Gawker Goes for the Sleaze

Politics • Views: 4,204

I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m no fan of Christine O’Donnell, but this Gawker article is one of the creepiest smear jobs I’ve seen recently: I Had a One-Night Stand With Christine O’Donnell.

Yeah, it’s exactly what it sounds like, right down to details about O’Donnell’s waxing habits, or lack thereof. And of course, the author is anonymous.

Overtly misogynistic sleaze should be good for Gawker’s ad impressions for a day or two.

To repost:

We only have this douchebag’s word that the story went down the way he said it did. Given that he appears to be a complete prick, there’s no way of knowing that he didn’t, say, encourage her to keep drinking to try to get into her pants.

Her positions are ridiculous enough without this kind of sleazy, unprovable, who-knows-what-really happened crap.

2 Sol Berdinowitz  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 12:21:01pm

From the downstairs thread: She is the one who has made an issue of her own sexuality and her views on other people’s sexuality, with her anti-masturbation views and statements about her “chaste lifestyle”.

Otherwise, no normal person would have any reason to care one way or another what she does for fun in her spare time with (or without) other consenting adults.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but doesn’t a one-night stand involve intercourse?

“I Had a Platonic Sleepover With Christine O’Donnell”

Also: My undying devotion to Gawker + My loathing of CO’D = I have no problem with this article.

re: #6 Big Steve

I would not care, because as far as I can tell, BO never made an issue about his sexual history or his preferences.

9 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 12:27:50pm

None of this changes my opinion of O’Donnell. It does, however, have the potential to generate sympathy for the woman because Gawker went for the sleaze.

And we have only this guy’s claims. Unsubstantiated of course. Classy.

Hey, you know what. I slept with Adriana Lima and Gal Gadot. At the same time. And I remember distinctly that it was amazing and that they were incredible. /that they were both in magazines and I was dreaming… well, I said it happened. I just didn’t say how…

10 RadicalModerate  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 12:27:56pm

Saying “Gawker Goes for the Sleaze” is like saying “Water goes for the Wet”.

Sadly, the gossip section of Gawker, IMO is even worse than places like TMZ - think National Enquirer or Star with a zero-minute “news” cycle, where those publications are at least on a weekly basis.

On the other hand, their TV news (Gawker.tv) and tech news (Valleywag) sections are actually decent sources of info.

I never thought anything could make me sympathetic to O’Donnell.

This is just…ugh.

12 JamesWI  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 12:29:30pm

On the one hand, it is pretty sleazy.

On the other hand, when you’re a public figure that goes beyond even the typical right-wing hatred of gays, past the disapproval of premarital sex, and even come out to attack masturbation, you open yourself up for a whole lot of attacks if your own actions behind the scenes don’t live up to the ultra-moral picture you’ve painted of your self.

If you spend all your time crying out about how immoral everyone else is, you better be perfect yourself, or people are going to start coming out with stories like this.

Next thing you know you’re running for office and some douche that you only have the vaguest memory of is writing a fucking thesis on a gossip website lamenting your pubic hair status. Y’all bitch about the batshit women currently in politics. Well, you reap what you sow. You tell me what sane woman wants to deal with this shit? God, you’ve made me feel sympathetic to this idiot. I would not care at all if she had not made an issue of her sexual history. I still do not rightly care one way or another. In the end it will not harm her, and might even get her a bit of sympathy votes.

Probably not enough to make up e her 21-point handicap, though…

28 Kragar (Antichrist )  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 12:43:50pm

Murkowski wins key decision prior to election

In a significant victory for Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the Alaska Supreme Court decided Wednesday that voters can look at list of certified write-in candidates when they go to the polls.

Murkowski had campaigned hard to keep the lists in voting sites. After all, the incumbent senator’s name isn’t the easiest to spell, and the Division of Elections is divided on whether a misspelled name will actually count.

The state’s Democratic and Republican parties joined efforts to oppose the move. The Alaska Republican party had called it “inappropriate” and charged that it was “inherently unfair” to change the rules.

