Live Video: Rally to Restore Sanity And/or Fear

US News • Views: 11,750

Here’s the live video feed for the Stewart-Colbert Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. An estimate from an unnamed Parks Service employee puts attendance at “well over 200,000,” according to the New York Times’s Brian Stelter.

Publicly, Parks Service doesn’t estimate crowds. Privately, it has told Viacom there are “well over 200,000” people at the rally, exec says.

UPDATE at 10/30/10 12:03:35 pm:

Rally’s over, so the video is now removed.

Do we have a credible crowd number? SFGate had 60k a little while ago.

Do we have a credible crowd number? SFGate had 60k a little while ago.

That number seems a bit low since the HuffPo bused in over 10k (200 buses) alone.

Don't believe any crowd number estimates less than 24 hours old.

Several journalists on Twitter have estimated there are more than 200,000 people there.

Good on you for asking. You get my utterly inconsequential Skeptic's Seal of Approval.

Note: This does not imply a contrary argument, but merely insistence of evidence.

Guinness World Record crowd hop?

Naw.
This was it.

The Earthquake Game is the name given to a famous college football game played in front of a crowd of 79,431 at Louisiana State University's Tiger Stadium on October 8, 1988.
The game pitted Southeastern Conference rival Auburn Tigers against LSU and was one of the more notable games in the Auburn LSU rivalry. Along with national rankings, at stake was the eventual SEC title. The stadium was filled to capacity and the game was being broadcast on ESPN.
Auburn led the game 6-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. LSU's quarterback Tommy Hodson drove the team down the field before finally throwing a last chance 4th down touchdown pass to Eddie Fuller. The reaction of the crowd was detected by a seismograph located in LSU’s Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex around 1,000 feet (305 m) from the stadium.

Obama OK's Yemen's Child Soldiers and has Doubled Aid to the Jihadi Terror Source

One of the originating sources of yesterday's Islamic attack/massive dry run is Yemen. Obama has sanctioned child soldiers in Yemen, doubled aid to Yemen and released key leaders of AQAP from GITMO, now waging war from Yemen.

While Obama spends countless hours forcing the Jews to ethnically cleanse their capital of its Jews and give up the precious land of their tiny state, he is doubling aidhe handles jihadist countries much differently.

That's what I was thinking....what a way to start a rally. I guess most of the people that put together this rally would like us to go back to the way things were in this country in the late 1970's when Father Guido Sarducci was relevant.

JON STEWART’S WAR AGAINST PHOTOGRAPHY? “Rally to Resore Sanity” pledges to “strictly prohibit filming” at National Mall. “The claim that Comedy Central can prohibit filming on federal property during an event open to the public is completely wrong.”

But it’s revealing that they’d try. It’s really the Rally To Reassert The Failed Narrative. Plus, from the comments: “We smell their fear.”

UPDATE: Charlie Martin emails: “It’s pretty clear that ’sanity’ in this context means ’seeing and hearing what we think is good for you.’”

re: #101 Charles

Yikes, Cat Stevens.

My respect for him vanished when he supported the fatwa against Salman Rushdie.

For what it's worth, he claims it was a bad joke:

In 1989, during the heat and height of the Satanic Verses controversy, I was silly enough to accept appearing on a program called 'Hypotheticals' which posed imaginary scenarios by a well-versed (what if…?) barrister, Geoffrey Robertson QC. I foolishly made light of certain provocative questions. When asked what I’d do if Salman Rushdie entered a restaurant in which I was eating, I said, “I would probably call up Ayatollah Khomeini”; and, rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author, I jokingly said I would have preferred that it'd be the “real thing”.

Criticize me for my bad taste, in hindsight, I agree. But these comments were part of a well-known British national trait; a touch of dry humor on my part...Certainly I regret giving those sorts of responses now.

from an interview with rolling stone in 2000 -

I'm very sad that this seems to be the No. 1 question people want to discuss. I had nothing to do with the issue other than what the media created. I was innocently drawn into the whole controversy. So, after many years, I'm glad at least now that I have been given the opportunity to explain to the public and fans my side of the story in my own words. At a lecture, back in 1989, I was asked a question about blasphemy according to Islamic Law, I simply repeated the legal view according to my limited knowledge of the Scriptural texts, based directly on historical commentaries of the Qur'an. The next day the newspaper headlines read, "Cat Says, Kill Rushdie." I was abhorred, but what could I do? I was a new Muslim. If you ask a Bible student to quote the legal punishment of a person who commits blasphemy in the Bible, he would be dishonest if he didn't mention Leviticus 24:16.

