Aerial Photos Show 215,000 Attended Stewart-Colbert Rally

US News • Views: 13,833

Based on aerial photos taken by airphotoslive.com, the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear attracted approximately 215,000 people, more than twice as many as Glenn Beck’s 9/12 religious right rally.

An estimated 215,000 people attended a rally organized by Comedy Central talk show hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Saturday in Washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News.

The company airphotoslive.com based the attendance at the “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” on aerial pictures it took over the rally, which took place on the Mall in Washington. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 10 percent.

CBS News also commissioned airphotoslive.com to do a crowd estimate of Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally in August. That rally was estimated to have attracted 87,000 people. Amid criticism from conservatives that the estimate was low, CBS News detailed the methodology behind it here.

Although comparing numbers between political events feels good when the numbers are on your side, and it does give some indication of how many politically committed people are willing to spend the money and time to attend, the comparison really is irrelevant where it matters.

They aren't an indicator of voting results.

Seriously though, good for them. I think it's great that it was organized by Comedy Central and generated more people than Beck's rally.

It's funny that Jon Leibowitz, whose ratings were lower than "Beavis and Butthead" on MTV, has become the pied piper of the Michael Moore Party.

So much confusing science, I'm forced to stick with "dumb" guys Victor Davis Hanson and Charles Krauthammer.

That reflecting pool at the Beckerhead Rally consumes a lot of prime center cut real estate where that same area was packed in today.

Can't wait to hear how Beck spins this.

My final take - Stewart had the O'Jays and Father Sarducci - proving that us crazy libs have better taste than he does in the earthly and spiritual.

Most of those pouring into the Mall Saturday appeared to be younger than 35, and the signs they carried showed a decidedly left-wing bent: "I hope this isn't a trap," "I masturbate to Christine O'Donnell," "Communism was a red herring."

Right...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic voters are closely divided over whether President Barack Obama should be challenged within the party for a second term in 2012, an Associated Press-Knowledge Networks Poll finds.

That glum assessment carries over into the nation at large, which is similarly divided over whether Obama should be a one-term president.

Speaking of election. I'm happy to report that I appear to be surrounded by a whole bunch of relatively sane people. Small potatoes compared to the big election this week but it still has a direct affect on my day to day life. Municipal elections were held this week and the wonderful electorate decided that enough was enough and turfed the entire town council. It was a sound turfing too. This past town council were utter idiots that spent all their time fighting with each other to the point where the town lost out on some major development (which we need) because the companies didn't want to deal with the putzes. It wasn't political fighting either, no leftie right debate just pure personal vendetta crap that would be hilarious if it didn't have such real consequences to area.

I was surprised when I read the results because I had fallen into some cynicism about the whole thing. It restored my faith in my fellow humans (and neighbors). Plus the guy I wanted to be mayor got in which was also unexpected. The assumed front runner did sit on council before and I expect that was enough for people to vote for the other guy.

I'm usually wary about a totally virgin council but this case is an exception. I'm not sure how it could be worse then it was.

My mom is in DC right now and told me that the rally has morphed into Halloween. There should be some interesting stuff there.

I must say, however, from tea parties to Restoring Honor to the Rally for Sanity, there's a whole lot more engagement with the general public than there was during the Bush years. That's probably for the best. =D

101 William of Orange  Sat, Oct 30, 2010 9:53:14pm

It's a nice figure, 215000, but emphasizing the size of attendance makes it look more of an ego-war than showing what the real problem is. The message of the rally is show how sick American politics has become. The turnout was good but bringing a sizable crowd to it's feet, and eclipsing other rallies, was not the main goal.

Although comparing numbers between political events feels good when the numbers are on your side, and it does give some indication of how many politically committed people are willing to spend the money and time to attend, the comparison really is irrelevant where it matters.

They aren't an indicator of voting results.

It's totally irrelevent. It doesn't mean anything. It's just funny, given how completely nuts the TPers have been about inflating crowd counts from events the last year or two.

Merkel Makes Like Obama With German Stimulus Excluding Europe

As global consumer demand melts away, slowing production lines across Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel is injecting 82 billion euros ($110 billion) into the economy, the biggest stimulus package in Europe. The government has also made 100 billion euros available in credit and loan guarantees to German companies, including 25 billion euros in loans from Frankfurt- based KfW Group, the state-owned development bank. Merkel says the aid is necessary for the world’s No. 1 exporter to survive the economic crisis.

