The wingnuts are trying to destroy my will to live again. Received today from someone who still uses AOL as an Internet provider:

With your continued ripping of the right wing, noticed a drop-off in traffic? Don’t worry, your left wing buddies will make up the difference, I haven’t been here in 2 months, just thought I’d shoot you a message. Goodnight liberal. Bill

Well, that does it!

I want some traffic!

Evolution is a myth! Hispanics shouldn’t vote! Obama is a Kenyan stealth Muslim Manchurian candidate! Rush Limbaugh is God! War on Christmas! Prayer in schools! Piss Christ! Darwin was a Nazi! Hitler Hitler Hitler! Atheists are genocidal monsters! Global warming is a hoax! Black people have lower IQs! Muslims want to kill us all!

Maybe that’ll do it.

BTW, did anyone here follow up on this story today?

Joe Miller's private "guards" were active-duty military

Was Joe Miller required to bring a security detail to his town hall meeting Sunday at Central Middle School?

That's what Miller, the Republican Senate candidate, told two national cable news networks Monday in the wake of the arrest by his security squad of an online journalist at his public event.

But the school district said there was no such requirement made of Miller . . . "We do not require users to hire security," she said. . . .

Meanwhile, the Army says that two of the guards who assisted in the arrest of the journalist and who tried to prevent two other reporters from filming the detention were active-duty soldiers moonlighting for Miller's security contractor, the Drop Zone, a Spenard surplus store and protection service.

KAMPALA, Uganda -- The front-page newspaper story featured a list of Uganda's 100 "top" homosexuals, with a bright yellow banner across it that read: "Hang Them." Alongside their photos were the men's names and addresses.

In the days since it was published, at least four gay Ugandans on the list have been attacked and many others are in hiding, according to rights activist Julian Onziema. One person named in the story had stones thrown at his house by neighbors.

Check out the flagrant Photoshoping the did utilizing two different photos of Kerry and Fonda. Of course, it's from 2004. The Guardian picked up on it in 2004. Oddly enough it's still being passed around the internet and has become an urban legend -- it is fautograhphy.

Then we have the infamous Kerry service record.

Service Mettle

Claim: John Kerry's Vietnam War service medals (a Bronze Star, a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts) were earned under "fishy" circumstances.

People did not like Kerry, even the folks who supported his candidacy could not warm to him as a person.

So all the poo they flung at him stuck.

It backfired on Obama. Except for frothing moron racists, most folks found Obama an erudite, educated and generally likeable person. The smear campaign against him backfired on the GOP.

Cult of personality. I've seen it happen in work environments who are put into leadership positions. The tradition was to also hire those with height -- i.e. the tall ones. People that are the biggest idiots in the world that know how to manipulate people with their personality can get ahead faster and farther than those that are quiet yet have far more talent and intellect. In a way then it become advancement as through audition were people are chosen not because of their abilities but their ability to act.

Do not forget that in the Middle Ages, members of the nobility were physically larger than the peasants because they were better nourished and did not perform debilitating manual labo(u)r.

Now it is the lower classes who are obese, while the upper classes play tennis.

410 Obdicut  Wed, Oct 20, 2010 3:18:18am

re: #406 ralphieboy

Absolutely correct.

At my old work, I had a coworker who was very bright, hardworking, had a position one step higher in the company than I did. He had tons of great ideas.

He also was about five foot four, and had a somewhat childish appearance and a week, reedy voice due to a hormonal treatment he'd received for Crohns Disease when he was young.

When he really wanted an idea to get listened to, he'd come to me to ask me to promulgate it. I'm six feet tall, and have a very loud, strong voice. He could say the exact same thing at a producer meeting that I'd say the next week, but nobody would listen to him. They'd listen to me.

It is sad-- but, on the other hand, that example also shows humans climbing above animality; he was able to make common cause with me, and 'borrow' my social status in order to get his message out.

Tsongas would have made a great president. But he was penalized, from the start, for being short and having a receding chin.

As we see in some of Obama's speeches, Presidents have to address the nation using approx 10th grade (16 yo language) vocabulary or they just loose half their audience.

GWB tended to use short sentences... when he had complete sentences, that is.

RWR spoke at times with a cadence like he was reciting poetry and used catch phrases with abandon.

And so on. Just don't look to a President for an intellectually stimulating oratory. The speeches are designed to elicit emotion, and particular emotions at that.

Democracy - it is what it is.

Renee Mullins: I’m Renee Mullins. My father was James Byrd, Jr.
I still have nightmares thinking about him, the day three men chained him behind their pickup truck and dragged him three miles over pavement.

