Lettin’ It All Hang Out

Tonight at redstate.com: And Even STILL I Am Not Allowed To Make A Racial Slur About Our President? After THIS? AYFKM!?!?!?

In the new post-racial America, brought to us by Barack “don’t call me black or white, just call me American” Obama, we have been told our differences are behind us now…just because he exists and… just because he is black. Yet, day by day and speech by speech, this President has done more damage to race relations than any combination of Presidents since Lyndon Johnson…and he, at least, tried to make things better with a sincere heart.

Were anyone else to have been caught on tape making these sorts of remarks, they’d have already been fired and given a 2 million dollar job contract with the competition. Oh wait.

The lack of outrage should surprise no one here. We were told to vote for him… not because he was black but… because he brought with him hope and change and the promise of a color blind society. He has delivered on none of these, instead making race relations worse today than they were before he was elected. Since being sworn in we’ve been routinely told that any disagreements with his agenda HAD to be because he was… wait for it…

Black.

It isn't Obama wedging the races apart, it's the stupid ones.

I fail to see how making conservatives show their true racist colors is the same thing as damaging race relations over all

4 SanFranciscoZionist  Mon, Oct 25, 2010 6:24:01pm

Is that supposed to suggest that Lyndon Johnson is the big standard by which race-relations-damaging presidents are judged?

And, what?

Maybe it's just me--I don't see race relations getting notably worse. I see a lot more public racism from political activists, but my sense is that people on the street are treating each other about as well or poorly as they did before. Thoughts?

Make all the racial slurs you want, RedState...CNN is paying you for it...for now.

Dave Poff is so focused on the racial angle he forgot to look at the front end of the sentence:

I liked the idea of having a black president, for obvious reasons, but I wouldn't have voted for him just for that, and I supported Hillary with no sense that I was missing out on a chance for racial unity, until she went down. And I considered McCain until Palin turned out to be horrible. I just don't recall being told that if we elected Obama, we were going to go all post-racial overnight, and all the racial issues would go away. If I was told that, I laughed and forgot about it immediately.

The ideas as I saw it was the fact Obama won indicated we are closer to post racial than ever. I believe that. Even if largely offset with the backlash amplified by a harsh recession.

Bigotry has always been there, somewhat under the radar, but cultural suppression has given us time to educate our kids to the irrationality of it all. We may not see an increase in racism in our daily lives for a while, but the implicit acceptance of overt racism from authority figures will have an effect on our grandkids. Real social reform always lags the effort to enable it, whether we view the change as positive or negative. I think the changes will become visible within a few years if the Glenn Becks, Gellers, and Limbaughs continue to line their pocket at the expense of civil equality.

I was thinking the same thing. The radicals have dubbed Obama as the Messiah, the first post racial president, and claimed he was billed as such by the campaign or supporters.

Not true of course, it was his detractors who attributed to him these impossible-to-live-up-to labels. It was done by design, so they could knock him down a peg or two as needed.

Sure, the fact that we actually did it seemed to indicate something big. And it still feels good. I like it that two little girls descended from American slaves are sleeping in canopy beds in the White House, and their mother is the hostess at state dinners. All politics aside, that rocks hard.

I've said it before, but it shows how amazing this country really is. Less than a decade after one of the most significant events in collective memory, perpetrated by brown people with funny names, America turns around and elects as President... a brown person with a funny name. Only in the West, and probably only in the US and similarly English-speaking West, will you find a collective nation that is sufficiently post-racial to do that.

A FAR-RIGHT group has vowed to “close down” any town that ditches British traditions and shows favouritism to Muslims.

The English Defence League said it has written to every council in the country threatening a mass invasion if they ban the word “Christmas”.

It includes using the term “winter festival” in case Christmas upsets Muslims.

Things are likely only to get crazier and crazier until the 20% or so of moderate Republicans who are still out there abandon the party thus making it stastically impossible for them to win presidential elections.

Point of face, the GOP is abandoning people like me, not the other way around.