The ruling allows voters who need help remembering names of write-in candidates view a list before they vote. The list, however, does not include the candidate’s party affiliation.

Wow… I agree This shouldn’t have been made public, but the damage is done. …And truthfully, this was overkill. She was never in danger of winning the general election… It’s just public humiliation at this point…

But that being said, I have very little sympathy for her… She demands the attention from the public and then tells everyone how immoral they are. She goes on Billl Maher’s shows, gives speeches and acts like she’s holier then thou. You know there would be people that would want to I wouldn’t be surprised if the story is true, and if it is, then she has serious issues beyond what’s obvious.

The woman is trailing by double digits. Focus on some races that are close, and on some things that actually matter, idiots.

Leave it to the Democratic/Liberalish pundocracy to do their best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the court of public opinion whenever possible. At some point, you hit a watershed, and it goes from pointing out legitimate criticisms and stupid policy opinions (or total lack thereof), to picking on someone. This is that moment. Then they always fall back on the whole ‘but but they all say they’re for strong morals and blah blah blah’. In the case of soliciting prostitutes or infidelity or something, that might matter to some people. But going out and getting hammered and then not banging some asshole who then goes on to post all about it on the internet isn’t a morally reprehensible act.

If Olbermann/Maddow/etc… mention this at all, I’ll be posting ‘son, I am disappoint’ jpegs on their Facebook pages. Sadly, I’ve moved it to my desktop in anticipation.

There was an ad that was run in Provo County back in the early 90’s, or late 80’s. I forget.

The (Mormon) Republican ran an ad implying that the (Mormon) Democrat, who was not married in his 30’s must be gay.

I think that was the only time that a Democrat has won in Provo County.

Not that I’m saying they should vote for her, just that there is a limit to slime.

61 JamesWI  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 12:59:25pm

I think the issue here is context.

For a normal person, this is a story of a single, attractive women drunkenly hooking up with a single, younger guy she finds cute. We all say, “whoop-de-do” and the guy is an asshole for posting it.

With O’Donnell’s ridiculous views on sexuality and morality, however, this is a horror story of adultery and immorality. This is like John Edwards without the baby.

If anyone else caught Colbert last week, he had a thought exercise based on her views on sex. It went something like: “Masturbation = adultery. Gay sex is like committing adultery. Therefore, masturbation is like gay sex.” Following that, this little tryst is also sort of like Larry Craig, minus the public aspect.

Besides, she told Coons to man up, well, this is what happens if you are woman in politics. Its a dirty sleazy gross nasty vicious business, and she should consider herself lucky they haven’t painted her this way starting 3 months ago. Of course they were gonna go there, this is for a seat in the Senate. Its not for bingo champ at the rec hall. She wants to play in the big leagues, well, this is what happens. The hits hurt.

Wonkette: Some Weird Guy Says He Got Naked With Christine O’Donnell Once

From the “almost a Penthouse Letter” letter

But there were signs that she wasn’t very experienced sexually. When her underwear came off, I immediately noticed that the waxing trend had completely passed her by.
Obviously, that was a big turnoff, and I quickly lost interest.

Wonkette’s response:
Obviously? The global population problem could’ve been solved very easily in about 1998 had all of Earth’s Men been like this guy, right? “Yucky yuck, pubic hair. I only want sexytime when the lady looks like a seven-year-old girl.”
Jesus christ, everything and everybody is just gross. Including Wonkette, for posting this.

[Link: wonkette.com…]

Really the whole waxing thing has passed me by.
I don’t get it…espically dudes waxing…it seems so odd.

65 Amory Blaine  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 1:01:54pm

If this non-encounter happened at all, it had to have been a long time ago. O’Donnell has admitted to engaging in promiscuous sex before she saw the fundy light, yet in this story she plausibly claims to be a virgin.
This can only create sympathy for O’Donnell at a time when the GOP is having some success with its quite false claims that Coons is using personal attacks to avoid the issues. At Free Republic, the O’Donnellists can scarcely contain their joy at this revelation of lib depravity and desperation.

