Christine O’Donnell: God Wants Me to Run

Wingnuts • Views: 4,771

One of the ways fundamentalist religious right politicians disguise their massive ego-driven ambition is by claiming they’re on a mission from God. Today’s case in point: Christine O’Donnell.

David Brody: How do you see God’s role in all of this because you’ve had some ups and you’ve had some downs. Where is God in all of this? How do you see all of that?

Christine O’Donnell: God is the reason that I’m running. If I didn’t believe that there were a cause greater than myself worth fighting for, if I didn’t believe that it takes a complete dying of self to make things right in this Election cycle I would not be running and when you die to yourself you rely on a power greater than yourself so prayer is what’s gotten us all through. The day that we saw a spike in the polls was a day that some people had a prayer meeting for me that morning for this campaign so I believe that prayer plays a direct role in this campaign and I always ask please pray for the campaign; please pray for our staff; please pray specifically that the eyes of the voters be opened.”

Because unless you’re very, very specific, God might screw up your order.

Anybody else hear God say that about her running? At least for office.

Last time I checked, her opponent held a healthy lead according to latest polls.

Methinks Goddess Eris is messing with her head for the fun of it.

I love it when losers like O’Donnell put god on the hook for their inevitable failure at the polls. God wants you to run and lose, Christine, because he still hates you for dabbling in witchcraft.

4 Gus  Mon, Oct 25, 2010 10:20:10am

Typical. God will “intervene” for a stupid Senatorial candidate in Delaware yet ignore the people of Haiti. Yet again we have the “skyhook” principle and wishful thinking at work. More specifically it illustrates O’Donnell’s delusional thinking.

Regardless, invoking one’s god is a convenient excuse for just about anything. It’s a goal post that’s easy to move around per situational ethics.

So, she thinks she’s on a mission from God? So, when she loses by 20+ points, that will show what exactly? God’s will? Maybe God isn’t happy with using his name in vain. Maybe God didn’t pick you. Maybe you misheard.

Maybe… just maybe… and you can call me crazy on this… God had nothing to do with your choice of running. He just doesn’t care enough about your political campaign or political future to get involved. Or any other politician who throw’s God’s name into the fray.

These statements by conservative Christians need to be parsed carefully.

God is the reason that I’m running.

Translation: The reason I’m running is that I believe that in so doing, I serve God’s purpose for me.

Mistranslation: The reason I’m running is that I know, because God told me, personally, that this is His purpose for me.

From within the perspective of Christianity, virtually no one is vouchsafed direct knowledge of God’s purposes in specific. Everyone gets to know the basics: Thou Shalt Not Kill, etc. But from there, human reason with all its imperfections and limitations has to step up and sort things out. You’re not going to get a direct answer from God whether or not you should bet on the Steelers, nor, for that matter, whether or not you should run for office.

O’Donnell is within her “theological rights” to pray that the eyes of the voters will be opened. I hope her prayer is granted, and that in consequence, she loses in an epic landslide. And then, if she is graced with an unlikely degree of insight, she will realize that her prayer has indeed been granted.

O’Donnell decided to drop the lawsuit in 2008, claiming that she couldn’t afford the legal fees. “I definitely felt that there was gender discrimination,” O’Donnell told me in a September 2 phone interview, but she declined to elaborate. “I believe that right now that if we unite in the conservative movement, the bigger picture is at stake, and we need to put that behind us.”

Sure, when you see Christine O’Donnell talking in debates about not knowing any Supreme Court cases or any current members of the Senate, you think, There’s at least a 50% chance this woman is Jesus Christ incarnate. But you didn’t think she’d actually admit it. Well, THINK AGAIN. In an interview with The 700 Club airing tomorrow, O’Donnell reveals that she actually died once but then rose from the dead when God wanted her to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate.

98 What, me worry?  Mon, Oct 25, 2010 11:36:47am

OT, but I just had this awful conversation with a colleague at lunch about vaccines that really disturbed me. I was talking about the recent outbreak of Whooping Cough in CA and the general anti-vaxxer crowd.

So, my friend says that friends of her daughter (8 yrs old) do not vaccinate. Other friendS (plural) of her daughter SWEAR that THE VERY DAY AFTER they got their children vaccinated, they “came down” with autism. It’s such a load of BS. I told her that most likely her friends were #1 exaggerating. #2 they had autistic children all along, or #3 the kids were misdiagnosed and it’s not autism at all. My niece was diagnosed with a whole lot of things, including autism before they got to Aspberger’s. Anyway, she made it sound like it was dozens of kids with autism so I asked her how many kids she was talking about and she finally told me she only knew of one.

I said to her, why in the world would the doctors lie to you? If vaccines are harmful, they would pull them off the shelves. They don’t WANT people dying or suffering from horrible diseases.

I work fairly closely with this woman so other than that, I bit my tongue, but man, it pissed me off.

Yeah, but McAdams is behind by double digits. The point being that Murkowski would be better for Alaska than Miller and it would have the added plus of slapping the extremists in the face.