Matt Taibbi:

Of course, the fact that we're even sitting here two years after Bush talking about a GOP comeback is a profound testament to two things: One, the American voter's unmatched ability to forget what happened to him 10 seconds ago, and two, the Republican Party's incredible recuperative skill and bureaucratic ingenuity. This is a party that in 2008 was not just beaten but obliterated, with nearly every one of its recognizable leaders reduced to historical-footnote status and pinned with blame for some ghastly political catastrophe. There were literally no healthy bodies left on the bench, but the Republicans managed to get back in the game anyway by plucking an assortment of nativist freaks, village idiots and Internet Hitlers out of thin air and training them into a giant ball of incoherent resentment just in time for the 2010 midterms.

It's called context. If the president wants banana cream pie, he gets it. If someone posts on a blog that they can't say "banana" when talking about the president, it's a racist dog-whistle. Sarc tags don't change that.

A) Constantly mentions which state he lives in

and

B) Constantly refers to the fact that he is a registered Democrat but much prefers Republicans

I am certain I am not the only lizard wondering if you will be casting your vote for Paladino. You posted yourself that you will be stepping over party lines in this very thread...so either hold your cards closer to your vest or don't get irked when you are asked a logical question.

(1) straw man argument that
(2) misunderstands a simple metaphor (shotgun vs. back seat of a car, not front or back of the bus) in order to
(3) bemoan the impropriety of calling Obama the n-word.

The bozo could simply have made the point that Obama is probably in no position to impose these types of demands given what is likely to happen on November 2. But no, the smug dope had to go and prove his own racism.

Yeah that's sort of been my point.

Thank you for confirming it Dark.

He's a much a "Democrat" as I would be a "Republican" if I moved to (fill in the blank Ultra Red state), realized nobody with a "D" next to their name could get elected there and decided to cast my vote in a primary for the most liberal republican.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with him doing that as everyone has a right to try and make their vote count for as much as it can, but he shouldn't pretend the fact that he doesn't like Obama or does like some Conservative candidate marks a major windshift in America's fotunes politically....

I live in Wichita. My choices come down to "ultra-conservative Republican" or "slightly conservative Democrat." There's really nothing left of center, regardless of party...

That's what I mean when I say that democrats/republicans in certain regions won't look or sound like democrats/republicans.

Take the case of the invasive sonogram abortion bill in Louisiana. Sponsored by a democrat, and nearly as many dems voted in favor of it as reps.

This is why blind partisanship loyalty is not a virtue.

For me, Brady's SoCon factor gave me pause. But my main concern this time around is cutting back the strength of the Democrats statewide, because I feel their influence has been very bad. I almost wish it was possible for the GOP to win the legislature and Quinn to keep the governor's mansion. But that still wouldn't work for me, given that 2011 will see Illinois need to redistrict.

Kirk, by contrast, was an easy call for me. Kirk should have been straight about his military record, but Giannoulias is actually corrupt, which Pat Quinn is not. I won't vote for a corrupt politician, not after I got burned by George Ryan (the one time I wish I'd voted for the Democrat).

In my district, they are not. Mark Kirk and Joel Pollack are not loons, not at all. And they will improve the GOP's Congressional delegation by being in it.

Kirk's probably better than Alexi G anyway. And he'll keep the hotair nuts busy screaming RINO for a couple of years also. Win win!

The fact that merely by saying he belongs to it, he can get a lot of attention from other posters here for casting a run-of-the-mill, irrational, rage-based vote.

Cowboys are re-breaking my fucking heart.

I am starting to think they mean to.

The Giants have a very aggressive and adaptable defense. Unlike the Colts, the Giant defense doesn't just protect a lead, they actively go after the other side to force turnovers.

And the Cowboys' defensive failure isn't helping. Once the Giants found their bearings, they've kept Eli Manning safe. And if you let Eli Manning sit in the pocket like that, you will get pummeled.