We really, really don’t need this.

I gave up composing my response about how this kind of thing is more damaging to a woman’s career. Instead I’ll say that we lack a statistically significant sample of women in office to say whether sexism is a factor, therefore it must be. Right?

80 shutdown  Thu, Oct 28, 2010 1:12:38pm

Sexual hypocrisy is rampant throughout the political class. Hubris has become teh sine qua non for public office, with very few exceptions. Leaders both spiritual and political, would have us “do as they say, not as they do”. If we disqualified every member of the political class who was guilty of practiced hypocrisy, who would be left to do the filthy job of running government at any level? I would be happy to vote for O’Donnell regardless of her personal sexual preferences and practices; what I would not countenance is her insistence on imposing her personal evangelical morality on me. Even if she were virgo intacta and had never pleasured herself, I would not want her to impose that subjective morality on the electorate. The reality of her private life is of no relevance, other than that it goes to “character” (whatever that means in politics anymore).

It was likely from 2007, as the photos show a “Philadelphia Eagles 75th Anniversary” poster in the background.

Then it didn’t happen, or the photos are unrelated. O’Donnell was 38 years old in 2007 and had already publicly admitted to her earlier promiscuity as part of her various abstinence campaigns.

Exactly. If the best guy for the job can’t get shit done without anonymous blowjobs in the morning, I don’t give a shit.

If the best woman for the job thinks that being touched is icky but has that as a purely personal attitude and doesn’t try to legislate based on it, fine with me.

I am just terminally bored by the sex lives of others.

That O’Donnell wants to have all kinds of crazy repression of sexuality enforced through the legal system is terrible and wrong and contemptible and stupid no matter if she adheres to that code 100% or violates it every night with the New York Knicks.

re: #14 Obdicut

But we have no idea whether this story is true. That is my main problem with it. This is not “Anti-gay pastor paid a gay prostitute for naked snorkel massages”. This is “Guy claims that O’Donnell wanted it real bad while drunk”. Also, he’s a stereotype of a Maxim-reading douchebag who claims he only didn’t have sex with her because of a literal cosmetic issue.

Read that, and now I have to clean up all the coffee I just spilled out all over my desk.

The article is pure sleaze.

I can understand that there are self-serving, lying bastards who will use any non-coherent array of political bits to serve their needs. The issue for me is the otherwise straight thinking and reasonable individuals who fail to see this problem, even when it’s as easy as replacing “Islam” with “Judaism” and “muslim” with “jew” in many statements.

Yea you are right, if Engle, Miller, Iott, et al, walk into Congress, they wont really do all the things they have been saying for the last 6 months. They will go in with a spirit of bi-partisanship and “hey, lets work together”.

Helllooo, are you all high or what?

I think you’re entirely misreading what people are disagreeing with you on. It isn’t the nature of the GOP nutballs.

Sleazy, unprovable, misogynistic attacks are not necessary, and shouldn’t be part of an arsenal.

Delaware Republican Christine O’Donnell has parted ways with yet another campaign treasurer and appointed her campaign manager as her fifth treasurer since launching her bid for Senate last year.

Campaign finance experts say the turnover is unusual and could raise questions at the Federal Election Commission about her financial reporting. O’Donnell began with relatively small donations but has been taking in nearly $1 million a week after winning the GOP primary last month.

The latest treasurer to leave is Sandra Taylor, who began just two months ago. Campaign manager Matt Moran is now listed as treasurer in reports filed earlier this month.

The last straw was the purchase of the Halloween costume.

Don’t take the bait, is my opinion. If her chastity is important to her, that’s great. Acting as though proving her unchaste scores political points is to buy into this nonsense.

I think it’s cyclical. I’m a product of the 70s as a young boy seeing the playboy with the unshaven look. That’s probably why the shaven look is so pervasive today is because it is so different than what we saw growing up. I suspect the youth of today (or tomorrow) will see the unshaven look as “de rigueur” and naturally, be drawn to the opposite.