This pattern won't change whether it's repubs or dems in charge because the economic 'wisdom' of the day doesn't address the real problems of why the pattern is occurring. It's too micro in it's outlook and doesn't connect with the macro problems that the globe as a whole is facing in terms of ecological limits to resources. re: #39 Jadespring

We put the Canadian equivalent of a Tea Partier in the mayor's chair. Somehow he's going to cut the city's payroll, improve services and cut taxes.

The only good thing is that essentially the mayor is just another member of council. So far as I know he can't just enable legislation by fiat.

Still, the next few years are not going to be fun.

To me it's a wonderful thing that a rally of people just having fun, and being against political hate, is so much bigger than a rally of people Fox made afraid of their fellow Americans.

It would be exactly the same if they put an extreme lefty rally in perspective. Saturday was a very good day.

In other news, bears are Catholic and the Pope...well, you know:

Tea Party Movement Alienating Young Voters: Tea Party's Social Views Alienate Young Voters, Even Among Fiscal Conservatives, Analysts Say

My brother and sis-in-law are Evangelical Christians in their very early 40's. The hatred of gays and minorities that you so often see in the Tea-Party movement has no place in their lives, or in the lives of the people they study and worship with.

It's slower-going with Social Conservatives, but I believe that most of us Americans are becoming better people over time, including the SoCons.

Slavery is gone, women can vote, races can intermarry, we're moving toward the end of marijuana prohibition, and moving toward legalizing gay marriage. Things are getting better socially all the time.

Yep.

Yes it will be interesting with him at the helm.

I heard an interview with him and wasn't impressed. He appears to be a bit of dolt. All flair and surface talk without a whole lot of real substance. It was 'gravy train, gravy train and yes gravy train". :) Not that I have a problem with the general principle of reducing the 'gravy' train, that's great and all but when questioned about specifics you get a mash of blah blah phrases and rhetoric.

His whole 'I'll build a subway' thing cracked me up as well. How he expects to do that and keep all the other 'fiscal' promises is a mystery. Maybe it's magic. Anyways last I heard he was back pedaling on that promise already although he was setting up a scenario where when he most likely will have to make a full blown retraction into a "I'm sorry we can't do it because of X and Y. It's their fault. (Not my own fiscal pie in the sky idiocy) " scenario.

Just waot until the TP candidates get in power, they will fix all those aberrations and get us back to the America of our Founding Fathers

Poll: Dems split over handing Obama '12 nomination

[Link: www.wtop.com...]

I find it highly ironic for the press that created Obama to now turn on him. Not all that surprising, in retrospect (it's what they do) - but ironic, to be sure.

I always wonder if stupid people think they're really smart, or if they know deep down inside that they're just repeating the same dumb crap that was fed to them

Two things.

1. Maybe you should just hang out at World Net Daily and freakazoid Breitbart's websites.

2. Consider a name change. I think DoucheParty would be more fitting for you.

There's nothing to defend.

Glenn Beck: 87,000 people showed up.

Stewart/Colbert Rally: 215,000 American.

Okay then...

[Link: www.bbc.co.uk...]

"It seemed clear that turnout was at the top end of what was expected and thousands at the side of the Mall found themselves struggling to see or hear what was going on on the distant stage."

[Link: theweek.com...]

1. A single port-a-potty for every 300 guests
While 150,000 people are expected to attend the event, organizers have secured only 508 port-a-potties, reports The Washington Post, or roughly one portable john for every 300 attendees.

Ergo "top end of what was expected " must mean at least 150,000.

That's over twice the number of people at Glenn Beck's rally...

The rally to restore sanity

re: #202 AmericanParty

CNN, BBC

Oh and here's this....

"In comparing rallies, size matters -- and having covered the conservative and liberal rallies on the mall earlier this year, I can tell you that the Restore Sanity rally was much larger. This is fitting, because there are more Americans in the center than those who are on the right or left. And there are certainly more Americans who prefer the leavening effects of laughter to ideological fear-mongering."