You really do repeatedly point out that you're a registered Democrat, and you spend a fair amount of time these days gloating about how the Democrats are going down...and you really do go on the attack, quite aggressively, any time anyone points this out, or asks who you're voting for.

The weather's been good for the last couple of months though. Norman was hit hard by the ice storm last winter and tornadoes in the spring/early summer, so hopefully their crappy weather quota was filled for a couple of years.

It is hearsay in the fact that these comments are not coming straight from the horse's mouth, but from others. I guess I just have a kind of antennae that picks up on this sort of thing after someone has lied about my opinions before, claiming that I did not have the spine to speak against some nasty act when I in fact did.

What Tea Party violence?

Woman stomped outside Conway-Paul debate (with video)

Outside the Conway-Paul debate, a Rand Paul supporter pulled the woman's blonde wig off and stomped on her head. She was representing the liberal organization MoveOn.org and claimed to be presenting Paul with an award from RepubliCorp. That's a group created by MoveOn.org that focuses on what it calls the merger between corporate America and the Republican Party.

"I'm here to present Rand Paul with the 'Employee of the Month' award, however his supporters were not very nice to me and my message which is same as everyone else. I got my head stepped on and I have a bit of a headache," said Lauren Valle, MoveOn.org.

I usually don't make a big deal out of these incidents, scuffles happen at protests and political events. However this one is pretty bad. Looks like 3-4 men beating up a woman and kicking her on the ground. Pretty ugly.

well yeah, hello! the Dems are going down, & maybe we should look at why instead of blaming me, shooting the messenger solves not so much.

Those reasons are:

1. The economy is in a poor state, and the party in power will hurt at the polls whether they are to blame or not.

2. The Conservative cult media has almost total control of an angry cult of voters who believe in a fantasy world almost totally unconnected to reality, and have an irrational hatred of Democrats. The size of this cult might be comparatively small compared to the population, but in a country like the US where voting is not compulsory, relatively small numbers of angry, deluded voters can have a large impact.

3. The Conservative cult media is able to frame almost every issue that reaches the national consciousness, and in a culture as media-driven as the modern USA, that gives it great influence. True believers and uncritical observers allow it to present memes unchallenged by fact or reason. Furthermore, the target audience of these memes is among the most gullible and easily emotionally manipulated.

Woman stomped outside Conway-Paul debate (with video)

I usually don't make a big deal out of these incidents, scuffles happen at protests and political events. However this one is pretty bad. Looks like 3-4 men beating up a woman and kicking her on the ground. Pretty ugly.

Rand Paul's campaign delivered an equivalency fail in response:

A spokesman for Rand Paul said,"Violence of any kind has no place in our civil discourse and we urge supporters on all sides to be civil to one another as tensions rise heading toward this very important election."

The Campaign for Michigan Families, a political group run by Gary Glenn of the American Family Association of Michigan, has started blanketing the 99th State House District with robocalls attacking Democratic candidate Toni Sessoms.

During the robocall, Glenn repeatedly uses the word “homosexual” 10 times in the one minute and thirty-six second robocall. Glenn and the Campaign for Michigan Families launched a similar robocall and radio attack program against Garnett Lewis in 2008. Lewis was running as an out lesbian...

Speaking of science, there was some good news in the field of Paleontology recently:

Encased in Amber, a Trove of New Species

And yet, on this story like so many others that covers topics from science, there is a heap of poor science reporting. The NYT article is pretty good (as is most of their science articles), but there are some real doozies out there, such as this one from The Independent:

Frozen in time, 50 million years ago

A collection of beautifully preserved bees, ants, spiders and other small prehistoric creatures that lived 50 million years ago have been unearthed in a huge amber deposit in India.

Scientists said that the fossilised globules of tree resin have entombed a spectacular menagerie of insects that had survived the extinction of the dinosaurs and were living at a time before mammals had evolved.

[...]

Science FAIL!

That Independent article has some other idiotic statements too.

Over and over we see how ignorance in a field really trips up those who write about a technical subject. Sad thing is - there is not market (money) to pay to hire specialists in the media.

