Another Andrew Breitbart Edited Tape?

Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government site is promoting another outrageous outrage today, claiming that reporters for Alaska TV station KTVA were caught on tape plotting to damage Joe Miller’s campaign.

After Breitbart’s smear campaigns against ACORN and Shirley Sherrod using edited and out of context recordings, what are the odds that this is another bogus hit piece?

Greg Sargent has a response from KTVA general manager Jerry Bever, who says that’s exactly what it is.

“It’s unfortunate that this recording has happened. It’s unfortunate because it does not accurately reflect the journalistic standards of our newsroom and the garbled context will no doubt leave more questions than answers. The Miller campaign’s analysis of the recording is incorrect in many material ways ranging from personnel involved in the conversation, the interpretation of conversation snippets and the reported transcript of the perceived garbled conversation.

“While the recording is real, the allegations are untrue. The recording was the result of a cell phone not being hung up after a call was placed to Randy DeSoto, Joe Miller campaign spokesperson, Thursday afternoon to discuss Joe Miller’s appearance on that evening’s newscast. That phone call was placed near the end of a coverage planning meeting in our newsroom regarding that evening’s Miller rally in downtown Anchorage. The group of KTVA news personnel was reviewing potential “what-if” scenarios, discussing the likelihood of events at the rally and how KTVA might logistically disseminate any breaking news.

“The perception that this garbled, out of context recording may leave is unfortunate, but to allege that our staff was discussing or planning to create or fabricate stories regarding candidate Miller is absurd. The complete conversation was about what others might be able to do to cause disruption within the Miller campaign, not what KTVA could do.”

So they were just talking about how to get the news out if, theoretically, one of the candidates supporters turned out to be a child molester?

I'm so confused. Where can I actually see a transcript of this tape or something?

You also have to wonder about the "cell phone voice mail" bit, that would be pretty hard to create a connect to from an in progress conversation without manually conferencing in from the campaign manager's phone. It's more likely that someone "pocket redialed" and hit voicemail after the conversation was over, or that the campaign manager illegally recorded the conversation. Most likely is a "pocket redial" after the original call was hung up.

The full audio is only on the cell phone of Miller's campaign manager. Will the campaign release it? Also: Who edited the audio that Big Journalism posted?

Heh.

Really this is not nearly as "outrage worthy" as the Brown "whore" staffer gaffe and that was not really any big deal either.

KTVA’s explanation is absurd. What possible context can they put around the suggestion that they start looking for child molesters at a political rally in order to exploit that for their television coverage? That’s a “potential what-if scenario”?
...
Next up: will CBS management take action against their affiliate?
9 researchok  Sun, Oct 31, 2010 11:31:13am

The actual full recording and transcript of the tape will tell the tale. If it were an edited tape, I'm surprised KTVA did not say that outright in no uncertain terms. They would have every right to be outraged.

If the tape is unedited, no amount of spin will leave the reporters in question in a good light.

Right now it seems to be a 'He said, she said'.

The full KTVA statement seems to offer up both a defense and contrition about the whole matter.

"It's unfortunate that this recording has happened. It's unfortunate because it does not accurately reflect the journalistic standards of our newsroom and the garbled context will no doubt leave more questions than answers. The Miller campaign's analysis of the recording is incorrect in many material ways ranging from personnel involved in the conversation, the interpretation of conversation snippets and the reported transcript of the perceived garbled conversation..."

While Bever would not discuss any personnel issues linked with the recording, Bever says "Have we had internal discussions about the level of professionalism we need to bring to our conversations, internally and externally? Of course we have, this is a lesson to learn from.

Time will tell.

Big Journalism still claims ABC invited Breitbart for election night analysis....
Left Assails ABC Over First Amendment Respect

It should concern and disappoint all well meaning Americans engaged in political discourse that Erick Boehlert and his ilk at Media Matters seem so content to cause controversy where none should exist, push inaccuracy, and attempt to stifle fee speech, while lining their pockets with foreign billionaire George Soros’s money.

There is little if anything genuinely American in that. But that is today’s Left. It is who they are. It is what they do. And they do it all too consistently for it to be mistaken for anything other than what it actually is, disgraceful and un-American.

13 researchok  Sun, Oct 31, 2010 11:36:07am

I will say this- if the tape turns out to be edited, they ought to go after whoever did this with both guns blazing.

A mere two days before the election, this would take dirty politics and campaigning to new lows.

I used to think that Breitbart was short sighted and wasn't considering the consequences of blatant lies. Like the ABC election night lie: Why would he lie about being hired for the night when he knew that he wouldn't be on TV election night? He knows the truth on this stuff is going to be exposed and he knows his audience just doesn't care. They'll continue to believe whatever he tells them.