I am beginning to wonder if the best thing would be for the Tea Partiers to all win, show the populace what kind of serious damage they can do when they have power and then have them become an object lesson in what extremism does to a country. However, if people haven’t already figured that out, I don’t think putting the Teatards in charge is worth the risk that they might actually do some damage, which is too high as it is.

I guess so. It sure is scary. She swears to me her kid is vaccinated. Only she knows if that’s true, but she lets her kids play with unvaccinated kids. Back when schools paid for vaccinations, you were vaccinated in school and you were not allowed to attend public school without a vaccine. They should reinstate that rule.

I would never, under any circumstances, even if my child is vaccinated, allow my kids to play with unvaccinated kids. Even if just to send a message to the mother that this is completely unacceptable.

Hopefully, the 1976 President won’t be DEAD! So he won’t NEED an erection! If Americans are going to spend money to erect anything, why don’t we tear down those nasty slums and erect luxury high rises for poor people and senior citizens! Not for presidents who can afford to pay for their OWN erections!

Considering that Al Davis is possibly already in some sort of lich-form I would actually think that might be the more likely explanation for the Raiders stomping the Broncos.

Lyle Alzado gets 36 sacks! Fireballs leap from owner’s booth! Zombie Raiders win and finish the season 16-0! It would make steroids seem quaint….

I never thought that. If she had the sense to know when to shut up, Bill Maher wouldn’t have those videos. If she’d gained the sense since then, she’d have put her name in the hat and then we wouldn’t have heard a peep.

The tragedy here is that if voters do turn on Democrats, they will in effect be voting to make things even worse.

The resurgent Republicans have learned nothing from the economic crisis, except that doing everything they can to undermine Mr. Obama is a winning political strategy. Tax cuts and deregulation are still the alpha and omega of their economic vision.

Ok, but Clinton didn’t balance the budget until his second term. Krugman (whom I really like) doesn’t speak to that other than “it’s slow”. I don’t know what people expect. For Obama to have fixed all of our country’s woes within 2 days?

Also, the economy IS getting better. More people are back to work although that’s probably regional. Some cities have less unemployment and others, more.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as predicted IF minorities come out and vote like they did in 2008. And I think they will. These are voters that may not have been counted in the polling data because they have little to no voting history.

Sharon Angle says she is being misinterpreted.

Angle’s been ‘brewing’ up trouble among the state’s 130,000 registered Hispanic voters for weeks now, most recently telling Hispanic high-schoolers that “some of you look a little more Asian to me.” She was referring to another controversial ad that Univision allowed to run, which shows a group of dark-skinned men coming over the border in a menacing fashion.

“I think that you’re misinterpreting those commercials,” she said. “I’m not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence, and there are people coming across that fence.” Her point was that the men could in fact be Asian, because dark is dark. No word yet on how the Asian voters of Nevada feel about being depicted as coyotes, but we’re staying tuned.

Mistrial for Geert Wilders, new trial to be held

The trial of MP Geert Wilders on charges of inciting hatred and discrimination must be heard again, a special committee of Amsterdam district court ruled on Friday afternoon.

After a day of bizarre twists, Wilders’ lawyer Bram Moszkowicz again asked for the judges to be dismissed because they refused to rule on whether a key witness should be recalled.

According to De Pers newspaper, defence witnesses Hans Jansen may have been pressured by another court official at a dinner party.

The judges’ refusal to recall him, coupled with other irregularities earlier in the trial, prompted the special panel to dismiss the court and order a retrial. The incidents have led to the impression the court is biased [against the MP], court president Leendert Verheij is reported as saying.

I might have more respect for the godtalkers if they used “goldfish” instead of God, to explain their successes and failures.

Goldfish, take the wheel.

It’s in Goldfish’s hands now.

Goldfish hates homosexuals.

Goldfish told me so.

Just like Goldfish said.

Goldfish wants me to win this.

The godtalkers have this elaborate, self-serving, cat-and-mouse relationship with God; he seemingly drops in at his convenience to either listen or ignore or make stuff happen for them. And when they’re ignored it’s mysterious, and when they refuse to take responsibility for their own decisions it’s up to him, if the wheels fall off it was his will, when they find a lucky penny or come out on top it’s because he made it happen, etc. ad nauseam. They vasillate between fear, confusion, ambivalence, and praise, depending on the outcome.

People like O’Donnell employ their godtalking like a Swiss army knife, to any event, significant or otherwise. And then they go so far as to measure its method of success with, “I guess God didn’t want it to be…”

If I were religious, I really don’t believe God takes part in such petty nonsense, or chooses to involve himself so intricately in the lives of such intellectually helpless, counterfeit people. More likely, he’d say grow a pair, and figure it out; I have real stuff to do.

Apparently there is big money in the anti-jihad business.

Anti-Muslim crusaders make millions spreading fear

Steven Emerson has 3,390,000 reasons to fear Muslims.