I can see skin being torn away from his body.

I can hear him gasping for air.

I can feel the tears in his eyes, the struggle of his brain as images of his life painfully bang through his head as the links of a heavy chain clinched around his ankles dragging him bump by bump until he was decapitated. [pause]

On June 7, 1998 this happened to my father, all because he was black. I went to Governor George W. Bush and begged him to help pass a hate crimes bill.

He just told me no.

I'm doing this commercial to ask you to call Governor Bush at 512-X and tell him to introduce a hate crimes bill in Texas.

Let him know that our community won't be dragged down by hate crimes.

No, it really doesn't. It says nothing about whether the hate crimes bill is a good thing because it would punish the people who did this more severely, or because it would prevent things like this from occurring. Of course, if you believe more severe punishment is a deterrent, then you believe that having higher penalties for hate crimes would reduce the number of hate crimes.

It doesn't even use any emotional language about Bush. It just says he said no, not that he didn't care, or didn't pay attention, or had other priorities, or anything of that sort.

I don't believe it does. It's saying that the men who did it would be treated differently through the legal system and that future cases would be treated differently from "regular crime".

Its about stopping things/changing things down the road. Not blaming Bush for that particular case.

All that being said - i don't think it's a great advert for the case being made, particularly at election time when all it will do is enflame.

Cut the stupid bullshit, Rogue. Most people don't live to 89, it's not nothing to do with me hoping anything. Why on earth you think this kind of sniggering sophomoric asshattery is going to convince anyone of anything, I don't know.

Again: You cited an article about pension costs that turned out to get its scary big numbers from projecting the costs of the pensions out to age 89. Since most people don't live to age 89, this was a dishonest scare tactic.

It makes it very ironic that you're presuming to call other people liars and castigate them for hysterical talking points, while you screech about pension costs using completely ginned up figures and refer to the above NAACP ad as the worst attack ad ever.

That's called a tax "credit" not a tax "cut" and really it was neither. Withholding less during the year equates to nothing if their rates don't change.

There have been zero tax rate reductions. They had a chance to make sure 95% of the public didn't have their rates rise next year and chose not to deal with it just yet.

Bush had an NAACP ad run against him accusing him of being a hate-mongering racist that didn't care if black people were pulled down the street by chains. The most unfair, brutal attack ad ever.

FYI, the ad was paid for by a $10 million secret donation, it could have been paid for by foreigners for all we know. The fact that they still haven't opened their books for us to know who paid for that ad means they obviously have something to hide.

I just have a hard time wrapping my brain around an additional law (hate crimes) making the punishment for dragging a man behind your truck til he dies worse than what was already on the books. I think murder is bad, regardless of the reason.

Distinctions in crime level by motive have always existed. Hence murder1, 2, negligent homicide - etc etc etc.

Frame of mind, circumstance, battered wife syndrome and all sorts of other implications already affect sentencing.

I think the most heinous crimes are those committed by those who think someone just "looks different" and that just because they "look different" that they can get away with treating them/killing them differently under the present law.

I also have a bit of pa problem with that one. If a white gang member kills a black gang menber (or vice versa) over a drug deal gone bad is it drug grime, gang crime or hate crime?

The only thing it could serve as is extra icing on the cake to make the sentence even more severe, but that would be more for assault charges than murder, which is already life sentence in most places.

dKos is reporting the following from the latest Harper's Index this morning:

Net domestic profits earned by U.S. corporations since the fourth quarter of 2008: $609,000,000,000

Net decrease since then in the amount these companies spent on wages and benefits: $171,000,000,000

Further tax cuts for the rich will obviously get people back to work!

All you ever have is false dichotomies. I called it a shitty ad. You say I think it's 'fair game'. You fail.

I think it's a shitty ad because it claims it's an issues ad when it's clearly an anti-Bush ad. However, what it says is true: Byrd did die, and Bush did not favor hate crimes legislation. There was no lie told, not even a lie of omission. Given that not favoring hate crime bills is an actual stance of Bush, I'm really unsure how it's unfair to state that he doesn't.

It is unfair to use the particular details of Byrd's death in an attack on Bush. That sort of emotional appeal is always unfair.

However, you said it was the worst ad ever. It's nowhere even close. And remember, you brought it up because it was funded by a 'secret donation', and everyone you're talking to here agrees that the NAACP should have to make their donors public as well. So your main 'gotcha' was a squib.

Yes, you have constructed another false dichotomy. Well done.

Weird, they spent almost 18 months working on HCR while republicans screamed the entire time and yet they still managed to get it through.