And once again I thank you for that.

Things are likely only to get crazier and crazier until the 20% or so of moderate Republicans who are still out there abandon the party thus making it stastically impossible for them to win presidential elections.

When one party is the only one that can win, who knows what that one party is going to present as its choice--and by extension ours?

One of the great checks and balances we have is that if/when one party f***s up, the voters can throw them out and try the other party.

Speaking of orifices, the important news of the day:

Health advocates, porn industry representatives debate workplace protection

Public health advocates, porn industry representatives and performers past and present gathered in Oakland on Monday to discuss workplace protection law and whether a more tailored regulation specifically requiring condom use on adult film sets is necessary.

[...]

A petition filed by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation late last year asked Cal/OSHA asking the agency to amend its regulations to directly require condom use during vaginal and anal sex in the adult film industry.

Current law regarding blood-borne pathogens applies across industries and was crafted in the 1990s for healthcare workers. Though it does require employers to take protective measures — including "barrier protection" — a Los Angeles-area porn performer's recent positive HIV test has intensified the debate on the need for a more tailored law and stricter enforcement in the lucrative industry.

Condom use is common in gay pornography but rare among companies shooting porn for straight audiences.

re: #257 HoosierHoops

I'm looking at houses in More..What do you think?

I think you should spell it "Moore", which in my time was kind of a meh bedroom community for both OKC and Norman. You could get a lot of real estate and house for your money there IIRC.

re: #277 funky chicken

Well...where do you work? Moore has some nice areas because it got, er, excavated by an F-5 that tore through there in the last decade. The traffic is heavier down there than up here, but there's more to do in Norman than Edmond. I would not even consider Piedmont or Yukon, and probably wouldn't look at Mustang either.

Be sure to ask if any house you look at flooded in July when we had a foot of rain in about 2 hours. Lots of places that aren't close to waterways flooded pretty bad. A lot of south Edmond and other places in OKC were under water.

If I'm working in Norman, I consider it, Moore, and maybe south OKC. Everything else would be too far away for my comfort.

Hoops, one thing you may not have experienced yet is the full effect of a big T-storm down there. Since the ground is mostly clay, it doesn't absorb water worth a darn, and the copious amounts that fall in a very short time have to go SOMEWHERE. Part of your due diligence when buying a home there has to be consideration of the drainage pattern of the land in which you have an interest. The categories are Good, Improvable, and Forget It.

The two biggest mistakes I made when I moved there (other than moving there itself)--one, not getting cloth seats for my car to replace the vinyl ones my car had when I bought it two years earlier; and two, living in an apartment building with a flat roof. Something about getting water through the walls when one is on the first floor of a two-floor building, and watching the thermostat in the living room fill with water.

Negative racial beliefs are part of the human condition. Or more accurately, distrust of one's "tribe" is part of the human condition. In most places in the world, it boils down to ethnicity. We need a conscious and ongoing effort to recognize this trait and counteract our unfortunate tendency to demonize and discriminate against others who look different.

Funny, it seems that conservatives should be fine with the notion of a half-black president from non-priveleged origins. It disproves the claims of those who say they cannot succeed in "white man's America".

Many years ago I remember listening to an overnight classical music program that played nationally on public radio - this was at least 30 years ago - that used that piece (Sicilienne) as the show's theme song.

Faure is the composer of note for these types of pieces:

Tom DeLay's money laundering trial to begin

(CNN) -- Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday in the trial of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who is charged with illegally funneling corporate money to help elect GOP candidates to the Texas legislature.

The Republican was indicted in 2005 on charges he illegally sent $190,000 in corporate money through the Republican National Committee to help elect GOP Texas legislative candidates in 2002.

DeLay, who resigned in 2006, has pleaded not guilty to money laundering and conspiracy. He has said the trial will clear him.

His attorney, Dick DeGuerin, told CNN in August that the case was "highly political" and should have been heard in DeLay's home county of Fort Bend. He said the case against his client began over congressional redistricting that gave Republicans control.