That post was a bit over the top.

It’s one thing to make an obvious parody of political women you don’t like. It’s no different than men and even apt semi-racily when like Palin or the bimbos on Fox they publicly try so hard to be flirtatious and/or dress in skirts that barely cover their fuzz (or lack thereof, who cares?).

On the other hand, something that allegedly happened in private is private. It is no one’s business no matter how much you find someone like O’Donnell offensive. And really, all there is to it are pictures of her in a Halloween costume.

The only exception to this is when self righteous “family values types” like Newt, or Rent boy guy or Sanford, are caught cheating, in the present, not some thing years ago, by verifiable sources, not anonymous and questionable folks clearly paid off to spread some dirt. That exception only exists because they are publicly telling us that their private lies are better than everyone else’s and holding themselves up as some twisted example.

Yea you are right.

Hey, the country was taken over by a wave of overtly racist, borderline nazi, anti-abortion, anti-science, gay-people-should-die, show-us-your-papers, global-warming isnt even real klan of psychos…

But we didnt want to hurt their feelings or stoop to their level, so they control congress now, but if you think about it we really won in the big picture.

There is a time for moderate. There is a time for “oh shit”. I don’t know where your threshold is for that, but when people start saying armed insurrection is on the table if they dont get what they want and that certain people of certain colors maybe they are not as equal as the rest of us, I am all for throwing elbows and kicking people in the nuts if it keeps those people out of office. I am not really interested in seeing just how much of the crazy shit they say they want to do they are really going to actually try and do. All of it is crazy shit.

Because here is the thing - they will not fight fair. We all know this. You don’t get moral victory points for taking the high road and losing the election. You just lost the election is all.

You guys…I dont know why you think these people are kidding with you when they talk about what they want to do. Do you not believe them? That they want a theocracy? And everyone to carry citizenship papers? Now some of their claims are just impossible, they cant do them even if they take the house, but some of ‘em…they can sure try, and waste 2 years worth of time we can really use fighting one ridiculous thing after another they come up with.

So now it’s hyperbole to quote what they have actually said are going to do if they get elected? Ohhh. I guess they are just kidding. They don’t really mean it. Its all just to get elected and then they are going to go to Washington and see the light. Oh, okay. Whew.

I was scared there for a minute.

Maybe the people here have greater faith in the sound judgment and good heart of the American people than you do. The American electorate will, in significant numbers, pull the lever for R’s this time around. That is pretty normal in an out-year election in a bad economy. But they will not reward thuggery, and where given better choices they will generally choose them. Tea Party candidates will, I expect, do worse at the polls than more conventional Republicans.

At the end of the day the center will prevail. You hyperventilating accomplishes nothing.

Usually telling math puns makes everyone in the room get tensor. They can’t easily integrate that kind of humor into their daily lives and only the most Dedekind make the cut.

That would be wise prevention. Obviously she got in range to do more than protest. Once that happened, well we do have the right to protect all candidates with reasonable force. I get irritated with the idea that how I feel about this has something to do with ‘sympathy’, or with how I feel about the woman who was assaulted.

It’s a simple matter of a law-based society. In a law-based society, people do not get to attack other people and stomp on their heads, EVEN IF THE OTHER PERSON DID SOMETHING WRONG, STUPID OR DANGEROUS.

When they do, they get in trouble with the law.

This is true whether the person they assaulted was Mother Theresa, or some street hood, or a silly woman with a MoveOn sign who was annoying a politician.

I voted in a precinct where bags were “lost.” Bush was appointed by the Supreme Court and the count was stopped before all votes were counted. I’ll admit that I take a rather broad view of the term sympathy, best summed up in Hillel’s statement “that which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow.” When it becomes okay to identify the ideological opponent as “the other,” bad shit starts getting justified in the quibble over which words mean what. Killgore made essentially the same comparison last night, without mentioning Squeaky by name. It was idiotic then, but you updinged it. Why do people feel the need to mention the potential gun she didn’t have to put this stomping in some sort of context?