And they'd be able to get the tax cuts for the 95% of people through too-- if they also gave the top 5% the tax cuts as well. Which would be incredibly fiscally irresponsible. Which is what the GOP wants.

Are the Democrats wimpy wimp-wimps with noodly arms? Yes. But the GOP really, really did announce they would block any tax cuts for 95% of people if there wasn't the tax cut for the top 5% in there as well. That actually happened, and it sure would be nice if you got around to acknowledging reality when making your assertions one day.

Gee, I wonder if there's any way that the Republicans can block things for coming to a vote... nah, I can't think of anything at all!

The other factor is that there are plenty of other things that the Senate is trying to get done (like approve some administration people, who are opposed en bloc by the GOP).

They probably figure that playing political football with the tax cut thing isn't worth it, since:

A) the GOP won't let anything happen, and

B) the public at large probably won't understand the distinction between the different types of tax adjustments being debated.

Sure. You consistently attack Democrats and promote Republicans, to the extent that you say that you'd like Reid to lose and Angle to win, but you're not a team player. Completely believable.

Remember, Reid's just as bad as Angle because his statements in support of minority groups are just for show.

New Gingrich kicked the last set of elected Republican "reformers" into line. So I expect the Republican House/Senate leadership to not have that much trouble doing the same to these. They'll be restrained by tradition and the well-grooved tracks of "this is how things are done". And it they get supplied staff there instead of totally bringing their own in then they'll already be at least 50% in leash since the staff has a lot of influence on what materials they actually see, what they get briefed about, and recommendations on what to do and who to see.

The sad thing about that is - they'll just vote with them, against the Dems.
It'll be business as usual.

Why would the insane vote against their party?

I'd say that the Tea Party is a massive voter fraud. It allows the mad wing of the GOP to keep the base. If the split becomes formal - and they work out who will stand where so they never have to split the right wing vote - I think they could be very happy to welcome the nutters.

The new intake lapped it up - and it was supported by their leadership. It's not serious politics - the wider electorate missed it, but stunts like that from the top of the party (embracing Bachmann, et.al) show how un-serious and completely unready they are for governing.

As I said yesterday: Make sure you have C-Span and a 2 year supply of popcorn.

On a more serious note, it occurs to me that the Palinistas and other denizens of Tea Bagistan are making a crucial, but common, mistake. They think that all the newfound grassroots (or astroturf) support they have is somehow the result of a massive buy-in by voters into their political philosophy. It is not. The average voter does not give a rat's ass about theories of government. Most people want to be rewarded for their willingness to work hard and to live in the knowledge that they are secure in life and limb. Many, if not most, of their supposed "base" will abandon the Tea Party Right in droves once it becomes clear that these fruit n' nut cakes can't govern because they themselves don't understand the constitution, economics, or the true nature of foreign affairs, and as a result cannot make us better governed, wealthier, or more secure.

Very few people are going to vote the freaky Right for truly ideological purposes, and only those few will vote for them a second time. The damage done to the Republican Party will be lasting, however, and it will be interesting to see how the middle resurrects itself as a rational political force that the majority of voters can trust to govern rationally.

I'm beginning to think that there is a 10-20% of the populace that is simply going to vote "opposite" to what they consider the reigning party regardless of the candidates/issues/policies/reality. Perennially unhappy with their lot and representatives and thus open to a change simply in the belief that a new face will be better than the entrenched "old face".

A lot was made about the 2008 election being a "backlash". The mid-term elections (like this year) are often a backlash against the party currently holding the White House. And there's a lot of folk here saying that 2012 is lining up to be a backlash against the backlash...

Hmm, 20-30% base for each side, 20% anti-incumbent, and what percentage totally fed up?

Inertia will carry them half of the way there.

The second question is whether these are actual partisans that will push an agenda regardless (e.g. true social conservatives who will bring forth and fight for legislation promoting things such as intelligent design in science classes), or are simply panderers who will mouth the proper platitudes to the base while bellying up to the trough to get campaign contributions from the lobbyists, influence through committee assignments, and all the trappings that come with becoming the new incumbent primarily intent on re-election and skimming a little cream off the side for themselves.

Pelosi's Favorable Rating as Speaker Drops to 29%, a New Low

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's favorable rating is down seven percentage points since May to 29%, a new low for her since assuming the top congressional post.