FEMALE REPORTER: That’s up to you because you're the expert, but that’s what I would
do...I’d wait until you see who showed up because that indicates we already know
something...
[Laughter]
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE REPORTER: Child molesters...
MALE REPORTER: Oh yeah... can you repeat Joe Miller’s...uh... list of people, campaign
workers, which one's the molester?
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE VOICE: We know that out of all the people that will show up tonight, at least one of
them will be a registered sex offender.
[Laughter]
MALE REPORTER: You have to find that one person...
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE REPORTER: And the one thing we can do is ....we won’t know....we won’t know but
if there is any sort of chaos whatsoever we can put out a twitter/facebook alert: saying what
the... ‘Hey Joe Miller punched at rally.’
FEMALE REPORTER: Kinda like Rand Paul...I like that.
[Laughter]
FEMALE REPORTER: That’s a good one.

You know, I wasn't that big on George W BUsh and his administration but I never saw them whine about criticism the way Palin and the candidates she's been backing do. It's really pathetic. It's almost as if they want the media only to praise them. I fail to see how this should make me gasp with horror.

Miller has shown that he has no vetting process, or an anti-vetting process; the thugs he hired as 'security' are a mega-creepy bunch who may have violated the laws about hiring active military personnel. I'm not sure why it'd be weird for reporters to see if any of Miller's other workers were also unsavory.

Precisely, Breitbart isn't exactly a bastion of honesty. He seems to approach politics with a by any means necessary type mentality which if it means screwing people over to get his candidates to win or his causes to do well, he will drag people through the mud.

In it's essence, 'the ends justify the means' which is a classic conservative criticism of liberalism and communism.

re: #72 researchok

Well, I'm just confused because this latest Brietbart smear starts out with nothing. It's alleging nothing from the get go. It's just a random transcript of reporters talking that, if you already think conspiracies exist in the media, you might think they were talking about some sort of conspiracy. Otherwise, at worst, if you take what they said dead seriously, they're talking about investigating to see if there are any sex offenders working for Miller.

Since there isn't any actual allegation of wrongdoing that makes any sense, there doesn't seem to be anything at all to the story. And since it's coming from Brietbart, it seems really unlikely there will be anything more.

re: #74 Varek Raith

Sorry.
Breitbart is a proven liar. I'll take the side of whomever he's smearing anyday.
He's edited several things in the past to look far worse than they really are.

That's why I won't give Breitbart any credibility. He is the author of his own irrelevance. The issue is bigger than Breitbart. The first KTVA response is indicative of that. As far as I am concerned, they and not Miller campaign are ahead in the credibility game.

I just want to hear the entire unedited audio and read the unedited transcript of the entire event.

I am mystified as to why some people are upset by that.

re: #77 researchok

I don't think anyone's upset by it.

I'm confused by what you think the unedited audio and transcript would clear up, since there doesn't appear to be an actual allegation in the first place.

It's not 'upsetting' me. It is confusing me.

Why is that so problematic?

As I have noted before, odds are against the Miller allegations, given past performance, so to speak.

An entire audio/transcript would provide context.

Yeah ironically enough huh. Breitbart really should have no crediblity yet I see Palin eating his latest crap up and calling these reporters bastards. So funny since she called the Dr. Laura incident the left's Shirley Sherrod yet here we see her buying shit peddled by the man who made Sherrodgate up.

You're never gonna get it. Breitbart never released the ACORN tapes either. The only reason they got out because some DA in California released them as part of a criminal investigation. Breitbart knows what he's doing and if he was interested in honesty he would have published the complete tapes already.

re: #81 researchok

But-- this is the point I'm trying to make-- the transcript as they released it, as Brietbart released it, shows absolutely nothing. That is their proof-- and as it stands, it doesn't even need any counterproof, because it doesn't show anything.

It's as if they recorded some reporters saying, "Let's dig deep into the Miller campaign and see if he has any other unsavory assholes working for him," and said, "See! They're biased against him!", or if they released a transcript of reporters saying, "If someone punches someone at a MIller rally, let's put out a tweet on that" as "OMG, bias!"

The allegations themselves make no sense, so I don't see what actually needs proving or disproving. That's what the disconnect here is.

And that is exactly what I have been saying all along.

Charges were leveled- serious charges. It is up to Miller, et al, to back up those charges. Only a full audio and transcript can do that.

If they don't, they need to be gone after with both barrels blazing, as I said earlier. If the charges are fraudulent, they need to be excoriated.

It seems to me that anyone who has it in for Breitbart would want the same thing.

Except that they're claiming what they've released already backs up those charges. That's my point. They've already shown what they're saying is proof-- and it's not. So, to me, they should be being excoriated right now.

Latest poll, from Dittman Research:

2010 U.S. Senate
37% Murkowski (write-in)
27% Miller
23% McAdams
13% Other / Unsure

Sounds like desperation on the part of the Miller campaign. This is also after Dan Riehl promoted by way of Big Government the flooding of write in candidates last week.

I think Big Government is reaching the point where it calls for scrutiny from the FEC. They are no longer a mere blog and have become deeply entwined within the election process. At the very least they are a major astroturfing organization.

The lukewarm response by KTVA and remarks about 'lessons learned', are noteworthy- and appropriate. Clearly they are acknowledging a problem and clearly they are attempting to deal with that problem.

I'm assuming that the "lesson learned" is to make sure your damn phone is turned off before you begin a bullshitting session about the latest moron running for office.
