Live Video: Rally to Restore Sanity And/or Fear

Here’s the live video feed for the Stewart-Colbert Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. An estimate from an unnamed Parks Service employee puts attendance at “well over 200,000,” according to the New York Times’s Brian Stelter.

Publicly, Parks Service doesn’t estimate crowds. Privately, it has told Viacom there are “well over 200,000” people at the rally, exec says.

The Earthquake Game is the name given to a famous college football game played in front of a crowd of 79,431 at Louisiana State University's Tiger Stadium on October 8, 1988.

The reaction of the crowd was detected by a seismograph located in LSU’s Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex around 1,000 feet (305 m) from the stadium.

That's what I was thinking....what a way to start a rally. I guess most of the people that put together this rally would like us to go back to the way things were in this country in the late 1970's when Father Guido Sarducci was relevant.

In 1989, during the heat and height of the Satanic Verses controversy, I was silly enough to accept appearing on a program called 'Hypotheticals' which posed imaginary scenarios by a well-versed (what if…?) barrister, Geoffrey Robertson QC. I foolishly made light of certain provocative questions. When asked what I’d do if Salman Rushdie entered a restaurant in which I was eating, I said, “I would probably call up Ayatollah Khomeini”; and, rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author, I jokingly said I would have preferred that it'd be the “real thing”.

Criticize me for my bad taste, in hindsight, I agree. But these comments were part of a well-known British national trait; a touch of dry humor on my part...Certainly I regret giving those sorts of responses now.

My panties aren't twisted, but it was a real shock to me when Cat Stevens endorsed the murder of a writer. I was a huge admirer of his music -- I played a lot of his songs in my early bands in Hawaii. For someone who personified peace and love and all that stuff, to suddenly come out and sound so bloodthirsty was a nasty surprise. And please note -- my distaste for what he said isn't coming from a right wing viewpoint. What he said was the epitome of an illiberal, Dark Ages opinion. Nobody should ever be killed for writing a book.

He's no threat to anyone, and I don't want to see him in Gitmo or anything like that, but it's pretty hard to forgive that kind of statement, especially when he tries to float the transparently false excuse that it was a joke.

I believe he believes it was satire. A lot of people distort their own memories when they're ashamed of something foolish they said or did. He made some beautiful music, which made the things he said more painful for me, so I think it's great that he at least doesn't seem to feel that way anymore.

Religion is often a force for good, but as we've seen with Yusuf, it can really screw a person up. I just hope we all try to be better people as we mature, and correct our earlier personal failings as best we can.

This "tact" could be used in other sort of devices.

Just FYI-- John Legend is an independent artist from The Roots. I absolutely recommend looking up all their stuff, though. They're incredible. What you saw at the rally today was just a small taste of their awesomeness.

Also, The Roots are the best reason to watch Jimmy Fallon's talk show, since they're his house band. The recent clip of Jimmy, The Roots, and Justin Timberlake going through the history of hip-hop is geeky fun:

I think it was a bad move. I was just getting ready to comment that the rally was doing a great job with the speakers. No Micheal Moore, Cindy Sheehan. They did a great jobs keeping ugly radicals off the stage until Cat Stevens.

I've got to wonder though, just how hostile this crowd is to Israel.

This one looks quite a bit larger to me. There's going to be a CBS estimate at 6 pm, by the same company that did the aerial photograph analysis of Beck's rally. This one looks at least twice as large to me.

Just got back from the rally. The crowd in person was ridiculous. The crowd stretched back solid to 9th street and was sizeable even further beyond that. Some portions of the grass were initially being closed off but people eventually went on them because there was literally no place else to go. The crowds were wall to wall from Madison Ave to Independence Ave in a large number of places and packed like sardines onto the steps and walls of buildings that lined those streets. People were in trees, on top of porto potties, anywhere you could get a vantage point.

Having seen the Beck aerials, and having walked around the entire mass of humanity today, I can safely say that this event dwarfed that thing. It's not even close. I wouldn't be surprised if it's way over 200,000. The pictures will tell that tale.

Was there early and left around 1430. Best estimates are around 35-,000...Police and even the the Mythbusters have come up with that figure. And there were still folks streaming in. Sorry I had to leave. DC will be a good party town tonight, or not...hope everyone gets on the way home safely I bet an accurate figure will be closer to a half million. D

200,000 is far from Beck's ten million, but to be fair it's much easier to get the soulless to rally on 9/12 than sane, rational folks to rally on 10/30. It's cold, it's almost Halloween, and rallying is for crazy people with strong opinions.