DeGuerin had wanted the trial moved to another jurisdiction, arguing that "heavily Democratic" Travis County has a "strong anti-Tom DeLay feeling."

But Senior Judge Pat Priest ruled in August that Delay will get a fair trial in Austin.

"He's finally going to get a trial. He's literally been begging for five years," said DeGuerin, adding the evidence "will show he [DeLay] didn't do anything."

Two other men facing charges in the case will be tried later.

Over the summer, DeLay said a separate, long-running federal criminal investigation of him had been closed with no charges. The Justice Department declined comment on the federal investigation.

DeLay was under investigation for his ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials. Abramoff admitted defrauding Native American tribal clients of millions of dollars for help in gaining casino licenses.

DeLay said he had informed Abramoff that "our relationship is over" when he learned of Abramoff's plans for casinos aboard cruise ships. He also told reporters that during a visit to a casino on a Choctaw reservation he was disgusted when he saw a long line of baby carriages lined up while parents were gambling at 11:30 p.m.

About 50 Rhode Islanders spent $7,500 a plate for a dinner with the president fundraiser. One problem, the president didn't eat with them.

Obama speaks at Chace house, skips lobster, steak

President Obama's final stop was a $7,500-a-head fundraiser in the well-appointed home of Arnold "Buff" and Johnnie Chace on the East Side, not far from Brown University.

The president spoke for about 20 minutes, then left before the dinner of locally grown foods by celebrated Rhode Island chefs -- including lobster risotto -- that Mrs. Chace had planned.

Fewer than 50 were in attendance, according to Eric Hyers, campaign manager for Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline, the Democratic candidate for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy.

...Mr. Obama concluded his remarks at about 7:30, saying he couldn't stay for dinner.

"I've got to go home to tuck in the girls and walk the dog and scoop the poop," he said.

Dennis Kucinich Says Latest Abduction By Aliens Confirms They'd Vote for Obama If Granted Immunity!

Dennis Kucinich, the 14 year Ohio Democratic Congressman who claims he has had more than one close encounter with Aliens, said his latest conference with intergalactic visitors was just last weekend during a camping trip!

Kucinich who first reported he was abducted while sleeping as a penniless politician on the couch of Shirley Maclaine somewhere out west after he was not re elected as Detroit Mayor in 1979 , said that the aliens were still trying to make inroads into US culture and as recently as last Friday had donated over $600M to the Mid Term Elections, over 99% of which went to democrats, 'and I don't want to hear on Fox any Shit about Foreign Investors buying the election," a florid Kucinich exclaimed excitedly. "Aliens are people too, and should be treated with respect!"

Dennis the Menace, currently weighing in at 99 pounds on a sparse 4'9" frame, says his recent interaction only confirmed what he believed all along...Aliens are on the side of Barry Obama.

"Barry has an other worldly persona, and this is recognized by the space travelers who stand solidly behind his ambition to recognize all aliens, whether they come from Ur-Anus, Mars, Tijuana or Caracas," said the slightly buzzed Kucinich in a spacey interview on Business Today with Neil Cavuto on Fox.

"All they want is the right to vote,' said Dennis, " inAlienable rights to start a business, be paid a living wage, get universal health care and a reasonable housing allowance. Is that too much to ask? And kids...they want to adopt..being asexual they can't reproduce but are just dying to have a family, one like Angelina Jolie!"

"Are you telling me, " said an incredulous Cavuto, "that Aliens are incapable of having SEX? Well, the jokes on them, if they can't have SEX, then Obama can't SCREW them...I'm afraid they're just going to have to go somewhere else to look for Sanctuary....I hear the UK has a few nice soccer fields just waiting for some Travelers to settle in....and the benefits aren't bad either!"

Harry Reid aide fired in immigration flap

An aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been dismissed after reports she lied to federal authorities about her marriage to a Lebanese national.

