helped to set it up, and is given as the contact person on its post office box. [7][8]

* “The group described Ms. Arceneaux’s role, also, as ‘compliance.’ … Records also list Ms. Arceneaux as treasurer of the Majority Leader’s Fund, a political action committee affiliated with the former House majority leader, Dick Armey of Texas, which like the Swift Boat Veterans received significant financing from Bob Perry, a Texan who has long supported Mr. Bush.” [9]

Arceneaux’s involvement in SBVT did not become known until late August 2004, at the height of the controversy generated by the group’s attack on presidential candidate John Kerry.

Though, truth be told, if it’s a choice between KFC and Popeye’s, I’m gonna take the Popeye’s…gimme some of their spicy chicken with some red beans and rice, cole slaw, and a biscuit.

Popeye’s is too far away, and the chicken would be cold before I got it home. No one makes cole slaw like KFC. We have a Church’s Chicken here……… maybe I should check it out.

God yes. Popeye’s > KFC. Period.

I’d substitute green beans for the cole slaw, but other than that, I’m right there with you.

No Popeye’s cole slaw? I’ve found it’s among the best out of the national/superregional chicken chains I’ve tried…goes well with the spicy chicken and the red beans and rice.

Ok… I wanted to see some Latina anger but I have enough around here.

Oh, the anger’s there. I’m just not in the mood to get all ranty since I still have a lot of reading in my immediate future.

We all speak English in the house except when things get dicey… then it goes right over to Spanish.

Haha. Sounds just like my family. My boyfriend’s about as white as you can get (half-Polish, half-German), so I don’t bust out the Spanish with him, but I’ve definitely built up some good rants among friends and family. LOL!

Funny thing… I’ve spent a fortune over the years on keyboards… I’ve owned them all, from your classic Hammond B3, to Italian electronic organs, synths, electric piano’s… the works… just a few years ago, I sold my last professional keyboard, a Hammond-Suzuki X3…

And a month ago, I bought a Ipod Touch 2nd generation… on sale, Staples was making room for the new 4g Touch… so I finally bought an Apple product…

And I found an app… called the Pocket Organ C3B3, for a 1.99, which simulates a Hammond B3 organ… the whole machine… a two dollar app on a handheld device sounding like a 12 thousand dollar set up…

See this video of the app developers two products Pocket Organ and Pocket Guitar…

Well, it’s “compulsory” in that you have to turn up to the voting place and get your name signed off. But you can then walk straight out if you so choose.

I think not turning up at all (without an acceptable excuse) carries a hundred dollar fine, or something like that.

Well, there are certain advantages too. Ideally, it forces people to think about issues which matter to them, be more involved in the political process. And campaign ads aren’t nearly as hysterical as many seem to be in your country, in that voters don’t need to be convinced, through fear-mongering, to go out and vote in the first place.

On the other hand, political apathy/disaffection can have more of an effect here. If people don’t want to vote for the major parties, then minor fringe parties like One Nation - a borderline racist anti-immigration party - can get in. The Greens are enjoying that at the moment, although I don’t think they’re nearly as crazy as One Nation was. Ugh.

It is often suggested that doing ridiculous things like having forks in the hair or Vegemite or toothpaste spread behind the ears will deter the creatures,[3] or that walking through the bush carrying a screwdriver raised above one’s head will impale an attacking drop bear.

Shit… Vegemite behind your ears will make you go deaf and dumb.

Just going through spring now, and in all seriousness, the Magpie’s swoop you when they have young in their nests.

Fuckin vicious…

I believe they call it fossicking.

Yes… I forgot that term… I work opal… I have a small stock of some gem quality and some more common opal with less color then the gemy stuff… about 10-12 years ago, when the miners in Au. got a hold of the internet… they started to sell direct around the world, and by passing the brokers… and the prices were wonderful… but like all markets… things stabilize, adjust… now the miners have a better idea what the market can bear, and the prices are much higher… not as high as going through brokers, but much higher than when I got most of my stock years ago… just a little left now…

I did indeed, I was playing in bands in pubs when they had their fame.

I remember when the singer Shirley Strachan was a apprentice carpenter, he worked at the local bank fitting it out, must have been about 1972

Sadly Shirley died in a helicopter accident.

Actually I am not surprised that someone has finally come out with this ad.
I do not blame them for this ad because they are mad at the politicians for not keeping to their promises and for doing nothing.

In the last 10 to 12 years there were several elections that I thought about not voting. i.e. my vote would not count, politicians will do what they want anyway etc. etc. But I voted anyway.

re: #249 Steve

It is a blatant form of Realpolitik: the Republicans know that they cannot get latinos to vote for them, so they ask them to refrain from voting.

But the arguments are spurious: accusing the Democrats of inaction when the Republicans have done all they can to guarantee legislative inertia.

And encouraging people not to vote makes a mockery of what democracy is about.

Bullshit. It’s blatant astroturfing from DC, and an obvious attempt at voter suppression. They know damned well that the chances of Sharron Angle getting a significant amount of Latino support is basically nil, so keeping them at home and not voting only increases her chances of winning.

They’re not making a legit complaint. It’s a bunch of lobbyists in DC trying to influence the outcome in Nevada. Fuck that.

So let’s see — you think there’s nothing wrong with vast sums of money contributed to Republicans by anonymous donors, and you see nothing wrong with an outright un-American ad telling Latinos they shouldn’t vote.

Is there anything the GOP could do that you’d think wasn’t just peachy?

Univision shuts down ‘Don’t Vote’ ad

The Spanish-language network Univision has refused to air an ad from a GOP-led Hispanic group telling Hispanic voters to sit out the race between Sharron Angle and Harry Reid.

“Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting,” said a spokeswoman for the network, Carolina Valencia, in an email. “Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.”

The network also distanced itself from Robert de Posada, who had sought to air the ad, and has been a conservative commentator on the channel.

“It is also important to clarify that while Mr. Robert de Posada has on occasion provided political commentary on Univision, representing one of various points of views, he is not in any way affiliated with Univision,” Valencia said.

re: #259 wrenchwench

The first tab I opened with that article had some little “typo” stuff at the end:

…De Posada responded that he’d been an on-air analyst on the network for 16 years, and contended that they’d succumbed to Democratic pressure.

“This is what happens when they get a few calls from Nevada,” he said.

De Posada said he’s exploring legal options, but that for now the ad won’t air, as Univision has, practically speaking, a “monopoly” in the market.

They got a little bit of pressure from the Democratic Party and they pulled it off.

I guess 16 yeras being your on-air analyst doesn’t count. It’s so sad — how can they sit here controlling basicaly a monopolsy

It takes a lot to get me to not vote or go third-party in a given race, such as two real a-hole party hacks going at it. I have such a situation right now with my House district—freshman Dem hack who hides behind his kids vs. the old guard Republican hack who had the job for over a decade before 2008, with the bad combover. Looks like a third party “protest vote” for me.

That makes it 1-1-1 for me—Repub for Senate (Portman), Dem for Gov (Strickland), and neither major party for the House.