Pelosi's ratings were 2-to-1 positive, 44% to 22%, when she first assumed the speakership in January 2007, but they became closely divided by March of that year and remained so in November 2008. Views became more negative than positive for the first time in the first half of 2009, possibly because of Pelosi's public stance against the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation" of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay prison, and her dispute with the CIA over whether she had been briefed on the matter. Spanning the period these issues were in the news, her favorable rating fell from 42% to 32%. Pelosi's favorable rating recovered slightly in the first half of 2010 to 36%, but it has since tumbled to the new low.

Way to go Nancy!

My two cents

Evolution is a myth! [false] Evolution is a theory, which means it is not the Divine Truth as revelaed in Holy sScriptures

Hispanics shouldn’t vote!

-Nobody should vote for politicians who betray their interests - in which case, nobody except millionaires and their lobbyists should vote

Obama is a Kenyan stealth Muslim Manchurian candidate!
-"Manchurian Candidate" is a fixed phrase, sort of like a sleeper cell, and after all, foreign is foreign.

Rush Limbaugh is God!
- Many still believe that he is divinely inspired

War on Christmas!
-Christmas was a pagan celebration before it was co-opted by the Christians, retains many of its traits and has become a part of popular culture, only tenuously connected to its religious connotations.

Prayer in schools!
-Is still allowed on an individual basis

Piss Christ!
- If you can show Mohammed with a bomb in his turban, then you can show Christ in a vial of piss. First Amendment and all. Whether taxpayers should fund such dispays is open to debate.

Darwin was a Nazi!
- Some of Darwins's theories were twisted to fit the Nazi ideology. Lots of ideas get twisted to fit idologies

Hitler Hitler Hitler!
-Was a vegetarian, built Autobahns, introduced paid vacations adn package tours...which means they are all evil.

Atheists are genocidal monsters!
- All men are mortal, all deer are mortal, therefore all men are deer....Philosophy 101 fail.

Global warming is a hoax!
- Science is not perfect, but it has proven itself right on numerous occasions and we are foolish to ignore it.

Black people have lower IQs!
-IQ is not an absolute measurement of intelligence, nor is there an "absolute intelligence" to measure against.

Muslims want to kill us all!
- All men are mortal. All goats are mortal, etc...

Nevada's already voting for the Reid-Angle race? I didn't know that they were already doing early vote there.

And is it me, or is the release of voter profiles - breaking out the percentage of GOP to Democrat voters as a sign of enthusiasm and trend information - this early a way to shape and affect the voting in coming days and leading up to election day?

Besides, what if some major news event were to break before the election that shapes the vote in a profound way (more than the stuff that is already out there showing that Angle is a loon). Once you've voted, you can't take back that vote, no matter how much you may come to regret it.

Touting her “tough, bottom-line business executive” motto, Wallace pointed out that Fiorina also wants “to extend all, all the Bush tax cuts which would add $4 trillion dollars to the deficit...where are you going to find $4 trillion dollars to cut?” But when Fiorina retreated to recycled response of government waste and an earmarks ban, a frustrated Wallace begged Fiorina seven times to “name one single entitlement expenditure you’re willing to cut” because “that’s where the money is.” Fiorina’s only response? “You’re asking a typical political question."

In fact, it is a riff on the same issue with releasing information about exit polling on election day in states like Florida, TN and others that have multiple time zones. You get results in one part of the state that can affect turnout elsewhere in the state.

You can affect turnout later in the campaign with information about who's turned out already. And both parties can use that information to GOTV - targeting specific demographics and areas.

Considering that many people don't make a decision on who they vote for until before election day, reporting on turnout in drawn out election schemes can shape the outcome.

You are making two simultaneous arguments:

1. Reporting on the results of early voting can have an effect.

This is true, but trivial. So can reporting on polling. I fail to see why this is something to get ones dander up, except in the case where the results are not favorable to the party one supports. This is what humans are; we are influenced by what each other do. If you're saying that people should be forbidden from having the information about how others, as a group, have voted, there's an argument to be made for that but it would face severe first amendment challenges. I don't think it would survive such.

2. People should wait until the last minute to vote in case some new information arises.

I still think this is a terrible, terrible position, for the reasons I've cited above. The media is not a responsible organ of information dissemination, and the long exposure time of candidates really should mean that what's worth knowing about them is exposed well before the election, as well as verified and fact-checked. A last-minute scandal doesn't have time to actually get thoroughly explored, and so it tends to favor those spending shitloads of money on negative ads. I don't think that's a good way to vote, influenced by last-minute scandal and rumor. I'm curious as to why you do.

True but trivial? That's an assertion - not an argument. How about some facts to back that one up.

If you're looking at fairness in elections and avoiding distorting election outcomes, you would want the same effect in play regardless of who's ahead or not (which is to say preventing information like exit polling or snapshots of voters from affecting the outcome).