Reid’s press secretary who dealt with Hispanic media, Diana Tejada, has admitted to the federal officials that she married Bassam Mahmoud Tarhini in 2003 in exchange for payments for “some of her expenses,” according to a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in the Western District of Oklahoma that prosecuted the case.

Another Democrat staffer fired, this time in Florida...

Aide fired over Florida debate foul

Alex Sink’s campaign violated rules Monday evening at the CNN/St. Petersburg Times Florida gubernatorial debate when her make-up artist delivered a message during a television break.

Sink, the Democratic nominee, was shown a two-sentence message on a cell phone that offered her advice during the debate. Republican nominee Rick Scott who was sitting next to her in this nationally televised debate, noticed the violation and notified a CNN official, who approached the make-up artist and Sink and confiscated the cell phone.

The message read: “The attorney who [w]on the Sykes suit said alex sink did nothing wrong. Tell not to let him keep talking about her.”

After the debate, the Sink campaign released a statement from the candidate announcing that the advisor who sent the message has been removed from the campaign. The advisor was not named in the statement, but a campaign spokesman confirmed it is Brian May, who signed the rules agreement before the debate on behalf of the Sink campaign.

re: #425 Obdicut

Part of the reason for this:

The United States has dropped out of the "top 20" in a global league table of least corrupt nations, tarnished by financial scandals and the influence of money in politics, Transparency International said on Tuesday

And we can expect corruption to increase as the Citizen's United ruling is exploited.

So we go from Clinton, to Bush, to Obama, and the corruption level keeps increasing, and the Citizen's United ruling gets the blame?

There are semi-permanent factors in play. Chief among them is that when government and its favors become economically more decisive, people work less to build something or do something useful, which pays less, and work more to gain favor, which pays more.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

A question to the masses. Why do candidates think that they can get away with lying/exaggerating about their military service. Do they really think that they can get away with the lies and not be called out for their lies?

Do they hold such disdain for their constituents? Paladino is the latest in a line of candidates this year that have lied about their military service. In Paladino's case, he claimed to have commanded 250 troops at Fort Bliss over a period of six months. Turns out that he did no such thing. He was at Fort Bliss for 3 months, and commanded some number of troops upon his return to Buffalo.

Why exaggerate about your military service? If you lie/exaggerate about that, what else are you willing to lie about. Moreover, you dishonor those troops who do serve honorably in the Armed Services.

Libertarians are farther right than Republicans!

Wait? what?

I'm so late to this conversation but no way can you use that broad a brush. There is a large segment of libertarians who are left leaning. and while someone like Ron Paul gets a lot more press, that doesn't mean that his is the only view that counts.

I'll be voting Libertarian for Governor and the PSC positions and any other position that has a libertarian candidate, except the senate, where I'm voting Democrat. (the Senate seat doesn't have a runoff and as much as I like voting libertarian, I think Isakson is a terrible senator and needs to go away).

Look, I don't know if your definition of Libertarian is the Ron Paul or Boortz or Reason magazine variety, and if that's your *only* definition of libertarian, then yes, it's pretty conservative and right leaning.

But conversely you have people like Radley Balko and ... I can't believe I'm about to say it, Bob Barr. Yes I know neither one of them are exactly Liberal, but neither are they the frothing mass that you see from Boortz or Reason.

And I don't agree with some of what they write, but at least when I read their stuff I don't feel like I need to take a bath :)

Charlie Sheen Found Drunk, Naked, With Escort Locked in Hotel Room Closet

Brooke Mueller might need to rethink how "great" things are with Charlie Sheen.

In the latest bizarre, alcohol-fueled incident involving the actor, Sheen was found this morning in a New York City hotel room, passed out and half-naked on the bed, while a woman who identified herself as an escort was heard screaming from the closet.

"She was fearing for her life and was naked," a source tells Life & Style. "Charlie was incoherent but started screaming slurs at the cops. They recognized him immediately and gave him two options: they could take him to the hospital or take him down to the station. Charlie chose the hospital."