Small World Factoid: My mom was in Squeaky Fromme’s high school graduating class, remembers her as a talented but deeply troubled individual.

I also brought up the “what if she had a weapon” 2 days ago…

Whether or not she was there to instigate something does not make what they did to her any better. They should have stopped after they pulled her away from the car. I think we can all agree on that.

Speaking of Gawker,

I found this little gem of an ad after the little stomping incident with Rand Paul:

Slimy…..but probably an effective ad. Worse than the Sestak dog crap ad.

Back from a short errand. Regarding Gawker, I think they’re out of line. Joking around about her past associations and causes is one thing but they’re taking this to a cheap and sordid level that O’Donnell does not deserve.

Very much appreciated. I know that I often come off as incredibly abrasive, but I always strive to be equally honest. I’m not Rodney King, I don’t wonder why we all can’t get along, it’s because we’re all real and complex people in an equivalently complex world.

Under our laws, you cannot place your hands on anyone without their permission. Meaning even if they took her by the arm and physically escorted her out, other than simply telling her she had to leave, they would be liable. In fact, assault occurs even if there is no physical contact, by only a threat of contact.

Still holding on to that theory on the 2000 elections? I wasn’t convinced that McCain would lose to Obama either but reality set in election night.

According to this poll, 52% of Republicans think ACORN stole the presidential election for Obama and another 21% aren’t sure.

Does that seem high to you?

Good post, Ludwig and true. Also, I think an important reason why Jews were never typically Republican, and until the last maybe 15 years or so, they weren’t, was mainly because Henry Ford was a Republican, an outspoken anti-Semite who aired his views on his radio station and wrote an anti-Semitic screed that’s still in publication. Another reason why we drove Oldsmobiles.

People can say anything, particularly if they lose, but fact is fact. I’m not going to go through the litany of those events because it’s old news. I only made the mention because of a comment about Bush’s elections.

I’ve become sort of a Reform groupie in the last few months, going to temple because it’s the only tradition that speaks to me, and it’s a nice, if older congregation. I really, really like the fact that the people to whom the OT actually belongs seem to understand its messages and wisdom substantially in terms of metaphor, through the lens of history, in accordance with scientific discovery, and actual rational thought.

Coming at this from someone in formerly in health care that has back problems, I can totally see stupid Rand Paul flunkies getting their beardo testosterone charging and shoving her away or getting her out of the candidate’s vicinity, because come on, stunts happen, and this woman did seem like she was all about the stunt.

. :/

The stomper, openly admits to back problems. That a person with back problems would maliciously stomp on a womans head, shows exactly what kind of scum he is.

Well, you know, she could have maybe beat him to death with that placard she was carrying. Or in the very least, give him a nasty bruise. I don’t think Squeaky ever attempted to stop at a nasty bruise.

Quit downplaying Valle’s “terror attack”, people…she could’ve drew blood (or least give Rand Paul some nasty scratches) swinging that placard around!

If they knew who she was, were alert to her position and prepared to intervene her actions, maybe the proximity of the placard to Randy Paul was a result of the security grabbing at her arms.

I have never had a booze-induced one night stand. So does that mean I can’t be a smart, no-nonsense woman?

No, it doesn’t. It just means you can’t be in politics. A smart, no-nonsense woman, just like a smart, no-nonsense man, wouldn’t last a month. There’s nonsense you have to subscribe to if you want to be in politics. Party Lines.

303 MPH  Fri, Oct 29, 2010 7:54:17am

Yes, the article is sleazy…but so is COD’s hypocrisy. Assuming this article is mostly true…then is simply shows what a hypocrite she is.

As a private citizen, there is nothing wrong with what she did. But certainly there was lust in her heart and probably an intention to masturbate and do all the things she’s made a public issue. Anyone who wishes to rule with political power over the citizenry deserves the embarrassment of being exposed a liar/hypocrite if indeed that is what they are.