What about a scandal that comes out two weeks before the close of the elections, one week before the close of the elections... how much time is "totally explored" for you? Wouldn't that depend on the nature of the scandal? What if the scandal was generated by some actual legal indictment, from state or federal law enforcement agencies, not just spurious negative campaign ads by the opposition?

I could see a number of scenarios where some information comes out at the last minute and that information is reliable and straightforward enough for a voter to make a last minute adjustment in supporting or not supporting a candidate.

You can't?

So I had this girlfriend in Moscow in the early 90's, Natasha. Alcoholic, nymphomaniac, chain-smoking, burningly patriotic, with intense green eyes and a degree in chemistry from the Mendeleyev Institue (The Russian equivalent of MIT or Cal Tech).

A figure right out of an espionage novel.

She tells me that she had worked as an English interpreter for the 1980 Olympics, which brought her into contact with the KGB, who hired her to "gather intelligence".

Told me that her bosses dressed her up in a black evening dress and a diamond necklace (which she had to sign for) and put her in an Intourist bar, where she was instructed to approach a group of "international drug smugglers" and to obtain information from them - using all means at her disposa, of coursel.

She says she was young and naive and could not force herself to go through with it, handed in her dress and jewels and quit the job.

If that is true, we can only be thankful, because if this lady had continued in her job, would certainly have gotten stealth technology, Pershing missile secrets and a complete set of access codes to the Pentagon computers out of us.

VA textbook criticized over claims on black Confederate soldiers

A textbook distributed to Virginia fourth-graders says that thousands of African Americans fought for the South during the Civil War -- a claim rejected by most historians but often made by groups seeking to play down slavery's role as a cause of the conflict.

[...]

The Sons of Confederate Veterans also disputes the widely accepted conclusion that the struggle over slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. Instead, the group says, the war was fought "to preserve their homes and livelihood," according to John Sawyer, chief of staff of the Sons of Confederate Veterans' Army of Northern Virginia. He said the group was pleased that a state textbook accepted some of its views.

[...]

When Masoff began work on the textbook, she said she consulted a variety of sources -- history books, experts and the Internet. But when it came to one of the Civil War's most controversial themes -- the role of African Americans in the Confederacy -- she relied primarily on an Internet search.

You were arguing that people should wait to vote, weren't you? How did I misunderstood what you were saying by:

You don't think that some bit of information might come out in the next two weeks that might affect someone who is on the fence.

It's a problem I have with early voting generally.

True but trivial? That's an assertion - not an argument. How about some facts to back that one up.

Heh. Are you asking me to back up that it's true? I figured I didn't need to, given that I was agreeing with your assertion. That it's trivial I did support through argument there-- citing that polling also influences votes, and that there would be no way to stop people being influenced by early voting other than restricting first amendment rights. Unless, of course, you're advocating getting rid of early voting, which will have the effect of disenfranchising some voters.

Can you explain what assertion you want me to back up?

If you're looking at fairness in elections and avoiding distorting election outcomes, you would want the same effect in play regardless of who's ahead or not (which is to say preventing information like exit polling or snapshots of voters from affecting the outcome).

Sure. But that has little to do with the price of fish. If you want voters to have information restricted, why is it just the information about who has gotten a higher percentage of early votes, or exit polling, restricted? Why is that a special category? Why not, say, the party allegiance be restricted as well, so that the voter has to make their choice based on actual knowledge, not on party?

And again: You keep vacillating between whether you have a problem with early voting, or with reporting on early voting. These are very, very separate issues.

Yeah, there were a lot of African-Americans embedded in Confederate units, because they had to wait on their owners.

A group of "Gens Libre de Coleur" (Free Colored Men) in New Orleans volunteered for the Confederacy very early in the war (Frederick Douglass mentioned them) but they were rejected, subsequently became a Union regiment after Louisiana was captured by the Federals in 1862.

I have voted for both in the past - we have had a number of decent Republicans here over the years (Congressman Steve Gunderson, Governor Lee S. Dreyfus). By the same token, when there has been no one worth the office, I've voted Green as well. I'm tempted this year in the governor's race though the Democrat is probably sufficiently less bad than the Republican.

Despite being a real card carrying Socialist (DSA-USA.org) I do try to vote for the person I belive will do a better job rather than on the basis of party alone. This is not to say that I haven't voted a straight party ticket but that I certainly have not done so every time.

Blast in southern Gaza injures 13 Palestinians

An explosion rocked a building owned by the Hamas security forces in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday injuring 13 people, medics and witnesses said.