115 Gus  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 10:34:23am

re: #113 publicityStunted

For what it's worth, he claims it was a bad joke:

Also has a bit of a personal aspect to it:

Alleged resemblance to character in the novel

While few have doubted Yusuf's piety or Sunni Islamic conservatism, some believe that the character "Bilal X" in Rushdie's book is a caricature of Yusuf Islam,[17] and one observer has theorized that this may have been partially responsible for his reaction to The Satanic Verses.[18] The fictional character Bilal X, a successful African-American former pop singer who has converted to Islam, is portrayed by Rushdie as the "favored lieutenant" of "the Imam", a character based on the Shia Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Bilal X's "well-nourished, highly trained" voice serves as "a weapon of the West turned against its makers." [19]

I never called for the death of Salman Rushdie; nor backed the Fatwa issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini--and still don’t. The book itself destroyed the harmony between peoples and created an unnecessary international crisis.

When asked about my opinion regarding blasphemy, I could not tell a lie and confirmed that--like both the Torah and the Gospel--the Qur’an considers it, without repentance, as a capital offense. The Bible is full of similar harsh laws if you’re looking for them.[10] However, the application of such Biblical and Qur’anic injunctions is not to be outside of due process of law, in a place or land where such law is accepted and applied by the society as a whole...

My panties aren't twisted, but it was a real shock to me when Cat Stevens endorsed the murder of a writer. I was a huge admirer of his music -- I played a lot of his songs in my early bands in Hawaii. For someone who personified peace and love and all that stuff, to suddenly come out and sound so bloodthirsty was a nasty surprise. And please note -- my distaste for what he said isn't coming from a right wing viewpoint. What he said was the epitome of an illiberal, Dark Ages opinion. Nobody should ever be killed for writing a book.

He's no threat to anyone, and I don't want to see him in Gitmo or anything like that, but it's pretty hard to forgive that kind of statement, especially when he tries to float the transparently false excuse that it was a joke.

Shrug. It's a cop-out excuse, you ask me, but I also know that people who will completely dismiss the whole rally over Cat Freakin' Stevens, would completely accept that cop-out excuse coming from a Tea Party Christian.

Personally, I will settle for, "Cat Stevens is not my favorite person, based on some of his shit about Israel" and leave it at that.

I didn't say everyone-and I do know happy conservatives-but people who strike out at the least provocation (real or imagined) and worry a lot about other people having fun in ways they do not approve of, I can't imagine they are living joyful lives.

Imagining what others feel is a practice that can quickly lead to shaky generalizations about large swaths of fellow humans...it's a tricky enterprise...

No, I have my panties in a twist over his anti-Israel nonsense.

re: #202 SanFranciscoZionist

At a lecture, back in 1989, I was asked a question about blasphemy according to Islamic Law, I simply repeated the legal view according to my limited knowledge of the Scriptural texts, based directly on historical commentaries of the Qur'an. The next day the newspaper headlines read, "Cat Says, Kill Rushdie." I was abhorred, but what could I do? I was a new Muslim. If you ask a Bible student to quote the legal punishment of a person who commits blasphemy in the Bible, he would be dishonest if he didn't mention Leviticus 24:16.

And that shows that you understand the point of the rally. Cheers.

And that was 20 years ago... and is his remark any worst than this remark...

"Mohammed has just become the most popular baby name in Britain. “Am I a racist to feel alarmed by that?” Maher asked his panel. “Because I am. And it’s not because of the race, it’s because of the religion. I don’t have to apologize, do I, for not wanting the Western world to be taken over by Islam in 300 years?”

I wonder if we get an apology for this bigoted remark.

I know many conservatives that have absolute joy at telling others how to live. You confuse what would make you joyless with others who do not consider that sort of self righteousness as being burdensome or negative in any way.

Maher is afraid of all religions. So it is not surprising that he would be concerned that any religion seems to be on the upswing.

Given that Christianity is already dominant in the Western World, can I assume that he figures you should just stick with what you've already got, and fear any three-hundred-year trend that might change that?

Of course it is tricky. And this is just my impression. I'm not suggesting we make national policy based on it.

Since I approve of increasing the general level of happiness, I'd be delighted to hear that that most heavy viewers of Fox News, for example, are not fearful. Considering the constant drumbeat of fear and anger they are fed, however, I'd be surprised.

The Ozzie vs. Cat Stevens "Crazy Train vs. Peace Train" bit was good, though. I'll give Yusuf credit for renouncing what he said back then, but I don't buy the "satire" excuse.

I believe he believes it was satire. A lot of people distort their own memories when they're ashamed of something foolish they said or did. He made some beautiful music, which made the things he said more painful for me, so I think it's great that he at least doesn't seem to feel that way anymore.

Religion is often a force for good, but as we've seen with Yusuf, it can really screw a person up. I just hope we all try to be better people as we mature, and correct our earlier personal failings as best we can.

While we're at it: I plan to do NANOWRIMO, this year. (National Novel Writer's Month). The challenge is 50,000 words in thirty days.