Another insider confirms that "police responded to a call for an intoxicated male" inside The Plaza Hotel around 2 a.m. They arrived to find a trashed room, which included damage to a chandelier and furniture, along with the scene described above.

Even more troubling? Sheen was in NYC on a vacation with ex-wife Denise Richards and their two children.

"His two daughters were sleeping in the next room," says a source. "Denise had to go with the cops and leave the girls with a nanny. She looked distraught."

An onlooker says guests witnessed Sheen being taken away in an ambulance, while paramedics were heard referring to the situation as an "overdose."

** UPDATE: Claims Sheen's rep: "What we are able to determine is that Charlie had an adverse reaction to some medication and was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to be released tomorrow."

Celebrate Bob Barr as someone who changed his mind, but to make him the presidential candidate was such a shockingly cynical decision by the Libertarian Party it removed the last vestige of respect that I had for them as a party.

A quick review of Mond's position on AGW shows that he's ignorant on it. To be honest, I think that the reason why a lot of big L Libertarians are bad on the subject of science is because they don't have the guts to say what they really feel, that global warming is such a long term down the road issue that it's something they don't really think is worth investing and regulating as a government.

They're wrong. but that philosophical belief in the limited role of government is a major driving force behind their statements. And to be honest, it's possible Monds really doesn't know enough to make a statement. You're right that it's not good enough, but it's better than a blanket denial that I see from so many conservatives.

Re: Barr - (Disclaimer, I contributed to the Barr Campaign) I totally respect what you're saying and can see where you're coming from, but I think if nothing else, Barr has the zeal of a convert but also the credibility of being a former congressman, which can help sway people to understand the libertarian party isn't just a party of kooks and crazies. The effort didn't quite work, particularly with a polarizing right wing and a historically high turnout and enthusiasm for Obama. (it's hard to get people to vote third party when they're actually happy with their candidates)

I know the Libertarian party has some serious and potentially fatal flaws, but it's still the party closest to my philosophy with the Democrats second. (maybe liberaltarian is more apt for me...)

re: #251 Killgore Trout

What Tea Party violence?

Woman stomped outside Conway-Paul debate (with video)

I usually don't make a big deal out of these incidents, scuffles happen at protests and political events. However this one is pretty bad. Looks like 3-4 men beating up a woman and kicking her on the ground. Pretty ugly.

What's uglier to me is the reaction to this from the rightwing blogs.

The fever swamp is almost universally supporting the assault - they have gone as far as calling her a "suspected terrorist" in the headline. Some of the comments are comparing her to Rachel Corrie (using the term that Charles bans people over), and are expressing remorse that she didn't meet the same fate.

No cache yet, so posting the Google Search for the link.

Clearly a case of assault with intent... this bitch was a hit bitch from soros. I hope she suffered some sort of permanent damage.

re: #519 Killgore Trout

I have my beef with the NJEA (and their ongoing demands for more money despite the fact that the state spends more per student than pretty much anywhere else in the country, and chafes at the need to keep salaries flat at a time when private sector is busy laying off jobs or not giving raises), and they have shown themselves to be anti-Gov. Christie on several occasions, but O'Keefe is simply not credible.

re: #518 bloodstar

They're wrong. but that philosophical belief in the limited role of government is a major driving force behind their statements.

That's what I'm afraid of. In everything I've learned and read and studied over the past five years about complex systems, the one sure-fire way to completely fuck them up is approaching them with an ideology. I don't understand why so many libertarians cannot get the importance of the final two words in "As limited government involvement as possible".

In addition, many libertarians appear to believe the market can predict future needs and address them before they exist-- that the free market will solve global warming because there will be demand to solve global warming. That represents such a strange and incorrect view of economics that it makes me worry about their grasp of economics in general.

I think if nothing else, Barr has the zeal of a convert but also the credibility of being a former congressman, which can help sway people to understand the libertarian party isn't just a party of kooks and crazies.