Five children and three women were among the casualties from the blast in Tal al-Sultan near the sprawling town of Rafah on the Egyptian border, medics said.

Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion which shattered the windows of many surrounding houses.

Security officials in the Hamas-run territory had no immediate comment on the cause of the blast.

In a separate incident, Gaza-based militants fired two mortar rounds into southern Israel without causing any casualties or damage, a military statement said.

But Lillian McEwen, a former Senate Judiciary Committee lawyer who said she dated Clarence Thomas from 1979 through the mid-1980s, told The Washington Post in an interview that Hill's long-ago description of Thomas's behavior resonated with her.

"The Clarence I know was certainly capable not only of doing the things that Anita Hill said he did, but it would be totally consistent with the way he lived his personal life then," said McEwen, who is writing her own memoir but has never before publicly discussed her relationship with Clarence Thomas.

I use to really like this site and the positions that were espoused here about the dangers of radical Islamist as well as the defense of our best and only true ally in the middle east, Israel.

I am an evangelical (I believe in the Bible- I believe in a personal relationship with the Creator) Christian. I do however, believe in evolution. I really like Sarah Palin & Rush Limbaugh. I believe that the president was born in Hawaii and I don't believe that he is a Manchurian candidate I have many friends who are liberals (progressives). I have friends who are gay.

Now it seems that the focus of LGF is primarily toward Republicans who what to brain wash kids into Christianity- teach only creationism and abstinence and tell all kids that homosexuals are evil. None of these are good, I grant you- but you are missing the real problem that we all as Americans are facing.

What I don't understand is how thinking people can go forward in this economic and political climate and not realize that something in Washington has to change and change dramatically. Even though the President is not foreign born nor a Muslim- he is in fact the most liberal person ever to hold the office. In 21 months in office with a Democrat congress our country has run a deficit of $3 trillion dollars. That is 25% of all of the debt in the history of the country. That is $10,000 for every man woman and child in this country.

The last year that GW Bush was president with a Republican congress the budget deficit was $255 billion (I know that did not include war spending but even with that it was under $400 billion). The following years the deficit has been $550 billion, 675 billion, 1.1 trillion, 1.3 trillion. The stimulus and other budget bills increased discretionary domestic spending by 13-15% across the board. This is the new base line. We are poised to have the largest tax increase in history on January and the Fed is now buying up to $100 Billion in treasury bonds per month. With the roll back of the estate tax and the inflation of the last 8 years there are middle class folks in the northeast and on the west coast who will if they have any savings at all and there modest home is paid for will qualify for the estate tax on their death (55% on anything over $1 million).

This is insane! I know that Christine O'Donnell is a goofy inexperienced politician but I would rather have her voting than everyone of the Democrat senators and all but a hand full of Republican Senators, because I believe that she gets the economic peril that we face.

It would be great to see some of the very clever pontificators on this site to throw some comments toward the real issue of the day- the increasingly inevitable bankruptcy of this country. Because when it happens it won't matter if you are a Bible thumping, homosexual hating, creationist or a progressive gay atheist we will all be hurting and our public square of discourse will be far less free because we will be less free-

Prosperity breeds freedom, at least I believe it does. Huge national debt retards prosperity.

First of all, it's understandable that maybe Charles doesn't post exactly what you want him to. But it's confusing why you think he should. Why not make your own blog where you talk about the issues you think are more important? Why ask him to do so?

We are poised to have the largest tax increase in history on January

Well, no. We are not poised to do any such thing. What is most likely is that the GOP, who announced they'd block any sort of extension for the tax cuts on 95% of the population unless the top 5% was extend to, will win the battle and that the taxes will be extended for everyone.

Furthermore, you are simultaneously talking about an out-of-control deficit and complaining about high taxes; this is rather fiscally contradictory.

This is insane! I know that Christine O'Donnell is a goofy inexperienced politician but I would rather have her voting than everyone of the Democrat senators and all but a hand full of Republican Senators, because I believe that she gets the economic peril that we face.

Why do you believe that, though? You realize you haven't given any actual reason, right?

With the roll back of the estate tax and the inflation of the last 8 years there are middle class folks in the northeast and on the west coast who will if they have any savings at all and there modest home is paid for will qualify for the estate tax on their death (55% on anything over $1 million).

Um, yeah. How many people do you think actually own homes that are worth close to a million?

Prosperity breeds freedom, at least I believe it does.

There was a huge amount of prosperity in the United States when child labor was allowed, when company scrip was paid to workers who were forced to buy items at the company store, and when pinkertons shot striking workers. Do you think things were free back then? Do you think that labor rights represent any sort of freedom, or do you think child labor represents more freedom?