That’s how many dollars Emerson’s for-profit company — Washington-based SAE Productions — collected in 2008 for researching alleged ties between American Muslims and overseas terrorism. The payment came from the Investigative Project on Terrorism Foundation, a nonprofit charity Emerson also founded, which solicits money by telling donors they’re in imminent danger from Muslims.

Emerson is a leading member of a multimillion-dollar industry of self-proclaimed experts who spread hate toward Muslims in books and movies, on websites and through speaking appearances.

Leaders of the so-called “anti-jihad” movement portray themselves as patriots, defending America against radical Islam. And they’ve found an eager audience in ultra-conservative Christians and mosque opponents in Middle Tennessee. One national consultant testified in an ongoing lawsuit aimed at stopping a new Murfreesboro mosque.

But beyond the rhetoric, Emerson’s organization’s tax-exempt status is facing questions at the same time he’s accusing Muslim groups of tax improprieties.

“Basically, you have a nonprofit acting as a front organization, and all that money going to a for-profit,” said Ken Berger, president of Charity Navigator, a nonprofit watchdog group. “It’s wrong. This is off the charts.”

Well, she has been dodging the press again.

She’s not just dodging the press, she’s setting them up.

According to one reporter on the scene, Angle arrived about 40 minutes late. She spoke for about five minutes inside.

As the event was coming to a close, a campaign staffer in a car near the assembled press reportedly spoke loudly into his cell phone, saying: “She’s Ready? She’s coming out now?”

Two women then got into his car, while Angle apparently went out a side door, avoiding TV cameras altogether.

The press, thinking Angle was still inside the building, stayed outside for another half hour

Stupid press, “Wow…I don’t think we were supposed to overhear that…we’d better stay here and wait for Sharron Angle so we can ask her important questions.”

re: #230 darthstar

Question: Who the hell is Bob Levin and why can’t he post his one line links as comments instead of filling the side-bar with Bob Levin pages? One of his “pages” is literally just a title, a link, and the word “Yes.” Seriously, he’d get more discussion in a live thread if that’s what he wanted…makes the side-bar look like a spam board.

/rant off, and none of my fucking business anyway.

He has nice conversations in the Pages…it’s a whole ‘nother world in there…and at least he’s not pimping a blog.

But I don’t know who the hell he is.

It’s a Picasso called Arlequin. Here’s a bit of background on it. A Picasso exhibit is coming to Seattle, and I plan to go see his work in person again. The colors and textures of his artwork in real life are mind blowing.

Now you can drive 80mph! That’s what happened here in Texas when they raised the speed limit.

Ooh! Thanks. Now I remembers the Arlequin angle.

I’m a Van Gogh/Dali guy myself.

Thanks…I suppose if the conversations are ongoing, that’s what Charles created the pages for in the first place. It’s just the side bar looks like Levin land and often he’ll have the same topic, in the title of three or four pages in a row when they could be merged into one page. It’s like NJDHF on steroids.

I wonder if the VA troopers would allow that. In Colorado +9 MPH is the general rule. We have 75 MPH on the interstates outside of towns so I’ll drive at 84 MPH.

Dali’s stuff in real life puts your brain on overload. Photographs can never quite get the depth of color, or the brilliance. I was shocked when I saw a Dali exhibit in the flesh after studying him in school. I must have said “wow” a dozen times out loud. My brain couldn’t process it all.

I’m a lead foot myself. I look for someone driving faster than me and get behind them.

You could make style suggestions to him. The Pages are evolving, and if you see a way to improve them, I think it would be good to share.

Love Van Gogh, but his early work resembles something that would have been painted by JJ Evans

A lot of the artists that became famous for a distinctive (or abstract) style began painting as realists. For example, Picasso’s stuff from early childhood was all quite realistic. You can see the brush strokes in the early Van Goghs were quite revealing about the direction his later work might take.

If you like Dali, check out Robert Venosa, mad crazy oil painting technique and a sort of cosmic surrealist theme venosa.com

2? That’s crazy. Probably not even within the typical error for your average speedometer accuracy, tire pressure, etc.

Picasso was a virtuoso realist basically from childhood, he was done repeating classicism and so instead he pretty much changed the nature of painting itself

re: #254 WindUpBird

Yeah, he was brilliant right out of the gate. Most people only think of his cubist stuff, not realizing he was obviously gifted since early childhood. He got tired of coloring between the lines early on. Sort of a Jimi Hendrix of the art world.

Wouldn’t that be a frivolous lawsuit? I thought CONServatives were against those.

It would be and we are. Yet another reason why O’D should not be Senator. She’s a chameleon, saying whatever would advance her own interests at any given time, if only it would be believed. Phaugh.

I almost universally agree with you Charles, but this time I’ll have to respectfully disagree. There are millions of sincere people who believe God has a path for their lives. I’m not religious and I’m definitely not a fan of O’Donnell; she’s lightweight fluff, but this doesn’t make her crazy. It’s her other ideas that do.

I think praying is great. All TeaBaggers should do a 24h pray-a-thlon during election-day!