I think it might help if he actually explained the shift in his views; I've never read anything from him that actually made a convincing narrative. And hell, I came from a somewhat similar place to him, and made a somewhat similar conversion. But I can actually explain, narratively, how that changed in me.

I know the Libertarian party has some serious and potentially fatal flaws, but it's still the party closest to my philosophy with the Democrats second. (maybe liberaltarian is more apt for me...)

I don't think the Libertarians or the Democrats can be accused of having a coherent philosophy.

I'm philosophically in favor of pragmatic and practical solutions for problems that face us; to me, that puts the GOP and the Libertarians in last place, since they are entirely ideologically dominated. The Democrats still have far too much of an ideological approach, but both historically and in the present moment they've shown themselves to be far more pragmatic than ideological.

I absolutely agree that lying about military service is so contemptible as to be almost beyond language.

I've noticed a larger question over the last few years that's similar to this: in our presently voyeuristic intrusive everything-youve-ever-done-is-subject-to-scrutiny-and-distortion media culture, how does ANY candidate running for office fail to check their frigging closets first? Palindino's is the latest, Meg Whitman's really brought it to mind. The details of her housekeeper situation are squishy enough to be forgivable, in my mind -- BUT: as a candidate running for a ridiculously high-profile office in a state where candidates routinely fall under the most minute scrutiny, running on a platform that contains a strong "control immigration" element, how do you NOT look at your own staff and their documentation BEFORE YOU EVEN RUN???????

Is it arrogance? Contempt for the electorate? Brain-dead stupidity? (A caveat -- I do not believe this is an ideologically-driven thing -- it seems to crop up in small races, large races, conservative, liberal, yada yada.) I just don't get it. I'm not remotely sympathetic to those who fail to check their own closets then get called on it. But with all the investigative tools available to candidates, this just does not compute.

EVERYONE has a skeleton or two, some more egregious than others

Knowing that at sometime, someone somewhere is going to unearth "yours", why not come right up front with it from the start

"I'm SATTV4U2,,, I'm running for (xxxx). Back in 1973 me and some friends got too drunk one night and painted graffitti all over the College library wall. It was a dumb thing to do, and we paid restitution?

Exactly.

Voters have proven time and time again that they can be forgiving of what they perceive as honest oversight and believable contrition.

How does that fact get missed with such breathtaking regularity?

Kucinich was never mayor of Detroit. He was mayor of Cleveland, which at the time was almost as bad.

I noticed several Kasich ads on the site. Kasich, aliens, aliens, Kasich, hmmmmm...

re: #454 NJDhockeyfan

About 50 Rhode Islanders spent $7,500 a plate for a dinner with the president fundraiser. One problem, the president didn't eat with them.

Obama speaks at Chace house, skips lobster, steak

Ouch.

President Obama usually acts with dignity and class. That was tacky and disrespectful, IMO.

re: #440 ProLifeLiberal

Seeing your post, a fair number of us are around Norman and OKC. How many live in the area?

I don't live in the area now. I lived there for three-plus years over 25 years ago after a semi-voluntary corporate transfer. While I never adapted to the way of life, I still have a high regard for the people there and fond memories of the fine people with whom I worked.

IMO it's a good strategy. Tell everyone that you did something (or many somethings) stupid, admit it in full, and use it to show how you've changed from your young-and-stupid days.

Of course, your opponent(s) will say that you've cherry-picked from among the many incidents in your evil life, and that there MUST BE MORE, but the voters may appreciate your honesty.

As I've mentioned before, if Bill Clinton had said, "I was a college student in 1970, and like most college students then, I smoked a little weed; I did, I don't, I haven't since college", the whole thing would have been a non-issue. "...but I never inhaled" created more trouble than it solved.

100% agree

I'm also on a quest for a candidate(s) that will refuse to do attack ads

Pleasantly, here in Georgia the Senate race between Isakson and Thurmond has not included attack type ads
(iirc,, they made a pledge to keep the battle civil)
I applaud both!