Each one of these people has expressed, explicity, their desire to impose their agendas on our country. This, right after you claim to not be anything like that.

Let me guess, you watch Glenn Beck because he's entertaining?

No, I can't think of any rational conservatives in the spotlight right now, and I don't know of any. In fact, the party platform reads like stereo instructions on how to build "crazy." It's because of people like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, and O'Donnell, among dozens of others, the GOP is dead to me.

Even though he is liberal and I tend to disagree with his positions I'd vote for him over O'Donnell every time unless he shows the same level of inept critical thinking, xenophobia, and theocratic leanings much less serious character flaws.

You'd still vote for O'Donnell over Franken just because she 'gets it' about debt. That is clearly the ends justifying the means, the ends being conservatism and nothing else.

O'Donnell is not just ditsy on some issues, she's a serious problem along with the rest of them. I've voted Red for 20 years but at this point I'd vote liberals up and down the board over O'Donnell/Angle/Palin all fucking day.

I am not asking Charles to do anything- I really enjoy many posts-

Regarding your last point:

"There was a huge amount of prosperity in the United States when child labor was allowed, when company scrip was paid to workers who were forced to buy items at the company store, and when pinkertons shot striking workers. Do you think things were free back then? Do you think that labor rights represent any sort of freedom, or do you think child labor represents more freedom?"

I don't necessarily believe that to be true, however, at least in this country until the last couple of generations each generation was marginally better off than the previous. This accounting for increased education and life expectancy.

To quote President Kennedy "a rising tide lifts all boats." The economy is not a zero sum game. Rather it is dynamic and on the whole as the rich getting richer the poor get richer too.

Interesting. In that case, how do you explain the past 30 years, during which middle class income has flatlined while the top 5% of earners have been massively enriched?

Specifically, how do you explain that with particular reference to the fact that economic policy shifted markedly to the right in that period?

If that were true. This last decade the rich have been getting richer on the backs of stagnating or backfalling poor and middle class. This is not some esoteric number game. It's pretty damn clear your wishful claim is simply not true - and it is not true in no small part because of the fiscal policies of the people you'd like to see back in power.

My response: Tax policy in the US has reached a point where nearly 50% of all wage earners pay no income tax. (I understand that these folks still pay payroll taxes and this tax is highly regressive.) The folks at the bottom 20% pay less than 4% of their total income on income and payroll taxes combined because of the earned income tax credit which is really a wealth transfer vehicle.

The top 1% of wage earners pay 21% of federal income taxes.
The top 5% of wage earners pay 35% of federal income taxes.
The top 10% of wage earners pay 45% of federal income taxes.
The top 20% of wage earners pay 59% of federal income taxes.

The top 20% earn at least $91,202-

To me the problem with the statement the 'rich' don't pay their fair share is what is their fair share? What is going to happen when more than 50% of our citizenry pay no income taxes? They will be able to vote for politicians who will vote to take an even higher % of the 'rich' income. All of this not withstanding the question: Who do the not rich work for and how are they going to be able to keep their jobs when their 'rich' business owner boss is out of business because it is not profitable?

According to statistics released by the IRS for 2007 the most recent year- we could completely confiscate all income of individuals earing over $1 million dollars and it would not be sufficient to balance the budget this year- (Approx. 390,000 returns and less than $1.4 trillion in adjusted gross income- remember they have already paid 35% of that in federal income taxes).

Lets go further we could confiscate all income of folks with an adjusted gross income of $500,000 and over and still not balance the budget- (just over 1 million returns and an a total income of $1.8 trillion). The $1.15 trillion left after they pay their 35% in taxes will not cover this year's $1.4 trillion budget deficit!

What we have is a spending problem not a tax problem.

I don't believe that there was 'a lot' of prosperity in the late 1800 and early 1900s. There were a few very rich but not nearly as many upper class earners as we have today.

However, even then there was opportunity here, that is why so many fled the Europe for a better life.

re: #619 nc gray

Prosperity breeds freedom?

Then explain countries like Dubai and Saudi Arabia....

Why does the number of high income earners matter?

And if it does, shouldn't you be more concerned about fewer and fewer people earning more and more, and the middle class earning less and less, over the past twenty years?

Yet, your concern is somehow for the taxes on the people on the top.

You contradict yourself. A lot.

661 NC Gray  Wed, Oct 20, 2010 4:11:58pm

re: #660 Obdicut

That is just false. In a growing economy (one where the actual GDP growth exceeds the rate of inflation) the # of high income earners do increase. But I do get your point that individually this doesn't matter much. The US like no other place has individuals who have 'made it big' and 'lost it all' and did it again.

