I don’t want to believe the ugly comments at almost every right wing blog about the woman assaulted by Rand Paul supporters last night. Has the entire wingnut blogosphere turned into a pack of rabid animals?

Jim “Dim” Hoft thinks Lauren Valle deserved to be stomped on the head, and he’s digging into her background to prove it: UNHINGED LEFTIST Who Lunged at Rand Paul Is Paid Far Left Activist.

Ann Althouse immediately tried to claim the incident was staged: Finally some good news for Democrats.

Looks like they're watering down the charges to a "level 4 assault" - in line with bar fights, domestic violence, etc...not a bad thing, just an unfortunate misunderstanding. Fuckers.

However: It looks as if this may not result in an arrest. Based on the footage of the incident, cops are treating the case for the time being as a fourth degree assault case, which puts this in the realm of domestic violence scuffles and barfights, she tells me. She says they're treating this as a "misdemeanor, not a felony."

We were discussing, in another thread a day or so ago, the power of controlling the meaning of words and the fascist history of simply defining something a certain way - correctly or not - until it is simply instilled in the broader public consciousness as truth. Tell enough people for a long enough period of time that non-conservative activists are not human and therefor fair game, and this is what you get. The same is true for the murder of doctors who legally perform abortions - you get enough Randall Terry's defining the doctors as being non-human, and eventually some weak-minded lunatic starts killing people. It is crucial not to let those controlling the radical rhetoric get away scot-free.

How Rand Paul, if he was smart, could have actually come out of this with minimal damage: The minute, no, the second he heard that someone from his campaign was stomping on the head of a woman four feet away from him, he should have had his own security go to her aid, and he should have openly condemned the actions as soon as he reached a microphone...before he was asked to, not once, but several times. Instead, he says it was "... a daze of lights flashing, people yelling and screaming, bumping up, and it was a bit of a crowd control problem. " (i.e. it's the police's fault)

Now, his official statement is

The Paul campaign has disassociated itself from the volunteer who took part in this incident, and once again urges all activists -- on both sides -- to remember that their political passions should never manifest themselves in physical altercations of any kind.

Some have suggested Valle tried to bait Paul into getting photographed with her, but she said she didn't get close enough for that to happen. She said she had been yelling out to "Dr. Paul" in the crowd, in order to get him to respond to her effort to give him an award from the fake company "Republicorps." But she added she never got a chance to get close to him because she was "targeted."
Valle said the attackers had identified her well in advance of the assault.

"They identified me as a MoveOn worker, and as someone they knew from prior campaign events," she said. "And so, about five minutes before Rand Paul showed up, they motioned to each other to start taking photographs of me." She added that they formed a "blockade" behind her.

"It was premeditated," she continued. "As soon as Rand Paul's car showed up they started to move in front of me."

But look at the actual candidates, and listen to all the crazy they spew, and it's obvious they're unable to focus on viable solutions. What I have to wonder about is how totally insecure in their positions these people are if they respond to disagreements with violence.

If they really thought their position was the best one, with the widest appeal, wouldn't they let the marketplace of ideas determine the winner rather than resorting to eliminationist tactics (including assaulting people with opposing opinions)?

To the extent that they seem intent on eliminating any and all dissent through whatever means necessary (including violence) they completely put the lie to their confidence in their own beliefs.

The suppression of thoughtful discussion is SOP in the Republican playbook. I've had countless thoughtful and polite postings deleted from Joe 'BP' Barton's Facebook page, simply because they didn't fit the narrative he was going for. Sarah Palin's crew has outright banned me from commenting.