I have three potential projects, and I'm asking people on Facebook and such to vote on them. I figure the Lizards should also get a vote. These are your options.

1. A mystery novel set in Renaissance Florence, the sequel to the recently completed one.

2. A mystery novel set in the medieval English Jewish community.

3. A more literary-type novel about the women in King David's life.

Vote on this thread and indulge me! If you have already voted on Facebook, no voting again!

That actually makes a whole lot of sense. What do you expect to find in a full sized laser printer... circuit boards, toner cartridges, toner... SOMETHING IN THE TONER CARTRIDGE.

Unless they were using chemical sniffers (do they do that to all international cargo), Xrays, visual inspection, that kind of stuff, would not show anything to odd, unless someone looking at the printer or inside the printer was some expert on the construction of that printer.

This "tact" could be used in other sort of devices.

Hijab sighting on the Mall

I was there recently.
I saw plenty of Muslim families touring the Capital, and looking like they appreciated being American.

It's good to hear people chanting "USA" for once. When I heard it at the Beck rally I wanted to vomit over their twisted definition of patriotism.

Yes, indeedy, doing really well.
Was on vacation last week - made a big loop, Tennessee, Kentucky, a few hours in DC, Virginia, North Carolina, then back through Alabama, Mississippi to home.

'twas a great trip.

The best political speech in a very long time was non political and delivered by a comedian.

The politicians, pundits, partisans and talking heads ought to be ashamed of themselves. They have all been oughted for who and what they are by John Stewart.

I was a HUGE Cat Stevens fan when I was 13, which is maybe the right age for his stuff. I am another ex-fan now, but I enjoyed watching this edit of the old [young] him and the new [old] him doing "Father and Son" as a duet:

I think the Cat Stevens/Ozzie/O'Jays train skit may nave been one of the best things ever.

While the Tea Party's version of celebrity is Victoria Jackson, who has said a lot of more batshit crazy things than Cat Stevens' stupid interview twenty years ago. She's at practically every Tea Party rally there is.

You know who she is right? Fondly remembered for her famous roles on SNL, like "ditzy blonde #2" and "annoying blond #1", and "shrill woman in the backround"

Just FYI-- John Legend is an independent artist from The Roots. I absolutely recommend looking up all their stuff, though. They're incredible. What you saw at the rally today was just a small taste of their awesomeness.

Also, The Roots are the best reason to watch Jimmy Fallon's talk show, since they're his house band. The recent clip of Jimmy, The Roots, and Justin Timberlake going through the history of hip-hop is geeky fun:

The King David story provides a clear opening for hot man-on-man action... will it be an illustrated novel?

I think it was a bad move. I was just getting ready to comment that the rally was doing a great job with the speakers. No Micheal Moore, Cindy Sheehan. They did a great jobs keeping ugly radicals off the stage until Cat Stevens.

I've got to wonder though, just how hostile this crowd is to Israel.

Having seen both video and still shots of this crowd, and the earlier Beck crowd, which was bigger? Anyone?

This one looks quite a bit larger to me. There's going to be a CBS estimate at 6 pm, by the same company that did the aerial photograph analysis of Beck's rally. This one looks at least twice as large to me.

312 William of Orange  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 3:54:28pm

re: #101 Charles

Yikes, Cat Stevens.

My respect for him vanished when he supported the fatwa against Salman Rushdie.

"I'm very sad that this seems to be the No. [2]" -- Cat Stevens (2000)

314 Toots McGee  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 4:34:12pm

Just got back from the rally. The crowd in person was ridiculous. The crowd stretched back solid to 9th street and was sizeable even further beyond that. Some portions of the grass were initially being closed off but people eventually went on them because there was literally no place else to go. The crowds were wall to wall from Madison Ave to Independence Ave in a large number of places and packed like sardines onto the steps and walls of buildings that lined those streets. People were in trees, on top of porto potties, anywhere you could get a vantage point.

Having seen the Beck aerials, and having walked around the entire mass of humanity today, I can safely say that this event dwarfed that thing. It's not even close. I wouldn't be surprised if it's way over 200,000. The pictures will tell that tale.

315 danhenry1  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 4:50:55pm

Was there early and left around 1430. Best estimates are around 35-,000...Police and even the the Mythbusters have come up with that figure. And there were still folks streaming in. Sorry I had to leave. DC will be a good party town tonight, or not...hope everyone gets on the way home safely I bet an accurate figure will be closer to a half million. D

316 danhenry1  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 4:51:43pm

the first number should have been 350,000

317 Batman  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 4:51:45pm

200,000 is far from Beck's ten million, but to be fair it's much easier to get the soulless to rally on 9/12 than sane, rational folks to rally on 10/30. It's cold, it's almost Halloween, and rallying is for crazy people with strong opinions.