We, in this country, live in a true land flowing with milk and honey- if not why does everyone else in the world seek the opportunity to come here first?

And I don't contradict myself- if you think so speak specifically please!

I'll respect Bill Gates, and similar people who made their fortunes but those who got where they are through hand me downs... why should they have a right to keep so much of what fortune gave them, what did they do to earn it?

I support a higher "death tax" for that reason.

no i am fine with income tax but the rate that any individual pays is not determined by how much someone makes!

I once was a fairly good basketball player. I played with more than a few really good basketball players. The best of the best of those played in the NBA- The difference between them and me was as different as I am to an Australian Aboriginal- (I am a white 5'9" guy who at his prime weighed 180 lbs. I could touch the rim but not dunk- I could shoot but on on a streak.)

I am ok at golf- My best round ever is 79- I have played golf with some Senior Tour players the difference between my ability and theirs is greater than the difference in my basketball ability!

If you have talent that deserves some reward- There is a difference of ability in everything- There is nothing that government can do equalize this.

You doubt me? Watch MSNBC some early Saturday or Sunday morning- the show is called 'Locked Up'. In prison some inmates have ability- strength, money or gang connections, but for whatever reason they have it-

The way things are now are getting more like Locked up because it is getting to be more like who you know or how close you are to someone who does know.

So, if you make $300K in one year and after taxes and expenses you can save $95k. Your wife who is good at what she does wants to start a company and you go to the bank and barrow $200k and put it with your $95K.

Start a company and hire 10 people and after 6 years you have lost enough money that even though your income is above (well above $175K) you still are in the 15% tax bracket and you company is still in the red with revenue well above $1.2 million.

Am I rich? I have 5 children and their college funds are funded enough to insure their education at a state school. We drive cars that were manufactured before 9/11/01.

AM I RICH- I think not.

and there are 100s of thousands of me in this economy.

Raise taxes too much, change deductions too much- i close my store lay off my employees and bring my wife home and we do with what we can with my $150k + income.

Less taxes is more jobs- IT IS NOT A ZEOR SUM GAME!

Why would you close your store if you were still making an after-tax profit? You just hate earning money?

Why would you lay off employees if they were still a net profit for you?

And can I get the story on your company straight?

You invested $295,000 in a company. In six years you're doing 1.2 million revenue, with ten employees, but you're in the red-- you have costs above 1.2 million dollars?

Can you concentrate a wee bit on spelling things correctly? I know you're probably busy being a titan of industry and all, but it really makes you looks rather silly to have so many simple errors in every post.

So, you understand that part of the purpose of government is to ensure that some talents aren't rewarded. Good.

So why did you claim that government can't do anything about the natural order of things?

Allowing people to keep the entire fortune their parents worked hard to make destories their need to work hard.

There's an interesting chart on the effects of corporate tax vs. unemployment here:

Corporate Tax Rates and Unemployment
...If you look at the entire data set, the correlation between tax rates and unemployment appears to negative. That is to say, lower unemployment rates tend to be associated with higher corporate tax rates, not lower ones. [Link: www.presimetrics.com...]

nearly our entire GDP and we are the largest economy in the world and we need the dollars of other less than friendly countries to continue to purchase our debt.

The ad tries to make the point that a hate crimes bill would have stopped the 3 racists from killing that poor man.

If someone is determined to get his/her "kicks" by ganging up with similarly inclined folks to kill someone, I don't think a hate crimes addendum to a possible indictment is going to deter him/her/it.

"Get the needle for killing someone? OK, I'll run that risk. Five years extra for a hate crime? Oh, gee, I'd better reconsider..."

re: #673 jamesfirecat

By the way you know what I bet would reignite the rugged individualism you so desire?

A 50% death tax on all assets in excess of a million dollars.

Kids get to keep a million dollars of their parents money and then after that half of it goes to Uncle Sam.

Those kids want to stay rich? They're gonna have to earn it the same way their parents did!

Works for me. Just try to get the trust fund babies and the politicians they buy with Grandpa's money to vote for it.

YOU worked for it? You get to keep most of it.
YOU married it? OK, same deal
YOU are a descendant of someone who worked for it? F*** you, ya lazy sh**. You've probably benefited from it all your life, so take your superior breeding and education and make your own damned money.

If you can't live on half of the fortune someone else made, too bad. Mommy and Daddy's $5 million is only $3 million after the estate tax? Cry me a river.
